Welcome to our Early Childhood Programs If you are looking for fun, engaging activities for your family this winter and spring, take a peek inside and discover several new offerings that will delight you and your family, along with a number of events brought back by popular demand. Music, movement, and dance are themes for many of our new classes. We are excited to bring you the renowned MacPhail Center for Music. They will be offering two events — a musical event for your whole family on February 27 (p. 9) and a four-week series, Musical Babies, in the spring (p. 7). Discover new lullabies, songs, and chants along with wiggling and bouncing games that will engage and delight your baby. And, movement and music don’t stop with your infants! Try our new engaging Dance Together series (p. 7) or our Kids Zumba class (p. 7). The weather may be cold and blustery outside, but you are guaranteed an energizing experience with these activities. Early Childhood Family Education

About ECFE classes Our trusted Early Childhood Family Education (ECFE) program offers affordable, high quality classes that support you and your young children. A typical class meets once a week and includes: Parent-Child Activity. Time for you and your child to enjoy a classroom filled with developmentally appropriate play and learning activities. You’ll take home new ideas for things you can do together. Parent Discussion. You’ll meet with other parents and a licensed parent educator to share support, experiences, and information about child development and parenting techniques. Children’s Activity Time. While you are in Parent Discussion (in separating classes), children learn and play with licensed early childhood teachers. Children practice social skills and will enjoy music, art, stories, and physical activities. And there’s more — join us for Special Topics workshops and fun family events (pages 8-9), and many other exciting activities (page 19 and back cover)! Continuing Education Units (CEUs) are also available for participants. Our Mission. The mission of Early Childhood Family Education is to strengthen families and support the ability of all parents in providing the best possible environment for healthy growth and development of their children. Our Staff. Our experienced ECFE teaching staff is dedicated to parents and children. Teachers hold a degree and state license in Parent Education, Early Childhood Education, or both. We look forward to being a trusted resource for learning, connections, and support for your family. We have classes for you and your child from birth to five years old. Early Childhood Family Education

How do I chose the right ECFE class? With so many options, there is something to fit your needs. Aside from our family events and Special Topics classes, all of our affordable ECFE classes meet once a week for 6 to 14 weeks. There are day and evening options, and most classes have sibling care. Our classes fall into three categories: non-separating, gradual separating, or separating. Read the descriptions below and then check out our classes on pages 4-9. To determine class fee, see the fee scale on page 11. If you still aren’t sure, please call parent educator, Kathryn Moore at 952-988-5046. About non-separating classes: You and your child stay together in the classroom for the entire duration of the class, engaging with them in enriching learning and play activities. A licensed parent educator will lead parent conversations on important topics such as child growth and development, transitioning to parenthood, and how children learn and play. Your child has a chance to play during this supportive group discussion. About gradual separating classes: In the beginning of gradual separating classes, you and your child meet in the same room. Parents will move to a separate room gradually as the class progresses. Separate parent meetings begin with short meeting times, and are gradually lengthened. About separating classes: You and your child explore activities together for about 30 minutes. This provides an opportunity to learn new ideas, games, songs, and activities that can be used at home. Then, parents meet in a separate classroom with a licensed parent educator for conversations related to child development and parenting. Parents share ideas, information, and experiences with one another, gaining knowledge, new connections, and support. Meanwhile, your child will participate in age-appropriate activities with a licensed early childhood teacher and a teaching assistant. Children are provided enriching early learning experiences which encourage social, emotional, physical and cognitive development. Sibling Care is available, if needed, on a sliding-scale basis for children for most classes. Siblings from three months through kindergarten who are not involved in class are eligible. Starting at 3 months of age, siblings may go to sibling care. Babies who are not yet mobile are welcome to come to class with parents. Sibling care cost is half of the class fee. Sign up for it on your registration form, page 12. Immunization Law. All students in the state of Minnesota must have immunizations up-to-date and schools must have a child’s immunization record when the child starts school.

Dates to note: Winter/Spring daytime and evening classes begin the week of January 18, 2016, and end on April 29, 2016 unless otherwise noted. ECFE doesn’t stop in the summer! Early Childhood Family Education offers convenient infant and toddler classes this summer, you don’t have to wait until fall to enjoy the benefits of taking a class with your child. While parents and children (birth through 12 months of age, or 13 through 20 months of age) connect and play, a parent educator leads discussions on topics such as growth and development, sleeping habits, nutrition, brain development, and how children learn and play. Spotlight!

Megan Soderholm, Early Childhood Programs Receptionist Megan has held a variety of customer-service related positions while working toward her degree before starting at Harley Hopkins Family Center in March, 2015. Her interest in working with children led to a B.S. in child psychology from the University of Minnesota in 2012. Megan is now enrolled through the University of North Dakota’s distance-learning program, working toward a Master’s degree in school counseling. Advocating for healthy emotional, social, and academic well-being for students, while working with parents to ensure their child receives the most out of their education is her goal. Megan and her fiancé love to attend concerts and travel out of state to see their favorite country singers. When she is not wedding planning or doing homework, Megan loves to cook, enjoys the outdoors, goes to her cabin, and spends as much time as possible with family and friends.

Saturday Family Open Gym

We have the cure for the winter wiggles! Saturday Family Open Gym gives parents and children a place to move, play, and have dynamic adventures together. Experience a variety of fun and energetic activities to help develop fine and gross motor skills, plus encourage social skills. The entire class is devoted to parent-child activities in the gym and classroom, with time at the end for music and songs. You can attend any or all of the Family Open Gym sessions. One Night Special Topics Free monthly series: Try us! Baby & Me Yoga Anna Melzer, certified yoga instructor, advanced prenatal training, Blooma Join this nurturing class that is specially designed to provide a supportive environment which promotes bonding with and getting to know your growing baby. Baby is included in the yoga practice to build a strong bond of security. It’s great for moms who are feeling fine at 6 weeks postpartum. Dads or other caregivers are welcome. Immunization Information Needed, No Shots, No School: Please note that updated immunization information for your child is required before attending class. In order to attend ECFE classes, parents must show that they’re in compliance with Minnesota School Immunization Law requirements. The Hopkins School District has adopted a “No Shots, No School Policy,” which states that students who are not up to date on their immunizations will not be allowed to start school until updated immunizations are provided. There are two ways you can submit your child’s immunization record: 1) Ask your child’s physician for a copy of the current immunization record: Fax it to 952-988-5349, attn: ECFE 2) Drop it off at Harley Hopkins Family Center, 125 Monroe Ave S, Hopkins Parents/guardians may choose to decline immunizations for their children by filing a legal exemption with the school. Stepping Stones Preschool is a year-before-kindergarten experience that provides full-day programming, with either a school-year or year-round option. Our program hours are 6:45 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., Monday-Friday. Children must be four years old by September 1. The 2015-16 program runs from September 1, 2015 to June 3 (school-year) or August 24, 2016 (full year).

What will my child learn? Our preschools are designed to provide a foundation for lifelong learning. Our curriculum is inspired by the signature Reggio Emilia Approach, meaning we foster academic and critical thinking skills – as well as social, physical, and emotional growth – in a guided discovery-based setting that helps prepare children for kindergarten. Learning is individualized. Betsey Matas, M.A., licensed parent educator Betsey Matas is a longtime ECFE parent who, after the birth of her 5 baby, decided to head back to school at the University of Minnesota to obtain her parent education license and a M.Ed. in family education. She believes in helping parents understand, embrace, and laugh at all that the crazy world of parenting has to offer. She lives in Bloomington with her one daughter, four sons, two big dogs, and husband. Playground Nights

Help your child become excited for the start of school! Use this opportunity to visit your child’s school and explore the playground right before the school year begins. Your family will meet other kindergartners and their parents, along with school staff. Playground Nights take place in August, before school begins. Exact dates will be determined later this year. Check your elementary school’s online calendar (visit HopkinsSchools.org) for the date and time for your 2016 Playground Night.

A licensed parent educator can work with you by phone, e-mail, a home visit, or by appointment at Harley.

Visits can include: • Current information on parenting and child development. • Activities for young children. • Information about local resources. • A Welcome Packet and much more. This helpful service is free to parents with infants, toddlers and preschoolers, ages birth-5, living in the Hopkins School District.
