From the Coordinator The latest brain research indicates that learning is enhanced

when a person feels physically safe and emotionally secure. This is true for all learners, but holds particular importance for our youngest learners – infants, toddlers, and preschoolers. They thrive when they are developing in safe environments, with proper nutrition, physical affection, and supportive caretaking. We in Hopkins Early Childhood Programs understand the importance of strong beginnings, and are excited to provide no-cost opportunities to support you in providing safe and secure environments for your young learner. In our Baby and Mama Yoga classes, discover gentle, calming movements to do with your infant that support her in feeling supported and nurtured. In our Infant Massage class, explore ways to help your little one get deeper, longer nights of sleep, relieve his fussiness, and reduce discomfort so that he can focus on his learning all about his new environment. You will find new strategies to support the nutritional needs of your infant or toddler in our Picky Eaters No More! class. In addition to supporting your child’s needs, you will discover proven ways to nurture your relationship with your partner in our Baby-Proofing Your Relationship workshop, which will enhance the loving environment you create for your new family. Find each of these classes on page 8. As your child’s world expands to include learning environments beyond your home, consider our exceptional preschool programs. Hopkins Preschools – Kaleidoscope and Stepping Stones (pages 12-14) – are unparalleled in offering learning environments that are in alignment with cutting-edge best practices for young students. Learning opportunities in our preschool classrooms invite children to participate in activities that are meaningful, relevant, and challenging – and inspire them to create, hypothesize, and experiment – skills that create a strong foundation for lifelong learning. Find out more about our flexible options, convenient locations, and internationally-recognized curriculum by joining us at one of our Preschool Visit Us Days (page 12), in February. We know you will be inspired by our educational, interactive, and stimulating experiences for both you and your child. Join us!

Meet ECFE Teaching Assistant:

Meet Kaleidoscope Preschool Teacher:

Originally from Milwaukee, Cindy moved to Minneapolis in 1984, met her husband, Steve, and has been here since. She started attending ECFE classes with her children in 1992 at Harley Hopkins Family Center. Several years later, Cindy began working in the program. She has worked in the classrooms and in the sibling care rooms at both the Meadowbrook and Harley sites.

Dedicated to working with children, Sandy has been a teacher for over 25 years. She has a Bachelor’s degree in education and psychology, and is currently finishing her Masters in Education at Hamline University. For the last two years, Sandy has been a preschool teacher at Kaleidoscope Preschool. She enjoys the energy and positive outlook of children this age. Sandy loves playing a role in creating an excitement for learning in young children. Sandy resides in Eden Prairie with her husband and four children, Casey (24), Shaylee (20), Chase (18) and Nicholas (13). She enjoys spending time with her children whether it be skiing, roller blading, boating, tennis, racquetball, or shopping.

Cindy Luisi

Cindy graduated from college with a degree in art. She loves using her creative expertise to plan art projects and experiences for the children, and create environments that nurture their artistic curiosities. Cindy has two grown children, both of whom attended Hopkins Public Schools. In addition to spending time with her family, Cindy loves photography, musicals, nature, and, of course, all types of art exhibits.

Meet Stepping Stones Classroom Assistant: Joey Wagenheim

After receiving an Early Childhood Director’s License from Colorado Mountain College, Joey taught preschool in Salida, Colorado and in Santa Fe, New Mexico. A compelling job offer lured Joey and her husband to Minnesota; in short order, they fell in love with the Midwest. Joey began working for Hopkins Public Schools 12 years ago, and is in her third year as a classroom assistant teacher at Meadowbrook Stepping Stones. Previously, Joey was a learning support paraprofessional in reading and math for elementary students, then spent three years with the Kids & Company childcare program. Joey is delighted to be a part of the Stepping Stones team, proclaiming, “I absolutely love seeing the world through the eyes of a 4-5 year old!”

Early Childhood Family Education

You are your child’s first and most impor tant teacher

What are ECFE classes? Our ECFE Classes (ECFE is Early Childhood Family Education)

You are your child’s first and most important teacher. Our affordable ECFE classes can help you with that role. Our high quality classes are for you and your young children — birth to pre-kindergarten age. A typical class meets once a week and includes: • Parent-Child Activity. Time where you and your child together enjoy a classroom filled with developmentally appropriate play and learning activities. You’ll take home new ideas for things you can do together. • Parent Discussion. You’ll meet with other parents and a licensed parent educator to share support, experiences, and information about child development and parenting techniques. • Children’s Activity Time. While you are in Parent Discussion (in separating classes), children learn and play with licensed early childhood teachers. Children practice social skills and will enjoy music, art, stories, and large/small muscle activities.

More Activities & Workshops

And there’s more — join us for Special Topics workshops and fun family events (page 8), and many other exciting activities (page 16, 17, and back cover)! Continuing Education Units (CEUs) are also available for participants.

Didn’t start when your child was a baby?

No problem! We have classes for you and your child all the way from birth to five years old. You are welcome to join classes at any point it fits with your family’s life.

How to choose an ECFE class: Choosing an ECFE class to attend is easy. Aside from our events and Special Topics classes, all of our affordable ECFE classes meet once a week for 6 to 14 weeks. There are day and evening options for all age groups, and most classes have sibling care. Our classes fall into three categories: non-separating, gradual separating, or separating. Read the descriptions below and then check out our classes on pages 4-7.

Non-Separating Classes What you need to know about non-separating classes: • Parents and children stay together in the classroom for the entire duration of the class. • Parents remain in the same room with children and interact with them in varied learning and play activities. • A licensed parent educator leads discussion on topics such as child growth and development, transition to parenthood, and how children learn and play. • Discussion, sharing, and support take place within sight and sound of playing children.

Gradual Separating Classes What you need to know about gradual separating classes: • Parents and children follow the same format as listed in separating classes, except that parents start out meeting in the same room with the children and then move to a separate room several weeks into the semester. • Separate meetings begin with only short periods of time away from the children. • Gradually, the periods are lengthened as children adjust to the separation.

Registration for Winter/Spring 2014 ECFE lottery classes must be received by Monday, December 16 at noon. See page 9 for lottery information. Questions about our programs? Call Kathryn at 952-988-5046.

Separating Classes What you need to know about separating classes: • Parents and children interact and explore activities together for about 30 minutes of class time. This provides an opportunity to share, learn new ideas, games, songs and activities that can be used at home. • Following interaction time, parents meet in a separate classroom with a licensed parent educator for discussion of topics related to child development and parenting. They share ideas, information and experiences with one another, gaining knowledge and encouragement. • While parents meet with a licensed parent educator, children participate in age-appropriate activities with a licensed early childhood teacher and a teaching assistant. Children are provided experiences which encourage social, emotional, physical and cognitive development.

Sibling Care Sibling Care (if needed) is available on a sliding-scale basis for children from birth through kindergarten who are not involved in class. Starting at 6 months of age, siblings need to go to sibling care. Newborns and young babies are welcome to come to class with parents. Sibling care cost is half of the class fee. Sign up for it on your registration form, page 11.

Things you need to know

IMMUNIZATION HISTORY: Fill in the MO/DAY/YR information for children 2 months of age and older. Vaccines/doses in shaded boxes are not required by law. If child received a combined shot (like Hib-hep B), write the date in all the boxes that apply.

Immunization Program P.O. Box 64975 St. Paul, MN 55164-0975 651-201-5503 or 1-800-657-3970 www.health.state.mn.us/immunize IC#140-0474 (MDH, 6/2008)

Questions? If you have a question about immunizations, call your clinic or local public health department.

Note for Providers 1. Remind parents to immunize children on time. • As an ECFE/School Readiness provider, you are in an excellent position to help remind parents about immunizations. • Ask your local health department for an updated immunization schedule each calendar year so you will have the latest information on hand.

4. If your child is not up-to-date on his or her shots, you can catch up. Minnesota children are still getting diseases like measles, mumps, and rubella. These diseases are contagious. They can spread rapidly, especially among groups of children who have not received their shots. And some of them, like pertussis (whooping cough), are much more serious for children than they are for adults. As a parent, you can protect your children by making sure they get all their shots.

Notes for Parents 1. Give your child’s immunization history to the ECFE/School Readiness coordinator when you enroll. 2. Keep track of your child’s shots. 3. This program will be only one of many times you will need an upto-date shot record for your child. • It will save you time if you keep a shot record for each of your children. • Be sure to have the record updated each time your child receives a shot. • You will also need this record for school, camp, college, and if you go to a new doctor or clinic.

ECFE/School Readiness Immunization Record-Instructions Who should complete this form? Either the parent/guardian or physician/clinic, can fill in the child’s immunization history. You can get a legal exemption to the immunization law for medical or conscientious reasons.

STEM • Science Technology, Engineering, Math

STEM in all Hopkins Preschools

Harley Hopkins: Fri., Feb. 28 12:00-1:00 p.m.

Children are natural explorers, sense-makers, and problem-solvers. What they explore depends on the materials, experiences, and support we provide them. All Hopkins preschool programs have STEM curriculum. STEM learning integrates into the Hopkins Preschool program because it is already centered on exploratory learning, a cornerstone of the Reggio-inspired approach.

Glen Lake: Tues., Feb. 25 12:00-1:00 p.m.

The STEM for Preschool project provides our preschool classrooms with the tools and knowledge necessary to assist children in an elevated beginning exploration and understanding of STEM concepts. This gives preschoolers the STEM base knowledge, ready to be expanded on, as they move into deeper STEM concepts through the Hopkins Public Schools curriculum. We thank the Hopkins Education Foundation for the grant to bring STEM materials and experiences to Hopkins’ youngest learners.

Elementary Programs

Junior & Senior High

Here are just a few of the things that make Hopkins K-6th grade special! • NEW! Spanish Language instruction for all kindergarten through second-grade students in Fall 2014. • Our STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) and EiE (Engineering is Elementary) curriculum promotes science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) for all students. Hopkins is one of only three schools districts in Minnesota that offers EiE curriculum. • Gifted and Talented Services begin in kindergarten, and ensure that enrichment opportunities are provided in core subjects. • Every Hopkins elementary school has a full-time counselor who partners with teachers, and works with individual students/families. • Every Hopkins elementary school offers orchestra and band. • Our teachers tap into the unique needs of each student to inspire a life-long enthusiasm for learning. • Digital content and devices in our classrooms continue to expand our ability to customize learning for your child.

Hopkins offers one of the most enriched academic programs in the state. In addition to a rigorous core curriculum of English, math, science, social studies, and reading, students’ academic day includes an extensive experiential program including: • World Languages & immersion programs • Visual Arts • Physical Education • Music • Family and Consumer Sciences • Technical Education • College in the Classrooms (CiS) • Extensive AP offerings

¡HOLA!

In addition to our AP, College in the Schools, and Honors courses, Hopkins offers extensive options: more than 250 high school courses and 60 junior high electives. Our junior highs are International Baccalaureate (IB) candidate schools, giving our students a unique global focus. Prepared for College — Prepared for Life Our secondary program gives students an extraordinary range of opportunities so they begin to know themselves, and are more focused and prepared when they enter post-secondary education or the workforce, because of their many experiences at Hopkins Public Schools.

World Language in all elementary schools

All kindergarten and first grade classrooms have Spanish language instruction integrated into the regular curriculum. Spanish language instruction will expand yearly until all elementary grades have the integrated curriculum. The addition of our new Spanish language instruction program to the elementary curriculum aligns with the competitive World Language opportunities offered at our junior and senior high schools. Adding a world language to the elementary curriculum is an excellent learning opportunity for our students. Research has shown that learning other languages has a positive effect on intellectual growth, improves understanding of a child’s native language, provides exposure to other cultures, and gives students a head start in the language requirements needed for college.
