Hopkins Community Education: Early Childhood Programs

ECFE Overview

Welcome to our Early Childhood Programs

Early Childhood Family Education

Listening to you is a top priority for us. We asked what would help your family grow and thrive in these early years, and you responded. As a result, we have expanded our offerings for you this fall. Saturday programs for both you and your child is one of those new ideas. Starting in September, we will be offering Saturday classes. For preschool-aged children, we will be offering Saturday Preschool (p. 15 ). We will also be offering Saturday ECFE classes for parents, with childcare being provided for your convenience (p. 9). One series of classes will include strategies and recommendations for dealing with those challenging meltdowns, tantrums, and arguments your child sometimes has. Another series of classes will present approaches to parenting young children that will enhance your child’s growing ability to be cooperative and confident. We invite you to take a look inside this brochure and discover all the amazing activities, events, and classes available to you and your family. Please join us! ECFE Overview

Early Childhood Family Education

About ECFE classes Our trusted Early Childhood Family Education (ECFE) program offers affordable, high quality classes that support you and your young children. A typical class meets once a week and includes: Parent-Child Activity. Time for you and your child to enjoy a classroom filled with developmentally appropriate play and learning activities. You’ll take home new ideas for things you can do together. Parent Discussion. You’ll meet with other parents and a licensed parent educator to share support, experiences, and information about child development and parenting techniques. Children’s Activity Time. While you are in Parent Discussion (in separating classes), children learn and play with licensed early childhood teachers. Children practice social skills and will enjoy music, art, stories, and physical activities. And there’s more — join us for Special Topics workshops and fun family events (pages 8-9), and many other exciting activities (page 19 and back cover)! Continuing Education Units (CEUs) are also available for participants. Our Mission. The mission of Early Childhood Family Education is to strengthen families and support the ability of all parents in providing the best possible environment for healthy growth and development of their children. Our Staff. Our experienced ECFE teaching staff is dedicated to parents and children. Teachers hold a degree and state license in Parent Education, Early Childhood Education, or both. We look forward to being a trusted resource for learning, connections, and support for your family. We have classes for you and your child from birth to five years old. Sign up for classes at any time! *Note: the word “parent” in this publication refers to adult caregivers responsible for the child.

Questions about our classes or programs?

How do I choose the right ECFE class? With so many options, there is something to fit your needs. Aside from our family events and Special Topics classes, all of our affordable ECFE classes meet once a week for 6 to 14 weeks. There are day and evening options, and most classes have sibling care. Our classes fall into three categories: non-separating, gradual separating, or separating. Read the descriptions below and then check out our classes on pages 4-9. To determine class fee, see the fee scale on page 11. If you still aren’t sure, please call parent educator, Kathryn Moore at 952-988-5046. At Hopkins, families are always welcome! Registration remains open for classes that have already started (if space is available). Please contact us for a prorated fee if you’d like to join an ongoing class that has already begun. About non-separating classes: You and your child stay together in the classroom for the entire duration of the class, engaging with them in enriching learning and play activities. A licensed parent educator will lead parent conversations on important topics such as child growth and development, transitioning to parenthood, and how children learn and play. Your child has a chance to play during this supportive group discussion. About gradual-separating classes: In the beginning of gradual separating classes, you and your child meet in the same room. Parents will move to a separate room gradually as the class progresses. Separate parent meetings begin with short meeting times and are gradually lengthened. About separating classes: You and your child explore activities together for about 30 minutes. This provides an opportunity to learn new ideas, games, songs, and activities that can be used at home. Then, parents meet in a separate classroom with a licensed parent educator for conversations related to child development and parenting. Parents share ideas, information, and experiences with one another, gaining knowledge, new connections, and support. Meanwhile, your child will participate in age-appropriate activities with a licensed early childhood teacher and a teaching assistant. Children are provided enriching, early learning experiences which encourage social, emotional, physical, and cognitive development. Sibling Care is available, if needed, on a sliding-scale basis for children for most classes. Siblings from three months through kindergarten who are not involved in class are eligible. Babies who are not yet mobile are welcome to come to class with parents. Sibling care cost is half of the class fee. Sign up for it on your registration form, page 12. Immunization Law. All students in the state of Minnesota must have immunizations up-to-date and schools must have a child’s immunization record when the child starts school.

Catie Nelson Wagner, Ready4K Preschool Teacher at Gatewood Elementary Catie Nelson Wagner is in her third year teaching at Gatewood Elementary in the Ready 4K classroom and her fifth year working with preschoolers. She has a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, Science, and English; and a Master’s Degree in Early Childhood Education with a license in Early Childhood Special Education. Catie loves working with children and feels fortunate to be able to share the day exploring with them where every day is filled with possibility and those “ah ha!” moments of learning. She finds it fascinating how simple objects can transform throughout a session, such as a cardboard box becoming a fire truck, a fort, or more.

When not at school, Catie enjoys spending time with herfamily kayaking, hiking, playing in the snow, or relaxing with a movie or a book together.

More From Early Childhood

Early Childhood Screening must do! An important milestone before entering kindergarten!

Early childhood screening offers a snapshot of your child’s health and development. Screening is a brief, simple procedure used to identify potential health or developmental issues in young children. Screening supports children’s readiness for kindergarten and promotes positive child health and developmental outcomes. Every child entering kindergarten in Minnesota is required to go through early childhood screening. If your child is between the ages of 3 and 5 years, you are invited to make an appointment for an early childhood screening. Make your child’s screening appointment now: Register online at www.HopkinsSchools.org/screen, or leave a phone message at 952-988-5017.
