From the Coordinator Inspiration – where does it come from? What drives us to learn a new skill, meet new people, hone a craft, or explore new concepts and ideas? What gives us motivation and inspiration for the life journey we face? I recently returned from a trip to New York City, and I find nothing more inspiring than being in that cosmopolitan mix of people, culture, the arts, and the high-end energy at every turn. The pace inspires me. The arts inspire me. The mix of language and culture inspires me. I was fortunate to take in a few shows, visit art museums, enjoy a couple of dance classes, and spend enough time to be inspired for the journey ahead. How do you recharge and stay motivated for the days and months ahead? Research suggests that we should surround ourselves with things that energize us and make them part of everyday life. Likewise, practice gratitude; learn a new skill or teach a skill to others; gather together with other artists, learners, and thinkers; exercise and clear your mind; try something new and different; or take a class on a new topic or subject area. Being regularly inspired keeps us alive, filled with energy, and ready for whatever tasks and challenges we face. Inspiration ebbs and flows but it’s part of a vibrant life. Allowing yourself time to seek inspiration is necessary. Here in Hopkins Community Education, we have unending opportunity — all ready to inspire you, ignite your creativity, enhance your global viewpoint, and kindle a passion for life-long learning. Ready to learn something new? Check out this catalog filled with new learning opportunities. Ready to teach a class? We’re here for you and welcome your expertise. Ready to be inspired by your amazing community members? You’ll find them here — in every class we offer. We’re ready for you as we step into 2020. Join us and find renewed inspiration for living your best life today.

See you in class!

World-Class Community, continued from back cover page simultaneously heart-breaking and heart-warming film follows the determination of a charismatic north Minneapolis principal as she sets out to undo history and change the trajectory of success in her school. Not only does Minnesota have the largest achievement gap between black and white children in the United States, Lucy Laney Elementary School continuously found itself at the bottom of the state's list of underperforming schools. Watch as principal, parents, children, and staff lead this school to increased success and improved standardized test scores — a first for this school. When the school encounters a heartbreaking setback, the true measure of student success at Lucy Laney is confronted. Join us for this inspiring story of perseverance and the power of love. In March: Childhood adversity and resilience March brings us the film Broken Places. Why are some children seemingly damaged by early adversity while others are able to thrive despite their circumstance? To help answer this question, filmmaker Roger Weisberg revisited a few of the stories of the neglected and troubled children he filmed years ago. Experience a unique time-lapse perspective on how the trauma that these children experienced shaped their lives as adults. Broken Places weaves these longitudinal narratives with commentary from nationally renowned experts in neurobiology and early childhood development in order to shine a light on the devastating impact of childhood adversity as well as the factors that can foster resilience.

In April: Racial disparities in Minnesota In April, we look forward to the Hopkins Race and Equity Initiative’s presentation of Jim Crow of the North. Why does Minnesota suffer, endure, and even perpetuate some of the worst racial disparities in the nation? One answer is the spread of racist, restrictive real estate covenants in the early 20th century. Jim Crow of the North examines racist policies and practices from the onset of restrictive covenants after the turn of the last century to their final elimination in the late 1960s. Participate in a panel discussion following this engaging film. In May: Anxiety's effect on our youth Finally, in May, the film Angst will be featured. Angst is a documentary designed to raise awareness of anxiety and its effects. Anxiety is pervasive. According to national statistics, anxiety affects over 18% of adults and 25% of our school aged youth. This thought-provoking film includes interviews with kids, teens, educators, experts, parents, and other featured guests. Learn to identify and understand the symptoms of anxiety and the steps needed to get help or provide help to others. We look forward to seeing you at one or more of these film screenings. Register in advance, or simply walk in and attend each evening as you wish. All film series events are free of charge. Come and learn, listen, discuss, and explore as you meet your neighbors and build a more resilient, informed, and caring community.
