Parenting Tips from Hopkins Parent Education Specialist, Sara Chovan

Helping your child transition to junior high 1. Continue to set a time and space for homework that is free from distractions. Junior high students still need support for their independent work. 2. Encourage attendance at clubs and groups outside of school to widen his circle of friends. 3. Help her make responsible decisions by experiencing the consequences of her poor choices. Don’t rescue her from the natural consequences of her actions. Adapted from: Schoolcounselor.org and Parenttoolkit.com

Did you know?

Out of School Time (OST) — enrichment activities, clubs, events, and programs occurring before school, after school, on non-school days, and in the summer — has distinct benefits for young people. A growing body of research points out that regular participation in high-quality learning, recreation, and enrichment activities during out of school time hours can contribute to: • Increased love of learning • Heightened student engagement • Improved academic achievement • Increased social skills

• Improved overall health and wellness • Enhanced self esteem • Improved school attendance • Expanded pride in school and community

We are pleased to be able to provide quality, year-round, intentional OST opportunities to all of our Hopkins youth. Here, you will find an integrated approach to out-of-school time that complements the school day, and provides all of our young people with the best chance for success in school — and in life!
