Throughout the history of Apple and its products, one term not synonymous with the Apple brand is that of business and corporate use. Apple tends to be quite popular in design, desktop publishing, video editing and overall creative usage. It's just not a device that people associate with e-mail, spreadsheets and presentations. Their most recent product, the iPad, is not immune from this treatment. In fact, part of its perceived failure is as a device for business corporate use. How does one take full advantage of the iPad in a business environment? After all, most people dub the iPad as just an over sized iPhone. How can it help me, a business person? To answer this question, first examine any tools you use on a daily basis at work that hasn't really changed much since you were a kid. Certainly, one such device still in use today is your common variety pen and paper. You go to each meeting making sure you have something to write with and something to write on. The problem with this method of note keeping is that over time, you end up with a stack of paper that you can never reference.Imagine having a stylus for your iPad and taking your notes electronically. Once you're done with your meeting, you can synch the iPad to your computer and store your notes digitally. You can choose to back this up externally as well. Better still, you can do a search function on your computer looking specifically from your notes. Try to do that with the old fashioned method? Another cost most companies try to keep down is long distance call usage. While a necessary evil in doing business, it is still a heavy cost. How can the iPad help? By using applications such as Skype, you can set up a free account and make free Skype-to-Skpe calls. If you have a team based overseas, why not take advantage of free WiFi calls using Skype? I imagine future versions of the iPad having the capability to use video. Skype let's you do video conferencing for free. Are you on a global team? Do your team members from across the pond often want to share their desktops with you? Why lug around your computer to conference rooms just to see what remote team members are sharing on their end? Instead, use your iPad by downloading the free WebEx application. Just open up your e-mail WebEx invitation and the application will automatically log you in to the presentation. WebEx for iPad works both in Wifi and 3G modes and both work so seamlessly. No more taking your laptop out of the docking station just to go to meetings. Instead, bring your laptop and enjoy! Finally, there's been some talk about how the iPad doesn't handle its connection with Microsoft Outlook very well. Not sure what people were expecting, but I find the synch process between Microsoft Outlook and my iPad quite seamless and easy to work with. In fact, I get the e-mail faster on my iPad than I do on my actual computer. Calendar and meetings work so well that I'm actually excited to be using a Microsoft product. The iPad calendar shows both Google and Outlook meetings along with all the details. Creating a new meeting from the iPad automatically synchs with Outlook and the exchange server.
There are more uses than this article could have room for, but the myth of the iPad not being a viable business or corporate tool is completely false in nature. In fact, it could be quite helpful and could easily replace most tools we've been accustomed to using and too afraid to change. The iPad is here to stay and it's just a matter of time before we find it integrated with most things we do in our daily lives.
