1ST SEMESTER SINCE THIS WAS OUR FIRST EVER BUILDING PROJECT, NOTHING WAS TOO CRAZY. WE WERE CHALLANGED TO DESIGN A TOURIST CENTER WITH A GALLERY SPACE IN A PARKING LOT OF A DONUT SHOP ON CAMPUS CORNER , BUT THE BUILDING FOOTPRINT COULD ONLY TAKE UP 20% OF THE SITE AREA.
5
CAMPUS CORNER CASTLE I THOUGHT THAT AN APPROPRIATE BUILDING WOULD BE ONE THAT MIMICKED THE CHEROKEE GOTHIC STYLE ON CAMPUS. A HIDDEN COURTYARD WITH A BIG REVEAL WAS VERY IMPORTANT TO ME, SO I STRETCHED THE BUILDING THINLY TO ONLY ABOUT FIFTEEN FEET WIDE TO KEEP IT IN THE REQUIREMENTS AND STILL HAVE IT SURROUND THE SITE.
6
2ND SEMESTER THE PROJECT FOR THIS SEMESTER WAS A DIFFERENT SITE ON CAMPUS CORNER, BUT THIS TIME OUR TASK WAS TO DESIGN AN INTRIGUING TOPOGRAPHY RATHER THAN A BUILDING. WE WERE LIMITED TO DIGGING INTO THE GROUND NO MORE THAN ONE AND A HALF FEET AND BUILDING UP NO MORE THAN FOUR FEET.
7
MANIPULATING GROUND EARLIER THIS SEMESTER WE HAD WORKED WITH ARRAYS, SO I STARTED OUT WORKING WITH SQUARES WHICH TURNED INTO PENTAGONS WHICH THEN ABSTRACTED TO MORE NATURAL SHAPES. A BIG GOAL OF MINE FOR THIS PROJECT WAS TO NOT JUST SIT MY DESIGN ON THE SITE BUT FOR IT TO FEEL LIKE IT WAS NATURALLY IN THE SITE, SO I USED THE EXTREMES OF THE HIEGHT/ DEPTH LIMITS TO MY ADVANTAGE IN REMOVING THE SENSE OF GROUND PLANE.
8
3RD SEMESTER OUR THIRD SEMESTER PROJECT CHALLENGED US TO DESIGN FIVE SECTIONS AND THEN COMBINE THEM INTO A SINGLE BUILDING OR PART OF A BUILDING. THERE HAD TO BE THREE DIFFERENT LEVELS OF SPACE, AND SINCE WE HAD WORKED WITH STAIRS RIGHT BEFORE THIS PROJECT, WE ALSO HAD TO HAVE AT LEAST ONE STAIRCASE.
9
DESINGING IN SECTION I DESIGNED MY BUILDING AS IF IT WERE A PART OF A MUCH LOGER STRUCTURE. I WANTED TO CREAT LONG THIN SPACES AND A GRAND CENTRAL STAIR AS IF IT WERE A MUSEUM. I ALSO PLAYED WITH THE DEPTH OF EACH SECTION SO IT FELT MORE COHESIVE THAN JUST FIVE PARTS GLUED TOGETHER.
10
4TH SEMESTER WE WENT OUT OF STATE TO THE EXOTIC EUREKA SPRINGS, ARKANSAS FOR THIS PROJECT. OUR SITE WAS AN INFILL ON A SLOPE WHICH CHALLENGED US TO THINK ABOUT THREE DIFFERENT LEVELS OF ENTRY. OUR TASK WAS TO DESIGN A BOUTIQUE HOTEL WITH A RETAURANT AND GALLERY AND THE OVERALL CONCEPT HAD TO RELATE BACK TO A PHOTOGRAPHER WE WERE ASSIGNED AT THE START OF THE SEMESTER.
11
PROGRAM AND ENTRY MY PHOTOGRAPHER WAS PHILIPPE HALSMAN, WHO WAS FAMOUS FOR HIS JUMPING PORTRAITS. IN RESPONSE TO THIS, I WANTED TO REMOVE THE SENSE OF GROUND PLANE AT THE MAIN ENTRANCE AND IN THE GALLERY IN ORDER FOR THE OCCUPANTS TO FEEL HIGH UP IN THE AIR. A GOAL I HAD FOR THIS PROJECT AS WELL WAS TO DESIGN AN EFFICIENT PROGRAM AND SEQUENCE OF SPACE.
