Chair’s Report

FINANCIAL PERFORMANCE

Horizon Bank has continued to grow & perform profitably during 2021/22 as highlighted by the following key financial results:

Loan growth of 16% was well ahead of budget and significantly above our industry peers; Deposits grew by over $55m during the year enabling us to internally fund our extraordinary loan growth; and

The successful merger integration with Lysaght Credit Union, combined with our loan growth and prudent monitoring of expenses, contributed to produce an outstanding $3.6m in Profit before Tax, substantially ahead of last year’s $2.3m. Horizon’s key metrics remain well within our risk tolerance levels and most importantly Capital Adequacy and Liquidity continue to comfortably exceed APRA’s mandated minimum levels.

LYSAGHT CREDIT UNION MERGER

As highlighted above, Horizon’s merger with Lysaght Credit Union (LCU) has delivered increased capital and profitability, hence enabling further investment in services & digital technology to benefit our members.

I am pleased with the feedback from ex-LCU members which has been very positive and is reflected in the strong retention of these members. Our Board welcomed ex-LCU directors Nick Scavarelli and Viktor Tomeski in 2021 and their contribution in the first 12 months to Horizon has been outstanding.

HORIZON STRATEGY

In 2021 we reaffirmed our strategy of delivering a high quality branch network supported by a superior digital experience for members.

In 2022/23 there will once again be a significant financial investment in digital technology and in our branches. We are also very proud of our continued investment in management and staff; Horizon is delighted to have recently employed 5 young trainees, and have made critical appointments to bolster our finance and IT capabilities. These appointments highlight our commitment not just to our current members, but to ensuring Horizon remains relevant to a younger generation of future members, and will no doubt assist in maintaining and improving Horizon’s member service & satisfaction. Our commitment to members, management and staff is always at the forefront when making strategic decisions.

ENVIRONMENTAL, SOCIAL AND GOVERNANCE (ESG)

Whilst the acronym “ESG” has only recently come into vogue, Horizon’s Board and Management believe that these principles have been wholly consistent with the values and ethos demonstrated by the Credit Union industry for many decades. It is clear however that stakeholders (including shareholders, suppliers, employees and the community) have a clear expectation that companies will be transparent and forthcoming in reporting how they manage these responsibilities, and Horizon will continue to develop its ESG framework through 2022/23 – with a particular focus on ‘Environmental’ (our impact on the natural environment) and ‘Social’ (how we manage relationships and employees, members and our community).

I am pleased to once again present the Chair’s Report for Horizon Bank, and reflect upon yet another challenging, but ultimately extremely successful year for the organisation.
As always, Horizon seeks to maintain a balance between our responsibilities to members, our communities, the environment and our prudential requirements.

COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT

Horizon Bank is proud of its heritage in the Illawarra, South Coast and Far South Coast of NSW. Our members are our number one priority and we are pleased to announce in 2022/23 the establishment of Horizon’s Community Grants Program which will provide much needed funding to community organisations in our regions.

With many of our banking competitors reducing services and branches in regional communities, your Board is proudly enhancing both the branch experience with personalised service and enhanced digital services.

Horizon continues to invest in our ‘bricks & mortar’ branches to ensure these remain contemporary and to a standard expected by our members, and on the technology front new payment services and are being implemented to complement upgrades to our existing internet banking and mobile banking app solutions.

BOARD AND MANAGEMENT

Our Board renewal program is performing exceptionally well and over the next several years we expect to introduce one new Board Associate each year and farewell a long serving Director. It is extremely important for Board Governance that our Renewal Plan clearly articulates Board skill sets and diversification so as to ensure new Directors, via the Associate Director program, have the appropriate qualifications and experience to further enhance governance at Horizon. The Management Succession Plan is fit for purpose and our executive staff are well versed in their responsibilities.

I’d like to take this opportunity to thank my fellow directors for their continued hard work, loyalty and integrity, CEO Jon Stanfield & his management team for their vision & leadership, and all our fantastic staff who go above & beyond for our members.

And finally of course my deepest gratitude & appreciation to all Horizon members, without whose support we simply wouldn’t exist.

Staff Spotlight

It was a really tough year for our Team at Bega. They continued to help our members in their usual friendly manner while grieving for a dear colleague and their leader.

It was wonderful for the Bega community to recognise their impeccable service by nominating the branch in the Bega Chamber of Commerce Customer Service & Business Awards. The Bega team was a finalist in that category.

Veteran Kerry Wheatley was also nominated for Bega Most Outstanding Customer Service Senior Female. Kerry took out this award which is a testament to her commitment to helping our members. We’re very proud of how the Bega team rallied during the hard times and celebrated the good.

Trainees

We had a record number of trainees start with us this year. Four trainees are being trained as Member Service Officers at Bega, Moruya, Nowra & Albion Park. Another trainee, rounding up our number to five, is working in our Administration department in Wollongong. We’re pleased to be giving these young people a fresh start in the finance industry. They’re all undertaking extra studies to supplement their on-the-job training. Angela, Ella, Hope & Juliet are studying for their Certificate 4 in Financial Services. Clare is studying for her Certificate 3 in Business.

“I’ve enjoyed easing into my role, training in Admin, Finance and Loans at head office. There’s definitely a lot of variety when being trained in 3 different departments, which I like as there’s always more and more to learn. I’ve found I’ve already gained so much knowledge about how Horizon operates as a business and I’m excited for what’s to come.”

Clare

Staff Day

There’s one day in the year when all our staff gather together. It’s quite an event considering our branch network spans the South Coast from Thirroul in the north to 6 hours’ drive away south to Merimbula. It’s been a couple of years since we’ve been able to unite, which made the day extraordinarily special. It’s a time to catch up with old friends, welcome new ones and put faces to names. It’s also a day to recognise the previous financial year’s outstanding performances such as:

BRANCH OF THE YEAR - THIRROUL

The Thirroul team had worked tirelessly to provide their members with exemplary service which was reflected in their results. They’re always going the extra mile for their community. Their willingness to participate in local events was commendable. The Thirroul branch is, as a result, highly regarded in Illawarra’s northern suburbs. We’re extremely proud of their achievements and that’s why the Thirroul team of Julie, Sharon & Mira were awarded Branch of the Year!

YOUNG ACHIEVER - ELLA GRANT, MORUYA

Ella has been a star performer since commencing her traineeship with us. In her studies, Ella completed her Certificate 3 Financial Services in record time, so fast in fact, that the training college requested she slow down! Ella has been nominated as a student of the month and has almost completed her Certificate 4. In the branch, Ella has impressed with her ability to learn tasks at such a quick rate and with her maturity in dealing with members of all ages. Ella has regularly offered to take on further tasks which has included assisting head office on several occasions. We see a big future for Ella and we’re thrilled that she was recognised with the Young Achiever award.

EMPLOYEE OF THE YEAR - JULIE KJESTRUP, ASSISTANT OPERATIONS MANAGER

Julie’s work ethic, willingness to step in and assist with any task regardless of whether it fits within her job description and commitment to the well-being of all staff made her a worthy recipient of this award. Her dedication was even more apparent during Covid and during several natural disasters (floods). Throughout these challenges, it was difficult to ensure all branches had the resources to remain open. Julie provided solutions on most occasions and often volunteered to cover the role herself. For that and her work in on boarding Lysaght Credit Union staff during the merger, identifying process improvements and numerous other achievements, Julie was justifiably recognised as Employee of the Year.

Customer Testimonials

I absolutely LOVE Horizon Bank! I’ve been with them for more than 20 years and safe to say they’ve supported me through a lot of my life’s milestones. Words can’t describe how amazing Marie, Rochelle, Cathy and all the Horizon crew at Wollongong really are. Here’s cheers to the next 20+years ladies, thanks a million!

Michelle Harrower

My family and I have been with Horizon Bank for 10+ years. They have great customer service and a friendly team. Their staff have assisted us over the years with finding the best options for our financial needs including loans and setting up different accounts. Always very helpful, straight forward and clear!

Victoria Hughes

I love the personal service in this bank and would not go anywhere else. Never had a bad experience here and always accommodating.

Vivian Osborn

I have been with Horizon for many years and can not speak more highly of the service I have received. All staff, at all branches I have dealt with, offer polite friendly service at all times. You know they will be there for you, providing easy solutions or facilitating all your banking needs.

Mel Callaghan

Horizon has surprisingly delighted my wife and I. Friendly professional service from management and staff that really care about their customers and providing customer centric service. Well done Horizon.

Jared Meikle

I was a bank staff of 23 years, I moved to Horizon Bank after leaving the CBA and my team at Moruya branch consistently provide service second to none. I have referred many family and friends to join with approvals for lending insurance etc and them then referring their family.

Ammanda Donnelly

Horizon are honestly just the best. When they were able to give me a home loan (via the brilliant Kim Pattison), I made

the decision to transfer everything to Horizon and this is after being a 21 year member with another bank. Horizon in my opinion, are better than any other bank I have knowledge of, in products and service. Hence why I recommend them to everyone. I’m very proud to be a Horizon customer. Thank you for making banking easy :)

Samantha Callaghan

Having dealt with the Moruya branch of Horizon Bank for the last year, since moving south, I recommend that you pay them a visit and decide if you are banking with the right bank. We brought them the prospect of a small account with a fairly ordinary income stream and a request for a loan and we were treated like good, established customers of the bank.

Having been ignored by my previous long-term bank and my first attempt at a new bank after three approaches each, Horizon set up both savings and loan accounts in short order, remembered our names, helped promptly with our uncertainties and retreated politely into the background to allow us to live our own lives. Well done!!

Since we don’t live in town, we bank electronically and the phone app has worked flawlessly. Thank you, team!

Graeme Kennedy

I’ve been a member of Albion Park Horizon Bank for 19 years. Jo Thompson has been Branch Manager for all this time. Jo has showed such integrity the whole time I have known her, this includes all her staff. I have never belonged to a Bank that treat you like they do. You’re not a number you’re treated like a person.

When you walk into Horizon you’re welcomed by Jo and her staff. I have never had this happen at any other organisation I’ve belonged to before over my life.

Also I am not very tech savvy and Jo and her Staff have always been there to help me.

I would give Horizon Bank Albion Park a 10 out of 10 rating, and recommend anyone considering banks to switch to Horizon. You won’t regret it. Well done Jo Thompson and your staff.

Leanne Millington

Our Communities

At Horizon, one of the things we take pride in is our “boots & all” attitude to contributing to our community. The last two years have been particularly trying ... fires, pandemic & floods. Our South Coast & Illawarra communities have been struggling more than usual. In 21/22 we were out and about assisting in the recovery of South Coast tourism, shining a light on mental health by participating in the R U OK day, supporting community events and collecting items for those doing it tough. Take a peek at just some of the things we were involved in throughout the year.

Winners

We know that our members think so highly of us that 88% of them have indicated they’d recommend us to their friends, family and colleagues.

As a sweetener we often run competitions to open accounts. We do this to increase our membership base. Every member is automatically entered into those draws regardless of whether they’re putting in a good word for us or not.

It’s a cost effective way to advertise in the most effective way possible - through word of mouth. So here’s a tribute to some of our winners.

Sustainability

Reducing our environmental footprint has been something Horizon has been chipping away at for over 15 years.

One of the simplest but most significant sustainability initiatives implemented was our move to renewable energy.

In 2005 we changed our source of electricity to GreenPower for all of our branches and head office. In 2015, we installed a 20 kilowatt solar system at our Wollongong head office.

Horizon’s also been a member of the PrintReleaf Exchange which carbon offsets every piece of paper we’ve printed or copied since 2015.

Other green initiatives we’ve implemented include:

Use of sensor lights to ensure that only occupied offices & meeting rooms have lights on.

Incorporating plants in the workplace. Plants help to purify the air by soaking up the carbon dioxide we breathe out and replacing it with oxygen.

Using recycled paper for our letterheads.

· Encouraging our members to receive electronic rather than paper-based statements.

Setting printers to default to double sided printing.

Creating recycling systems for refuse.

Horizon Bank has made substantial progress but we recognise that there is still so much more we need to do – both through our own actions, and by encouraging our suppliers & customers to consider their environmental footprint.
