Student Testimonial Hi my name is Maya Saunders and I am a Year 12 student at Figtree High. A friend of mine told me about a new TVET course being offered in Digital Animation at Wollongong West TAFE and I got really excited about it. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve always had an interest in animation from a young age and I really liked the idea of doing a HSC subject relevant to my interests in a TAFE learning environment. I felt that it would be beneficial to my creative processes and a good career decision. It would be amazing to one day get a job as an animator and this course is teaching me the principles of animation as well as giving me an appreciation of what is required to achieve professional level animations.

TVET – TAFE While at School What is TVET? If you’re a secondary school student in Years 11 or 12, you can choose to study a TAFE Vocational Education and Training (TVET) course while you’re still at school. TVET gives you the opportunity to complete your HSC while you gain practical work skills and a TAFE NSW qualification.

It’s a great way to build your career and your employability skills. The skills you gain during your TVET course are invaluable and will give you a fantastic head start in life. TVET courses are a great choice as they allow you to gain dual accreditation from the Board of Studies, Teaching and Educational Standards (BOSTES) and TAFE NSW at the same time. Your TVET course can also contribute to your Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) if it is classified as an Industry Curriculum Framework (ICF) course.

How will a TVET course benefit me? TVET courses are designed to lead you to higher TAFE and Higher Education

courses. You will have the opportunity to obtain advanced standing and/or continuing student status in TAFE once you complete your course successfully. Industry recognises the quality of TAFE trained workers. This means your TVET course is incredibly powerful if you would like to enter the workforce, particularly if your course includes a work placement component.

TVET Courses: • have been developed or endorsed by the Board of Studies, Teaching and Educational Standards (BOSTES) • provide credit towards an AQF (Australian Qualifications Framework) qualification which is nationally recognised • count as units of study on the Year 11 Record of Achievement or the Year 12 HSC • may contribute to the ATAR (depending on course selected)

• assist you to acquire new skills and capabilities • are appropriate for any ability level, including those who plan to proceed to higher education study • are taught by teachers who have direct industry links • provide all equipment, materials, protective clothing and texts • provide articulation into traineeship or apprenticeships

your HSC Certificate. If you meet the TAFE requirements you will receive either a Certificate or a Statement of Competencies achieved from TAFE NSW.

Types of TVET Courses All TVET courses count towards HSC unit credit and are classified by the BOSTES as either Industry Curriculum Framework (ICF) courses or Board Endorsed Courses (BEC).

• provide maximum credit transfer into a TAFE NSW Certificate course after you leave school.

Industry Curriculum Framework courses can be examinable and count towards the calculation of your Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR).

Will I get a TAFE Certificate?

Board Endorsed courses are endorsed by the Board of Studies but are not examinable and do not contribute to the ATAR.

At the end of your TVET course, you may receive two sets of credentials. If you successfully complete the course ie. BOSTES HSC requirements, your TVET course will be included on

Pattern of Study TVET 2 unit (120 Hour) Courses

TVET FAST TRACK Courses

These courses run for three or four school terms (4 hours per week) and give students the opportunity to try out a vocational area that they may wish to pursue as a post-school career option. Students undertaking a 120 hour TVET course will receive a Statement of Competencies achieved which will list the units of competency that they have studied. This course gives 2 units of HSC Credit.

These are 240 hour TVET courses delivered in three or four school terms. Students undertaking a TVET Fast Track course will attend TAFE for one full day per week. This course gives 4 units of HSC credit in one year.

TVET 4 Unit (240 Hour) Courses These courses run for six or seven school terms (4 hours per week) commencing in Year 11 and continuing into Year 12. Students receive a solid grounding in the vocational area that can assist with making informed decisions about future study or can lead to direct employment after finishing school. Students undertaking a 240 hour TVET course will receive a Certificate qualification and/or a TAFE Statement of competencies achieved. This course gives 2 units of HSC credit in the Preliminary year and 2 units in the HSC year.

TVET COMBO Courses These courses consist of 2 x 120 hour TVET courses designed to complement each other and delivered one full day per week. Students undertaking these courses will get an understanding of two different industry areas to assist them with post-HSC career options. Students undertaking a Combo course will receive 4 units of HSC credit in one year.

Extension Courses TVET 6 Unit (360 Hour) courses These courses run for seven school terms (6 hours per week) commencing in Year 11 and continuing into Year 12. Students undertaking a 360 hour TVET course will receive a total of 6 units of HSC credit over two years and will receive a TAFE Certificate and/or a Statement of Competencies achieved. The Human Services courses give 4 units of HSC credit in the Preliminary year and 2 units in the HSC year.

You may be able to undertake additional units of study in some courses to gain an additional qualification including the completion of a full Certificate or an additional Statement of Attainment. Students must be enrolled in or have completed the 240 hours Industry Curriculum Framework before enrolling in an extension course.

Work Placement Some courses require you to complete work placement. This is a Board of Studies, Teaching and Educational Standards (BOSTES) requirement and work placement must be completed to ensure the course is counted towards either your preliminary or HSC year of study. Work placement requirements for all courses are shown in this guide.

Attendance at TAFE TVET courses are generally offered at a TAFE Campus for 4 hours, one afternoon per week over one or two years. For more information visit the TVET website: www. illawarra.tafensw.edu.au/tvet

What are the course costs? Students from government schools are supported by funds from the NSW Department of Education and Training - no additional cost to students will be incurred.

Students from non-government schools will need to discuss possible costs with their school. All students are required to pay for their own travel costs to and from TVET courses. Mandatory equipment, safety gear and textbooks will be provided by TAFE.

Students with Additional Needs Students with additional needs and disabilities are encouraged to enrol in and complete TVET courses. Parents, teachers and students should carefully consider: • student career choices • the recommendation of the School Learning and Support team • the likelihood of the student achieving all or some of the competencies or elements of competency for the course

• the mandatory work placement requirements for the course • the student’s ability to complete the required hours of attendance. Students with disabilities will have support requirements determined prior to an Expression of Interest being submitted. Information about this is available at your school. School Based Apprenticeships/Traineeships A School Based Apprenticeship (SBA) or Traineeship (SBT) combines paid work with TAFE training and school. The SBA option is equivalent to the first year of a full-time apprenticeship, whilst an SBT will provide a certificate of proficiency in the traineeship area – a great start for your post-school career options! Both of these options allow students to obtain valuable work skills and experience whilst undertaking paid parttime work as part of their HSC study. Get a Head Start to a Degree There are lots of ways to reach your goal of higher education apart from the traditional HSC and ATAR route. You can work your way to a degree in manageable stages with TAFE. • You can start with a TVET course while you are at school as your first step • After school you can enrol in TAFE to complete either a certificate IV or diploma course and then apply for a degree course. • You can use your TAFE studies to apply for some credit so that you complete your degree quicker

• You can complete degrees at TAFE: The Bachelor of Early Childhood Education and Care (0-5) and the Associate Degree of Accounting Along the way you can get assistance with your writing, research and presentation skills and with small class sizes you get the support that you need to succeed. The diagrams in this booklet show some of the possible pathways you can take in your career.
