2014 HORSE SALES RECAPS NOVEMBER Northern California Yearling and Horses of Racing Age Sale Hefty increases recorded at Northern California Sale The Northern California Yearling and Horses of Racing Age Sale, held at the Alameda County Fairgrounds in Pleasanton on Nov. 25, recorded large across-theboard increases. Total sales reached $1,054,700, an increase of 141 percent over the $438,500 figure from 2013. The average sale price of $12,556 marked a 109-percent increase over last year’s average of $6,007. “The improved results are a reflection on a better quality of horses in the sale,” said Doug Burge, president of the California Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association, which conducted the sale. “It was well supported by both sellers and buyers from northern and southern California.” The sale topper was a unnamed colt by Forestry (Hip No. 30) who sold for a sale-record $75,000. Consigned by H & E Ranch, the colt was purchased by Randy Morris of Anthem, Arizona. The colt is out of the stakes-placed Broken Vow mare Serious Vow, and he is a half brother to last year’s sale topper, Rowdy Dylan, who sold for $60,000 and was eventually pinhooked for $280,000. The second-high seller, an unnamed bay daughter of Artie Schiller (Hip No. 18), was acquired by Al Bresciani of Woodland, California, for $58,000. Consigned by Checkmate Thoroughbreds, the filly is out of Paz Ciudadana (CHI), a 14-year-old mare by Golden Voyager who won four stakes in Texas and Louisiana from 2005-06, including the listed $75,000 Irving Distaff Stakes at Lone Star Park in ’06. Jeff Bonde of Pleasanton paid $50,000 for Top Notch (Hip No. 84), a chestnut daughter of Old Topper and the Royal Anthem mare El Sierra Tahoe. The filly was consigned by agent Sierra Sunset Ranch. A leading trainer on the California circuit, Bonde also paid $50,000 for Suavemente (Hip No. 58, a dark bay or brown son of the stakes-placed Rio Verde stallion Grace Upon Grace and the winning and stakes-placed Proud Irish mare Air Force Woman. Suavemente was

Heritage Place Fall Mixed Sale Grade 1 winner Eye For Corona tops Heritage Place Fall Mixed Sale Eye For Corona, a Grade 1-winning 9-year-old daughter of the Holland Ease stallion Corona Cartel, sold for $132,000 to top the Heritage Place Fall Mixed Sale, held Oct. 31-Nov. 1 in Oklahoma City. Eye For Corona (Hip No. 188) was consigned by Julianna Hawn Holt of Blanco, Texas, and acquired by Mac and Janis Murray’s MJ Farms of Veguita, New Mexico. The mare’s dam, Eye For The Sixes, is a daughter of Mr Eye Opener who ran third in champion Significant Speed’s 2000 Rainbow Derby (Grade 1) at Ruidoso Downs. Racing at Los Alamitos from 2007-08, Eye For Corona earned $1,100,121 from 13 starts, and her four wins included a victory in the $1,157,700 Golden State Futurity (Grade 1) during her 2-year-old campaign. The mare also ran second in the Los Alamitos Two-Million (Grade 1) and Ed Burke Million (Grade 1) futurities. Eye For Corona’s nine starters to date include Ultimate Wave, a colt by champion Wave Carver who won the 2012 AQHA Arapahoe Park Derby Challenge , and Eye For FDD, a stakes-placed gelded son of First Down Dash who was a finalist in the 2012 Golden State (Grade 1) and Los Alamitos Winter (Grade 1) derbies. The mare was bred on March 26 and is believed to be in foal to champion Mr Jess Perry. Jabuti Eagle SA (Hip No. 383), a 4-year-old graded stakes winning stallion by champion One Famous Eagle, was acquired by Salome Gallegos for $95,000. Consigned by Lazy E Ranch LLC as agent for Splenda LLC/Sonia Samaja, Jabuti Eagle SA won last year’s $160,850 Southern California Derby (Grade 1) at Los Alamitos, and the stallion is a half brother to two stakes winners, including 2011 champion aged horse Good Reason SA. Candy Guy (Hip No. 411), was purchased for $75,000 by Marshal S. Wier of Ericson, Nebraska, from consignor Lea Stodart, agent for the estate of Carl C. Pevehouse. A stakes-winning 4-year-old stallion by PYC Paint Your Wagon, Send A Candy Guy has earned $132,352 from 19 outs in Oklahoma, Texas, and Iowa. Mr Barbosa (Hip No. 1) was the top-selling yearling. Consigned by S & E Prepping, the sorrel colt by champion Tempting Dash and half brother to Grade 2 winner Paint Me Perry was acquired for $55,000 by brothers Tom Maher and Bill Maher. A total of 546 head were offered in the sale, of which 439 sold for a gross of $4,198,200. The sale average was $9,563, and the median price was $5,700, 41 percent higher than last year’s median of $4,050. Darling Farms/Darling Oil of Lamont, Oklahoma, was the sale’s leading buyer with 10 purchases for a total of $144,500. 6666 Ranch of Guthrie, Texas, was the top consignor with 23 head selling for $326,100. The sale was preceded by a “Night of Legends” presentation on October 30, which honored longtime horsemen Denny Ekins, Russell Harris, James McArthur, Mike Robbins, Eddie Willis, and Blane Wood. Los Alamitos Equine Sale Big increases in key categories highlight strong Los Alamitos Equine Sale The 10th annual Los Alamitos Equine Sale enjoyed a 16 percent increase in sale average of yearlings over last year’s figures while posting increases in major sale categories like a 19 percent gain in the overall sale average and a 35 percent increase in the median price during its two-day event on October 4-5. The two sessions saw 246 yearlings sold for $4,676,400 for an average of $19,010, the highest sale average for yearlings at the Los Alamitos Equine Sale since 2006. Overall, a total of 261 horses sold for $4,772,600 for a solid average figure of $18,286. The median price for the sale of $11,500 was up significantly over last year’s $8,500. “It was a success,” said Dr. Steve Burns, one of the partners of the Los Alamitos Equine Sale and the second leading consignor. “We experienced hot weather this weekend, but the sale still

enjoyed a good crowd. We are pleased with the results.” For the third straight year, Abigail Kawananakoa had the sale topper after purchasing Free Swinger, a colt by leading stallion Walk Thru Fire for $220,000 on the second day of the sale. From the stock of the sale’s leading consignor, Ed Allred, Free Swinger is out of the Chicks Beduino mare Chickasis. Free Swinger is a full brother to Governor’s Cup Futurity and Derby winner Hot Hitter, an earner of $500,602 in his career. Walk Thru Fire is the sire of 2013 World Champion Last To Fire and champions Higher Fire, Separate Fire, Flame N Flash, and Pink Boots RM. Free Swinger is also a half brother to multiple stakes winner Hard Hitting ($358,923) and former Los Alamitos track record holder Lassen County ($146,229). In 2013, Kawananakoa purchased the co-high seller when acquiring the First Down Dash filly Down Some Gold for $100,000. Carlos Raynal purchased a colt by Corona Cartel out of the Mr Eye Opener mare A Reason To Run named The Cartels Crown for $200,000 to make him the second highest seller. Corona Cartel has sired the winners of more than $45 million. The Cartels Crown is eligible to run in the Ed Burke Million Futurity, Golden State Million Futurity, Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity and the PCQHRA Breeders Series. Also consigned by Burns Ranch, a filly named Perry Sweetheart was the third highest seller after being purchased for $175,000 by Raynal. Perry Sweetheart is a half-sister to 2012 World Champion One Dashing Eagle and a full sister to Golden State Million Futurity winner One Sweet Jess. Perrys Sweetheart is the daughter of champion Mr Jess Perry and out of the First Down Dash mare One Sweet Dash. A sire of 119 stakes winners, Mr Jess Perry’s sons and daughters have earned over $44 million on the track. His progeny include World Champion Apollitical Jess and champions One Famous Eagle, Noconi, Matabari, Miss Racy Jess, and Fredricksburg. Futurity and Phoenix Futurity, but she has made her name on the breeding shed. Golden State Million Futurity winner One Sweet Jess bankrolled $953,592 in his career, while the outstanding One Dashing Eagle is the only American Quarter Horse to have won three races with purses of over $1 million. One Dashing Eagle won the All American Futurity, Golden State Million Futurity and Ed Burke Million Futurity. His career earnings of $2,079,065 rank him fourth all-time in earnings. Raynal, who was the sale’s leading buyer, also purchased a First Down Dash colt named California King from Lazy Creek Ranch for $83,000. The figure made California King, who is the first foal out of the Check Him Out mare Lady Nayan, the sale’s fourth highest seller. Lady Nayan is a half-sister to 1993 champion 2-year-old filly Jumping Tac Flash and 1995 champion 2-year-old colt Splash Bac. Suthern Impact, a colt by the Grade 1-winning First Down Dash stallion Valiant Hero consigned by Steve Holt, agent, sold for $200,000 to top the three-day Heritage Place September Yearling Sale, held Sept. 18-20 in Oklahoma City. Toby Keeton, agent, signed the ticket for Suthern Impact (Hip No. 471). A sorrel colt, Suthern Impact is out of Sheza Neon Rose, a 16-year-old daughter of champion Takin On The Cash who won the 2000 Oklahoma Horsemen’s Association Futurity (RG3) at Fair Meadows at Tulsa. All told, 679 of the 837 yearlings offered sold for a aggregate sum of $10,945,200, an increase of 23 percent over the 2013 total of $8,890,500 for 659 head. The three-day average of $16,120 per yearling marked a 19-percent increase over last year’s three-day average of $13,491. This year’s median price of $10,000 was up 19 percent over the 2013 median of $8,400. Ramon E. Vega was the sale’s leading buyer with 22 head for $307,400, while Bobby D. Cox led all consignors with 26 yearlings selling for a total of $540,900. Two fillies from the Cox consignment, No Entitlements (Hip No. 665) and Runaway Concerto (Hip No. 749), sold for $60,000 each. Corona Cartel was the leading sire (by average with two or more head sold) with 10 yearlings selling for an average of $48,600 per head. American Runaway, a son of two-time AQHA champion Ocean Runaway and the champion 2-year-old in 2010, was the leading first-crop sire with five head selling for an average of $29,800.

2014 LQHBA Yearling Sale: More racing, more money, more opportunities

he Louisiana Quarter Horse Breeders’ Association (LQHBA) is proudly promoting its 38th annual Louisiana Bred Yearling Sale citing the benefits of buying a future racehorse in Louisiana. And why not? Each of the sale grads is eligible to compete in a seven-figure futurity, and with overnight purses fueled by slot revenue, there is upside even at the maiden and allowance levels. This year’s sale took place on Friday, Aug. 8 and Saturday, Aug. 9 at the Coushatta Casino Resort Pavilion in Kinder, Louisiana. The catalog lists 534 yearlings and horsemen all over the country are marking their prospects.
Patterson named director Tony Patterson is the current executive director of the Louisiana Quarter Horse Breeders Association, (LQHBA) with long time director, Leverne Perry, named as executive director emeritus. “The interest in our sale has been very encouraging,” said Patterson. “We sent over 3,500 catalogs to prospective buyers in many regions of the United States as well as Canada and Mexico.” The LQHBA is the official registry of accredited Louisiana-bred Quarter Horses. They run two sales each year, the LQHBA Yearling Sale and a Fall Mixed Sale. Louisiana is the leading state-bred program in the country with more than $4.65 million dollars in mare and stallion awards paid in 2013. Patterson projects that the total will increase in 2015. “In addition to our breeders’ incentives, horsemen have a lot of money to run for in Louisiana, added Patterson. “This year there are 148 guaranteed Quarter Horse race dates at Delta, Evangeline, Louisiana Downs and Fair Grounds with approximately $23 million in purses.”
Increases across the board Last year, 523 yearlings were cataloged and organizers noted a 29 percent increase in gross receipts from 2012. LQHBA reported 367 yearlings sold for $3,810,450, compared to 335 yearlings sold in 2012 for $2,962,600. The average rose 17 percent to $10,383 in 2013 as compared to $8,844 in 2012. ning with a record-breaking $150,000 transaction on the first day of Heza Secret Dash, to Flying G Racing. The colt was consigned by Robicheaux Ranch Inc. JCM Catchacorona, a full brother to 2012 LQHBA Futurity (RG1) winner Open Me A Corona sold for $115,000 with Mike and Mary Ellen Hickman signing the ticket. He was consigned by Tate Farms, agent for Montgomery Equine Center. Heza Fast Dash led all sale sires, by average with two or more sold, with 45 yearlings for an average of $23,262. Game Patriot had 31 yearlings at a $21,042 average, and Coronas Leaving You saw 17 head average $18,388. Since 2010, over 500 yearlings have been cataloged annually in the LQHBA Yearling Sale with gross sales between $2.4 and $2.9 million. There was growth in 2012 with total sales of $2,962,200 with the sale topper, a Jess Louisiana Blue colt sold for $56,000. The average price paid was $8,844 versus $8,241 in 2011. Robicheaux Ranch, LLC has been one of the biggest consignors for the LQHBA Yearling Sale. Their impressive stallion roster includes Heza Fast Dash, Game Patriot, Jet Black Patriot, Toast to Dash, First Down Illusion and One Handsome Man. Ryan Robicheaux serves as sale coordinator for the farm, which is owned by his parents, Jude and Regina. Robicheaux, 34, reports that 99 Robicheaux Ranch yearlings will be shipped to Kinder, the second-highest number in the family’s 14-year association with the LQHBA Yearling Sale. “We have been fortunate over the years with loyal customers and a great association with the LQHBA,” said Robicheaux. “Some people think that racing is the ‘Sport of Kings’, but there are great horses in the yearling sale that don’t cost a fortune.”
LQHBA Breeders’ Futurity and beyond Larry Findley, DVM is president of LQHBA and has been involved in the Yearling Sale since 1983. “We are very proud of the growth of our sale,” said Findley. “There is so much money to run at in Louisiana with our flagship million dollar futurity. Our future plans include more incentives for older horses as well.” Native Louisiana horseman Chris Blanchet operates a full-service farm in Ville Platte and will prepare 50 yearlings for the 2014 Louisiana Bred Yearling Sale.

On July 12, Delta Downs closed its meet with Louisiana Showcase Night featuring eight stakes including the $645,645 Lee Berwick Futurity (RG1). The 350-yard Lee Berwick Futurity victory went to the aptly named Game, who closed tenaciously under jockey Orlando Baldillez. Owner Joseph Landreneau purchased the son of Game Patriot out of the Hotdoggin mare Hot Charge in the 2013 LQHBA Sale for just $12,000. Game is on the brink of a half a million dollars in career earnings. Perhaps one of the most astute purchases in recent sale history came in 2012 when Jaime Torres purchased Fjr Bread N Butter for just $8,500 from breeder Ricky John Broussard. One year later, the gelded son of Heza Fast Dash won the $564,895 Lee Berwick Futurity (RG1) in a track record setting performance. It’s not just the juvenile stars that make a great case for purchasing a future star at the LQHBA Yearling Sale. Oscar Rohne signed a $8,200 ticket on Kool Design in the 2012 LQHBA Yearling Sale. The striking chestnut son of First N Kool made only two starts as a 2-year-old, with both his owner and trainer, Kenneth Roberts, Sr. feeling that he needed time to mature and develop. Their patience was rewarded on July 12 when Kool Design, at odds of 40-1, pulled the upset in the $217,545 Delta Downs Louisianabred Derby (RG2). It’s safe to say that he will continue to add to his career bankroll of $144,736. Fast Talkin Henry captured the $100,000 Louisiana Classic (RG2) for older horses. The 4-year-old son of Heza Fast Dash is trained by Heath Taylor. Owner Eric P. Johnson purchased Fast Talkin Henry from breeder Russell Moward at the 2011 LQHBA Yearling Sale for $16,500. He has won seven of his 14 starts with $313,824 earned to date.
Bigger and better plans The sale has experienced phenomenal growth since its inception in 1977. The first sale, held at Delta Downs offered 39 yearlings; and on Aug. 8-9, 534 accredited Louisiana-bred yearlings will pass through the sale ring. Officials have been extremely pleased with the Coushatta Casino Resort Pavilion venue, which offers first-rate lodging, dining and gaming. The sale will include online coverage, and for the first time, an interpreter for Spanish-speaking attendees. “We work hard each year to improve our sale and do the best job of accommodating the owners,” adds Findley. With the continued success and depth of the breeding program in Louisiana, future stars of racing are just one bid away. “You just have to do your homework and have a little luck,” acknowledges Robicheaux. “There are good stories behind every yearling.” The breeders have done their job; prospective buyers will have over 500 chances to purchase the next great Louisiana champion! JANUARY Heritage Place Winter Mixed Sale Numbers Up at Heritage Place Winter Mixed Sale The three-day Heritage Place Winter Mixed Sale ended on Jan. 25 with increases in average and median prices and gross receipts. Of the 873 head offered in the catalog, 698 head sold. This year’s average price of $12,168 was 45 percent higher than last year’s $8,397 average, while the median price increased 44 percent to $6,500. Despite the fact that 228 fewer head sold this year, the total gross reached $8,493,100, an increase of 9 percent over the 2013 total gross of $7,775,350. “We’ve had an amazing weekend,” said Heritage Place general manager Spence Kidney. “Heritage Place would like to say ‘Thank You’ to all of the consignors, and we wish all of the buyers the best of luck with their purchases. t’s been done before. The first to come to mind is Teller Cartel, who won his maiden in the 2005 Grade 1, $1.9 million All American Futurity. Now, a horse winning his maiden in a major Grade 1 race has been done again. It’s rare, but it can be done. That’s why owners keep making those futurity payments. You can’t win, if you don’t enter. Torts On Fire, a 13-1 maiden, got the best start of his five-race career and went on to earn $372,117 in the Grade 1, $860,519 Texas Classic Futurity for owners Terry and Irene Stennett. The gelding is bred by the Dunn Ranch and was trained by Trey Wood. Sired by Walk Thru Fire and out of the Mr Jess Perry mare Queen Of Torts, Torts On Fire was third in his trial to the Grade 1, $900,000 Rainbow Futurity and a close second, beaten by a neck, in his trial to the Grade 1, $2.6 million All American Futurity at Ruidoso Downs. The gelding was then third in his Texas Classic Futurity trial and made his first futurity finals as the eighth-fastest qualifier. He made an impressive late run in his trial and that may explain why he was 13-1 and not at longer odds. Torts On Fire is as much of an outcross as you can find in quarter horse racing these days. He is bred 5S x 5D to Easy Jet. His sire Walk Thru Fire qualified for the 1999 Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity and retired with $94,280 in earnings. While the leading breeding farms weren’t lining up to stand the young stallion, they would be in a few years when his first crop hit the track and his daughter Higher Fire became a two-time champion. The stallion had a couple of things in his favor: He has tremendous conformation and one of those spotless pedigrees that is respected by true horsemen. wner/breeder and AQHA past president Jerry Windham, a former Texas A&M basketball player, has scored again. Windham’s mare, Veva Jean, has impacted Grade 1 stakes this year more than any other mare. Her daughter, William Smith’s Trendi, won the Grade 1, $900,000 Rainbow Futurity back in July and her son, homebred Stimulus, won the Grade 1, $350,000 Bank of America Challenge Championship on Oct. 18. Windham and Veva Jean have produced big scores in the past. Windham’s homebred Stolis Winner, a full brother to Trendi, was the world champion at two when he won the Grade 1, $1.9 million All American Futurity, Grade 1, $625,000 Rainbow Futurity and the Grade 1, $1,084,194 Heritage Place Futurity. Stolis Winner and Trendi are each sired by Stoli while Stimulus is sired by Mr Jess Perry. Windham was one of the first horsemen outside of California to pay attention to Beduino (TB), who was standing at Vessels Stallion Farm next to Los Alamitos Race Course at the time. He went to the 1983 PCQHRA Yearling Sale and found a Beduino (TB) filly named Indigo Illusion. Indigo Illusion turned out to be pure speed and earned $476,890 on her way to induction into the AQHA Hall of Fame. The highlight of her career came in the 1984 Faberge Special Effort Futurity. She raced the 440-yards in :21.26 for the fastest quarter mile ever by a two-year-old at the time. Finishing second was Rise N High and third was future (1984) world champion Dashs Dream. The time approached the legendary :21.17 track record sent by Dash For Cash in the 1976 Champion of Champions. Each of those times were set during daytime racing at Los Alamitos. Windham went to all the major sales and farms looking for correct offspring of Beduino (TB). He found a colt named Runaway Winner, the sire of Veva Jean. Runaway Winner won the 1987 Grade 1, $436,172 Kindergarten at Los Alamitos and then the 1988 Grade 1, $222,780 El Primero Del Ano Derby when it was run at Bay Meadows for several years. Runaway Winner became a leading sire when he hit the breeding barn. He sired champions Deceptively and Treacherously among his 65 stakes winners and 103 stakes-placed competitors. One of those stakes-placed horses was Veva Jean, who ran second in the Grade 3 Barnmaster Sprint Stakes. Then Windham took his affection for Beduino (TB) breeding one step further by line breeding the stallion. This line breeding produced Stolis Winner and Trendi.

Stoli, the sire of Stolis Winner and Trendi, is by First Down Dash and out of Strawberry Silk. The Beduino (TB) sired Strawberry Silk won the 1989 Grade 1, $2 million All American Futurity. She became a champion producer when Stoli was named 2001 champion 3-year-old. She produced three other stakes winners and is a member of the Ruidoso Downs Racehorse Hall of Fame. Therefore, Stolis Winner and Trendi are bred 3S x 3D to Beduino (TB) with each cross through champion producers. Stimulus’ pedigree also shows line breeding, but to Streakin Six instead of Beduino (TB). The gelding is bred 3 s x 3d to Streakin Six, a son of Easy Six. The Easy Jet-sired Easy Six won the Sun Country Futurity and the Kansas Derby for trainer Don Farris. Sandy Farris, Don’s wife, said Easy Six would get so excited during the races that his groom put cotton in his ears to help calm the studdy colt. He had to be ponied with an exercise rider or jockey up. Easy Six was on his way to making an historic impact in quarter horse racing before he died when he was six-years-old in 1978. The summer after he died, Streakin Six and the Easy Six-sired Sages Belle Star ran one-two in the Grade 1, $422,815 Rainbow Futurity and then Streakin Six finished second in the Grade 1, $1 million All American Futurity. Also in that All American Futurity, Sages Belle Star was fifth and the Easy Six-sired Easy Azuree was seventh. (Denim N Diamonds finished between them.) Streakin Six, Sages Belle Star and Easy Azuree were from Easy Six’s first crop. His second crop included All American Futurity finalist Six Fols, who defeated eventual All American Futurity winner Higheasterjet in their All American Futurity trial. Easy Six sired 146 starters, 109 winners and 14 stakes winners. Easy Six was owned by a syndicate when he died. However he raced for the S.B. Burnett Estate (Anne Tandy, et al). With the backing of the Burnett Estate/6666 Ranch and the other syndicate members, Easy Six could have become a most influential sire. Stimulus is sired by Mr Jess Perry, one of the top-three alltime leading sires of money earners. Mr Jess Perry is sired by the Streakin Six son Streakin La Jolla. Veva Jean is out of the Streakin Six daughter Swing Step Sue, who produced the graded stakes-placed Racing Zone, in addition to Veva Jean. Veva Jean is climbing up the list of all-time leading producers of money earners. She currently fourth with her offsprings’ earnings nearing the $3 million mark. One of the mares ahead of her, in second position, is the Runaway Winner daughter Runaway Wave. Trendi will return to Ruidoso Downs next summer when the three Grade 1 derbies are projected to make total purses of more than $4 million. Stimulus is now a Grade 1 winner and the gelding is eligible to the Grade 1, $600,000 Champion of Champions at Los Alamitos in December. ou’ve heard it. Probably said it. “There are too few outcrosses in quarter horse racing.” Yeah, yeah, yeah. It’s all First Down Dash, Corona Cartel and Mr Jess Perry. Fill out the list with the next seven horses on the all-time leading sires of money earners: Dash For Cash, Chicks Beduino, Easy Jet, Strawfly Special, Streakin La Jolla and Feature Mr Jess. Guess what? The leading older Quarter Horse at Ruidoso Downs, with a pair of graded stakes wins, does not have any of the above stallions in his first three generations. Raymundo Medrano and Sammy Valeriano’s Jody Pops Zoomer goes into the Grade 1, $200,000 All American Gold Cup – which carries a Champion of Champions invite to the winner – off wins in the Grade 3 Highesterjet Handicap at 350 yards and the Grade 3 Mr Jet Moore Stakes at 400 yards. He won the Grade 1, $394,000 Texas Classic Derby at 440 yards and was moved up to third in this year’s Grade 1, $154,740 Remington Park Championship at a quarter mile. Jody Pops Zoomer runs with a powerful stride, devouring ground. Yet, he does not hail from the most fashionable of pedigrees. Just a pedigree filled the racehorses. Trainer Blane Wood once told me: “I’ll take all the horses with Pop Pop in their pedigree.” The Pop Pop thing started with Jody Pops Zoomer’s second dam Gotta Pop Pop by Bobby Que, a son of Three Chicks and a Go Man Go mare. Gotta Pop Pop was old school. She set a track record at G. Rollie White Downs and was second in the Poor Boy Sprint Futurity. She won two of four starts at two, her only year of racing. She joined the broodmare band and excelled while being bred to a variety of stallions. Bred to Jody O Toole, Gotta Pop Pop produced Grade 2 Manor Downs Derby winner Jodies Pop Pop and Jody Pops Zoomer dam Jody Pops Little Sis, winner of the Grade 3 Dixie Stallion Futurity and third in the Grade 2 Manor Downs Derby. Bred to Dash For Randy, she produced Grade 2 TQHA Sales Futurity winner Randys Pop Pop. Bred to Special Elan, she produced TQHA Sires’ Cup Futurity winner Gotta Special Pop, dam of Evangeline Downs Derby winner Shake Em Special Pop. The tail-male line of Jody Pops Zoomer provides generations of production. It goes back to Three Bars (TB) in the seventh generation. Jody Pops Zoomer’s sire Zoomin For Bux is sired by Shazoom. The tail-male line continues with Takin On The Cash, Dash For Cash, Rocket Wrangler, Rocket Bar (TB) and then Three Bars (TB). Zoomin For Bux earned $259,739 and set a Retama Park 350yard track record of 17.240 seconds while winning the Grade 1 Retama Park Futurity. Zia Park, Hobbs, NM Trainer Joel Marr reaches 1,000-win milestone at Zia Park One big win after another in New Mexico added up to 1,000 on Tuesday for trainer Joel Marr. Marr tallied his 1,000th career Thoroughbred victory by winning the 11th race on Nov. 11 at Zia Park with Sweet Diamond. “To me, it’s about each one,” Marr said. “Those special horses are what makes it fun and makes it worth it to me.” The 46-year-old trainer from Tularosa, New Mexico collected his first victory in 1991. His father, Gerald, is also a trainer. Marr followed in his father’s footsteps after receiving his bachelor’s degree in animal science with a minor in business from New Mexico State University in 1989. “I’ve been around it all my life, and so it’s something that just came naturally,” Marr said. “I decided not to go work for
anybody and started on my own.” Marr leads all trainers in Zia Park’s $2 million New Mexico Cup series with 21 victories. Four New Mexico Cup wins came with stable star Peppers Pride, whom Marr trained to a North American record 19 career victories without a loss from 2005 to 2008. “She was my favorite,” Marr said. “She was different than any other horse. She was special – kind of horse slash human. She was that smart and always had that look in her eyes.” Marr notched four wins on the 2014 New Mexico Cup Day on Oct. 26. The four wins were a testament to Marr’s training regimen as all four victories came with horses making their first starts off layoffs. “It’s something you want to have all your breeds ready for if they’re that caliber because it’s the best purses,” Marr said. “There’s so many downs and ups, and I try to keep it even-keeled. You have to do everything right because you know they’re going to try.” Despite all his success at the highest level of racing in New Mexico, Marr is quick to deflect the credit to a team that has been with him for many years. Armando Gonzalez and Antonio Leos have been his grooms for 20 years and 15 years, respectively. Tony Mathiasen has been his assistant trainer of six years. Marr also credits his wife, Teresa, a former jockey in New Mexico. They have two children—Shacie, 12, and Shaeden, 10. “It takes a lot of time and effort to get something done right, and you need to have good people around you,” Marr said. “You can’t do it by yourself, and I have a lot of good people that have been with me for a long time.”

The 2015 live racing season, the 20th in track history, is scheduled to run 70 days from April through September including the 80th running of the Grade 3 Longacres Mile in August. The stable area opens Feb. 1.

The Los Alamitos Cash Bonanza is this track’s version of the Triple Crown and consists of the Grade 1 Ed Burke Million Futurity on June 22, the Grade 1 Golden State Million Futurity on Nov. 2, and next month’s Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity. Heza Dasha Fire has already won the Ed Burke Million and Golden Million Futurity and a victory in the Los Alamitos Two Million would make Quarter Horse racing history. Only two horses have been in a position to win the Los Alamitos Cash Bonanza since the program’s inception in 1998. Hawkish won the first two legs of the series in 2003 (at the time the first two races of the series were the Kindergarten Futurity and Ed Burke), but finished out of the money in the final leg. Heza Dasha Fire also improved his career record to a perfect six wins in as many starts. Cruz Mendez piloted him for trainer Jose Flores. “That was a tough trial,” said Don Meneely, who along with his wife, Kathy, and their son, Shawn, make up the Kennewick, Washington-based S-Quarter K LLC. “That trial was like a final. BF Farm Boss is a super horse and the trial also had (Golden State Million Futurity finalist) Streakin Regard and Oneapolliticalflight, who was second in the Ed Burke Million final. It was like a futurity final. Heza Dasha Fire broke really good and he was fast into his stride. It was an exhilarating win. After he won his maiden (by 2 ¾ lengths) we had numerous, substantial offers to buy him. We wanted to race this horse. We thought that he would be able to make some money, but we never envisioned that he would be as good as he has become.” Heza Dasha Fire won the Ed Burke Million Futurity by 1 ¼ lengths and then recovered from a very troubled start to win the Golden State Million Futurity by a half-length. He’s earned $822,552 in his six starts. First place in the Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity is worth $842,425. If Heza Dasha Fire wins the Los Alamitos Two Million plus the $1 million bonus, his earnings for the year will be $2,664,977. That would be an all-time record for earnings in a single year by a Quarter Horse and it would leave him $116,388 shy of Ochoa’s all-time earnings record of $2,781,365. Don and Peggy Boyle’s BF Farm Boss figured to give Heza Dasha Fire a run for the money after winning the PCQHRA Breeders Futurity by a head following a strong come-from-behind effort. The Oregon-bred Hawkinson gelding was ninth at the start in this race, but was flying in the final 100 yards of his trial race. BF Farm Boss finished with the sixth fastest time of :19.704. “I’m tickled to death with how BF Farm Boss ran,” said trainer Paul Jones. “Heza Dasha Fire is the best 2-year-old in the nation. I first said that after he broke his maiden (on April 27) and he’s done nothing to make me change my mind. I think he could be the first Los Alamitos Cash Bonanza winner. BF Farm Boss was less than a length away from him tonight. That’s among the closest any horse has come to
Heza Dasha Fire this year.” Rancho El Cabresto’s Apollitical Blood shared the honors of being the fastest qualifier to the Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity after winning his trial race by a half length in a time of :19.557. Apollitical Blood has now qualified to four races with purses of $1 million or more this season. The son of World Champion Apollitical Jess, Apollitical Blood was fifth in the Ed Burke Million and fourth in the Grade 1 All American Futurity before finishing second after having the early lead in the running of the Golden State Million earlier this month. “We know how good Heza Dasha Fire can be,” said owner Juan Alberto Tirado Lizarraga of Rancho El Cabresto. “We thought we had him in the Golden State Million, but he came back to beat us. He’s a real tough horse. Apollitical Blood broke great and ran straight in this race. I’m thrilled with this horse. He’s qualified to million dollar races four times year and he’s also a stud prospect. He also looks a lot more relaxed in the saddling paddock. He has matured a lot.” Now a winner of three of eight career starts, Apollitical Blood was bred by Bruce and Jill Thompson. Juan Aleman saddled Apollitical Blood, who was ridden by Cesar De Alba. Record-breaking performances in the second-annual $1.1 million Land of Enchant-
ment Day and significant increases in wagering handle highlighted Zia Park’s 10th year of live Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse racing in Hobbs, N.M. The 2014 season concluded on Tuesday. Land of Enchantment Day Nov. 26 included track records by Canadian graded stakes winner Alert Bay in the $200,000 Zia Park Derby at 1 1/16 miles and by New Mexico-based Isn’t He Clever in the $150,000 Zia Park Championship at 1 1/8 miles. The total handle of $1.28 million on Land of Enchantment Day was the second highest in Zia Park’s history. Zia Park also reached the $1 million handle mark on October 6, marking the first time ever that Zia Park has tallied multiple million-dollar days. “We really took a big step forward this season,” said Zia Park Director of Racing Operations Fred Hutton. “The quality of horses that came to Zia Park for our big races – particularly for Land of Enchantment Day – was the best we’ve ever seen at Zia.
