AG M D N A R B WINTER We have fun all year, but as soon as Fall starts, we get more and more restless. It’s 4
already in our heads...crunching of snow under foot, the pow pow feel when you crush the powder under your snowboard and it pushes you to the best feeling in the world. You land a trick off the rail and you see it in slow motion. You feel like Eiki during a stylish noseslide on a triple kink. The feeling you have in the air when you just hold the grab and you stretch it as much as possible. Even though you’re too tired from the day’s riding, you still go out with your friends and party. Winter is the coolest season of the year! This year we‘re looking forward to Winter even more than usual. We’ve made many innovations and improvements to our Winter 2015 collection. We’ve added a new friends to the team and we have a lot of amazing projects and trips on our to-do-list. This Winter is going to be sick! We don‘t want to tell you that our product is the best and technically most advanced because you already know that. We ride our stuff with pride and we’re really happy that we can depend on it when we need it the most. We have prepared a bunch of great interviews and stories for you, so dive in! Just turn the page and enter Winter, Horsefeathers Winter 2015/16. We hope you enjoy it to the max. See you on the mountains! Horsefeathers Crew

It’s officially called ‘corporate social responsibility’, but for us it‘s the basis of our attitude towards the world around us. Long before this topic became a popular subject, we were interested in our influence on the environent, on the people we work with, and where and how our products are made.

! H S A R T SICK OF Ecology is an important part of our lives. In the modern world no one can take clean surroundings and nature for granted and it is obvious as we see trash everywhere around us. Still, we want to have the possibility to walk in clean forests, mountains or beaches, so even though these are very small steps we try and contribute wherever we can. It starts with recycling paper and plastic, riding our bikes to work, travelling by train instead of car, cancelling of external warehouses thus greatly limiting our driving. The trash is definitely a problem of our civilization. When you look around, it’s everywhere. So in order to take more small steps we decided to act through
We want to know not only who sells our product, but also who made them and how they are made. Pavel Kubíček, the Horsefeathers co-founder, is in charge of production. He’s an avid snowboarder and skater. Our products are made in many factories around the world and Pavel has
our Sick of Trash movement. Whether it be trash in the parking lot, garbage in the forrest or on the mountain, or just empty plastic bottles in a skatepark.... that is exactly what we are fighting against. The Sick of Trash campaign helps to make our surroundings cleaner and more beautiful. Check www.sickoftrash.eu for more information.
spent months on factory floors working with factory owners and workers. We need to know that the working conditions for the people making our snowboard jackets and pants are a safe and positive environment. Over the years we have established friendly ties with our producers and most of them have visited us in our Headquarters in Pilsen. Being from the town that produces the best beer in the world helps, too. If you are interested in this topic, don’t hesitate to contact us at info@horsefeathers.eu.
Some plastic from recycling programs also ends up in eco-materials such as the UltraTech ECO Shell. This recycled nylon is not only functional, but also highly ecological. Maybe your bottle from last year in the snowpark that you sorted correctly has been used to make one of our jackets! The cycle might end with the recycled jacket, but it begins with our attitude towards the environment!

17
Do you have some good advice on how to build a larger backcountry kicker? How much time can it take? First is location, you need a sick big open steep landing, but that is useless without a bit of a flat preceded by a long in-run to get lots of speed to go to the moon! Once you have a spot, become an eskimo: build blocks. Best tool is a saw but you can chop out blocks with your shovel like a tourist, but it will you will save you hours! But still if you are a crew of 3 riders, a filmer and a photographer, builing a big booter that will send you 20 meters or so on a horizontal plane can easily take 4 hours, and it all depends of the feature and how much snow is needed to be moved. Do all final shaping with your boards and always use snowshoes because snowboard boots leave holes everywhere. But my word of advice is: BLOCKS! What’s your favorite powder destination? And what about some really unusual place, where you rode pow? 18
I think my favorite would be Japan only because I love the texture of the snow there. I’m always excited to go snowboarding in new places, after all these years I realise that the greatest gift from snowboarding and in life is getting the oportunity to see the world and the perspective one gets from it. We absolutely agree and we are looking forward to going somewhere in the powder! Thanks for the interview and usefull hints. See you soon and if you would like to say thanks to someone or just send word to someone... go for it! Thanks to my family and loved ones, my sponsors, my homies, the people who respect what I do and to the laws of nature that allow this existence for me to fly through the air doin‘ ma ting…

Hey Eiki, how’s it going up north, do you already have snow up there? Yoo, everything is going good up here, no snow around, but it should happen in a month or so, we usually start filming at the end of November. I think it´s not necessary to introduce you, so the very first question is directed to your homeland. In Iceland, you have a lot of snow during a relatively large part of the year, but there are no big mountains, so please tell us how is snowboarding in Iceland? We do have a lot of snow during the winter months and few pretty good ski resorts, what we are missing though, are good parks, the resorts have started to make them, but it’s still pretty far behind compared to other countries, so that‘s why we grew up riding mostly street rails because that‘s what we had. What about living in Monaco? Lots of sun, fast and expensive cars and hot girls. That is a bit of a change from Iceland, isn’t it? Maybe not the girls, you also have hot ones in Iceland ;) It‘s a huge change from Iceland, but I love it. Always nice, sunny & stable weather. We don’t really fit in with the people but that‘s just funny. It‘s crazy to see how much money some people have and how they spend it on crazy things like yachts & cars. Speaking about girls, you told us the story of how the pretty ones go to Iceland and the ugly ones go to the UK. As Iceland only has about 300k people, you have a program, or app to detect family ties, to make sure you’re not hooking up with your cousin. That’s pretty crazy.

Then I started getting sponsors for snowboarding, so I started to focus more on snowboarding. I like skateboarding a lot, I used to skate only street, but when I 32
started my snowboarding career, I kinda slowed down on the gnarly stuff. Now I love to skate mini ramps, but boxes and rails will always be my favorite. Have you ever ridden in a skate contest? I did one back in the day. I went to the capital city, Reykjavik, with my friends & ended up in 2nd place, super stoked on that. For the next Horsefeathers collection, we are working together on your signature line and we are all really stoked on it. There are samples already and it will be sick! But what are your favorite items from the current Winter collection? I can‘t wait to see how my pro model looks in real life. I really like the fit and feel of all the product I have tried so far. My favourite is the Nolan jacket and for riding the basic Leader sweatshirt. Horsefeathers are deffinitely killing it with the stuff.

Zdravstvuyte Nikolay! How are you? Winter is coming, so you must have a lot of work to do. You have two position as both a rider and a businessman. Let’s talk first about the rider’s part. How long have you been riding and why did you start? I’ve been riding about 17 years. I began simply enough, as my dad is one of the first guys who brought snowboarding to Siberia from Vladivostok. He buys cars in Vladivostok and sells them. He also brought snowboards with the cars. We learned to ride together. My dad can still do 15 meter long jumps.

Ok! Egor Chebanov – a young jib rider. He has a very technical style throwing down a lot of cool tricks. I like his Bs Lip Pretzel Out. Egor rips on wakeboard as well. Slava Abramov – young jib rider as well. Slava’s a very stylish rider, he’s like a cat. I really like to watch how Slava lands tricks. Alexey Batmanov - experienced rider with more than one good video profile. This guy really busts the streets!
We’re looking forward to the new winter collection, what is your favorite style and what do you think will be most popular in Russia? Most of all I like all products with a high membrane: 20k breathable and 20k waterproof. I also like the snow skirt feature on the Horsefeathers pants, this is just great! I haven’t seen this from anybody else! It really is a very convenient thing. When you’re waist-deep in snow in the mountains, this thing you more than anything else! Do Russians really drink that much vodka? The older generation does, yes. Same story in remote villages and towns. But in the big cities, young people do not like it. For some time now, there is a tendency to live a healthy lifestyle in Russia. But a lot of strange and stupid situations in Russia do exist. I mean, I’ve seen some crazy shit. In our country a lot of hard to understand and rather absurd situations happen. Okay Nikolay, thanks for your time, looking forward to riding together at the sales meeting and now you’ve got space for a message, greetings, thank you list. You too, thanks for taking the time to do this interview. Hi to all my friends! Also everyone who rides Joint snowboards. A great big thank you and hello to the whole Horsefeathers crew! And everyone who is into snowboarding! Snowboarding - it’s freedom! It’s love!

Hi Marion, tell us where you are at the moment and what are you doing? Hi everybody, I’m in front of my computer at the office for my lunch break. So this is a bit surprise for us :) For those who don’t know you, introduce yourself briefly. I’m from Toulouse and I began snowboarding at the age of 15 in the Pyrénées (mountains between Spain and France). I competed in boardercross during the first years, then slopestyle started my travelling around the world. Now I look for powder a natural jumps, when I’m not working. I am an architect in Toulouse from Monday to Friday. You are part of the snowboard team at Horsefeathers, but you’re really active, doing many other things. Is snowboarding still number one, or something else right up on the list? I love mountains, so I engage in many activities on the mountain slopes: paragliding, mountainbiking, hiking. I’ll confess I think there is nothing better than paragliding when I fly. But I think there is nothing better than snowboarding when I’m in powder! So snowboarding is up there with paragliding. Let’s talk about snowboarding. What was the most amazing thing you experienced with snowboarding? I think every powder day abroad is an amazing experience, because your senses are more stimulated than at home. That’s why my best experience was traveling and riding in Japan last winter. Every day was beter than the day before. We were in massive powder all the time and that was so good! Movies don’t lie: Japanese winter is incredible. Every true snowboarder should go there!
61
Where can we find you the most often, in the snowpark or in powder? Both! I love to jump an to try new tricks again and again. But powder is the priority if it is out there. I am a fan of snowpark and freeride, but you can also find me on groomed slopes with my snowboard club, pushing carving turns and training giant slalom! Is there rivalry between the girls that pushes them, or is it more that you ride with the guys and try to keep up with them? Girls who ride strong are rare. So I don’t wait for them to push my limits. I mostly ride with guys for this reason. I watch the guys and observe their style and techniques. But I watch many girl videos, because they prove it’s always possible to progress a lot more. Guys’ level can’t be the same as girls’: our body, our brain, and our hormones are not equal. Who influenced you more? Women riders, or guy riders? Who is your favourite rider?
62
I prefer to speak about women who influenced me, because the guys don’t need it! I follow Marie-France Roy and Annie Boulanger for big freeride runs and backcountry. Christy Prior is the best exemple for style in the snowpark. And I watch each video from Jamie Anderson, hoping to get a little bit of the ease she rides with. Riding with the guys must be sometimes a little tough for a girl. We all know that snowboarders can go a bit crazy sometimes. How did you handle this? Yes, It is. Maybe that’s why I’ve got many injuries. For a long time I tried to follow them on every big air, every clif, every rail. Now I handle this better. I listen to my body and I analyze situations. Too big? Let’s hit the

smaller one. Bad for my pride though.
Tell us what your plans are for this winter? Travel destinations, contests? I have the simple goal to enjoy my weekends and holidays like I did last winter. I will try to film more, and concentrate on photo shoots. Thanks to my bosses, I can manage my winter enough time off, and I hope I will go to Mt. Baker in the US at the end of season. I have been nominated for the legendary Mt. Baker Banked Slalom! That’s awesome! If I can’t travel abroad, I have many places to visit and ride in the Pyrénées and Alps. What is your favourite resort in France, where would you take us riding? I would take you to my home, Peyragudes. Even if it’s not the best resort. I know many great lines and playgrounds. Also Peyragudes is in the centre of Pyrénées, near the fabulous snowparks of Andorra, surrounded by many wild freeride runs, full of nice and fun people, not too far from the Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea. So you are welcome to my paradise! The new Horsefeathers collection is in stores now, what is your favorite product in the new collection? I chose to wear red Julia jacket with black Katja pants for snowboarding. Also, my favorite products would be the whole new collection of neckwarmers and the Anikka jacket. Thanks a lot, Marion, looking forward to riding together!

Hi Láďa, please introduce yourself. My name si Láďa, I‘m 13 years old and I come from Kaplice. How many years have you been riding and what got you into snowboarding? I’ve been riding for 8 years already. First, I was skiing, but I had no fun, so I tried snowboarding and I stayed with it. Later on, I saw guys jumping at a snow park, so obviously I wanted to try it as well. What do you like most about snowboarding? Riding simply keeps me smiling, but the best thing is when I have a chance to hit a really big jump. What are your plans for this season? This winter is truly loaded. I would like to go to the Junior World Championship, so I need to learn a 9 and 10, which will not be easy. And as for the contests, I would prefer to take part in international ones. Do you have any snowboarding idol and what style of snowboarding do you like the most? My snowboard idol is undoubtely Marcus Kleveland, because he made his first triple at the age of 13 and now he has no problem to do a bs 10 from a small bumb. That is really the

most insane thing. What are you looking forward to this season in terms of Horsefeathers snowboarding? I hope that we’ll go on a snowboard trip together with Eiki Helgason, that would be amazing! Now a typical teenager question, do you have a girlfriend? I don´t and it makes me mad. Whatever, my FB profile is lada.hrstka.7 just in case some girl would like to contact me :-) So let’s see if any snowboard girl will write you. Thanks and have a great season. Hi Stepanka, Hey Pepe, tell us a bit more about what you do at Horsefeathers. S/P: Basically we sit on the couch all day and watch snowboard and surf videos. We drink lots of coffee and from time to time, we get a design idea. This is what our friends think designers do. But the reality is much more interesting. When we create the collections, we need to have an interesting theme to create new styles of clothing like jackets, pants, sweatshirts, and t-shirts. We travel to different cities and the mountains for inspiration. This is where we get ideas for colors and designs. We also cooperate with artists on graphic design for tees and such. Then we design the separate items and produce samples. It takes a lot of work before we have the perfect samples which are then photographed. You are now finished with the winter 2016/17 collection and you will soon start designing the spring 2017 collection. You seem to live in the future, so do you have any problems with this in the real life?
Photo: Tomáš Vojtas
terproof parka, for example, which is perfect in adverse conditions when it rains and snows a lot. We also added lightweight, waterproof jackets and vests made of microfibres, which you can wear everywhere, because you can pack them easily. Another item is a stylish softshell jacket and shirt, that is as far from any outdoor product as you can imagine. To make the collection flawless, I have added also a stylish tee and slim-fit pants as a first layer. To make a long story short, the whole collection is composed of functional, yet stylish clothing, which can be layered and provide comfort and warmth in all conditions. If you could choose only one product from the Technical Apparel collection that you like the most, what is it and why? S: This is not a good question for a girl :-) I would definitely choose more than one piece from the collection. I already have the functional leggings, Greta, with a print of the night sky that matches the long sweatshirt and there is a perfect match with Kristina, the microfiber jacket. My favorite jacket is Anikka in olive color. P: In that case, I’m probably girl too, because choosing just one style is really impossible. I love Flip jeans. The most S: Sure we do. We are two years older already. P: It is exactly the opposite for me. I am always surprised that it is only 2015 and that I am not two years older :-) What inspires you the most? S: The people surrounding me in the city, on the hill, on the beach. Definitely people who have their own style. P: It is the board sports industry which we are a part of. It’s the form as well as the content. I could never get used to an environment of suits and ties, even though that for some occassions it really is a neccessity. I have the same feelings as Stepanka. When I am in the mountains, I always check out other peoples’ clothing. It’s a weird, but a cool side-effect of this job. There is a new category of product called Technical Apparel in the current winter collection. What’s the idea behind that? S/P: We were missing items which would be functional and stylish and not only for the mountains. We have proved with a few jackets in the past, that it is great to have functional street designs. A simple wa-
comfortable jeans in the world! But to point out my favorite it would be the Cathode vest. I was stoked to include it in the collection. What product would you like to add to the collection in the future? S: I really wanted to have some women’s clothing for running and yoga in the collection. Since the spring 2016 collection is now being produced, I can reveal that there are great new pieces in this segment. Let us surpsise you. P: There is always a huge wish list of cool new items to be added into the collection, but the product range is not endless and not everything we design makes it into the line. But there is a lot of new things we have in the works for each collection. That’s what clothing and outerwear design is all about - always innovating and creating new and cool stuff. Thank you for your time and for the great job! Anything to shout out? S: I just wish for snow, lots of snow. P: Just come and visit some Horsefeathers events. We plan a lot of them right from the beginning of the new snowboard season and these are the times to meet and talk together over a drink, which is always the best way.

Hi Jakub, please introduce yourself. Hi. I am 22 years old, I live, study, work, create and skate in Brno. You have been really active this year. What is something to look back on? This year brought a lot of different ventures, but my biggest joy was to design some boards for some Czech skate brands. This was my big dream and it’s awesome to meet people who ride „my“ decks. This year I also had my first design in the new Horsefeathers collection which is something I was looking forward to for a while. At the same time, I cooperated on the Garand Brand products, Skaterock.cz and Sur Skate Camps. I am working on my own limited edition clothing line with designs you can‘t see anywhere else. I also had some success with my studies, because I was admitted to the painting atelier in university in Brno. You’ve been with Horsefeathers for quite a long time and you are definitely an active person. What was your journey like and what did it bring you? My HF journey began on September 10th, 2012. At that time I moved to Brno to attend university. I fulfilled my dream to work in a skate/snow environment while supporting myself. It gave me a different perspective on the Czech skate community. Thanks to the fact that there are no limits to any initiatives, I can take part in running the shop, planning events, store and brand marketing, contributing to the collection, travelling to destinations that I would never visit by myself. This fun “job” requires time and energy, but the investment is worth it.

Finally one slightly philosophical question. Where do you imagine yourself in 10 years? I don´t have any picture of myself in 10 years, but if I would still be devoted to my own creative activities, to create interesting and remarkable work in a collective of inspiring and open-minded people as much as I do right now, it won´t be bad at all. But at the same time I could have a baby or my own cooking show, who knows? :-) Thanks man! If you want, here’s space for any message you want to give. Thanks for this interview. My greetings to my whole family, to all my friends and to the HF crew, it’s an honor to work with everyone. I also wish a great winter season to everyone!!
