HELLO AND WELCOME TO THE NEW HORSEMART MAGAZINE! We are delighted to relaunch as a new quarterly equestrian magazine, with features and articles to delight and a superb selection of horses, ponies, tack and horseboxes for sale. You can pick up a copy of the magazine in all good equestrian and country stores across the South East, or have a read via our eMag which you can find at Horsemart.co.uk. With the Olympics kicking off in August, our launch issue looks at our teams and our chances of bringing home those medals! We’ve put together a guide to the three main Olympic disciplines, along with the Olympic timetable so you know what’s happening and when. It was also great to chat to international showjumper Trevor Breen ahead of The Derby, about his horses and future plans. You can read our interview and Trevor’s picks for the individual showjumping medals in our new ‘Meet the Rider’ feature. Horsemart is thrilled to be sponsoring the River Lawn at the Royal International Show at Hickstead, and also the CIC* at Firle Place International this year. Both are fantastic events for all the family (and the dog!) and really should be dates for your diary. I very much hope you enjoy this first issue- I wish you a fantastic summer, and will be joining you in support of our riders in Rio! All the best,
Ava Pannell

International Showjumper
TREVOR BREEN Trevor Breen has had a great deal of success both competing on the national and international circuit as well as sourcing, producing and selling some top class horses. We caught up with Trevor, at his base in Buckinghamshire.

I’m very lucky to have Adventure de Kannan back just for this years 2016 Equestrian.com Derby. He’s been with his owner Karen Swann since August 2015 but we made the decision to give it a go again this year. He’s only been at our yard since April 2016 so fitness has been our main aim to date, but we are feeling very positive. If it doesn’t go to plan he owes me nothing, as he’s been an unbelievable horse for me. After the Derby he will go straight back to Karen again. As for

and practicing some Derby style fences with both horses. Some people might think it’s strange we aren’t actively jumping the two horses yet, but they’re both far enough into their careers to know their jobs and I fully believe in both of them. I potentially have a younger horse who might debut this year in his first Hickstead Derby but it’s too early at this stage to know whether I will compete him in this class.
It was life changing to be honest. I’ve always been so lucky with owners and opportunities with our horses, but this win opened up so many doors for us. We had coverage from every magazine. I was featured on TV channels such as Horse and Country, SKY TV and articles within the Daily Mail, The Times and The Irish Field. It was unbelievable how it all changed for us after I cleared that final fence. I’ve been so privileged with our sponsors supporting me from day one, so this win was great coverage for us all. The win also meant that I got much more interest from investors wanting

“The showjumper in me, would still love a shot at the Olympics”
Juggling running a successful business with family life must be tricky! What’s the secret? We look at what we do as a lifestyle. Our whole life revolves around our business and horses. Myself and Caroline work together all day either producing the horses, in the office or training clients, then we spend all evening together. As you can imagine we need to have a really good relationship and good level of communication with each other wise it would not work! We are blessed

Steve Guerdat can’t be discounted as won the individual gold in London 2012 and always does well at championship events- I am not sure what he will ride though. Same is true for Jeroen Dubbledam with Zenith. Can he do all championships in a row? It is very, very possible and they are a serious combination to watch. However, in my opinion there is one clear contender; Mclain Ward and HH Azur. They’re on fire and a brilliant combination. It’s been a long time since I’ve seen a horse quite like this!
and therefore we reap the financial benefit of the job. That said, the showjumper in me would still love a shot at the Olympics. I sold my spot for Rio and my Olympic ride in December 2015 to a foreign rider and I’m delighted to see the partnership already moving up to the very top of the sport. We would love to continue to grow the investment and training side of our business, which is ridiculously busy at present with some incredibly exciting horses in our yard. I certainly am not going to say no to someone buying or helping me secure my next Olympic ride, but

By asking a horse to think on his feet like this, we help him dissolve the restrictions and stiffness that limit most riding horses. The horse then gains agility and better symmetry between both sides of his body. Especially for horses needing to undo longstanding postural habits, change can happen quickly with exercises like the Ground Pole Square. The quick adjustments of balance in this pattern mean that your horse will recruit muscles at varying rates of speed and intensity. This prevents him from plodding along with gaits that are stuck in one particular balance rut. It shakes things up a little, encouraging him to release tension in °³æ Â Ì í° â Ą ßâÓËÓí³Ì« ËÓâ ĕ ă³ÓÌ ³Ì í° °³Ì Å «æϟ

Remember that the purpose of the exercise is to teach him to reorganize himself. - Think about steering the horse with your outside leg, and about guiding his withers, rather than his head, where you want to go. - Maintain rein contact when crossing the poles. Many riders tend to push their reins away and abandon their connection with the horse. To help his topline stay rounded, keep your contact quiet and connected.
The bottom line is that this simple pattern helps the horse use his whole structure better and the ground poles help him be more accountable for balancing himself instead of relying on constant help from the rider.
1. Lay four eight-foot ground poles on the ground to make a
square box. The ends of the ground poles should be touching at each corner.
2. Begin by walking or trotting through the middle of the box, Ë Â³Ì« ³í í° Ìíâ Óª Ì ÅÓÌ« í Ĕ«òâ Óª ³«°í ϲæ %³«òâ ϳϟ

GEMMA TATTERSALL OLYMPIC SHOWJUMPING
The Sussex eventer is off to her first Olympic games
The aim in the showjumping is to finish with zero points, with a clear round. Horse and rider combinations acquire penalties for having a fence down, if the horse refuses or the rider is unseated and falls. The combinations are also penalised for time faults, with one penalty for every four seconds over the optimum time. If two or more riders finish on the same score the winners are determined in a jump-off with the fastest competitor with the least faults, winning.
First individual qualifying competition This round is a qualifier for the final of the individual competition. The results also determine the starting order for the team competition.
Team competition round one The competition runs over two rounds, with two different courses in each. The results from the two days also count as the second and third qualifying rounds for individual contention. Every horse and rider combinations take on the first course, with only the top 60 pairs going on to the second round.

The final individual jumping competition Day four sees the top individuals battle it out for the medals. This final part is made up of two rounds (A and B). Round A sees the best 35 pairs who have qualified take part with a clean score sheet. Each nation can present no more than 3 combinations to ride in this round. In the event that a nation has four riders in contention, only the best placed three from the team competition can go forward. In round B only the 20 best competitors from round A, will jump. In the event of equal placings a jump-off will commence to determine who wins a medal.
