FABRIC TECHNOLOGY Musto’s experience is unique in that we clothe round the world yachtsmen, as well as Olympians who sail, ride and shoot. What we continue to learn afloat can often be applied or adapted ashore and what we learn high on a windswept grouse moor, can also benefit riders and sailors of all levels. In the Autumn Winter collection you’ll see how the design team has identified problems and solved them through garment design and garment fabrication. In many cases fabrication involves technical solutions with man-made fibres, but you’ll also see how we’ve used modern technologies and materials and applied a new twist to the best traditional ones too. GORE-TEX® FABRIC TECHNOLOGY Widely regarded as the ultimate fabric for outer garments, it is the most durably waterproof and highly breathable material available. The bicomponent microporous GORE-TEX® membrane is used as a drop liner between the inner and outer garment layers. Stronger than standard GORE-TEX® the drop liner is engineered to withstand gun recoil, increases the garments thorn resistance, compared to many two layer fabrics and avoids the need for a stiffer noisy outer laminate. The Highlands, Loddington and Whisper Jackets all feature this technology. HOW DOES IT WORK? WATERPROOF – the structure of the GORE-TEX® fabric membrane comprises of microscopic pores 20 times smaller than a drop of water. This prevents any water droplets passing through. BREATHABLE – pores in the GORE-TEX® fabric membrane are 700 times bigger than a water vapour molecule, allowing water vapour to easily pass through the membrane, keeping you dry and comfortable. WINDPROOF – blocking any wind flow, the GORE-TEX® fabric membrane has been engineered to be durably windproof, keeping the wind out but allowing your skin to breathe. DURABLE – GORE-TEX® fabrics are designed to be durably waterproof, windproof and breathable to maintain performance, for the useful life of the product. WATERPROOF AND SHOWERPROOF BREATHABLE FABRICS Musto breathable fabrics have a hydrophilic coating. They breathe by absorbing moisture from the warm, high humidity zone around the body and chemically driving it through the clothing system.
These fabrics combine with either an abrasion resistant outer shell or lining to which the hydrophilic coating is applied. Our Breathable Waterproof products have taped seams, making them fully waterproof. This technology is utilised throughout our Tweed Collections, the Macnabs, Keepers and Westmoor Jackets. LAMINATED FLEECE A microporous membrane is used as a laminate to form a breathable and durably windproof barrier. The fabric is also waterproof, the garments themselves are showerproof and by avoiding the use of seams in high ingress areas the Windjammer Shooting Jacket and Gilet provide a good level of water protection, as well as insulation. PRINTED FABRICS The process adopted for the Macnab garments, creates the look of a woven fabric without the weight. The hardwearing Polyester tricot brushed outer achieves a ‘soft natural feel’ handle, which is printed with a high definition, traditional herringbone background to achieve the ideal camouflage required for game shooting and particularly for stalking. A waterproof, windproof and breathable fabric combines to form the laminate, which in turn is protected by a mesh lining. The brush face of this lining hangs next to the laminate to help reduce noise generated through friction. MACHINE WASHABLE TWEED All wool fibres have a series of microscopic scales which can feel coarse and when agitated through the washing process lock together resulting in a stiff and coarse handle. Fibres are damaged and garments lose their shape. Generally machine washable tweeds are created by subjecting the cloth to a consolidating chlorine gas. However, this gassing process, known as Chlor Hercosett, increases the likelihood of a coarse stiff cloth that can only be made using dull colour yarns. Musto developed a plasticising process with our Scottish Mill which coats the fibres and the scales making them smooth and flexible, rather than coarse and stiff. This consolidates the cloth – the original handle, vibrant colour and shape are maintained when washed at 30°C, providing the extra benefit of being easy care with no sacrifice to the cloth’s premium feel.
STRETCH TECHNICAL TWEED Cheviot and Worsted wools combine together with a 2% nylon filament which increases tensile strength and reduces the tweed’s capacity to absorb water. Lycra® 3% is added to provide stretch performance. The yarns undergo twisting and scoring to increase resilience and an outer Teflon® finish is applied to further reduce water absorption and staining. A breathable waterproof hydrophilic drop liner ensures full garment waterproof integrity. OUTDRY® This technology is set to revolutionize the performance and comfort of breathable footwear, which is why Musto has selected it to upgrade our country footwear. The patented lamination process bonds the waterproof and breathable membrane directly to the external layer of the boot, sealing every water entry point. This eliminates the air gap created by floating liners and the associated reverse breathability problems caused by moisture in this gap. Drying times and weight, which can increase due to water absorption are also reduced. WOOL ULTRA Socks through their construction and fabrication must help keep the feet dry, at a comfortable temperature and blister free. Research suggests that natural fibres like wool are better than their synthetic counterparts at keeping feet dry when used with waterproof footwear. Dry means a lower friction environment, morecomfort and fewer blisters. Wool Ultra twisted fibres used in the Technical Shooting Socks provides the best shock absorption by having a perpendicular orientation to the sole of the sock, the amount of force on the foot is reduced through a combination of compression and sideways displacement.
D3O® PERFORMANCE D3O® is a patented material containing intelligent molecules, it’s flexible and flows with the wearer as they move, but locks together on impact, absorbing energy and providing superior protection from a recoiling gun. D3O® outperforms conventional soft foams of the same thickness on impact by up to six times.

WASHABLE TWEED
LIGHTWEIGHT MACHINE WASHABLE TWEED Now firmly established and much acclaimed, all three styles are constructed from a premium Scottish cloth, which is even lighter than our original Stretch Tweed but retains its renowned strength, handle and vibrant colours.
01
All wool fibres have a series of microscopic barbs which can feel coarse and when agitated through the washing process lock together resulting in a stiff and rough handle. Fibres are damaged and garments loose their shape. It’s common practice to create machine washable tweeds by subjecting the cloth to a consolidating chlorine gas. However, this gassing process, known as Chlor Hercosett, increases the likelihood of a coarse stiff cloth that can only be made using dull colour yarns. Not content with this, we developed a plasticising process with our Scottish mill to coat the fibres and the barbs making them smooth and flexible, rather than coarse and stiff.

This consolidates the cloth – the original handle, vibrant colour and shape are maintained when machined washed at 30°C, providing the extra benefit of being easy care, with no sacrifice to the premium appearance of the cloth. PRINTED FABRIC TECHNOLOGY Stalking has its own demands, heavy clothing on long uphill approaches can be tiring, the weather can be constantly changing and fabrics need to blend into the surroundings. This was the challenge the Macnab suit had to overcome, it also had to satisfy the demands of game shooting too. The solution was to use printed technology to replicate woven tweed onto a light, brushed, durable polyester based shell fabric.

IAN CLINTON
Gun Dog Trainer Director of the Working Dog Company Shooting Times Gun Dog Training Contributor As a working dog handler and trainer I guess it goes without saying that I expect my team of dogs to be trustworthy, reliable and great performers out in the field. During the shooting season we are out picking up 3 or 4 times a week, some days are back to back and the conditions can be challenging due to the unpredictability of the British climate. With this thought in mind, equally important is good quality practical clothing and footwear and my expectations mirror those that I seek and expect in my team of dogs. There is a thought that always comes to mind when I hear people moaning about the weather, ‘there is no such thing as bad weather, just inappropriate clothing!’
“
I wore the Retrievers Vest last season on shoot days, on a daily basis for dog training and whilst competing. When working with my young dogs I no longer use a game bag as they tend to get in the way. Freedom of movement is just as important when working with dogs, as it is when shooting. All my training equipment fits comfortably into the vest pockets now.
BEN RANDALL
Beggarbush Gundogs, 2011 & 2012 British Cocker Championship Winner
”
Good clothing is equally important during summer months; I look for a jacket that is practical and lightweight with design features that meet my needs. In particular when out with clients and their dogs I not only like to look the part but when throwing training dummies around I need freedom for my arms and big pockets to carry my training essentials. Whilst on the move I often find carrying a training bag can be a nuisance and when keeping an inexperienced dog close at heel during training a bag can be off putting if it swings around and gets in the way, a large back pocket becomes essential to ensure I have all easily at hand without making the dog shy away. During winter months being out in the field is an all day affair and I need to be kept dry and warm, I keep my dogs in tip top working condition and I will not be able to meet my challenge and the expectations of the Keeper and Shoot owner if I become cold, wet and tired! I need my clothing to be lightweight and practical with top performance and essentially robust enough to withstand the challenge of wear and tear our countryside will throw at it. Good breathable technology is a must as overheating and getting wet from perspiration can be equally as miserable as being soaked through. In my eyes I expect the clothing designer and manufacturer to have considered my needs carefully and apply the same thought processes to provide high performance clothing, just as I do to ensure my dogs are well trained and meet my expectations and those that utilise our skills on a shoot day.

KEEPERS JACKET ULTRA DURABLE FABRIC Rough shooting, beating and keepering all require tough fabrication and construction techniques. The waterproof garments on this and the following page are constructed using drop liners rather than laminated fabrics, as they are generally less likely to be pierced by thorns and wire. All garments feature an outer shell constructed from a Polyamide / Polyester mix with a DWR finish. This combination insures high abrasion resistance, high tensile strength and a resistance to staining, without being too heavy, stiff or noisy whilst working.

PRINCE’S COUNTRYSIDE FUND - UPDATE The Nations farmers play a pivotal role in our sport of shooting, without them and their management of the land, shooting wouldn’t be possible on the scale we enjoy today. How old is the average farmer, what opportunities exit for his children to find employment, how key is food production to our economy, who maintains the 180,000 miles of dry stone walls we have. Answers to all these questions and many more can be found on www.princescountrysidefund. org.uk as well as information on how you can support sustainable initiatives championed by the Fund. Initiatives that allow farmers and rural communities to help themselves secure a brighter future.
services and 40 rural communities are being mentored to set up village shops. All the projects are essential for safeguarding the future of the countryside. Through National Countryside Week, which runs every July, the Fund aims to remind people of the value of the countryside, why it shouldn’t be taken for granted and to encourage people to think what they can do to help. The Fund is also encouraging
support their own communities, and make a real difference in rural areas.” It’s important not just to our sport of shooting that The Prince’s Countryside Fund succeeds, but it’s vital to the whole Nation. Directly or indirectly everyone benefits from strong rural communities and we can all play a part in securing their future.
TWO YEAR’S ON The Prince’s Countryside Fund celebrated its second anniversary in July 2012. Since its launch it has now given over £1.5 million to 45 successful projects across the country including The Farmer Network, which trains young people to become hill farmers in Cumbria. Thanks to grants from The Prince’s Countryside Fund, 9,000 children have been taken on farm visits by FACE or have learnt about the countryside, 50 rural pubs in Wales are being supported to take on community

groups and individuals to organise their own fundraising efforts and has launched a fundraising pack, to encourage everyone to get involved.
THE FRANK JENKINS MEMORIAL TROPHY
Victoria Harris, Director for The Prince’s Countryside Fund said, “With the Jubilee and the Olympics, 2012 is a great year of celebration for Britain. We are asking people not to forget the countryside at a time when farming and the rural economies need our help most.”
Musto and The Prince’s Countryside Fund wanted to identify and help a young gamekeeper just starting out on their career. Their expertise is just as important as that of the farmer when it comes to providing good places to shoot and the revenue this then provides for the community. Finding the right person was key, so we sought the help of the NGO, the National Gamekeepers’ Organisation.
Ambassador for the Fund and former England rugby captain, Phil Vickery commented: “As a farmer’s son from Cornwall, I know first-hand the very real issues our countryside faces. By supporting the Fund, I hope to highlight these issues, help demonstrate the good work it does and encourage more people and businesses to offer their support. HRH The Prince of Wales has a clear passion for the British Countryside and a determination to bring real change. All the projects backed by The Prince’s Countryside Fund help people
They already had the structure in place – The Frank Jenkins Memorial Trophy and we are now very pleased to be the official sponsor. Mr Jenkins had over 60 years experience as a keeper before he sadly passed away in 2010. His family wanted to keep his memory alive, so gave a very generous donation to the NGO in order to commemorate his life and work. Each college nominates their best student and the most promising is chosen to win the award, the annual trophy is presented at the Midland Game Fair.

SHOOTING PERFORMANCE Phil Coley Phil Coley MSc (Hons) leading Sports Scientist in Clay Shooting Both hot and cold weather play a significant part in decreases in performance if not addressed. In the heat, dhydration is one key component, but heat exhuation is another. In the cold, strangely enough dhydration also plays a major part and so does mental awareness. Humans can only tolerate a variation of 4ยบC in the internal body temperature until a mental or physical decrease in performance is seen. In cold weather the heart rate has to increase to remain a core temperature within the body, this leads to a constriction of blood vessels, in particular the ears, feet and hands. This not only leads to slower reaction times, but also a lessening of peripheral vision. In studies carried out in 2002 and 2011**, performance was seen to decrease by 12% in cold weather, where a temperature of 5ยบC was seen, and a decrease of 18% where an outside temperature was below freezing to -5ยบC. For performance to remain at a constant or similar the shooter needs to have the right garments of clothing, but with a breathable underlayer for the dispersing of any water vapour. An increase in fluid intake and an increase in carbohydrate rich foods. However with the right clothing, then normal training and food/fluid intake can remain the same. It is vital for an under clothing garments and an outer shell. If the garment is of a thinner design, but retaining inner core heat, then performance can be maintained. **Coley.PD 2002 Study of Clay Shooting Performance in Temperature Extremes. 2011 Follow Up Study of Bodily Reaction with Increased Heart Rate through Cold.
