BRIEF PRESENTATION AND BASIC RULES 2011 General An FEI Nations Cup™ Top League event is organised as a five-star Nations Cup, i.e. a competition in which official teams representing nations compare their merit. At each event the teams gain points according to their placing. At the end of the 2011 season the team with the highest points wins the FEI Nations Cup™ Top League and the two teams with the lowest points will be relegated to the FEI Nations Cup™ Promotional League. The first placed team of the European Promotional League series as well as the best placed team at the Promotional League Final will join the FEI Nations Cup™ Top League for the 2012 season. 8 events Each of these events has a five-star status and the minimum prize money for each Nations Cup competition is € 200,000. 8 teams of 4 riders Each participant rides the same horse throughout the competition. Teams compete in four lines (first rider for each team, then 2nd rider for each team, etc.) Two rounds in each competition The competition takes place over 2 rounds, over the same course during the same day. 1st round: The starting order is decided by an official draw. 2nd round: Unless eliminated in the 1st round, the eight Top League teams take part nd in the 2 round; starting order in reverse order of merit (best team last). The home team, if not one of the eight Top League teams, may return for the 2nd round providing its score in the 1st round does not exceed the score of the last placed Top League team by more than 8 penalties. The course There are 12 obstacles in an FEI Nations Cup™ course. Scoring The FEI Nations Cup™ is judged under table A not against the clock with a time allowed in both rounds. Table A: Each fault is penalised with or a first refusal draws a sanction of 4 1st round: Penalties of the 3 team score for the 1st round. 2nd round: Penalties of the 3 team score for the 2nd round.
a certain number of points (e.g. a pole knocked down penalties). best riders per team are added together; this is the best riders per team are added together; this is the
Team scores for the 1st and 2nd rounds are added together to establish the classification. The team with the lowest score is the winner. At the end of the 2nd round, the eight FEI Nations Cup™ Top League teams receive points for the League Standings according to the following system:
3
Placing 1st 2nd 3rd 4th 5th 6th 7th 8th
Points 10 7 6 5 4 3 2 1
In case of a tie for the 1st place, one rider is selected from each team for a jump-off against the clock. The team of the competitor with the fewest penalties – in the case of equal penalties the fastest time – wins. In case of a tie for any other place among the FEI Nations Cup™ Top League teams, these teams are placed equal and the points for the places in question are added together then divided equally among the teams concerned (fractions are rounded up to the second decimal from .005 and down from .004) Overall classification The points obtained by each team in each of the eight FEI Nations Cup™ Top League competitions are added together to establish the overall classification at the end of each season. In case of equality of points for first or sixth place in the overall classification, teams are separated by giving preference to the team with the greater number of first, second or third place classifications and so on. In case of a further tie, refer to the procedure set forth in the Rules for the FEI Nations Cup™ series. Relegation of teams At the end of each year, the 7th and 8th placed FEI Nations Cup™ Top League teams are relegated to the FEI Nations Cup™ Promotional League series, whereas the best placed team from the European Promotional League overall standings and the winner of the Promotional League Final are promoted to the FEI Nations Cup™ Top League for the coming season. FACTS AND FIGURES General 102 years of team competition - the FEI Nations Cup™ series is striding purposefully into its second century. 8 top nations - France, USA, Germany, Ireland, The Netherlands, Great Britain, Belgium and Denmark. 8 competitions at 8 world-class venues -La Baule in France, Rome in Italy, St Gallen in Switzerland, Falsterbo in Sweden, Aachen in Germany, Hickstead in Great Britain, Dublin in Ireland and Rotterdam in The Netherlands. 4 riders per team. 2 rounds of jumping - and possibly a third-round jump-off against the clock if teams are tied at the end of the second round. 2 new nations for 2011 - Denmark and Belgium - who emerged from the 2010 Promotional League. 1 title-holder - the French have been the dominant force since the Top League FEI Nations Cup™ concept was first devised in 2003 - they were crowned champions for the first two Samsung-sponsored seasons in 2003 and 2004, and again under the Meydan banner in 2009 and 2010. Leg 1 at La Baule (FRA) Course designer was Frederic Cottier (FRA). 12-fences on the course. Only one double-clear the competition at La Baule - that came from Belgium's Judy-Ann Melchior and the 9 year old grey mare As Cold as Ice Z. The Danish team retired in round two. Their second-line rider, Emilie Martinsen, withdrew before the competition began. In round one, there was one Retirement - Belgium's Jos Lansink and Cavalor Valentina - and one Elimination - World No. 1 Kevin Staut from France with Silvana de Hus. In round two there was one Elimination - Great Britain's David McPherson with Chamberlain Z - and one Retirement - World No. 1 Kevin Staut from France with Silvana de Hus. Leg 2 at Rome (ITA) The victory at Piazza di Siena on 27 May 2011 was only the second ever recorded by a Dutch team in the Rome Nations Cup. Both Eric van der Vleuten and Jeroen Dubbeldam were on the team from The Netherlands that previously won in 2004. Italy holds the record for most Nations Cup wins at CSIO Rome - 27 in total. Italy competed in the Top League series leg at Rome as host nation, but were not eligible for FEI Nations Cup™ points. 19
The oldest horse in today's competition was the 15 year old Irish-bred stallion Flexible (by Cruising), ridden by America's Rich Fellers. The youngest horses were nine year olds - Banda de Hus (Kevin Staut FRA), Amarone (Thomas Sandgaard DEN), Monte Bellini (Philipp Weishaupt GER), Tripple X (Ben Maher GBR) and As Cold as Ice Z (Judy-Ann Melchior BEL). The Belgian team included two World Champions - Philippe Le Jeune who won the title at the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games™ in Kentucky last September and Jos Lansink, winner at Aachen in 1996. Two Olympic champions were also competing today - The Netherlands' Jeroen Dubbeldam who took individual gold at Sydney 2000 and Germany's Ludger Beerbaum, individual gold medallist at Barcelona in 1992. Leg 3 at St-Gallen (SUI) This was a back-to-back win for the team from The Netherlands who also came out on top in the FEI Nations Cup™ in Rome, Italy. The winning Dutch team included father-and-son Eric and Maikel van der Vleuten who both jumped double-clear. This was only the second Top League FEI Nations Cup™ appearance for Maikel van der Vleuten. He previously rode alongside his father on the Dutch team in Rome in 2009. Mirroring the result in Rome, the last Dutch rider, Jur Vrieling, did not have to jump in the second round. This was the fourth Dutch victory in the history of the Swiss Nations Cup. The Netherlands previously came out on top in 2008, 2004 and 1999. The Swiss Nations Cup dates back to 1927. The bogey fence of the competition was the final white oxer. It fell 8 times in round 1, and 13 times in round 2. The oldest horse to compete at St-Gallen was the 18 year old stallion Argelith Stakkato ridden by Eva Bitter from Germany. Leg 5 at Aachen (GER) Course designer was Germany's Frank Rothenberger. This was only the third victory for The Netherlands in the history of the FEI Nations Cup™ at Aachen which dates back to 1929. They previously won in 1991 and 1997. The bogey fences in round one on the 12-obstacle course were the plank-fronted oxer at fence two, the double at fence nine and the fences down the final line from 10 to 12. In round two, the open water proved highly influential.
