Could you be a Horslyx Ambassador?
As a way of supporting those riders committed to their sport, manufacturers of Horslyx have developed a new Ambassador Scheme that offers six budding amateur riders the chance to become a Horslyx representative for 12 months, beginning in January 2014. Applicants should be passionate and dedicated to their sport, believe in feeding the Horslyx way, compete regularly in either unaffiliated or affiliated competitions and be very active on social media channels such as Facebook and Twitter. The Horslyx Ambassador scheme is open to riders above the age of 16 years old who are competing in any discipline. Horslyx want their new Ambassadors to hit the ground running and help spread the word about the range of products on offer and their versatile uses. Each of the six Horslyx Ambassadors will receive branded clothing and equestrian equipment, a supply of Horslyx to last the year and nutritional support whenever necessary. In addition Horslyx will promote their Ambassadors through regional press, social media and the website helping to gain valuable exposure to aspiring riders. Entries will close on 31st December 2013 and the 6 Horslyx Ambassadors will be announced by 31st January 2014. Terms and conditions apply. For more information and to apply visit www.horslyx.com

Abbey England & Stubbs Donate Display Horse to Gartmore RDA The horse, known as ‘Ashby’, will be used as part of a “Sensory Area” for children unable to manage a real horse and also as an introduction prior to riding the RDA horses and for ongoing development and learning.
Two members of the Gartmore RDA group welcome Ashby, pictured with Richard Pickering of Abbey England (left) and Chris Bradwell of Stubbs (right).
Said Peter Philips of Abbey England: “Ashby is a valuable asset to the children visiting the riding school as he can help with balance, core stability and confidence. We are delighted to supply Ashby, in conjunction with Stubbs, and hope he will make a difference to many riders over the years.”
Abbey England and Stubbs kindly donated a strengthened life size model horse to the riding for the disabled association at Gartmore Riding School, Staffordshire.
Gartmore teaches special needs school children to ride from several schools in the area, young adults from care homes and also adults with disabilities. For more information visit www.abbeyengland.com

Pony found abandoned at a bus stop is on a journey to recovery
Onlookers were astonished to see a rather unusual commuter waiting patiently at a bus stop near Bristol’s busy city centre on Monday 28th October. A small, grey Shetland pony stallion had been abandoned, tied to the bus stop on the bustling street. Now rescued by equine welfare charity, HorseWorld, the staff have named the pony Buster. ”When we arrived, the 34-inch grey pony was being tormented by children,” said HorseWorld’s Equine Husbandry Manager, Joanne Vaughan.
“We untied him, loaded him up and brought him back to our welfare department. The vet has estimated him to be about 21-years-old so he’s no spring chicken and most of his front teeth are missing. He’s not underweight but we have no idea when he last had a vaccination, wormer, hoof trim, dental check and the list goes on. He’s been tested for various diseases and has now started a program of rehabilitation that caters for all of his needs. Buster has also been castrated. With the number of horses the rescue charities are trying to squeeze in at the moment, we certainly don’t want to be bringing any more into the world!” Buster will remain at the charity’s welfare department until his rehabilitation is complete and when he is ready, HorseWorld staff hope to rehome him to a loving home as part of their loan scheme. To find out more about HorseWorld, please visit www.horseworld.org.uk
Do you know a pet hero? Pet charity Blue Cross is calling for nominations for its historic Blue Cross medal. The leading pet charity has reinstated the medal, which will be awarded in 2014, to mark 100 years since the First World War and commemorate its history of helping animals on the battlefields and recognise the varied role that pets play today. Blue Cross is looking for nominations from owners or handlers of pet who have saved or changed someone’s life, and want to celebrate their achievement by putting them forward
for this very special edition medal. Nominations could include: serving or working animals, bravery stories, life changing partnerships/assistance animals. Past winners include Major Methuen of the King's Royal Rifles in 1917 who was awarded the medal for the rescue of horses under shellfire on the battlefield in France. In 1942 it was awarded to a 19 year old cat called Jim when he saved the lives of his family by waking them up when their house caught fire. Find out more at www.bluecross.org.uk/medal

cremation service As the APPCC has previously indicated, it is advisable that you personally arrange an after death care service and ask the following questions to ensure that you get the service you are paying for: How will my horse be transported? Does the equine cremation service have its own cremator? If not, where will my horse be taken? Will my horse be the only animal in the chamber during the cremation process? How will my horse be stored?
Other fraudulent activities Purchasing a horse is an exciting, but daunting process for some first time buyers. Fraudulent sellers take advantage of vulnerable buyers, by representing prior to sale that a horse is, for example, a ‘very expensive breed’. There have also been cases where a horse was never delivered or the horse delivered did not meet the pre-sale description. In addition, some sellers use photographs obtained over the internet to advertise and sell trailers or other equipment and request that the money is paid up front. If the equipment ever arrives, it is often different and worth less compared to what was advertised. This problem has been exacerbated by the increase in international sales.
How will my horse be identified?
If you suspect that you are a victim of cremation fraud or would like advice on how to ensure that the “private cremation” service you have been promised meets your expectations, please contact Elizabeth Rhodes on 0845 404 2293 or elizabeth.rhodes@dwf.co.uk

Certain indicators, such as a rushed sale, may suggest that you are not party to a legitimate arrangement. If however, this only comes to light once you have purchased a horse or equipment that does not reflect the representations that the seller made to you, you may have a claim for fraud on the basis that the seller dishonestly made a false representation and intended to make a gain for himself or to cause a loss to you.

Everyone looks for a saddle that offers good value for money and that will stand the test of time and it is important that you recognise why
some saddles cost £1,000 while others are twice as much. The Society of Master Saddlers offer advice on what to look for in your saddle when making a new purchase and the best process to go through to ensure an exacting fit for horse and rider.

It is vital that you have a thorough consultation with your saddle fitter. This may take up to three hours but is time well spent to get the best end result. If required have your trainer and physiotherapist on hand at the same time.
2
When your saddle is ready and finished, don’t simply allow it to be sent in the post, in the hope it will fit, make sure a return visit is part of the buying and fitting process.
3
We all know that old saying ‘You get what you pay for’ and in any walk of life you have to pay for expertise. When buying a new saddle you should always get it fitted by a Society of Master Saddles Registered Qualified Saddle Fitter, as you are guaranteed they are fully qualified, professional and have a minimum of three years’ experience.

Making sure the saddle is created from the highest quality leather from around the world and the craftsmanship behind the saddle is at the top of the skill level helps to result in a superior quality product. When having your saddle made, go for a supplier who can make a saddle where all design features are interchangeable across the entire saddle to provide the highest degree of comfort and freedom for the horse and support and security for the rider. Whatever your discipline, from dressage to showjumping, cross-country to showing or leisure riding, a bespoke saddle should be designed and fitted by highly trained experts who really understand your horse’s needs. Your saddle should balance comfort, with style and performance, helping to maximise your partnership and ensuring neither horse nor rider have to compromise. Remember there is ‘leather’ and there is leather! Cheaper quality leather can have a tendency to be slippery, not great when in the saddle, and not the best policy to scrimp on quality in this instance.
Remember, saddles need to be checked regularly as the horse gains fitness or changes as it gets older.
By following the nine poin ts above and with experts on hand to c heck your saddle on a regular basis, this will ensure your investment w ill hold high value if later resold or cha nged.

Forage for the winter months with HorseHage!
42
bales up grabs! for
In this issue we have teamed up with HorseHage for this great competition to win a pallet (42 bales) of High Fibre HorseHage to keep your horse in forage over the winter months! High Fibre HorseHage is a dust-free, bagged forage made from selected ryegrasses which have been allowed to mature before harvesting to attain higher fibre, lower protein and lower energy levels. Being lower in sugar than a typical hay sample, High Fibre HorseHage carries the Hoof Kind logo to show that it is safe to feed to laminitics and good doers. It is ideal for riding club horses and ponies, native ponies, veterans and those that are resting, convalescing or laminitic. It also provides an excellent fibre source for competition horses being fed high levels of concentrates. HorseHage does not contain any chemical additives, mould inhibitors, flavourings, molasses or inoculants. It is more digestible than other forages, allowing more efficient utilisation of the available nutrients and because the nutritional content is far better quality than hay, you may be able to reduce the level of concentrates you feed. This can help reduce your overall feed bill. High Fibre HorseHage is used by our sponsored riders – Mary King, Beverley Brightman, Bert Sheffield, Lucy Wiegersma, Jeni Gilbert, Helen West, and the Bleekman sisters – as they all recognize the benefits of feeding a dust-free forage. For more information on feeding your horse or pony, please contact the HorseHage Helpline on 01803 527257 or visit www.horsehage.co.uk

What does your balancer look like? It is now a well established fact that our equines require their diet to be supplemented with vitamins, minerals and micronutrients. Specialised supplements in the form of comprehensive balancers such as Horslyx provide one of the easiest and most efficient ways of providing these essential nutrients to best meet our horse’s needs. Many people only think of a balancer as a concentrated feed substance, however a nutrient rich lick such as Horslyx can provide a simple and cost effective method of balancing and supplementing the equine diet. The lick balances the diet with the inclusion of essential vitamins, minerals and trace elements, including the unique Healthy Hooves package containing Biotin, Zinc, and Methionine. Available in four different formulations; Original, Respiratory, Mobility and Garlic, Horslyx will appeal to even the fussiest of feeders. Nutritious Horslyx is extremely palatable, providing equines with essential nutrients in an appetizing recipe. Along with optimum levels of forage, Horslyx allows your horse to slowly trickle feed the remaining nutrients required, allowing for optimum digestion and absorption. The unique composition of Horslyx is designed to be licked not chewed which slows down the rate of consumption and helps to keep your horse occupied and engaged, minimising stress and boredom levels particularly when stabled. Available in 5kg, 15kg and 80kg tubs. Prices start at £10.75.

Exertional rhabdomyolysis
(Tying up) – a complex problem Exertional rhabdomyolysis is a common problem for working horses. In the past this painful muscular condition was referred to by many names including tying-up, set fast, azoturia and monday morning disease. These old names give a clue as to the number of different signs of this disease, which share a common theme i.e. muscle pain and cramps of varying degrees. Exertional rhabdomyolysis (ER) in horses refers specifically to muscle pain associated with exercise. It may be sporadic, meaning that horses have occasional episodes or chronic i.e. repeated episodes which may put the working career of the horse in jeopardy. Sporadic forms of ER are often due to over-training resulting in muscle strain or dietary deficiencies of vitamin E or electrolytes. Otherwise viral infections such as equine herpes or influenza combined with exercise may also cause the condition. Chronic forms are due to specific inherited abnormalities such as polysaccharide storage myopathy (PSSM) in Quarter Horses, Warmbloods and Draft breeds or recurrent exertional rhabdomyolysis (RER) in Thoroughbreds, Standardbreds and Arabians. Recent work now refers to two types of repeated episodes of ER. PSSM – Polysaccharide Storage Myopathy – affects mainly quarter horses, warmbloods, draft breeds. Recurrent ER – Affects TBs in training, Arabs and standardbreds.
20 HorseScene
PSSM refers to abnormal metabolism of glycogen within the muscle, whereas in TB racehorses Recurrent ER has been linked to abnormal calcium regulation within the muscle cells. In practice though, in cases of both PSSM and Recurrent ER, a reduction in starch/sugar levels within feed and possibly increased oil are helpful in managing the problem. In some horses, there are also other important dietary/management factors which may be causing or contributing to the problem. The onset of ER is linked to factors such as sex, hormones, age, temperament, exercise levels and also lameness. The typical signs include initial stiffness of the muscles, followed by sweating, lameness behind and the muscles of the hindquarters feel hard. This may then develop further to the horse not being able to move, severe pain and increased breathing rate. In some horses, a sub-clinical problem may occur with horses simply showing poor tolerance to training and competing, with reduced stamina. Blood tests will show raised CK (creatine kinase) and AST (aspartate transaminase) levels. Increased values correspond to high levels of muscle
damage. If AST levels remain higher than normal over time, this could be as a result of previous episodes. If CK increases roughly three times higher than normal levels after a fifteen minute trotting test this is indicative of subclinical ER according to work done by S Valberg at the University of Minnesota. The typical signs include initial stiffness of the muscles, followed by sweating and lameness
Management of horses with Recurrent ER can help to reduce the incidence. On a practical level, reducing excitement for nervous types will help and perhaps adjusting routines for example feeding excitable horses first and stabling these horses in quite areas of the yard. If these horses can be turned out on a daily basis this will definitely help. If they are too excitable, the use of low doses of ACP during initial turn out may help until the horse is accustomed to going out and has calmed down. The use of horse walkers must depend upon the individual horse as some may still suffer from ER whilst on the walker. Walking out in hand and allowing horses to nibble at pasture may be preferable.
If horses can be turned out on a daily basis this will definitely help the complex problem of tying up.
In severe cases of RER, there may be electrolyte irregularities such as low sodium, calcium and chloride levels or high levels of potassium and phosphorus. These may result from excessive sweating or movement of electrolytes from damaged muscle cells, resulting in metabolic alkalosis as the horses body tries to compensate for the high blood chloride levels. ER is common in racehorses and there is an increased incidence in fillies/mares which many trainers link to oestrus, however this has not yet been scientifically correlated to any specific stage of the oestrus cycle. There is a much higher incidence of fillies to mares and females to males and horses that are nervous are more likely to suffer from the syndrome. Horses on high cereal based feeds such as coarse mixes are also more likely to suffer as are horses with low grade lameness. Horses with increased training workloads when maybe the muscle has not been sufficiently trained to work at that level is a common cause. Also overtraining may lead to a general intolerance to fast work caused by changes within the muscle fibres themselves. Genetic predisposition is also likely with ER being seen within families and work at the University of Minnesota has
shown that susceptibility to the disease may be inherited as an autosomal dominant trait. In the last 15 years, research advances have provided greater insight into this problem. Of greatest importance is that exertional rhabdomyolysis comprises several myopathies that, despite similarities in clinical presentation, differ considerably in regards to events at cellular level. In addition, new knowledge regarding effective management of horses with exertional rhabdomyolysis, particularly with regard to diet, has significantly reduced the severity of ER in many horses. The specific genetic defect for one common form of PSSM has been discovered and a DNA based test is now available. Historically ER was thought to be caused by lactic acidosis but this has now been shown not to be the case. Scientists now believe that abnormal calcium regulation within the muscle cells takes place intermittently during exercise. Studies have also shown abnormal sensitivity to potassium in horses with the problem. High intakes of forage (although not that common in racehorses) combines with excessive electrolyte supplements may lead to high potassium intakes.
Rest days should be avoided for these horses as blood tests show that CK levels increase for horses exercised after a day of rest. Again turning out would be helpful. Warm up before exercise is also beneficial. Injecting or supplementing with Vitamin E and/or Selenium has not been shown to help ER. Horses in training are fed high levels of balanced concentrates anyway and so are highly unlikely to be deficient. However other dietary changes may be helpful. Feeding lower cereal starch feeds does seem to help and the addition of oil to each feed seems to reduce the Glycaemic Response of the horses to that feed. There are several low starch, high fat feeds available for horses with RER. Alternatively, increase the forage intake and reduce cereal based concentrates whilst adding oil for extra calories and a performance level supplement to maintain important micronutrient intake. Reducing the starch intake may also help horses with excitable temperaments which are prone to the condition. Ensure salt intake is maintained by providing free choice salt licks/blocks and electrolytes should be fed when horses freely sweat after exercise. As lactic acidosis is not a cause of this disease their seems little point in feeding sodium bicarbonate and dimethyglycine. All these management tips should help to reduce the incidence of this common problem in working horses and ensure these horses are able to reach their full potential.

Investing in the future with Lifeforce Formula The breeding of a strong healthy foal starts with a healthy broodmare and stallion and a good balanced diet is the foundation on which to begin, even before the foal is conceived. The nutritional needs are different for each stage of pregnancy and excellent nutrition throughout each stage encourages growth and development before and after birth. As the foal grows in size during the 3rd trimester of gestation, the room available for food in the mare is significantly reduced, which can result in loss of body condition. Improving nutrient digestibility at this stage is important to minimize loss of condition of the mare. Newborn foals rely on their mother’s colostrum and milk for nutrients for growth, as well as establishing a healthy immune system, by ensuring the correct balance of nutrients for the mare you can maximise the quality of the colostrum and milk which in turn supports optimum growth and vitality of the foal. For working stallions the covering season can prove stressful which can have a detrimental effect on fertility
22
and reduce the rate of conception, both of which can prove time consuming and costly. Lifeforce Formula ensures breeding mares and stallions have the correct combination of nutrients that are vital for breeding a strong healthy foal. Lifeforce Formula helps improve reproductive health and allows horses to get the most from their diet. Containing all natural ingredients, Lifeforce Formula provides support for your horse’s immune function while maintaining a well balanced microflora in both the gastrointestinal tract and the caecum, this allows your horse to extract the maximum nutrients from all its feed sources. Lifeforce Formula also improves the quality of a mares’ milk which in turn promotes healthy growth in young foals and supports the reproductive system of both mares and stallions which increases the likelihood of a successful conception.
Fed as a daily supplement, Lifeforce Formula provides the building blocks to enhance the body’s own natural immune system, and should be fed at the rate of 56g per day split between two feeds. Available in a 5kg Tub which provides a 90 day supply. (RRP £90). For further information please visit www.lifeforcehorse.com or telephone 01780 764512

Joules womens Intarsia jumper, fox I love country clothing and Joules have certainly outdone themselves with this beautiful jumper. It’s a super soft knit, which is both comfortable and flattering. This jumper range features animal characters - which have charmed their way into my winter wardrobe! The jumper is easy to keep looking nice, as it is such good quality, stayed looking new and retained its shape even after machine washing. Although the jumper appears to be quite thin it has kept me warm and it doesn’t look bulky. Priced at £69.95, I’m sure anyone would love this in their Christmas stocking.

Ever since I picked my horse up 3 years ago, his rugs have not lived longer then a few days - he is definitely a rug wrecker! When I was asked to test this rug I was dubious as to whether it would live up to it’s reputation of being for a serious rug wrecker especially at the cheap price of £69.99 (I have spent twice as much as this on previous rugs, only to have to retrieve stuffing from the field later on!) Putting it on for the first time I noticed it fitted well and it hasn’t rubbed any of his hair out – something that I am quite conscious about. I put him out in the field and waited, low and behold he immediately got into a play fight with the nearest horse and I stood waiting for the telltale ripping sound – which never came! The rug is extremely sturdy, waterproof and has kept him very warm. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who has a rug wrecker and my boy who would have gone through 5 or more rugs in a month has been wearing this since the weather has turned cold. Highly recommended!

Aloeride supplement My horse is not a good doer in the winter, his feet start to crumble, he lacks any sparkle and he is also extremely fussy with what he chooses to eat. Due to lack of turn out, I do worry that his digestion is not being properly maintained. I have tried many different supplements and have never really noticed a huge difference in my horses behavior or condition, and this has caused me to become wary of what I spend my money on. However, I started using Aloeride daily and I have noticed a big difference in his condition and personality. His coat is really shiny and soft, his feet are looking healthier and have improved a lot, but more importantly - he seems to be enjoying life a lot more. No longer is he sticking his bum to the door, he whinnies at me when I arrive at the stables, he is working really well, and his muscle build up has certainly improved. I would definitely recommend trying Aloeride, as it has certainly improved my horse and I will continue to use this supplement. Priced reasonably at £55.20 for a months supply.
