By Paula Broadhurst
he condition diabetes insipidus is extremely rare in horses and can be caused by either abnormal antidiuretic hormone (ADH) production or release, resulting in the kidneys not conserving water appropriately or by a primary dysfunction of the kidneys. The main clinical sign of this condition is excessive drinking and urination and if the horse is not allowed access to water they will become rapidly severely dehydrated. Treatment of diabetes insipidus is difficult and depends on the cause as it can be congenital or develop secondary to neoplasia (cancer) or other disease. In theory, diabetes insipidus caused by inadequate ADH, could be treated with hormone supplementation but this is usually cost prohibitive. Generally the long term prognosis is usually poor especially if the condition has developed secondary to another underlying problem. Primary or type I diabetes mellitus is also rare in horses and is usually caused by a tumour or disease affecting the pancreas resulting in a reduced production of insulin. The reduced levels of insulin prevent the correct metabolism of blood sugars resulting in the body trying to derive
energy from other sources such as fat. The prognosis is again guarded due to the underlying cause and costs of treatment. In contrast, Equine Metabolic Syndrome (EMS) has some similarities to type II diabetes mellitus in people and is caused by insulin resistance leading to an inability to process blood sugars. This condition is relatively common and it can occur in horses of any age or breed however, certain ones do seem to be more susceptible, such as our native breeds. While this condition is still poorly understood it is commonly considered that high circulating levels of blood sugars is due to insulin resistance and contributes to recurrent severe episodes of laminitis despite good management. Horses often have abnormal fat distribution and can be overweight however, they can also be underweight with poor muscle development and a pot belly. An added complication is that horses and ponies can suffer concurrently from both pituitary pars intermedia dysfunction (PPID) and EMS; this is why your vet may suggest testing for both conditions at the same time. This can be done by doing specific blood tests which can be discussed with your own veterinarian. It is important to mention your concerns to the vet prior to them visiting your horse, as blood tests for EMS require the horse to be fasted for a period of time and samples
for PPID may require chilling and quick transport to the laboratory for processing or alternatively blood tests taken at intervals prior to and following a specific treatment. Laminitis is one of the most serious consequences of poorly managed EMS and insulin resistance and good diet management will significantly reduce this risk. Maintaining your horse at a correct healthy weight for its size is of utmost importance and this can be achieved by dietary management to gradually reduce the energy and non-structural carbohydrate (NSC) component of the horses’ diet. This may include restricted grazing, soaking hay, double netting hay nets to slow consumption and analysis of your hay/haylage/forage to determine the NSC and energy component (visual appearance is not a good guide to these levels). Many commercially produced diets aimed at the management of horses with EMS are also now available. Regular exercise is also a very important component of managing horses or ponies with EMS. With good care, careful management to avoid laminitis and regular exercise horses and ponies suffering from EMS can continue to have active fulfilling lives. NM

ver the years, I have been lucky to develop such a strong bond with my horses, getting to know their different personalities and building trust both on and off the ground. Once a bond is made, I believe its hard to break. You can experience knocks and strains and be pushed to the limit but that bond is always there. I am so lucky that Bob, Noah and Dave all get on and the photographs of us all together show the unity we have. Bob is the king, the
leader but at the same time soft and gentle, loving and often affectionate. He allows peace and tranquility, to jump a board, go hacking and let the world pass me by, losing track of time. Noah and Dave however, provide excitement, speed, the unknown on occasion! All three of them offering me their trust, which is so important. I have often taken this for granted, Noah being a prime example. Our bond was pushed to the limit just two years ago and took time to build back up, luckily now being stronger than ever. I recently had a wonderful photo shoot at home with them all, spending the morning shooting around the yard and land. Emma Hughes, of Horse Photographer UK Surrey made me feel totally at ease and had great ideas in order to capture the true bond between my horses and I. These are just a few of my favourite photo’s, capturing love I have for them. NM

is to encourage and enable top calibre riders to reach Grand Prix level in show jumping. Greg (30) is yard manager for International showjumper Shane Breen, based with Breen Equestrian Ltd at Hickstead Showground. There, Greg oversees the care management of the forty plus competition horses together with stud horses and youngstock. Working with Breen Equestrian has provided him with invaluable opportunities to expand his experience. As well as being yard manager, he has been given the opportunity to compete internationally in age classes with young horses. He attributes his increasing successes to the opportunities he has been given by Shane and Chloe Breen at their top class yard at Hickstead. Says Greg, “I really appreciate the opportunities I have been given here, which have led to me winning many
the world on the Global Champions tour. There he had the opportunity to compete internationally in age classes with young horses. One of those horses later went on to compete at the highest of level and was actually at this year’s European Championships this summer. After Germany he worked for the famous Old Lodge Stud for Saudi Arabia’s Adnan Al-Baitony, looking after his horses and competing with his young horses. The Step Up To Gold programme, for which he has been selected, is for established riders aged twenty – thirty five years looking to make the move to 1.40m level plus in the Gold league. Hundreds of eligible riders applied for the scheme, but only a few dozen made it through to the regional trial days, where Greg’s talents were recognised and he was one of the few selected – a distinctive achievement.

Lead coach Matt Lanni said: “It is aimed at riders wanting to become competitive at 1.40m level classes. We select just eight riders from across the country that we feel have the ability and commitment to make this step”. El Thuder is one of Greg’s key rides. Greg has established an impressive winning partnership with this striking 11-year-old stallion, originally produced by Brendon Stud. Greg started riding El-Thuder this May and they instantly clicked and formed an excellent partnership. This year they have won Open classes and contested 1.30/1.35m at local venues at Felbridge, Coombelands and Hickstead. Greg is now hoping to move up to competing at 1.40m level with the help of this programme. Ideally Greg would like to run another horse (jumping at 1.20m) alongside El-Thuder and can offer owners the opportunity to promote and develop the horse through his training on the programme. Anyone interested should contact him on greglegear@gmail.com Greg has high praise for El Thuder, who combines top class competition with stallion work through artificial insemination, saying: “He is a top class horse with an excellent temperament and pedigree and is producing some very exciting youngstock who are out competing and winning classes at 1.30m level and most of them are 6 years old, he really stamps his progeny”. El-Thuder, also known as Amarillo, is a Grade A silver disc stallion and

Amarillo is by By Thunder van de Zuuthoeve, in turn by the legendary sire Argentinus. Amarillo will be standing at stud again in Surrey for 2016 and also offering frozen semen. For more details about him contact Melissa Wood on 07515481431. Caroline Copland
<PM RWa WN 8ZWL]KQVO F got her very own first pony called Solo, an Arab x New Forest x thoroughbred, grey, who was very safe and stayed with her until his death. She followed on with Warrior and Digby. Digby was her first BSJ jumping pony obtained locally from Tessa Talbot and took her to many shows as a great confidence giver. At this time Caroline was offered
to riding. In Fiji, the only horses available to ride were ex Arab racehorses which Caroline rode bareback until sitting in the saddle at the age of five. This gave Caroline the edge when moving on to Bahrain where the same horses were available plus a few older show jumping imports that were put into the riding schools. At aged nine, Caroline and the family moved to the UK and she stopped riding for a while. She missed her riding so much and was also a victim of bullying at school, so again her mother stepped in and to cheer Caroline up she suggested she once more take up riding. She was offered her first loan horse; a 13.2hh chestnut mare named Hope. Hope was one very naughty pony but she could jump, enabling Caroline to get onto the school team at Warden Park in Cuckfield. Caroline
other rides, qualifying at Nationals, however she never qualified for HOYS and to this day, this is something that spurs her on – her burning ambition. Caroline always preferred jumping horses rather than ponies and therefore got into this probably a year earlier than most. Around this time Caroline looked about for a good jumping horse and found Sophie, who she acquired from Andy Austin. Sophie had the most amazing jump and was stunning to look at; she was also a live wire. Caroline first saw her in a wash bay where she was continually pawing and throwing herself off the walls. Caroline’s Mum was petrified as Sophie stood at 16.3hh at four years old; not first horse material for your daughter. Sophie is a Belgian warmblood x thoroughbred and moved and rode

rom her early sunshine fuelled, carefree roots growing up in Fiji, Caroline Copland has now arrived at a point in her life a million miles away. It was in Fiji that her older brother and sister were addicted to Scuba diving, but being so young Caroline was not able to indulge in this practice; so her mother introduced her

Caroline Copland so well you would believe you were floating. To this day, she is the only mare that Caroline has enjoyed riding and is now the foundation mare for Caroline’s breeding programme. After purchasing Sophie, Caroline went to a clinic run by Geoff Billington, on how to look after and produce the young horse and how to take things step by step. Caroline recalls “it was a fascinating clinic. In the horse world, it can be very serious and even aggressive, but Geoff made it fun. Even the mistakes were treated with humour

and solutions were given to fix them. I realised that International riders make mistakes too and this is something that I have taken from that clinic that gives me confidence to carry on.” After the clinic it was felt that Caroline needed a more experienced horse to take her career further and hence Toby a 9 year-old bay, jumping 1.20 – 1.30 from Wigan came into the fold. Although over budget, he taught her how to sit and learn, he was consistent and gentle, a real ‘steady Eddy’. Together they Jumped at competitions such as Hickstead and Merrist Wood where they would usually be placed. Once he had taught Caroline as much as he could, he was sold on to a film director and has subsequently featured in many movies and TV shows. By this time Sophie had been put into foal, following an accident on a ramp which put an end to her jumping career. Her first foal was from Unbelievable Darco and under the direction of Shirley Light, her offspring Darco Scarlet Lady was born. Caroline recalls, “Shirley was fantastic and fully understood that this was my first foray into the world of producing.” Not having anything to ride of her own, Caroline now acquired a 2 year-old from Mandy and Brian Dye –her now AES Studbook Approved, Grand Prix Stallion, Valencio. By Corland out of a Calvados mare, Golden Rose. Caroline has recently been
,MKMUJMZ NagMag [ 11
Caroline Copland contacted by an American breeder and told that Valencio’s bloodlines can be traced through his grandsire Mytens XXX to the stallion Bold Ruler; sire to probably the most famous racehorse in America -Secretariat which has made him a rather rare and popular Stallion. Whilst Caroline was injured, Shane Breen took the ride on Valencio jumping him in higher level international classes and a six bar challenge up to 1.90m Now on her way to producing many horses, Caroline loves her life and is currently training with Brian Cassidy in Bolney. She has the support of her mum , Daniel May who grooms and rides with her and more recently Claire and Paul Jordan who have recently offered her some sponsorship and whose daughters Macey and Poppy , two talented younger riders Caroline is now teaching. She may miss the glamour and the glitz that could have come her way if she had indulged in Scuba diving rather than horses, but who would swop the company of the horses for a tank of air being strapped to your back! She can get just as wet standing in a muddy field. On a serious note, she is a great believer in training people to treat horses as animals and not as humans. She says “They need to be understood as horses and this is something I try to teach to any of the children and their parents that come for lessons. Once this is understood then it is easier to teach them to ride and jump and to stay calm around the horses.” What Caroline draws from producing her own horses, is a total understanding of the animal. It is all about the complete personality and this is something she can pass on to those wishing to buy from her – it is not necessarily down to the money but to the actual being of the horse and it’s welfare. On the riding side, she is hopefully off to Spain in February for The Atlantic Tour with six weeks of competitive jumping in eight arenas and then maybe off to Germany and Holland later in the year. Look out for more offspring from Valencio in the very near future and good luck to Caroline and her family for taking the care to produce horses of good character and stamina. NM

orse riding across the Namibian desert to the dramatic skeleton coast is certainly an experience you will never forget. To be within something so vast, and to have that much space and nothingness around you, is a feeling we rarely get in today’s world. And to be there on a horse? This safari is for riders and horse lovers, for there is no greater feeling for a rider than miles and miles of wide-open space and perfect terrain to gallop across. Our journey was to cross the arid, remote, and incredibly scenic Southern Namib Desert and dunes to the coastal town of Luderitz. Namibia Horse Safari Company had been the first to pioneer this route a year before, and much of our 360 km ride towards the Skeleton Coast would be unchartered territory. The excitement and enormity of what we were embarking on escalated on day four as our eyes panned around finding nothing but miles and miles of hot red sand

dunes. Spirits were high and our saddlebags were stuffed with biltong, a camera and four litres of water each, we set off chatting and laughing as we had done every day since we met our fellow adventurers in Namibia’s capital city Windhoek four days earlier. Water, and water sources, is a daily consideration when planning a trip like this, and it dictated many of our lunch stops and the route. The operations team allocates a hundred and twenty litres per day for horse and rider. Just one gulp of a horse is roughly a litre so, with ten horses, each break for water can see over three hundred litres consumed. Reservoirs and old farmhouses with boreholes provide a welcome opportunity en route to re-fill our tanks and even have a swim. Namibia Horse Safari have been in successful operation for over twenty years and run ten rides per year, one of which is an exploratory ride to pioneer new routes. The rides can be challenging and most of the camps are

The thrill seeking, soul searching, intrepid explorer, and just pure horse lover will all get their fix from riding with Namibia Horse Safari Company. And some rides are open to intermediate riders as well as advanced. Incredibly riders on these safaris are not spared their creature comforts. To the wonderment of the guests, Andrew Gillies and his fun loving team mix drinks and serve delectable cuisine. How we were drinking our gin & tonics with ice and lime, and being served hot lunches, and three course dinners from a campfire and a potjie pot was to be marvelled at. Sleeping under the stars takes on a whole new meaning when you’re engulfed in five hundred thread Egyptian cotton bed linen! The horses were also a joy; each one kind natured and incredibly fit. We were delighted that even after a six kilometre gallop they made us feel light as a feather as they walked out with as much energy and spirit as they had started the trip with. So we crossed the desert, and with every step we shed another worry, another social conform, and unnecessary hold on the things we previously felt important. We covered unbelievable distances each day, and the terrain changed hourly. Mountains became dunes, dunes became riverbeds, and reds blended in to yellows, pinks, blues and greens. Arriving at Lisbon airport we were met by two cars to take us to the area where we would be riding; staying in a beautiful home; Quinta dos Pinheiros that was all ours with lots of bathrooms and bedrooms to choose from with a wonderful swimming pool. We also had breakfast brought to us each morning during the holiday. Then we were taken to the stables that are owned and run by Kristin Dolke and her husband Pedro. Pedro is a teacher in horsemanship and works with the fabulously noble Lusitano horses that we were to ride. Kristin is also a passionate horsewoman with a particular love of Iberian horses and a certified trail guide. Our horses were beautiful and we got to know them on that first day
a ranch in a beautiful villa in a local village.
short ride before going on the long trail rides for the next few days. The trail rides went through the garden of Lisbon with sunflowers, tomatoes and peppers growing all around us. Stopping for wonderful lunches – once by a river complete with tables and chairs set up for us, wine and all we could eat, other times at a wine estate and various traditional restaurants all around the area. We also stayed overnight on the trail at
On our last day we had a fantastic beach ride, cantering with the sea breeze in our hair along the sands. Wonderful. I cannot recommend this set up enough, we all had a wonderful few days with great horses and superb staff to look after us every day. Kristin the owner who took us out every day was such a good guide and host to us helping with whatever we needed. The horses were incredibly well trained and kind, a testament to the love and dedication that is put into making the experience as enjoyable as possible. I nearly came home with a sweet little puppy called Conrad having just been born at the stables. NM

Abigail’s Story
) ;MKWVL +PIVKM WORDS : Paris-Maria Johnson IMAGES : Paris-Maria Johnson, LRG Photography and Simply Event Photos
)
bigail Ellis is a young animal enthusiast based in West Sussex. Recently she
received exciting news she could not believe. Four years ago for her twelfth birthday, Abigail was given something most young girls dream of, the gift of having her own pony. ‘Gem’ a 13 year-old Welsh B liver chestnut rescue pony who only stands at 12.2hh, but has a bold personality big enough to make up for the lack of height.
18 [ NagMag ,MKMUJMZ
Abigail and Gem spent all their time bonding and gaining valuable experience together. However it
the worry of Abigail being too tall. Deciding to do In-Hand Showing sparked a whole new lease of life
wasn’t long before Abigail’s mother Theresa began to realise that her daughter was outgrowing her four-legged companion. Like the dilemma a lot of parents have, Abigail cannot bare to part with Gem, she just loves her too much. With this in mind, they both agreed that they should give In-Hand Showing a try, as this way they could continue to grow together without
within the pair and they began to rack up a number of successes to their name. These include reserve champion and champion at their local riding club A.D.R.C. Also, first places at Goring and District Riding Club and Crofton Manor to name a few, and their biggest achievement to date; competing at the ever so prestigious Hickstead Showground and coming fifth out of fourteen in the Top Turnout Class. The whole family could no be more proud of them both. In October 2015 Abigail and Gem were given a sponsorship from a local company ‘Halo ARC’ Ltd who are always proud to support local people and their achievements. This was a huge moment for the pair who are incredibly grateful for this opportunity. This has made them even more inspired to achieve and show how an RSPCA pony can be given a second chance.
.WZ )L^MZ\Q[QVO 7XXWZ\]VQ\QM[ ^Q[Q\ www.NagMagMagazine.com
Abigail’s Story In the future Abigail would like to take Gem to the Royal Winsor Horse show to do the Veteran class, as Gem is now seventeen years old. However, this would have to wait a year as Abigail is in the middle of sitting her GCSE exams. Abigail has already been offered a place at Brinsbury College to do Animal Management. Her dream job would be to become an RSPCA Inspector and help other animals just like Gem and give them the life they deserve. Abigail’s mother says ‘I hope that this can inspire other parents to see that in-hand showing can be a brilliant way forward for their children and ponies to continue their friendship together especially if they won’t part with them.’ Abigail also enjoys being involved with miniature horses owned by her aunt Angela Kemp who drew Abigail into the world of horses when she was just four years old. Now fifteen years old, Abigail is progressing with her riding under the tuition of her instructor Clare Voller on a horse called Fi owned by Tars Farm Equestrian. However Abigail says Gem will always be her very special pony. NM

Lou Lou the Diabetic horse Jasmine Mortazavi runs a cafe and cares for a diabetic horse
Caring For Lou Lou WORDS and IMAGES : David Wilkins
J
asmine Mortazavi, of Hillview Road, Woodingdean, spends her days running the Delibean Cafe 80 London Road, Brighton with her partner Ben, and at the same time caring for Lou Lou, her diabetic horse. Miss Mortazavi said: “My dad bought her for me five years ago. We don’t know what breed she is, but the vet suspects she’s a cob x Connemara.” A year and a half ago, Lou Lou’s life took a dramatic turn. Miss Mortazavi said: “I thought she’d been kicked in the field. Her legs and body had swollen up like a balloon! The vet came round and ran lots of different tests.” Lou Lou had Laminitis, a swelling of the hooves, but blood tests also showed Equine Metabolic Syndrome, (EMS) type 2 diabetes in horses (see page 4). Miss Mortazavi said: “I had to give her the same tablets humans take. She
was on 15 in the morning and 15 in the evening.” “Lou Lou would kick the bucket around, or she’d eat the food and leave the tablets. We tried crushing them, shaping them and, in the end, she just gave up and ate them,” she said. To recover from EMS meant a ten month confinement in her stable while her sugar levels went down and the Laminitis cleared up. Miss Mortazavi said: “Lou Lou hated it. She’d kick the door, and move her bottom jaw backwards and forwards, it’s her angry face. If I took her into the yard, she’d drag me around, trying to find some grass.” “She was still really stiff, and we found she had arthritis in her back legs. She was on a drip for a while and had two injections in her hocks,” she said. “If a horse has arthritis it needs to move around, and she wasn’t allowed out, it was a real catch 22.” Lou Lou had the all-clear this year, but remains on a strict routine. Miss Mortazavi said: “I let her out at nine in the morning, and a friend gets her in at eleven. Then I let her out for a hour at four. It’s a backwards and forwards job and it’s about the third of a time a horse spends outside.” “Her hay is soaked to take all the sugar out of it, and we give her Malasase – sugar free horse feed. If she goes out she wears a muzzle, she’s not impressed but it’s for her own good.” On the diet for a year, Lou Lou is beginning to accept life as a diabetic horse. Miss Mortazavi said: ”She used to be quite a maresh Mare. but she’s calmed down now, and she knows she’s in a routine and what she’s doing.” Ben and Jasmine also own another horse, named Breeze, who is a healthy and happy horse.
