When and why we use a poultice

T

By Paula Broadhurst

raditionally a poultice was a soft moist mass, placed between pieces of thin material, (like linen or muslin) and applied to an area to create a hot pack with the aim to sooth pain or draw infection. Most commonly with horses, bran was used as this was readily available in the stable yard. Now we mostly use pre prepared, commercially produced poultices, impregnated with substances that have a drawing action and these can be applied hot, cold or dry. Other substances that can be used as a poultice to draw infection are epson salts or sugardine – a mix of sugar and iodone. Poultices can be used in a variety of ways in the management of horse wounds and injuries. The

most common use is probably for the treatment of foot abscesses where the dressing is applied to draw the pus out of the foot. Sometimes if the area of infection is deep in the hoof, the poultice can be used to soften the sole and draw the pus closer to the surface to enable it to then be pared to drain. Once the abscess is open, the poultice can continue to be used to draw the infection out and also keep the area clean. Poultices can also be used on wounds; usually only initially for the first day or so to draw out infection. Dirty open lacerations could be poulticed to try and draw the contamination to the surface before changing to a more appropriate

can become trapped inside). However, this type of wet dressing should not be used for too long as it can start to delay healing and promote the proliferation of skin bacteria. Sometimes an abscess can develop under the skin with no apparent cause, this might be because the infection has come from a prickle, thorn or puncture wound that has healed over, resulting in the trapped bacteria developing into an abscess some time later. In these cases, a poultice can be useful to soften the skin and draw the pus to encourage the abscess to burst or make it easier to lance. Used appropriately, poultices are a very useful component of our horse first aid kit. If you are unsure if a poultice is appropriate to be used in a particular situation with your horse then you should discuss the situation with your own vet. NM

ongoing wound dressing for healing. Puncture wounds are often poulticed to draw deeper infection to the surface, the wet dressing also keeps the small surface wound open (if it dries and closes up, bacteria and contamination

Quadrille ❘ By Rachael Hollely – BRC Competitions Manager

Bring on the Dancing Horses

D

o you love Dressage to Music? Do you enjoy being part of a team? Why not have a go at putting together a Quadrille. British Riding Clubs host a selection trial in October and the top four teams head to Olympia to battle it out to become Quadrille Champions of the Year. A Quadrille is for teams of four horses and

riders; they put together a themed display set to music and perform in costume. The display should demonstrate excellent horsemanship but doesn’t necessarily have to be based on dressage movements. It is also important to remember that it is a performance; the audience want lively music and an exciting routine.

By Rachael Hollely – BRC Competitions Manager ❘

TOP TIPS

Quadrille

1 2 3 4 5 6

You will need four riders for the performance, but should also rehearse with two reserves in case a horse or rider is unable to perform.

7

You will need to design costumes for humans and horses. Remember the riders and horses have to perform movements in them so they must be comfortable and above all safe. Pay particular attention to bandages, making sure they are safe and secure. Hard hats must be worn at all times when mounted and must be incorporated into the theme.

8

Get your horses used to hearing music as you ride, though not the music you intend to use for the performance. If you introduce your horse to the routine too early, it will begin to anticipate the next movement, which could spoil the performance.

One reserve should be able to perform with their own horse, while the other needs to be able to ride any of the horses if required. At least one member of your team must be a British Dressage Music member.

Next think of a theme; some themes may have been done before, but you may be able to bring a fresh new approach. Look for music that will tie in with the theme, suit your horses and be easily recognised by the audience. Now you can choreograph your performance. It will need to last no longer than five minutes and may include 60 seconds of entrance and exit music. Tests will be performed in a 20m x 60m arena and must be designed on the basis that the entrance is to be made at A. It can be helpful to have someone watch your performance to offer constructive criticism. You could even video your performance to see it from the audience’s perspective.

9 10 11

You will provide a more interesting performance if you act. Don’t worry about feeling silly; it’s all part of the performance. Props can be carried, but make sure you can ride effectively while carrying them. They should enhance your performance not distract the audience.

Saddlery must be in excellent order. It does not have to be new but should be clean, supple, buckles polished and authentic to the main theme. For example, circus theme could have coloured tack, a military theme could have traditional brown leather. Above all, all tack should be correctly fitted to the horse.

12

In general the display is normally the most successful when kept simple – in the past we have had some very ambitious routines that have not always worked. If a Quadrille risks advanced movements and an intricate programme then it must be perfect to avoid being untidy. Some exciting fast work is also useful to catch the judges’ eye.

13

You must include a script of up to 100 words describing your performance as part of your application. This will appear in the programme and be given to the officials for reference.

The Quadrille Teams And “Themes” Are Announced For Olympia, The London International Horse Show 2014 The organisers of Olympia, The London International Horse Show, have announced the four teams who will compete in the SEIB/ British Riding Clubs Quadrille of the Year competition in the Capital on Sunday 21 December 2014. Last year, the 2013 Quadrille winners at Olympia were the Saffron Walden & District Riding Club, who stunned the crowd with an accomplished and original performance that even included acrobatics. This year, the club is looking to attain yet another victory with their new “Seven Dwarfs” theme. Yet their endeavours for a

repeat first in 2014 will be vigorously challenged by the three other teams that have qualified for the event. The Witheridge Riding Club are looking to bring some magic to their ride, with a “Witheridge Wonderful Wizards” theme. Whilst Keysoe Riding Club hope to surprise spectators with a “Full Monty” inspired performance. Finally, West Oxfordshire Riding Club’s “Red Arrows Equine Display Team” will attempt to reinvent some of the daring moves so synonymous

with their airborne counterparts, but in equestrian form. The teams’ announcement of their planned 2014 themes certainly testify to the hours of planning that go into the competition and to the amazing spectacle of the Quadrille competition that is coming to Olympia this Christmas. It will undoubtedly be an event that appeals to those wanting a fun, family-friendly day out. NM

There are many different aspects of safety when it comes to a riding holiday, from safe riding, financial safety and general personal safety. NagMag spoke to Olwen Law from In The Saddle to bring you tips and advice on choosing the safest option when it comes to equestrian travel. PROTECTING YOUR PENNIES Whether you spend £500 or £5,000 on a riding holiday, you want to feel safe in the knowledge that your hard earned money is being put in reliable hands. For total peace of mind, always book your holiday through a bonded travel company, the best known bond is through ABTA which gives you protection for the land arrangements, i.e. accommodation, activities and meals. You may have also seen the term ATOL protected. This means that the entire holiday, including flights, is protected providing you have bought the package from the same company. If you choose to book your flights and accommodation separately you could run into problems if the airline decided to cancel or change your flights. Many low cost airlines will come up slightly cheaper than flights through a travel company, however consider whether you would like the extra protection and safe knowledge that you will not be out of pocket should changes arise before making a decision to book separately. SITUATIONS OUT OF YOUR HANDS Some of the most spectacular holidays can often be in

unknown destinations and this can cause some concerns over personal safety. In The Saddle always follow the advice of the Foreign & Commonwealth Office (www.fco. gov.uk) who issue travel advice by country and identify countries they advise you avoid. If you have already booked a trip and the FCO advise against travel, your travel company should offer you a suitable alternative trip, the option for rebooking at a later date or if necessary a full refund. If you are already in a country and an issue arises whereby British nationals are advised to leave, your tour operator should work to assist in helping you leave the country safely. Unfortunately travel insurance does not usually cover you for some instances, such as natural disasters or political conflicts, however if you choose a fully bonded company they will work to provide a solution. SAFETY IN THE SADDLE Before you embark on your riding holiday ensure that you are booked onto a ride that suits your experience level. Between you and your travel company you should be able to decide which trip matches your riding skills and your

Equestrian Travel Safety ❘ From In The Saddle expectations. This is vital for your safety and enjoyment and the team at In The Saddle are well versed in picking the perfect trip for each traveller – this is just one of the many reasons why it is beneficial to book with a specialist equestrian travel company. Your travel company will issue you with a packing list before you travel and this will be tailored to your chosen destination. Of utmost importance are a fully certified helmet or riding hat and correct footwear with a stirrup friendly design. In addition some riders may like to wear a body protector or an air vest for additional protection. We always advise wearing jodhpurs or breeches rather than jeans for comfort levels and depending on the climate, suitable upper body wear with long sleeves if possible. COMMON SENSE Just as they are at home, horses can be unpredictable. Take a common sense approach. If you are not happy with the horse you have been given then always speak up. Make sure you are fit enough to stay safe and balanced in the saddle – when you get tired and lose strength and concentration there is a greater chance of a tumble. Keep your distance from other horses, don’t move off until all the riders are mounted and never go ahead of the guide. Follow these basic steps and you will stand a greater chance of staying safe in the saddle on your travels! NM

❘ Finding the right saddle

The latest innovation to take over the saddle industry

One Size Fits All – Really?

S

addlery – a word that strikes controversy amongst equestrians. With so many styles, brands and Master Saddlers from which to choose, it’s no wonder making the final decision is becoming increasingly difficult. At the same time, horse owners are well aware that an ill-fitting saddle can lead to all kinds of problems that affect welfare and performance – in fact, lameness and musculoskeletal injuries could end a horse’s career. So what if finding the right saddle could become much more straightforward? Simple and without problems? Does one size really fit all? Stuart Attwood, equine lecturer and fellow horse fanatic, speaks out about the discovery of ‘Total Contact’. Stuart’s background has not always been based around equines - he spent several years working as a regional manager for a popular travel company before utilising his vast equestrian knowledge to make a career in lecturing. After lecturing at three land-based colleges, Stuart decided it was time to take the next step and he is promoting and expanding a business that benefits horses, ponies, owners and riders and the equine industry as a whole. Whilst on holiday ten years’ ago near Rome, Stuart met Mario Prisco, an elite Italian showjumper. Together they developed a unique idea that revolutionised the traditional English saddle; a design that had been stripped of all the ‘pieces’ that had no purpose. Seeing further potential,

addition, Stuart developed a second saddle with longer girth straps to accommodate dressage girths. Faced with sceptics, Stuart stressed the importance of equine welfare and – as people opened their minds - the benefits became clear. When under saddle the rider is fundamentally bareback with the aid of stirrups. This allows the rider to feel the horse – and essentially, the horse can feel the rider – a surreal experience. With this enhanced rapport horse and rider are able to work together and develop a deeper understanding of how each other operates. Not only does the improved seat contact take pressure off the horse’s mouth, it helps to build a top line so many owners struggle to maintain. Stuart’s clients have reported that, within fifteen minutes of riding in the Total Contact saddle, their horse ‘is more responsive’, ‘is more relaxed’ and ‘moves easier through the shoulders and back’. As one size fits all, the worry of common saddlerelated injuries vanishes leaving more time for the owner to enjoy the horse and discover the feeling of working in synchronicity. Whether a recreational rider, competing in a specific discipline or liking to take part in ‘a bit of everything’, the Total Contact saddle can provide the answer for which the rider is looking. Furthermore, it has achieved approval from many top equestrian-related organisations - and many, many clients are adamant that they would ‘never go back

Stuart brought the idea back to England and began developing it to suit the United Kingdom’s demanding market. He adapted the panels to make them longer, added padding and included an open stirrup hook. In

to using an ordinary saddle’! Stuart has set out to encourage the equestrian industry to take a new approach to saddlery and it doesn’t stop there. He plans to expand his business by introducing new beneficial products and services to include; health herbs and planting and establishing ‘Paddock Paradise’/track systems to further aid horse welfare and health…so, watch this space!

Maple Leaf Carriages and Harveys Brewery

Maple Leaf Carriages and Harveys Brewery

To be asked to travel with the Dray delivering Harveys superb beer in Lewes was a no brainer to an ex publican and now Editor for NagMag; an ultimate dream come true

brewers in the country, established since 1790 and steeped in tradition, it is no wonder that they have brought themselves into the 21st Century by reinventing their original delivery methods adopted by John Harvey from the 18th Century. On October 31st 2013, Her Majesty The Queen and HRH Prince Philip visited Harveys Brewery who have been brewing Elizabethan Ale since the Coronation in 1953. This seemed an appropriate time to introduce a newly purchased Barrel dray and to link in with Adie Matthews of Maple Leaf Carriages in order to parade the casks decorated with ‘God Save The Queen’ and ‘Elizabethan Ale’ around the town. Hence the start of a now established relationship between Harveys Brewery and Maple Leaf Carriages was born. Harveys Brewery has survived by utilising its precious tradition with innovation. At the turn of the 20th century Harveys was almost on its knees. The Public Houses needed repair and other brewers had grown to vast proportions in comparison. It was however the very lack of expansion that eventually led to Harveys Brewery survival and success as other brewery giants were swallowed up by larger corporations, the company slipped under the radar. Now under the guidance of Chairman, Hamish Elder, a seventh

generation Harvey and Joint Managing Director and Head Brewer Miles Jenner the company is poised to reach into their past and educate the taste buds and new followers of the emerging ‘real ale’ market while at the same time paying tribute to their loyal, traditional ale drinkers. As Area Manager Simon Yates pointed out “As a Company we maintain a good green footprint. We use local hops from Sussex and Kent and the spent hops are returned to local farms to use as mulch fertiliser and spent grains as cattle feed, thereby helping to promote the local milk industry. All casks and bottles are returned to the brewery for washing and re-use, also up to 80 per cent of our delivery is confined to within 50 miles of the brewery.” NagMag met up with Adie Matthews owner of Maple Leaf Carriage Company and his Groom, Jade Wylie on a grey Autumn morning at the brewery. How better to turn a grey start into a spectacular morning than by meeting the very lovely Shire horses Winston and Monty and the star of the show ‘Barney’ the dog. My home for the next few hours was to be on board the Barrel dray alongside Jade, driver for the day and Adie, the

hardworking drayman. My job was just to stand there and enjoy, which I found incredibly easy to do. At this stage, I must congratulate Jade on a fantastic job of driving. Jade has only been driving since June this year and although the horses are totally on the ball concerning their job, it is still no easy task to take them into crowded streets and confined spaces. After the aforesaid Royal visit, Harveys Brewery realised that the people of Lewes just loved to see the Barrel dray delivery beer to their local hostels and consequently after speaking with Adie from Maple Leaf Carriages an arrangement was made to offer this spectacle on a weekly basis which later extended to appearances in Brighton at special events and promotions. Just this month saw the folk band ‘Bellowhead’ take position on the Barrel dray with their fiddles to

promote their collaboration with Harveys Brewery to promote their own brand of beer. Maple Leaf Carriages is a family run business based in East Sussex with a lifetime of experience in working with horses. Both Monty and Winston are pure bred registered Shires and are half brothers. Monty suffered a sad start in life as his Mum became poorly after his birth which resulted in him being bottle fed for the first four months of his life, although this probably accounts for his friendly and sociable nature. Both stand at 18.1hh, weigh in at 1 tonne each and aged five years have still room for plenty of growth. Winston was named after a highly respected heavy horse man, and dear friend of Adie’s, Winston Curtis, who passed away the year Winston was born and Monty was named by Adie’s son Joe. They are registered as Mapleleaf Winstons Passion and Mapleleaf Montgomerys Mark. The lovely dog ‘Barney’ is a six year old rescue dog who wears his Harveys coat with pride while parading on the dray and enjoying the undisputed attention.  Barney wearing his Harveys coat

CPS dismisses charges against Devon & Somerset Staghounds following case brought by Foster & Griffin Solicitors Following an 11-month court case, the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) has dismissed charges against three members of the Devon & Somerset Staghounds who were accused of breaching The Hunting Act 2004 following a covert surveillance operation conducted by the League Against Cruel Sports, due to lack of evidence. Specialist agricultural solicitors Foster & Griffin represented huntsman Donald Summersgill and joint masters David Greenwood and Rupert Andrews at Taunton Magistrates Court arguing that the cases fell within the exemptions in the law, where hunting can take place for research and observation purposes, as the Devon & Somerset Staghounds had been providing research to a long-term project into deer health on Exmoor. Partner Jamie Foster commented: “This case highlights the extraordinary waste of court time and resources that are always involved in hunting cases. These cases take up multiple days of court time, due to the extensive use of covert footage filmed by ‘monitors’ who often trespass on private land to obtain the material. There will doubtless be anti hunting campaigners who suggest there was an ulterior motive for the CPS dropping the case. This simply isn’t true. It was a hopeless case brought on the evidence

going. Now under the name of Maple Leaf Carriages, he imports Roberts carriages from Canada for the UK and European market and maintains a thriving hire business, catering for Weddings and Events and the occasional television and film work. Much of his success he owes to the long term support and help he gets from his wife Jane and son Joe. As Adie says “our business is a team effort and I am eternally grateful to my family for their hard work and commitment.” As for the future, Adie will continue to work with heavy horses, both for business and as his passion and hopefully this will tie in with the long term plans for Harveys Brewery to bring gallons of enjoyment to their dedicated followers around the County and beyond. Harveys Brewery own two drays, an original Barrel dray which was previously owned by Horseman John Peacock of Lingwood Shires and purchased from Thimbleby & Shoreland Auction two years ago following John’s retirement. The dray had been used as a promotions vehicle for several breweries and John would change the plates around according to which Brewery he was showing for. Once purchased the dray which had been kept in great condition was worked on by the backroom boys at Harveys Brewery who changed the livery colours. With the higher profile work being taken on it was decided to purchase a Show Dray which was acquired in April this year, originally owned by a Doctor in Scotland and used with a team of Clydesdales. Once again Harveys boy’s who are used to working on metal with the vats and machinery at the brewery, were again able to restore the vehicle to pristine condition in time for its first outing at SESHA this year. Adie Matthews is the ideal companion to Harveys Brewery, not only is he able to take on the role of drayman, drive and supply the horses and help maintain the carts, he also takes great pride in the appearance of the complete outfit and is the perfect showman to take the turnout into the show ring. For the past twenty years since his first driving gelding ‘Patch’, Adie has dedicated his life to heavy horses and combining his passion for driving. Under the name of Patchlands Shires, Adie set up his first business but despite bad luck some eight years ago when fire destroyed everything he owned, bar his six horses, Adie has fought back to keep his Carriage Driving business

Deliver to your door, or shop In Store – the choice from ‘For Animals’ is yours

Everything ‘For Animals’

By Linda Warburton

re you tired of traipsing to your nearest shop to get that all important feed or bedding for your favourite companion? Do you wish someone would help out with the chores and deliver directly to your stable/livery yard or even to your house? Do you wish that they would do this for FREE? Look no more, there is a fantastic service in Sussex that has been around for a few years now and is expanding as you read this article. ‘For Animals‘ has been delivering Feed and Bedding for the last seven years to the Henfield, Brighton, Horsham area and has built up a fantastic reputation for its fast, efficient, friendly and cost effective service. Originally the brainchild of Gary Mold, the business was set in motion some seven years ago operating from a warehouse near to Henfield in West Sussex. Gary, a onetime smallholder, has always shown an interest in Animal Feed and Bedding and this is where his expertise lies. Not only does the business supply to the equestrian

trade, it also carries a range of small animal feed and bedding for animals such as sheep, chicken and goats. For Animals is a family business with Gary’s brother Roy on board as Company driver. Gary’s tenacity and work ethic has this year bucked the trend and business has flourished, so much so, that in April this year he has opened his first store at Bridge House Equestrian Centre, near Slinfold, West Sussex. Established next to Bramble Hill farm, Bridge House Equestrian Centre is run under the watchful eyes of Chloe Finch from Total Equine Solutions. Here a number of equestrian businesses share a very busy yard. It is home to at least fifty horses, liveries and riding school with various events and activities that take place during the year. This is the ideal venue for a retail outlet, with an established customer base at the Centre. For Animals also support the nearby Racehorse Sanctuary run by Graham Oldfield and Sue Collins. Back at the store, manager Karen has been at the premises for four years and came as part of the package when Gary took over the store. She is well known in the area and people know and trust her when it comes to making that all important purchase. Karen has four horses of her own and although now a self confessed ‘Happy Hacker’ as time does not allow more, she has in the past undertaken Endurance and later Dressage disciplines. With the shop now firmly established, it is hoped that people who are nearby can pop in to order their feed and bedding thus establishing the shop as a useful retail outlet. In store the shop sells so much more than just the essentials such as horse feed and bedding; there are supplements from Global Herbs, Equine America, NAF, just to name a few. A range of what Karen describes as ‘disposable tack’ such as stirrup leathers, girths, reins, head collars and plenty of yard and stable equipment including wheelbarrows, spades, brushes and haynets. There is a great

selection of first Aid equipment and Hi-Viz gilets, much needed on the foggy day that I visited the shop. The distribution area for Gary is enormous, considering there are no hidden costs for delivery, making it ideal for livery yards and larger equestrian establishments. It stretches from Gatwick in the North to Brighton in the South, Worthing in the West to Rottingdean in the East and all areas in between. To the future, they are keeping their fingers crossed that following on from the success

Gary and the For Animal team have taken steps to Sponsor a rider and have teamed up with up and coming young rider Holly James. Holly has this to say about her sponsorship and the opportunity that For Animals has given her; “Hey, I am Holly James and I am sponsored by For Animals. I am 10 years old and I am hoping to be an Olympic rider or somewhere near (well, a dream always has to start somewhere) There are some things that I have achieved so far with the help of For Animals, which include competing at Royal Windsor in the SP class in 2014 and winning in dressage at Preliminary and Novice level. There are other future things that I am very excited about which include training with BYRDS and hopefully getting onto squads this year and with my two new ponies I will be looking to compete seriously in dressage, hopefully progressing to Elementary level. My current competition pony is called ‘Barnsbrook Royal Portrait’ and she is 128cm and is a Welsh x Arab. She has taught me many things and we are now looking at junior squads. I also Have a pony called ‘De LA Roche Gloriousa’ who is a 3-year-old and at the moment I am starting her career in Dressage.

Equine Dental Care

Please mention

The British Equine Veterinary Association (BEVA) has issued guidance to horse owners to help them understand the rules surrounding equine dental care

Who can do what in your horse’s mouth?

T

ype ‘equine dentist’ into any internet search engine and you are likely to get a plethora of information and a wide range of horse dental care providers. Despite this vast array of accessible material there is still misunderstanding amongst horse owners over who can do what in a horse’s mouth. To help protect our horses and the legal status of all involved, the British Equine Veterinary Association has a section devoted to equine dental care on their website www.beva.org. uk/useful-info/CareersinEquineHealth/DentalTechnician including a document on current regulations for dental procedures. All diagnostic and treatment procedures in the horse’s mouth are Acts of Veterinary Surgery under the Veterinary Surgeons Act 1966. The removal of small dental overgrowths and sharp enamel points with hand rasps is considered to be routine care rather than diagnosis/treatment and can legally be carried out by anyone. Some procedures, despite being Acts of Veterinary Surgery under the law, may be delegated safely to ‘suitably qualified’ Equine Dental Technicians without compromising the horse’s welfare and safety.

These procedures are as follows:

■ Examination, evaluation and recording of dental abnormalities ■ The removal of loose teeth or dental fragments with negligible periodontal attachments ■ The removal of erupted, non-displaced wolf teeth in the upper or lower jaw under direct and continuous veterinary supervision ■ Palliative rasping of fractured and adjacent teeth ■ The use of motorised dental instruments where these are used to reduce overgrowths and remove sharp enamel points only. Horses should be sedated unless it is deemed safe to undertake any proposed procedure without sedation, with full informed consent of the owner. Suitably qualified EDTs are those who have a “Defra approved” qualification – having either passed the BEVA/ BVDA examination or the Worldwide Association of Equine Dentistry (WWAED) examination. No other qualifications are currently recognised by the UK authorities. BEVA recommends that, if you are a horse owner, you should safeguard your horse (and yourself) by: ■ Asking your dental care provider whether or not they have passed the BEVA/BVDA exam or the WWAED exam or check them out online. ■ Asking your dental care provider whether or not they are allowed to do whatever needs doing in your horse’s mouth (and checking with your vet if in doubt) ■ Asking what continuing dental education your dental care provider has done in the last couple of years. ■ Checking that your dental care provider has third party and professional indemnity insurance in case anything goes wrong. The number of vets taking the BEVA/BVDA exam in equine dentistry has increased in recent years with about 15 per cent of those who have passed the exam being vets. NM
