Q & A ❘ Paula Broadhurst BSc.,BVMS, Cert EM (Stud Med), MRCVS
What is Bone Spavin? B
By Paula Broadhurst
one spavin is a term used to describe osteoarthritis of the small hock joints (which includes the proximal intertarsal joint, the distal intertarsal joint and the tarsometatarsal joint). Depending on the severity of the changes, it may be associated with a visible fibrous or bony swelling on the inside of the hock. The clinical signs horses may show with bone spavin are extremely variable and can include poor performance, loss of movement, frequent disuniting when cantering, resistance when ridden, stopping when jumping and subtle or obvious lameness. The diagnosis of bone spavin can be confirmed through your vet conducting a lameness examination and possibly performing nerve blocks to demonstrate that this area in the hock is the actual cause of the lameness. Radiographs will often show bone changes however, the degree of change on the radiographs does not always correspond directly to the severity of the lameness. In some cases a bone scan (nuclear scintigraphy) might be required to
confirm the diagnosis. There are a number of different options for the treatment of bone spavin with the ultimate aim being to manage the horses’ pain so that they can stay in work. In the pleasure horse, the main treatment option is usually non-steriodal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as Phenylbutazone (Bute), Danilon or Metacam. The lowest dose possible to keep the horse comfortable should always be used as long term use of high levels of NSAIDs has been associated with stomach ulceration, liver and/or kidney problems. Intra articular medication into the specific joint causing the lameness with corticosteroids, hyaluronan and/ or polysulfated glycosaminoglycans (PSGAGs) can provide excellent relief for many horses. Importantly, the clinical improvement in the lameness will usually far outlast the drug testing time so this is an important management strategy in competition horses and is often used in pleasure horses to reduce the need for NSAIDs. While opinion and research varies greatly on the therapeutic benefits of oral nutraceuticals such as glucosamine, chondroitin and hyaluronic acid, many owners report an excellent response to treatment. While the horse may still require the
use of NSAIDs the dose and frequency might be greatly reduced. The use of intra-muscular injections of PSGAGs and hyluronic acid has also had some positive reports for the management of bone spavin. There are various herbal remedies available on the market however, these are often lacking in clinical trials to support there effectiveness. Additionally many horses respond well to drug called Tiludronate (which is given intravenously to treat bone spavin) it is however, quite expensive when compared to NSAID use. In some cases that have failed to respond to other treatments, conducting surgery to stimulate the joints to fuse or performing a neurectomy can be an appropriate option to consider. Careful attention to farriery is very important in horses with bone spavin. The feet must be kept well balanced and often improved comfort is created by rolling the toe to ease break-over and/or raising the heels. Ultimately there are many treatment options available for the management of bone spavin and the best combination of strategies appropriate for your individual horse should be decided based on consultation with your vet. Welcome to the magical world of Ponies
T
his is a lovely story telling the tale of Kirsty, a delightful, friendly girl who after a trip with her aunt to a horse fair discovers a poorly looking pony and with help from family and friends embarks on a partnership and journey with the special pony. Life throws in many twists and turns for them, not least winning a competition in a magazine to train with a top dressage rider. Not as straight forward as it would appear, as the prize also comes with filming for a TV series. This sounds like every pony mad child’s dream, but even with family support, life can be challenging and Kirsty soon finds this out. The book should appeal to any equestrian minded person, child or adult. Kirsty is a hard worker and an inspiration; it is a delight to follow her on her journey, with the premise that good will triumph in the end. Great read and timely reminder for Christmas, you could buy yourself some quiet time on Christmas day if you popped this in any Childs stocking. ctober is always an exciting month, The Staff College & Royal Military Academy Sandhurst Drag Hunt have their opening meet in Dogmersfield, Hampshire. Just four years ago I first joined them on my horse, Buckaroo Bob at their Eversley Meet. The first thing I noticed when I arrived was how well organised and friendly everyone was. A high standard of turnout, well laid lines and a super amount of jumps saw for a thrilling first hunt. Bob loved every minute and I couldn’t wait to go again. The next three seasons saw me stick with the point to pointers, either leading them over fences or taking my own pointers to get their hunt certificates ready for the point to point season. I must admit, a hairy ride on Reggie soon saw me stick to taking my trusty steed Bob! I also rode my other horse Miltown Star at a few meets. Sadly, a pretty nasty fall out in the field in 2013 saw me hospitalised with a broken pelvis, with Noah thankfully coming away unscathed. At that point, I decided to leave hunting him and focus on our show jumping, then introducing XC back in again slowly. So far going well. Even with the nasty accident in the November, I was back out on the hunt field again by March 2014. I must just say how brilliant everyone was the day of the accident, foot followers to other riders, my horse, my lorry, my belongings, everything was looked after. Although hunting obviously has its risks, I really couldn’t feel safer than I do out with the SC & RMAS Team. Since retiring Dave from racing last year, it was always going to be interesting to see how he coped out in the field. Bearing in mind I couldn’t hold one side of him when in racing, I was still up for the challenge to take him hunting. First up, we went to Minley, this is a lovely ride for first timers. Just perfect for Dave, and snaffle mouthed, he
was a dream! We had a brilliant time. So the 2015 opening meet arrived, and on Sunday 13th October we all met on the lawn in front of the grand Four Seasons Hotel. I have only had the pleasure of attending this meet once before but it really is one of my favourites. Over the years I have made some lovely friends and it was so nice to see everyone and catch up. The meet is just overwhelmingly picturesque and sweeps through the hotels grounds before heading off to where we find the awesome field with lovely hedges to jump! Dave was brilliant and he settled nicely alongside my friend Karl’s horse pretty much the whole way round. We had a fantastic day. I really would encourage anyone who loves cross country to come out with the SC & RMA Sandhurst Drag Hunt if you ever get the chance, it really is brilliant! S&D Equitation held their biggest and best show yet, celebrating their 25th year of organising family fun horse shows. For the first time a dog show was also included which proved to be very popular. To accommodate the 5 rings of competitions going on the show was held at Tweseldown Racecourse. With over 100 competitors on the day, the classes were busy and very competitive. Mother Nature was very kind and the rain held off until the very last jumping class. Classes ranged from “My First Pony to “Open Jumping”. There were also many side stalls including Face-Painting, Local Charities and Bouncy Castles.

early seventy competitors representing fifteen countries came together in the grounds of historic Blair Castle, seat of the Dukes of Atholl, to contest the 34th running of the European Eventing Championships, classified as a CCI3* competition. Each country was entitled to enter a team of four plus two individual riders but, as the host nation, Britain was allowed to field a team of four and eight individuals. Austria and Poland put forward only one rider apiece, while Denmark and Finland were each represented by two riders. Against the stunning backdrop of Blair Castle the FEI Welcome Ceremony heralded the start of this event with a band of pipes and drums leading competitors to the forecourt, preceded by their national flags. After being entertained by a magical feast of music, poetry and dancing, the riders attended a reception inside the castle.

the Union Jack for the first time at senior level. With time and jumping penalties cross-country, Holly Woodhead slipped down the leader board but Izzy Taylor riding KBIS Briarlands Matilda, one of only three combinations to complete inside the time, rose to third position behind the Germans. Four other British lady riders were also in the top ten: Kitty King (Persimmon), Gemma Tattersall (Arctic Soul), Laura Collett (Grand Manoeuvre – their second senior squad appearance) and Pippa Funnell (Sandman 7). “I didn’t expect my mare to go so well in these conditions,” said Izzy
Taylor. “I’m very pleased with her. We had a very good round even though we tripped on the corner of the second last fence.” With the German team in the lead, forty-five riders were through to the showjumping phase when the sun came out again. Oliver Townend and Fenya’s Elegance were the first of the Brits to jump clear and a great cheer went up for Pippa Funnell, also clear on Sandman 7, who, along with her mother Jenny Nolan, had given half the horse to her long-time mentor Ruth McMullen as an 80th birthday present. Anna Grayston ❘ World Champion Pony Pairs Carriage Driver Dreams do come true
Golden Girl Anna Grayston
B
ack in September, carriage driver Anna Grayston competed at the FEI World Driving Championships for Ponies in Breda, Holland. Anna who is part of the GBR Team was competing with her ponies Kings Irish Son, Bluewillow Johnny Reb and her backstepper’s Kerry Whiteman’s Kings Blaze in the Pony Pairs class. Anna from Four Elms, Kent is a UKCC Level 3 carriage driving coach and a full time mum and has been preparing for this competition all year with the aim of bring home a medal. Anna has numerous accomplishments to her name and has competed at the last four Pony World Championships. In Pau 2013 Anna won the bronze medal in the Pony Pairs class, so this time her eye was firmly set on a higher placing. Anna and her team have had a busy year as due to not competing in 2014 Anna had to fit the full selection criteria into the beginning of this year so that should could catch the eye of the selectors. This was not all smooth sailing as Anna and the ponies had a bad crash just before the beginning of the season but managed to train and get their confidence back with the ponies to be able to compete at the first competition of the carriage driving season. We asked Anna how she coped with the aftermath of the accident “How did I feel after the accident” says Anna, “It was hard to analyse it with no emotion as it was such a traumatic day. Especially as, the first thoughts were of an injured, stapled pony, broken harness, a very bent carriage

and only five days until our first selection event. But looking rationally, there were three important factors and these were what I focused on. Firstly both ponies were sound and amazingly not traumatised by the experience. Secondly; everything that was broken was fixable; thirdly it wasn’t careless driving on my part that caused the accident. Having taken time to digest all of that, I had to focus on the future and carry on with our preparations for the 3DE the following week as these were crucial to our bid to make the British Team for the world Championships.” After completing the selection criteria and being selected for the British Team Anna then went to the major Pony Carriage Driving Show in Minden, Germany to compete with her ponies in the company of some of the competitors that would be at the Pony

World Champion Pony Pairs Carriage Driver World Championships later in the year. There were 37 Pony Pairs competing, the biggest class in the history of the sport. This was a very successful trip as Anna won the Pony Pairs class and also as part of her prize won a pink scooter! Lots more training then took place with the GBR team trainers and then they were ready to head to Breda. Anna started with a great score in the dressage phase putting her in second place, then after a fantastic marathon round Anna was the overnight leader after two days of competition. Going into the last day which is the cones driving, Anna had a 7.38 penalty lead. The cones course was very tricky and as the weather had deteriorated over the competition it was becoming very challenging to drive. Anna said “with the cones running in reverse order and going into the arena last put us under immense pressure and the atmosphere was electric. The course drove much harder than it had walked seven hours earlier but my ponies were brilliant throughout and all our hard work and training had paid off”. Anna did not know when she came out that she had won and had to wait to hear it over the loud speaker before realising that her dreams of becoming the World Pony Pairs Champion had come true! Alongside Anna winning her gold medal, Anna was also part of the GBR Team who won Team Bronze. As for plans for the future, Anna says “Keep all three ponies sound and happy. Not to over compete the ponies. Start qualification for 2017 World Championships. Maybe go to some new foreign shows. Work on my performance to improve all areas. Try to find new pony to bring on.” We wish Anna the best of luck for the future. NM

Farewell to Ann Elizabeth Pring
T
WORDS : Dave Chandler IMAGES : LRG Photography
he late District Commissioner of Crawley Horsham Hunt South Pony Club, Ann Elizabeth Pring’s funeral was held at 11.45 on Friday the 9th of October 2015 at Chichester Crematorium. The service was attended by some 200 people who watched Ann’s cortege arrive led by 4 black Friesian stallions and flanked by 2 of Ann’s own horses, Bali and Verona, ridden by Ann’s daughter Molly and her friend Amelia Bardwell, Ann’s son Dominic rode with the carriage master to accompany His mother on her final journey. The chapel was filled by friend’s family and Pony Club members, many of whom had to listen to the service from the open doors of the chapel as tribute was paid to this amazing woman who had bravely fought cancer for nine months. She was born in Redhill in 1967 and grew up in Oxted Surrey, Her love of horses started early when she took lessons at Stangrove Hall riding stables from age eight, she
became a keen member of Old Surrey and Burstow Pony Club and regularly took part in local events. Two of Ann’s old friends from that time Cathie Hawkins and Janice Hawkins attended Ann’s funeral, which is testament to the friendships that the Pony Club creates. Ann attended Plumpton Agricultural College in 1987 where she met Dave Chandler. They

set up a very successful farming business together in Binstead near Arundel West Sussex After the birth of Ann’s second child Molly her love of all things equestrian re-emerged with the purchase of Coco, a Shetland pony for daughter Molly to start her riding career at the tender age of four. Ann and Molly joined the local CHHS PC in 2004 enjoying rallies and games. With Ann’s encouragement Molly has gone on to be an accomplished horsewoman in her own right winning many Jumping and MGA accolades. Ann soon became an active member of the CHHS PC committee and became District Commissioner in 2010 Ann’s great passion was to ensure that anybody who wanted to take up riding and membership of the club regardless of whether they were privileged enough to own a Pony of their own was given that chance. She worked tirelessly helping young members without ponies to achieve that goal. NM
