TAFE Accredited Saddleworld Saddle Fitting A saddle that fits perfectly is the first step to success. At Saddleworld, we emphasise that competent guidance from a professionally trained saddle fitter is paramount. TAFE NSW is Australia’s largest training provider and it is among the largest in the world. The letters ‘TAFE’ stand for Technical and Further Education and, for hundreds of thousands of people each year, it also stands for high quality, accessible training. Saddleworld has been working very closely with the Western Sydney TAFE to develop a comprehensive Saddle Fitting Course. The Saddleworld Saddle Fitting Course is fully TAFE accredited and those students who complete the course and pass the assessment will now receive the TAFE Statement of Attainment in Saddle Fitting. This gives the Saddleworld Saddle Fitting course greater credibility, as it is nationally recognised throughout the TAFE education system which now brings a formal, credible qualification that can be attained by Saddleworld store owners and staff.
Saddleworld Safety in the Saddle For maximum safety in the saddle you need good quality saddlery, which is carefully selected, fits the horse well and is subsequently maintained to a high standard. Accidents occur when equipment fails as a result of neglect or misuse, or when the components and the process of manufacture is below an acceptable standard. A good safeguard is to purchase from established saddlery retailers, where they have fully qualified saddlers that are committed to maintaining high standards in respect of materials and workmanship. Nonetheless, the responsibility for safety belongs as much to the consumer as it does to the manufacturer and/or retailer. The Saddle The saddle and its mountings, the leathers, stirrup irons and girth, are items of equipment which if cared for will last a long time. But there are points of potential failure which need to be checked regularly. On the saddle itself the most vulnerable area is concerned with the girth straps and their attachment. The stitching securing the girth straps to the webs passing round or over the tree, will wear or perish in time and will need to be replaced. Girth straps, however good the quality of the leather, are also subject to wear. When the holes stretch and the leather is in danger of splitting between the holes new straps should be fitted. Buckles “A Stitch in Time” is a good maxim to observe when it comes to girths, leathers and bridles but when purchasing any of those items the buckles, and in the case of the bridle the hook stud fastenings, deserve particular scrutiny. Avoid buckles which are obviously poorly finished with the edges left sharp and the tongues loose and perhaps bent. The former cut into the leather and the latter are likely to prove unreliable. Replace bent or loose hook studs immediately. Stirrup Leathers Stirrup leathers receive the most wear at the point where they turn through the eye of the stirrup iron. It is for this reason that stirrup leathers are made with the tougher “grain” side (the outside) facing inwards, since the oil or crème makes it more resistant to friction. A wise precaution is to have leathers shortened every so often so as to move the point of contact with the iron. Replacing your stirrup leathers regularly with good quality new ones is highly recommeded. Regular cleaning with a glycerin-based soap and reliable “leather food” preparation is essential if equipment is to be kept soft, supple and serviceable. Stirrup Irons The best stirrup irons are made from stainless steel, titanium or carbon fibre. Nickel irons are cheaper and are liable to bend or break. If using a conventional pattern iron choose a heavy one big enough to slip off the foot in an emergency but not so big as to allow the whole foot to pass through and become trapped. Always wear riding boots or heavy shoes rather than flat-soled footwear.

Fit For Safety The fitting of saddlery is as important an aspect of safety as is proper maintenance. Saddles and bridles, which for any reason cause the horse discomfort and inhibit his movement can create an unnecessary stress situation which inevitably leads to a lowering of the safety threshold. To ride safely it is always best to have a new saddle fitted by a qualified saddle fitter and to consult them about any subsequent adjustments to the fitting.

THE PRESTIGE TREE The tree in Prestige saddles has been designed to adapt perfectly to the horse and to maintain the best seat for the rider. Made of a special mix of fibres, it is at least 1 kg lighter than traditional saddles and needs no metal reinforcement. This saddle has advantages over those made of natural materials, like wood. Though wood is elastic, it still has “life” in it.
For this reason as atmospheric conditions change and the years go by the characteristics of the wood change, becoming less stable and less resistant. The Prestige tree, on the other hand, was purpose designed to provide the same elasticity as one made of wood, while at the same time, ensuring maximum stability over time. That is why Prestige offers a lifetime guarantee, except in the case of an accident. In addition, the width of a Prestige saddle can always be altered. It can be narrowed or widened, depending on the shape of the horse, without having to take the saddle apart. For this reason even when the shape of the horse changes the product remains usable. Ever committed to ongoing product development, Prestige Italia has launched the new Lux Leather in the colours, tobacco or black.
Panels flocked with a special synthetic fibre that prevents compression of the material and therefore requires less maintenance. These panels are especially suited to horses that are asymmetric between their front and back or vice versa.
These saddles stand out because of the type of leather used. This leather undergoes natural tanning, and is processed to the highest standards, in the tradition of Prestige’s products.
They also offer more options: panels +1 cm / +2 cm at the back or with half stuffing.
The saddles are lined in smooth or printed leather and combine a suppleness characteristic of calfskin with a toughness typical of leather to a thickness of 3.3 mm. The Lux leather has the softness of calfskin leather however it has a high durability. The other leathers, which are used for the panels and the girths, is treated with an anti-sweat process, thus reducing the amount of maintenance required and reinforcing strength within these areas.

Two apertures on the seat give this saddle a distinctive appearance: the large oval aperture towards the rear and the second, smaller, aperture to the front. The holes perform both an air-circulation function that facilitates the passage of air and, accordingly, the cooling of the horse and the rider, and a therapeutic function.
