Virginia Horse Center dedicates new ring in memory of Sandy gerald The Hilltop rings project, a loving effort to memorialize former president of the Virginia Horse Shows Association Sandy Gerald, has been completed and it’s debut was during the Lexington Spring Series. The Virginia Horse Center has refitted Arena B and the adjacent schooling Arena A with new kruse Cushion Ride (kCR) footing to improve the showing experience for both horse and rider. Respected horseman and course designer Allen Rheinheimer of Zionsville, IN was brought in to complete the upgrades which included resurfacing the 160’ x 230’ arena and 96’ x 250’ schooling arena with U.S. manufactured kCR footing, re-grading, and reshaping the base for drainage. Located next to the Hill Top Campground and Community Park Pavilion, both rings were previously composed of a bluestone base and natural sand. Rheinheimer is regarded as a U.S. based FEI footing expert. “We even have kCR in my wife, Cathy’s, outdoor and indoor arenas and, believe me, if it wasn’t a great product, I would definitely hear the negatives,” he expressed. “kruse Cushion Ride doesn’t need to be

mixed with finer sands that make footing pack, and it is really the perfect blend for the more seasoned, older horses.” In approximately two weeks the project was completed and the formal dedication of arena “B”, renamed the Sandy Gerald ring, will happen in August during the Lexington National Horse Show. The benefits of the renovations are numerous and competitors can look forward to exhibiting on quality footing suited for high performance athletes. Composed from 100% recycled product, shredded Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) fiber mixed with proper sand, kCR footing is all weather and requires limited water application because it retains moisture so maintenance is significantly reduced. Sandy Gerald, who passed in 2016, had a special place in the Virginia Horse Center family. He was the longtime coach of the Hollins University equestrian team and became a part of the Virginia Horse Shows Association Hall of Fame in 2015. Ernie Oare, president of the Foundation, is pleased that his friend’s contributions to the horse center could be memorialized in this way for years to come. Morven Park Equestrian Center Upgrades for 2017 This year will be a busy year at the Morven Park International Equestrian Center, and I’m so pleased with the activities we have planned for 2017. We will
host: 7 Hunter/Jumper shows, including the iconic AA Middleburg Classic Horse Show. 9 Dressage Shows (hosted by VADA NOVA, CDCTA & PVDA), Pony Club Show Jump Rally, 2 Carriage Driving competitions (Recognized Arena Driving Trial & Carriage Pleasure Show) 3 Horse Trials (2 National & 1 International/CIC 3* with Olympic caliber horses and riders) where riders participate in “equestrian triathlon.” In addition to the show schedule already on the calendar, they are working on plans to add Arena Polo this summer. Get those picnic baskets & blankets ready, and bring the kids for some good family fun! The Morven Park International Equestrian Center is scheduled for a major overhaul in 2017, beginning with the construction of three new outdoor riding arenas. Thanks to a very generous donation, our current Davis and Bedford arenas are undergoing a complete makeover, with new footing and
fencing to be installed over the next two months. We’ll be launching a new Equestrian membership program that will expand trail riding opportunities to Morven Park donors. Morven Park welcomes over 300 volunteers each year who are critical to the success of our events. Volunteering is an excellent way to learn more about equestrian competitions and become a valuable part of Loudoun’s equestrian community. All who are interested are welcome, and no experience is necessary for many of the jobs. Even if you don’t ride or compete, we invite you to come and watch Olympic horses and riders up close and personal as they navigate the cross country course obstacles at top speed, or be transported back to the 1800s as horses and carriages compete in the elegant Carriage Pleasure Show. We look forward to seeing you in 2017 and sharing these experiences with you. Be sure to check out the calendar of events

here ’ s that moment after you come off your horse where you assess the damage to yourself. This time, I fell forward onto my knees, holding my head, still wearing my helmet. My nose dripped blood onto my breeches, and tears filled my eyes. My head hurt terribly, front and back. My helmet was cracked at the back. My 15-year-old paint horse had bucked me, in the arena, at a simple trot. To be sure, we’ve had our differences in the 13 years we’ve been partners, but I’ve never been bucked until this spring. Why is a story for another time, but my point is this: I would never have expected my equine partner to hit the “eject” button on me. I remounted, rode for another few uneventful minutes, and then untacked. I didn’t lose consciousness, so I drove home. I slept most of the next couple days, feeling like I was in slow motion. I experienced frequent headaches, and
it hurt my eyes to look at screens. I liked the dark. My nose bled off and on, and my neck was sore. Sometimes I would be talking and just draw a blank. I wondered if I should have gone to the emergency room. I’m sharing my story, because according to Dr. Stephanie Bajo, this is a typical rider experience with concussion – down to my mistakes. The University of Virginia neuropsychologist is an assistant professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Neurobehavioral Sciences. She also evaluates patients
may order scans if they suspect a more severe injury. Bajo says you don’t always have to
at UVA’s Acute Concussion Evaluation Clinic in Charlottesville. She is a former show jumper with a passion for educating people – especially fellow equestrians – about mild traumatic brain injuries. “Concussion is the most mild type of traumatic brain injury,” Bajo says. Traumatic brain injuries can range from concussion to heavy bleeding or tissue damage in the brain. Concussions are not diagnosed by scans, but by symptoms. Typical symptoms include dizziness, disorientation, vomiting, mental slowing, headache, nausea and vision disturbances. Doctors
and are having symptoms,” Bajo says. He or she can consult with you about whether further care is necessary and how to recover. But if there is outward bleeding, or if symptoms continue to worsen, especially if they worsen rapidly, it’s time to head to the ER, she says. Other signs you may need the ER include consistent vomiting, weakness in any part of the body, impaired motor skills, decreased comprehension and personality changes. The good news, says Bajo, is that the majority of people with concussions

will recover. How quickly depends on age and health. A healthy college-age person can expect to recover in seven to 10 days; adolescents between three and 30 days; and adults within two weeks or even longer. “While concussion is a mild form of brain injury, for the vast majority, we expect a full recovery from concussion,” Bajo says. Symptoms that persist beyond typical recovery time warrant further evaluation, such as what she does at the Acute Concussion Evaluation Clinic. “I try to combine all aspects of a person’s history... to understand how their brain is working,” she says. One of the mistakes I made was getting back on my horse after I was bucked. Equestrians are taught to remount so we restore confidence in ourselves and in our animals. Possible head injury is where an exception needs to be made, Bajo says. “If you hit your head, don’t get back on the horse,” she says. “It’s important to get rid of some of that mentality.” She adds, “You’re putting yourself at risk of falling again and getting another injury.” First, to ride safely, equestrians need all the functions that concussions symptoms hamper. Second, another injury lengthens recovery. Bajo says riders should follow the Zurich Return to Play protocol, which allows for a gradual return to full physical and cognitive activities after a rest period. The tiredness that comes with a concussion is a signal that the brain is recovering, she says. It’s also important to not allow an unnecessarily extended rest, which can bring new difficulties. People with previous anxiety and depression are more at risk of those things following the experience. Continued on page 10 H O R S E TA L K M A G A Z I N E

CONCUSSIONS...... from page 9 “What we don’t want to see is someone being very scared and not moving forward with that gradual resumption of activities,” she says. That’s especially true for equestrians, whose daily and social activities revolve around their horses. It’s a matter of culture and community. “It’s not a hobby, it’s part of people’s lives,” she says. Of course, it would be better to avoid injury entirely, or minimize potential for injury. Dr. Bajo says the incidence rate of concussion in equestrian activities is 9-15% of injuries reported. In other words, she says, “It (concussion) compromises 9-15% of all horseback riding injuries.” But that’s just what researchers can confirm. Bajo believes concussions are widely underreported. Equestrian activities are less regulated, with fewer sanctioned activities. Falls and injuries occur mostly during schooling, not sanctioned events, she says. Furthermore, equestrian activities carry a substantial risk. “Equestrian activities have higher
rates of more severe brain injuries and total body injuries than other activities” like rugby, skiing, and car racing, she says. The risk comes from the distance of the rider above the ground and the speed of movement. You’d think that equestrians of all disciplines would be faithful helmet wearers, but Bajo says research indicates consistency in helmet wear

is low, and decreases with riding experience. “It’s shocking,” she says. Good riders on good horses can still get hurt, she says. You need a helmet “no matter how much you trust your animal.” “We can’t predict their behavior Continued on page 12

CONCUSSIONS...... from page 10 although we can trust some horses more than others,” she says. “Anything can occur with the most sane, bombproof animal.” And when it does, she says, “Using a helmet can reduce risk of brain injury by 50 percent.” “Using a helmet does not prevent concussion,” she says. “It prevents skull fracture. If you hit your head with a helmet on, that does not mean you have not sustained a concussion.” It’s a matter of physics. “When a rider falls and hits their head on the ground, the brain accelerates forward and hits the front of the skull,” she says. “It often doesn’t cause a visible injury.” She adds, “You’re stopped, but your brain keeps moving within the skull.” People are often surprised to learn you can get a concussion without hitting
your head. This can happen when your horses approaches the fence for a jump, refuses, and the rider is thrust forward. The brain continues to move. Even a torso hit can result in a concussion. These things can also result in what’s called a “coupcontracoup” injury, where the brain hits the front and back of the skull. In my case, this could explain why the front of my head hurt so badly when the impact caused a crack to the back of my helmet. I was likely thrown forward before landing on the back of my head. Bearing all this in mind, Bajo says it’s just good policy to wear a helmet whenever you’re with a horse. “I recommend people wear helmets mounted or unmounted, whenever you interact with the animal,” she says. “While the risk may be decreased, you are still at risk when dealing with the animal.” It’s advice I’ll be heeding.

All ASTM/SEI certified equestrian helmets are required to meet the same minimum standards. That said, designs can vary. Some are better suited for round or oval head shapes, and some come down lower in back to shield the base of the skull. Extra money buys competition chic and better ventilation. The best helmet is the one that fits you properly – regardless of the price tag.

Tom Seay Talks About... Great Rides Close to Home by tom seay

e are often asked to recommend an event or a close-to-home event for Virginia riders and their horses. Of course, there are shows and local trail rides everywhere. Perhaps you would like to treat yourself and your
horse to something special. At our farm in Culpeper, we do a Friday-Saturday event called an Introduction to Cattle Drives. It is designed for trail riders to have a first-time experience in a safe environment even if you or your horse have never done this. Driving over 100 head of cattle through woodlands, streams, and pastures is an

adventure that never gets old. For less than $100, your parking, your stall, one-on-one instruction, two cattle drives and a Friday night Team Penning event is an unbelievable bargain and you don’t have to go out west. The Gathering at the Farm is an annual event that happens mid-May is a relaxed atmosphere
for trail riders from all over the country. This year the Virginia Draft Horse & Mule Association will host demonstrations with work horses, mules, wagons, plowing and hands-on instruction. All of this is combined with a trail ride, wagon rides, seminars with Bobby Knight of Knight Horsemanship on natural horsemanship, Dustin Kelley of Kelley Farrier Services on hoof care and a seminar on equine dentistry. An old fashioned southern country picnic is mid-day on Saturday under the grand walnut trees of Andora Farm and a traditional full banquet on Saturday evening is the icing on the cake. Even if you do not have a horse at this time, you would be most welcome. Older folks can reminisce about work horses in the past and share it with their children and/or grandchildren. Anyone in the horse world in central Virginia has heard of the historic Belmead Plantation. For the filming of the Best of America by Horseback National Television Show, they have opened the plantation up for the public to join us as we ride and film this great riding location outside of Richmond. Tens of thousands enjoyed reading
about our recent historic Knights of the Golden Horseshoe ride. We traveled back in history with period costume and our horses to follow Virginia’s first governor’s ride of 1716. In the beginning of June, we will retrace the famous ride of Jack Jouett where a young man during the Revolutionary War rode through the night to Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello to warn Patrick Henry and Thomas Jefferson of the British plans for an early morning capture and execution thus dubbing Jack Jouett the “Paul Revere of the South”. Our ride will be hosted, in part, the town of Mineral, VA with a parade, an afternoon ride on a portion of that famous ride and an extremely rare opportunity to ride horses for the cameras at Monticello. Due to the logistical complexities, this ride is limited to twelve people. I do not know of this historic ride ever being recreated in the past. A dozen riders will be treated to incredible colonial and southern hospitality meals at Andora Farm original house that dates to 1758. I would love to invite you to ride

Toxic Plants HORSE HEALTH:

reen pastures make for happy horses and happy horse owners, but do you know what’s really growing in your fields? Fortunately, when offered adequate forage and feed, most horses preferentially avoid toxic plants. However, knowing what weeds and grasses are in your pasture can help prevent these unfortunate events or help your veterinarian treat a suspected toxicity. Several grasses can prove toxic when consumed in large enough quantities. Fescue, a common grass found in pastures, becomes toxic due to a fungi that parasitizes it and produces toxic compounds called ergot alkaloids. We predominantly, see prolonged Fescue and complicated gestation in pregnant mares. Complications range from a lack of milk production to dysmature foals, unhealthy
Buttercups placentas, and, rarely, abortion. Removing the mare from Fescue for the last few months of pregnancy or treating with Domperidone prior to Alsike Clover foaling can minimize these problems. With Dallisgrass intoxication, neurologic signs occur such as tremors and convulsions. Treatment includes removing the horse from the pasture. Another common forage, Alsike clover can cause photosensitization (sensitivity to sunlight) and eventually liver damage if consumed for long periods of time. Other common clovers found in pasture are more harmless. There most common side effect is a syndrome known as “Slobbers.” As the name suggests, horses that
1 6 H O R S E TA L K M A G A Z I N E M a y / J u n e 2 0 1 7
have eaten more than their fair share of clover will salivate excessively, often with long strings of drool pouring from their mouth. Removing your horse from
Some weeds you might find in your pasture that can be toxic include dogbane, milkweed, and buttercups. Dogbane and milkweed have gastrointestinal and cardiac effects, causing symptoms such as colic, diarrhea, and arrhythmias. Buttercups can cause mild irritation of the mouth and gastrointestinal tract. In all toxicities, treatment is based on the symptoms the horse is exhibiting.
Milkweed the affected pasture will resolve photosensitivity and slobbers, however, liver damage may be irreversible.
The list of plants that can be toxic to horses is quite long. The good news is that if provided adequate hay or good quality pasture, most horses will avoid those plants that are toxic. Effective pasture management to discourage weed growth and encourage grass for a healthy pasture is the best means of preventing toxicities in horses. Horses, Hard Work, and Fairy Dust The Interscholastic Equestrian Association National Hunt Seat Finals Wr it te n By P enny H awes

pril 21 - 23 was a busy weekend for middle and high school riders from around the country as the Interscholastic Equestrian
Meg Bonner and Carol Hawley after Meg received her first place at Zone Finals
Association (IEA) held their National Hunt Seat Finals at the Virginia Horse Center in Lexington, VA. Judges Rachel Kennedy and Melanie Smith Taylor assessed 380 riders ranging from 6th to 12th grade. The 67 horses
1 8 H O R S E TA L K M A G A Z I N E M a y / J u n e 2 0 1 7
in the competition were all loaned by 15 area barns and colleges. Even the torrential rains couldn’t dampen the spirits of the riders who came to compete, most of them on horses they’d never ridden before this show.
The I E A Formed in 2002 with just 200 riders, the IEA’s mission is “to introduce students in private and public middle and secondary schools (primarily ages 11 19) to equestrian sports.” Horse ownership is not a requirement, which gives many young riders an opportunity to compete that they wouldn’t otherwise have. Membership now tops 12,500, and covers 42 states. Horsemanship and equitation are the main judging criteria in an IEA show. To level the playing field, horses are drawn at the beginning of the competition, and over fences riders only get to warm up over 2 fences before they are judged in over fences class. Under saddle riders do not get a warm up. There are both flat and over-fences classes in divisions ranging from beginner through advanced. Continued on page 20

IEA NATIONALS..... from page 19 While all the riders work extremely hard to qualify for the national championships, there are often a few who stand out because of their courage, hard work and sheer determination to succeed. Katie Balding and Meg Bonner are two such riders.
Kat i e B ald ing - A Ha r d W o r king K id Katie Balding, who is a high school senior this year, rides out of Foxtail Farm in Smithfield, VA. As an avid equestrian, Katie is unusual in that she has never owned her own horse. She is a working student at Foxtail Farm, and, according to coach Dana Kiser, is a “very hard working kid. She rides 6 days a week, she spends a lot of time riding without stirrups. She really challenges herself.” The beauty of IEA program is that riders don’t have to own their own horse to compete, and they can still be very competitive. Virginia is part of IEA Zone 3, and both the Middle and High School Teams from HRA/Foxtail Farm were one of the three teams from Zone 3 who qualified and competed at Nationals this year. Dana has had great success in the past with her individual riders and her teams. The Foxtail Farm Equestrian Team was established in 2011 and despite being a first year team, Foxtail Farm riders qualified for the 2012 IEA Regional Finals, as well as IEA Nationals. The team tripled in size for the 2012-13 show year after combining forces with Hampton Roads Academy. Riders again qualified for Regional Finals, Zone Finals and IEA Nationals. And in 2013, as a member of the Foxtail Farm Middle School Team, Katie Balding won her division at Nationals! According to Dana “Katie has competed in Nationals 6 times now, which is
pretty unusual, and she was a National Champion a few years ago over fences. She puts in the hours and gets the work done.”
Meg Bonner T he Def inition of C ou rage According to coach Carol Hawley of Whitestone Farm, Meg Bonner has been “very wary of life since she drew her first breath”. Carol and Meg’s Mom, Kathleen, are best friends. Their relationship goes back to a time when Carol coached the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) team for the University of Mary Washington, and Kathleen was on her team. So Carol has known Meg all her life, and has tremendous respect for the way Meg handles herself. However, the idea of showing a horse that she had never ridden before, terrified Meg.
student, but it’s all about the horses and dogs. Even with her love for horses, Meg’s fear of riding unfamiliar horses could have been a barrier between her and competing at IEA competitions. According to Carol, “Meg wanted to do this, even though she was terrified. She loved the team concept of IEA. She loved being with the other kids. She loved being on the road and traveling to shows; however, drawing a horse or pony out of an envelope was the most frightening thing you could ever ask her to do.” Carol and Kathleen discussed plans for Meg and how they might be able to help her reach her goals. Kathleen wondered if Meg would ever get past the fear enough to compete, but Carol told her, “I guarantee something — this weakness, handled correctly, will become her greatest strength.” Carol’s words were prophetic. Under

“Her fear of what horses might do under saddle, particularly at the canter, is very strong. Her wariness of horses, was deep -- very, very deep.” Meg is passionate about horses. That’s all she thinks about — night and day. She’s very bright, and a very good

careful tutelage, Meg applied herself tirelessly to develop her riding skills so that she knew no matter what the horses did, she could handle it. Over the last year she has developed more skill and experience which has improved her confidence. She has also grown taller and
stronger. Meg’s first opportunity to join the IEA team at Whitestone Farm was last year when she was in 6th grade. Carol told Meg that she could enter a show whenever she was ready, no one was going to push her. Meg did enter the first show last year but once she was finished she decided she didn’t

want to do any more. Carol and Kathleen weren’t worried. Meg would proceed at her own pace. This year, Meg was ready. She was eligible for the Future Beginner Walk/Trot/Canter Division. Carol promised her, “Enter, and if you get to the show and you’re terrified, we’ll scratch. You can feel confident knowing you won’t be Continued on page 22

IEA Nationals..... from page 21 pushed beyond what you can do. If we enter you and we put you on the horse, and you go in the ring and you need to be out of there, let me know and we’ll get you out.” Although Meg did scratch at one show, her determination pushed her past the fear at all of her other shows. Carol remembers, “At her first show, she got her draw, got on, went in the ring, and won both of her classes. She had also qualified for Regionals. It was the happiest day of our lives! Here was the kid we had to promise could scratch! We were so thrilled she was at Regionals, and she won the whole thing. Then she won Zones! Since Meg had won her class at Regionals, which were held at Morven Park in February, she qualified to go to Zones. Held at Hazelwild Farm in Fredericksburg, Virginia, where Meg also participates in lessons, and shows,. Zone Finals was comprised of the top teams and individuals from 5 surrounding states. “The entire region was cheering her on. Everyone knew how hard she was working physically, to cover the deficit she had emotionally. Meg took full responsibility for her fear - she never blamed it on her horse, the wind, or her trainer. “ says Carol. Meg won her class at Zones! She was now qualified for Nationals! Carol said when you take a student to a show like the IEA National Finals, they all deserve to be there - everyone works so hard, but some really have the ability, while others “need the fairy dust sprinkled on them to help them out.” Although Meg didn’t place in the finals, Carol was thrilled with the quality of her riding –“she was one of the people who didn’t need the fairy dust.” Meg rode her best against 21 of the nation’s top IEA

Woodpecker Farm’s Middle School Team Woodpecker Farm’s Middle School Team was one of the three Zone 3 middle school teams who made the journey to Nationals. Riders Ella Peterson, Brook Morfit, Alyssa Paulette, Genevieve Lindamood and Isabel Baggette did their best under the tough competition at Nationals. Although they were just out of the ribbons at 9th place, Coach Beth Linton put it all in perspective when she stated, “ There are over 670 middle school teams in the country competing in IEA, and to win 9th place is something to be extremely proud of.” Beth, who is the trainer at Woodpecker Farm in Woodford, VA also coached two individual riders who qualified for Nationals. Emily Goddin is a senior this year that competed in Varsity Open Over Fences. Brook Morfit is in 7th grade and competed in the Future Novice Flat Class, and brought home the fifth place ribbon! Brook had luck on her side when she drew one of the show favorites, Kris Kringle for all three of her classes.

Dana brought 6 horses, and when asked about a favorite, replied, “Of course I love all our horses but Prince is a crossrail superstar and Lt. Joey is my daughter’s (7 years old) children’s pony. He is very cute, and has the “awww” factor.” As mentioned earlier, another favorite was Kris Kringle, a very cute gray pony owned by Beth Linton of Woodpecker Farm. Kris not only had the looks and personality, but also for the rideability. Both of Kris’s riders in the Future Intermediate class were called back, and ended up first and third in a class of 22. The IEA is committed to the wellness of the horses in all competitions. To recognize the quality of the horses donated for the three-day event, “Gypsy” (provided by Memory’s Hill Farm) was named Champion Outstanding IEA Hunt Seat Horse and “Gem” (also provided
by Memory’s Hill Farm) was named Reserve Champion Outstanding IEA Hunt Seat Horse. While the 380 riders, 67 horses, countless coaches, parents, friends and family members look back at the wet weekend in Lexington, the memories of the great rounds, supportive team mates and generous supporters will last, even as preparations for the next competition season begin. For more information about the IEA or to view results of the National Huntseat Finals, visit www.RideIEA.org, or their Facebook page - Facebook.com/rideiea/.
The US Equestrian Lettering Program The United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) now known as US Equestrian, offers a lettering program for student athletes in middle and high schools. The lettering program was started to provide recognition for athletes who may not letter in traditional high school sports. It’s a grass roots program, which welcomes riders in all disciplines, and all breeds of horse. Many riders already meet the requirements: • 100 hours of riding or training horses • Compete at 3 competitions - any level (they don’t need to be USEF recognized competitions) • Grades 5 - 12 • Program year June 1 - May 31 • Member of USEF Participation in the program can help on college applications, as administrators notice the recognition from the national governing body of the Olympic Equestrian sports. Improve your riding in a Murdoch Minute
Cr o s s y ou r th um b s Use this Murdoch Minute to train yourself to use your hands less and your legs more
By Wendy Murdoch
D
o your hands tend to wander apart when you ride? Does one hand drift more than the other? Do you lean to one side to turn instead of remaining upright? Here’s an easy exercise to find out just how much your need your hands to steer. Next time you ride notice what you do with your hands when you ride circles and turns. Do you pull one hand back, down or out? Do you wait until the last minute to ask your horse to turn? Do you forget to turn from your seat even when you know this is what you should be doing? Sometimes hands seem to have a mind of their own. You know you don’t want to pull on your horse. But you find
that one hand takes over when you think your horse isn’t listening. Crossing your thumbs when you ride will give you feedback about how much you want to use your hands. Many riders are very “one-sided” or “right-handed”. If you are one of those riders the following exercise awkward at first. Developing more awareness through non-habitual movements such as Feldenkrais® Awareness Through Movement® lessons will improve your coordination and use of both sides and allow your horse to go both ways more easily. You can find Feldenkrais classes and practitioners I your area by going to www.feldenkrais.com. To feel what it is like doing nonhabitual movements clasp your hands together. Notice which thumb is on top.

Look at how you have your fingers interlaced. Unlace your fingers and interlace them again with the opposite thumb on top. How does this feel? What is different in your shoulders? Does your body feel different in places other than your hands? Return to your habitual pattern. Notice what happens to your breathing, shoulders, and degree of overall comfort. Change the interlacing of your fingers back and forth a few times. Some people have to do this very slowly threading each finger in the new position. This is fine. It is your attention to the process that is important. Does the non-habitual interlacing feel more comfortable after switching 10 times? Or do you still have to think about where each finger goes? If so continue to switch back and forth for a while. Stop and notice which way your fingers are interlaced. Is this the habitual or nonhabitual way? Switch and feel what it’s like the other way. Notice that the nonhabitual movement has become easier, more familiar and you don’t have to think about it so much. By paying attention to what you are doing you build new

neural pathways in your brain so that you have a choice about which way to interlace your fingers. This concept can be used in many ways to improve your riding. While mounted hold your reins in both hands. Cross your thumbs one over the other. Notice which way you crossed them. Keep the thumbs crossed as you ride. Do you want to pull both hands to the side to turn? Do you feel stuck, like you can’t turn at all? Do you want to let go of your thumbs because you feel like this is a “stupid lesson”? If you find yourself frustrated and your horse not listening it is time to reexamine your seat. Turning should come from your pelvis not your hands! Catch a piece of mane with your pinky finger if you want to move your hands across the horse’s neck. This will not stop you but makes you more

aware when your hand crosses the neck. To turn think of pointing your belly button where you want to go let your shoulders follow your seat. Repeat this lesson crossing your thumbs the non-habitual way. How is this different? Is it more difficult to turn your horse or keep you hands in the middle? Switch the thumbs back and forth until the non-habitual way is as comfortable your habitual way. Use this Murdoch Minute to keep a drifting hand in place and prove that you can turn without pulling on your horse’s head. When both the habitual and nonhabitual way feels the same you will be more balanced on your horse and remember to enjoy the ride!
