Folding the Periphery traces the 960km expanse of rail corridor between Sydney and Melbourne, examining the spaces of transition along the line - spaces that house and support extractive industries and link them to the global economic market. Mapping these in-between spaces, Folding the Periphery condenses and collapses the complex material, economic and industrial relationships between regional and metropolitan areas into a mesh of images, videos and sculptures within the gallery space.

PERFORMANCE

A Room of One’s Own by Virginia Woolf

In Sentient Theatre’s inaugural piece, we celebrate the beautiful literacy and conceptual genius of Virginia Woolf, one of the greatest writers of the 20th Century, and her classic work, ‘A Room of One’s Own’. Based on a series of lectures by Woolf in 1928 on the subject of women and fiction, this adaptation restructures the narrative to feature four performers who represent

various aspects of Woolf’s mind in conversation with herself and the audience. The piece both energetically debates and gently reflects on the history of gender disparity, while keeping Woolf’s striking use of metaphor and charming humour alive. If you want to understand what is happening in the world today, this is the perfect place to start. Image credit: Frith Kennedy

EXHIBITION

As far as the eye can see As far as the eye can see presents the work of 22 Australian artists which celebrates the diversity and depth of current print-making practice. Each artist examines their individual relationship to the land through a variety of print media, describing both the vast scale and the intimate detail of our diverse natural environment and portraying Australia’s unique and varied geography.

GALLERY

From Aboriginal desert story-tellers and knowledge keepers, through the regional experience of World Heritage sites and journeys from city to country (or simply from place to place), to the challenge of speaking up in the face of climate change and mining, the common thread running through the exhibition is a deep respect for the land and a desire to continue sharing a meaningful relationship with it.

Meet the exhibitions Friday 30 August 10am–

11.30am. Join Gallery staff for morning tea and an informal walk & talk through the new exhibitions. Workshops with Freedom Wilson, see page 30.

EXHIBITION

Each final image is constructed from a single photograph taken while walking on Country. The works often feature native birds, and Morris has said: “Wherever I go, I walk a lot. I look and listen, and learn from our native

birds; I learn their rhythms and habits. I awake to, and follow their songs and conversations and respect their stories and importance. They form an intrinsic part of Indigenous cultural knowledge and spirituality, and despite colonisation, their stories, songs and our connection to them, continue.” Meet the exhibitions Friday 30 August 10am

Kent Morris, is a Barkindji man based in Melbourne, who explores the connections between contemporary Indigenous experience and contemporary cultural practices, and their continuation and evolution. EXHIBITION

Dónal Molloy-Drum: Decades Molloy-Drum is influenced by the vast space of the Wimmera and Mallee region where he lives. The landscape has directed his arts practice to a place of refinement and expression of simple line and form. The use of building materials can seem quite removed from the artist’s rural home but are a strong reminder of another life lived in busy cities and his suburban upbringing in Dublin.

GALLERY

Coming from both macro and micro sources, the organic shapes in the work emerge from the natural world without mimicking any specific specimen. Molloy-Drum says that the creative process often sees the detritus from one series informing the next body of work and it is through this process that he tries to make the materials softer, more malleable and tactile than seems possible, transforming them into abstract forms with an organic presence.

Meet the exhibitions Friday 30 August 10am –

11.30am. Join Gallery staff for morning tea and an informal walk & talk through the new exhibitions Workshop, see page 32.
