Traders and retailers want real inno va Traditionally, many growers and breeders unveil their new varieties during the international trade fair Plantarium. Do traders and retailers feel this is the perfect opportunity to see what novelties are out there?
Each year, somewhere between eighty and a hundred novelties will be presented during Plantarium. Breeders and growers opt for this opportunity to show their colleagues and commercial partners what new products they have to offer. This way, traders en retailers merely have to visit one single event to get an overview of what’s new and available. „That’s why we send all our employees to Plantarium. In a relatively short time you can get an impression of what’s available. Furthermore, many growers attend this trade show too, so it’s a good opportunity to meet up with a lot of suppliers at once”, states Chris Verbeek, account manager of R&G-Export. To R&G-Export, a wholesaler based in Boskoop (the Netherlands), novelties are extremely important. „It’s always the first question you get when visiting clients: what’s new? That’s why we produce a special
brochure twice a year, in spring and in autumn, in which we list all available novelties for our clients. That’s usually when we get our first sales orders. The very first thing they do is to select what new introductions they want to have. After that, they have a look at the rest of the plants and order some, but novelties are the number one priority.”
Perfect opportunity Still, is the trade fair Plantarium the perfect opportunity to see what’s new and available? Verbeek: „This trade show does offer a good overview of what’s out there. On the other hand, many of the so-called new varieties on display are not new to us. This is partly due to the fact that we have a lot of regular suppliers that let us have previews of their new products. That stands to reason, as they have to know if there’s any real
OPINION
’For us, Plantarium is the place to be’ Rijnbeek en Zn, based in Boskoop in the Netherlands, uses Plantarium as platform to reveal its new range to growers and traders. „We attend several trade shows, but Plantarium is the place to be as far as new introductions are concerned. There are two reasons for this”, states Arno Rijnbeek. „Firstly, Plantarium is an inter-
interest in what they are currently developing.” The previews given by growers are not the only reason that many of the novelties are old news to Verbeek. „Some new varieties are not new at all. Many of them have been available for at least a year. If you stick the label ’new’ on something, it has to be genuinely new, in my opinion. A product that’s been available – limited or not – for a year or even longer, cannot be new.”
national trade show. This means we can show our new varieties to a wide audience. The only other trade fair that stands comparison is the IPM in Essen, Germany. This brings me to reason number two: the IPM opens its doors in January, which is not a good time of the year for our products. We go there, sure, but there are few new varieties in Essen.” The vast majority of the new introductions exhibited by Rijnbeek en Zn are genuinely new. „We have given previews to a small number of our customers, though. The feedback is important to us. Sometimes I take a client to walk with me among the trial fields with potential novelties, just to hear what he thinks. I might absolutely love a new plant, but if my clients don’t like it, there’s no point in marketing that plant. Getting feedback and putting our feelers out, that’s vital in ascertaining whether a plant is a potential winner or not.”
4
Get together Verbeek feels the organization of the trade show should run a tighter ship and check all novelties to see if they’re genuinely new. „It wouldn’t look good if the award for best new variety goes to some plant that’s

no vations that specific product.” Van Haaster puts his own words immediately into perspective. „Of course, a plant has to be healthy and robust and have a certain appeal. Take the Hydrangea Endless Summer, for instance. That plant was promoted extensively. True enough, sales were good for a few years, but now demand is decreasing rapidly. Perhaps most people have one by now and the market has reached saturation point? A plant that seems to be more and more in demand as time goes by, on the other hand, is Geranium ’Rozanne’. Sometimes it is very hard to tell why some plants fade away into obscurity and others keep on shining.”
Innovative
Do all new varieties on display deserve the label ’new’?
been available for quite a while.” Buyers working for Intratuin, a large chain of garden centers, have also seen many of the introductions on display before. Nick Henneken of Intratuin Zoetermeer: „Still, at Plantarium you can check out all new varieties, even if they’re not that new. Our buyers are scouting for new plants all year round, but people working for the individual branches are not. That is why Plantarium is a perfect opportunity to get our central buyers and people from several local branches together, look at all the novelties and decide together which of those we would like to sell in our stores.” Wholesale merchants use Plantarium in the same way, for that matter. Verbeek: „It is a good opportunity to show some of our regular customers
what’s available at the moment. Besides, during the trade show they can see and judge the actual plants for themselves, which is much easier than trying to assess them on the basis of photographs.”
Sales promotion Not all new varieties prove to be winners. „On one hand, a plant has to appeal to people, but we find that sales promotion, on the other hand, is equally as important”, states Koos van Haaster, ceo of De Bosrand, a chain of garden centers. „It doesn’t matter how good a product is, without sales promotion it won’t take off. You’ll have to rely on impulse buying. If you have a nationwide advertising campaign, however, people will come to your store to buy
Verbeek can offer some explanation as to why some new varieties never really take off: „Not all new plants are innovative. If a plant only differs slightly from existing varieties, no one will see it as a novelty and it probably won’t be a success.” This is why Verbeek would like a more strict selection procedure for new introductions before they hit the market. „A new variety should truly be a new variety. And the new part about it should chiefly be the way it looks; the visual characteristics. Plants that don’t suffer from certain diseases might be of interest to growers, but consumers won’t see those plants as new varieties.” A new plant has to yield a cash return in the first years after introduction. That’s when the development costs and the licensing fee have to be paid. Verbeek: „This means that a new variety usually is at least €0,20 more expensive than similar plants. Customers will only pay the extra money if they perceive it as a novelty. Take Photinia serratifolia Crispy Pink (’Oploo5’), for instance. This Photinia clearly differs from all other Photinias. This new variety truly deserves to be labeled ’new’.” < De Boomkwekerij 17A (21 augustus 2015)

Plantarium: launch pad for novelties What do you think of Plantarium as a launch pad for new varieties? That’s the question we asked several non-Dutch professionals that specialize in the introduction and marketing of novelties. The answer: Plantarium is up there with the best.
There are several licensing agencies in the Netherlands. Each year they send in a large number of novelties to be judged at Plantarium. Other countries have similar agencies, and some of them are regular exhibitors at Plantarium, such as Blooms of Bressingham (United Kingdom) and Anthony Tesselaar International (Australia). And those that don’t have their own booth will often at least visit this trade fair, like PlantHaven International (USA) does. Plantarium wants to play a leading role in the world of new introductions. The competition from other trade fairs is stiff, though. Furthermore, a lot of novelties shown at Plantarium have already had their debuts somewhere else, like IPM (Essen, Germany), Salon du Végétal (Angers, France) or the National Plant Show (Stoneleigh Park, United Kingdom). When a new variety has had its first showing on another continent, it may take a while before it is brought before the Plantarium judges. Naturally, it works the other way around as well: a novelty that’s been revealed at Plantarium may be old news by the time it reaches other trade fairs, specially those on other continents. Still, the question remains whether Plantarium stands out from the competition.
Excellent opportunities Phillip Townshend, global operations director of Anthony Tesselaar International, feels Plantarium is very important to the introduction of new varieties or concepts. Anthony Tesselaar International is based in Australia, but is a regular exhibitor at Plantarium. Townshend rates the Dutch trade fair with the likes of the
6
IPM in Germany and Cultivate, the American trade show. All three are excellent opportunities for breeders and their agents to show their new products to a gathering of horticultural professionals, in Townshend’s opinion. Visitors to these events tend to come from all over the world, and this trend of internationalization has increased over the last few years. Because of this, exhibitors like Anthony Tesselaar International can use trade fairs to come into direct contact with horticultural heavyweights from distant regions, people that otherwise might be hard to reach. What novelty is launched on what trade show, depends on the kind of visitor that particular event attracts. Townshend: „Different audiences and different shows or regions respond differently to the introduction of new varieties, and offers must be tailored according to the prevailing market preferences.”
Too many medals Plantarium is highly rated by Anthony Tesselaar International because of ’the diversity and quality of the audience attending the show’, as Townshend puts it. „Our only criticism would be that the show awards too many medals, has too many categories for new introductions. This dilutes the prestige or value of the awards, with multiple gold, silver and bronze awards given to various products.” Townshend thinks the focus on continual new releases each year also means that many products identified as new or innovative the previous year are all too soon forgotten before they can reach their true market potential.
Part of a number of ways Blooms of Bressingham represents the interests of a diverse group of breeders from various countries and deploys activities all over the world, including North-America, Australia and Europe. Alistair Lorimer works for the European branch and is the contact for licensees, growers and retailers working with garden plants. Lorimer stresses the fact that trade shows are just part of a number of ways to promote a new plant. There are trials, social media, blogs, e-mails and face-to-face meetings. When Blooms of Bressingham launches a new variety on a trade fair, the company will make use of Plantarium as well as the American trade show Cultivate. „The National Plant Show in the UK is also useful”, says Lorimer. Which trade fairs Blooms will choose, varies per introduction. „We make choices depending on the availability of supply.” As many of his colleagues, Lorimer has seen his share of novelties, at various trade shows. One of the things he has noticed is that there is one category of new plants that is sought after especially: plants that perform both for the grower and the end user. „The end user wants plants that give great results for little input”, Lorimer states - and not for the first time, as this is one of his hobby horses.
Extremely important In 1997, Geoff and Maureen Needham founded PlantHaven International in Santa Barbara (California, USA). They were convinced breeders were in dire need of good advice, and of someone to act on their behalf on the North-American market. Nowadays PlantHaven is an internation-

ally operating enterprise that assists breeders from all over the world in the marketing of new varieties. Maureen Needham considers trade fairs as ’extremely important’ to successfully introducing novelties. „As there are so many new introductions, great new varieties can get overlooked if not displayed well and shouted about.”
Flower trials Needham also considers flower trials a great way to launch new perennials, shrubs and annuals. She refers primarily to the American counterpart of the Dutch-German FlowerTrials: the Californian Spring
Trials (CAST). These trials are extra important because of the ’home advantage’, as PlantHaven is an American company. „We welcome many international visitors, so it is no longer a US orientated trade show”, says Needham. Another important American event for PlantHaven is the trade show Cultivate in Ohio. As far as Europe is concerned, Needham likes the FlowerTrials in Holland and Germany. In addition she mentions the IPM and, of course, Plantarium. Those European events are great opportunities for European licensees of PlantHaven International to show off their new varieties. „A case in point is the Dümmen Orange display at the week 24 FlowerTrials
where our new Gaillardia and Leucanthemum were showcased this year. Another company that showcases our new plants is Vitro Westland at Plantarium.” Needham speaks highly of Plantarium and its timing. „It is a great time of year to showcase perennials as they have been grown naturally, without forcing. This gives a true impression of the plant. Additionally Plantarium attracts an important visitor set who are the decision makers in our industry globally.” When asked if she has noticed any interesting developments during her trade fair visits in the last few years, Needham needs little time to think. „The improved quality of the

new introductions. Real breeding breakthroughs are happening.” Not surprisingly, perhaps. „Growers are demanding plants that really are improvements.”
Show when available English based Plants For Europe (PFE) was founded in 2003 by Graham Spencer, providing „the first truly independent pan-European breeders rights agency service for garden plants.” For Spencer trade fairs are an international shop window and a great opportunity to promote new varieties. „But it is important not to display a plant until there is availability of young plants or finished plants. A plant is only ’new’ once and you only get one chance to make the most of novelty.” For Spencer fairs like Plantarium, IPM, National Plant Show are important as well as some of the retail shows, like Chelsea Flower Show (UK). „FlowerTrials are also incredibly important. There is more scope to show all varieties, not just the latest introductions.” About Plantarium Spencer says: „It’s the best show
8
for reaching Dutch growers. And that remains the biggest market in Europe.” Plant competitions are according to him useful, as they can help growers to make choices and highlight the best varieties. But he worries that plant competitions are becoming beauty pageants as they are not a substitute for proper testing in nursery or garden.
Keeping finger on pulse Plants Management Australia PMA is another Australian based licensing and marketing company. It manages the protection and introduction of new plant varieties across the globe. The PMA team attends multiple trade shows across the globe. „We find them crucial to keeping our finger on the pulse in terms of what is new in the horticultural industry”, says Managing Director Chris Sargent. In his opinion international trade shows are a melting pot of new ideas and bring the best of what the industry has to offer together under one roof. „They are the ideal forum to launch new novelties as we can
reach a high proportion of company decision makers at once. Whilst showing PMA’s new plant innovations to international trade markets, the additional opportunity to import and represent other new innovations for breeders around the world back into both Australia and New Zealand is a major part of our business.” In The Netherlands PMA visits Plantarium regularly. „This is always a great show to attend as it draws together industry specialists from all over the world. It has proven to be a very successful launch platform for key varieties of ours in the past.” He mentions the European launch of Salvia ’Ember’s Wish’ in 2014 as a great example. „We were delighted ’Ember’s Wish’ earned a silver medal at the show and this accolade has since provided us with an important platform from which to grow the popularity of the plant.” PMA pays also regular visits to IPM in Germany, The Chelsea Flower Show in the UK, Cultivate in Ohio, USA, The Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show in Australia and New Zealand „Just to name a few”, adds Sargent. <

m graag echte nieuwigheden zien mer is natuurlijk heel veel promotie gemaakt.
Nieuw of vernieuwend

Nederland telt ettelijke licentiebureaus.

Over Plantarium zelf is zij bijzonder positief.
