MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD CHAIRMAN I’d like to welcome everyone into the New Year, and hope everyone has a renewed sense of energy to tackle 2013. The BCLNA has lined up some great events this year, so please take a look at the calendar on page 4 & 5 and find something to take part in this year. There are 20 new landscape-related items listed on the calendar, as well as five commodity meetings which will now include education workshops. The BC Home & Garden Show is a cost effective and fun way to promote your business for a reduced rate and take part in a lively event. The BCLNA fundraising auction is always a good time, and this year’s Casino Theme will surely be no different. I encourage you to take part in the educational workshops and commodity meetings this year. It’s a great way to meet new people in the industry and gain insight from your peers.
This year commemorates 60 years of the BCLNA working for its members to establish a strong industry, and professional standards. Each issue of HortWest will highlight the past six decades with photographs and a timeline of events that shaped that decade. We hope you enjoy taking a look back into our history! I encourage all of you to really distinguish your company as an industry leader this year by engaging in professional development and education. By committing to education and certification for yourself, and your staff, you are setting a higher standard for professional and personal growth. Your clients will notice it, and your employees will appreciate it. ✿

Q: What do you do and where do you do it? A: We do landscape design, installation, and maintenance. We also provide arborist reports. Our main area of work is South Surrey, Delta, and Langley. Q: How long have you been a BCLNA member? A: I’ve been a member since 2006. Q: What attracted you to become a member? A: The networking with fellow landscapers was the main draw. This has turned out to be a wealth of information and help to me as a small business just starting out. As well, all the educational opportunities have been great. It is important to keep up-todate with new goings-on in the industry and BCLNA is a good way to do that.

Q: How are you involved in BCLNA? What do you enjoy about being the LAG chair? What do you do? A: I am the chairperson of the Landscape Commodity and as such, the voice of landscapers to the board of directors. This has been very interesting so far, learning about all the different areas of the horticultural business and trying to come up with new ideas and solutions to address the issues and problems that arise. Getting to meet more of my fellow landscapers is a bonus – I like meeting people and this has been a great opportunity for that.
We Offer Full Plant Service
Q: What advice would you offer the industry with regard to development, standards and customer service? A: Keeping up with current trends is important for growing your business. Being able to offer your clients the comfort of knowing you are a dynamic, professional company can only be beneficial to your business. Using the current industry standards and offering the latest services helps to increase the profile of the industry as well. ✿

THAT WAS THEN... Organizations, like families and individuals, change over time. Our memories are inevitably selective and events are remembered by some, and forgotten by others. Who was it who said, “Ah, the past, it never was as good or as bad as we seem to think it was”?
Ten years ago, the BCLNA published a great retrospective of the Association. As we move through 2013, the 60th anniversary of organized horticulture in BC, we will offer a much more modest snapshot of some highlights and images from each of the past six decades.

INDUSTRY BITS NEW EXAM FOR LAWN CARE TECHNICIANS
The Landscape Industry Certified Lawn Care Technician exam is the newest exam available to individuals across Canada and the USA. This credential is directly linked to the practice of the profession and reflects what you should already know as a lawn care practitioner. Like all of the Landscape Industry Certified designations, this exam is based on the principles of validity (how close it relates to the job), reliability (how objective the test is) and defensibility (how well it holds up to scrutiny). The first step in this is always development of an occupational standard. Using a panel of subject matter experts, from as wide a cross-section of industry as possible.
The exam consists of a 100 multiple choice questions focusing on the following topics: • Turfgrass, weed, pest, and disease identification • Pest control strategies, economic impact thresholds, and cultural practices • Ability to read labels and guidelines and calculate area to be treated (basic math skills) • Basic soil science and soil sampling • Application techniques • Environmental and weather impact of applied products • Regulatory compliance
Exams will be available across the country as part of scheduled written test dates.
• Proper loading, accident procedures, reports, and spill

2012 ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP AWARD The 2012 Environmental Stewardship Award was presented during the Industry Christmas Party on December 6, 2012. Sheldon Ridout of The Silent Gardener Ltd. took the first place award, with Honorable Mention going to The Silent Crew. Sheldon Ridout was able to demonstrate an extensive scope of practices such as noise reduction, IPM, biological control, use of organic fertilizers, composting, and staff education. The Silent Gardener Ltd.’s commitment to environmental stewardship over the past 12 years in the Vancouver area is truly a great achievement.
The Silent Crew, who took Honorable Mention demonstrated innovation by the use of tricycles in order to reduce emissions that motorized vehicles would cause, while reducing noise pollution. The Environmental Stewardship Awards was based on a points system which includes some of the following criteria: reduced environmental impact, improved selection and use of non-invasive plant material, unique concepts and innovations, and education. Thank you to judges Rod Nateros, Michelle Nakano, and Paulus Vrijmoed for reviewing the projects. ✿

Successful Business Networking, A Key Strategy for SMEs and Larger Businesses
Significantly Improve Your Recruiting Success Using Behavioral Interviewing Techniques
• What does a great networker do? • How to become known as the best in your market, (Review other small businesses have transformed their businesses into “The Talk of the Town, How do I spread the good news about my business?) • Building successful referrals/relationship selling attracting and retaining prosperous customers. • Effective branding & getting your brand out to the right customers. • How do I teach my employees to network and promote (sell) my business? • How do I make a lasting impression on a potential client? (residential, commercial, LA.) • The do’s and don’ts of networking.
Roy Prevost is unique in North America in the area of preparing small business for the New Economy. Roy is a management consultant and strategist with more than 25 years of experience in all facets of marketing, wholesale, retail, and manufacturing industry. He has presented more than 250 workshops as well as guest lectured at Simon Fraser University on the Future Consumer. As a customer service strategist and small business crusader, Roy has contributed to The Financial Post, The National Post, CTV, Shaw Cable, Rogers Cable and community newspapers across North America.
The best predictor of future performance is past performance in similar situations. Research tells us that 80 percent of job candidates live remarkably consistent lives. The BDI interview is a structured pattern of jobrelated questions designed to probe the candidate’s past behaviour in specific situations and provide the interviewer with enough information to make the right hiring decision. This organized, structured approach provides each candidate with equal opportunity in the job interview. Questions are prepared in advance and all candidates are asked the same questions. This process will allow you to: • Match changing job requirements with the most qualified internal or external candidate. • Decrease costs associated with bad hires by targeting the competencies for success in a job. • Ensure consistency of evaluation by assessing all candidates against the same standards. • Improve the transparency of the selection process by clearly communicating the required competencies to the candidate being interviewed.
Seminar participants will learn to get a STAR answer from candidates (Situation, Task, Action & Results). This answer will provide detailed, factual, and specific information with which to assess a candidate’s suitability for the position. This seminar is highly participatory with dozens of examples provided by the facilitator and the opportunity for participant questions. Sharon Smith-Swan leads by example. A powerful public speaker, she brings extensive experience in researching, designing and delivering presentations to a variety of companies and nonprofit organizations. Keynotes are custom designed for each client, situation, and audience. Sharon’s quick wit and sense of humor and her ability to involve each person in the audience make her a role model for Speaking With Confidence. Motivate employees to manage change, give effective sales presentations, deliver superior customer service – and contribute to your organization’s success. ✿ HortWest February 2013 E-Issue |
