Roy Garcia
A Journey to Strengthen Culinary Skills
At 23, Bronx native Roy Garcia ventured out and opened his first restaurant. He had plenty of experience working in the restaurant business from the time he was 12 years old but, he came to realize that experience does not guarantee success. After only four years of operation, Roy closed the doors to his business and decided he needed to back up his experience with an education.
In 2018, Roy completed his High School Equivalency (HSE) diploma while working as a manager in his uncle’s restaurant. The following year, he enrolled in the Culinary Arts Certificate Program at the Division of Continuing Education and Workforce Development (CEWD) at Hostos Community College. By Summer 2019, Roy was not only equipped with his HSE, he had a Culinary Arts Certificate and Food Protection Certificate from CEWD. Roy did his training for the Hostos Culinary Arts Certificate at the Food Arts Center (FAC) at Fedcap, a state-of-the-art kitchen and event center in Midtown Manhattan. Hostos rents the kitchen from Fedcap Rehabilitation Services, Inc. While training there, Wil Edwards, the Director of the FAC, recognized Roy’s talents, work ethic and passion for the culinary field and reached out to him regarding the possibility of employment with the organization. Roy submitted an impressive resume. He was hired and began his new job in November 2019. Currently 30 years old, Roy works at the FA as a culinary instructor and sous-chef for their culinary vocational training program and their in-house catering and events company, respectively. He is also assisting with First Course NYC, a 14-week culinary apprentice program sponsored by NYC’s Small Business Services agency (SBS),in collaboration with Hostos Community College and the FAC.
Roy does not see a future for himself outside of the culinary industry.
Completing the Culinary Arts Certificate Program at Hostos not only gave me the education I needed to fine tune my expertise in food production and recipe creation, it gave me the opportunity to gain employment in a place where I can continue to cultivate my culinary skills. My goal is to have my work appreciated and recognized and Hostos offered the perfect pathway to get me there. ” “
