Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) Program

The increase in longevity and changes in the health care system has created an increased need for educated and skilled Nursing Assistants. This program gives you an excellent opportunity to acquire the necessary occupational and English literacy skills required for CNA. Two hours of class time will be dedicated to improving study skills to ensure your overall success in the classroom and in the field. The CNA profession is ideal for people seeking flexible hours working in nursing homes, hospitals, doctors’ offices and health care facilities.

Program includes: Anatomy & Physiology, Fundamentals of Patient Care and clinical experience in a residential health care facility. Phlebotomy Technician Certificate

This introductory course on the basic procedures used for obtaining blood from veins and capillaries is available to students who have a current NYS Certified Nurse Aide certificate, RN or LPN license. Students will learn the skills and responsibilities of the professional phlebotomist. Topics include standard precautions, collecting blood specimens for diagnosis and treatment, performing capillary punctures and more. This course is a combination of theory and practical training that includes 2 hours of class time dedicated to improving study skills to ensure your overall success in the classroom and in the field. Live venipunctures, conducted in class, will be a component of this course. Participating students and volunteer subjects must sign an “Acknowledgment of Risk” form. Upon successful completion, students will be eligible to take the National Healthcareer Association (NHA) Certification exam. NHA exam fee is included in tuition. Electrocardiogram (ECG/EKG) Technicians prepare patients for testing on ECG machines and Holter monitors. The technician takes patient history and administers the actual ECGs for physicians to interpret. ECG Telemetry Technician Certificate

This course is designed to enhance the curriculum of current ECG students or those already EKG certified and is available to all RN’s, LPN’s, LVN’s, Medical Assistants and Certified Nursing Assistants. Students will learn to interpret rhythms such as Atrial Fibrillation, Ventricular Tachycardia, Premature Ventricular and Atrial contractions, Type I, II and III heart blocks. The ECG course will cover the entire anatomy and physiology of the heart muscle and delve into the rhythmicity and excitability of cardiac tissue. As a member of the patient care team, the technician is responsible and accountable for proper notification of changes in cardiac rhythms and rates, which may necessitate treatment. Therefore, to ensure your success in the classroom and in the field, 2 hours of class time will be dedicated to improving study skills. State Exam fee and textbooks not included in tuition.

Patient Care Technician (PCT) Certificate

The Patient Care Technician is a multi-disciplinary technical worker trained to provide basic nursing assistant care as well as other skilled functions. The role of the Patient Care Technician includes duties traditionally performed by the staff from several different departments such as nursing, phlebotomy, EKG and respiratory. This program not only builds upon the basic nursing aid skills, but also includes 2 hours of class time dedicated to improving study skills to ensure your overall success in the classroom and in the field. This is the latest trend in health care reengineering. National Healthcareer Association (NHA) and State exam fees are included in tuition. Textbooks are not included in tuition.

Home Health Aide Certificate Program (HHA)

There is an ongoing demand for qualified Home Health Aides/Personal Care Aides to work in clients’ private homes and in assisted living facilities. Candidates must read at 6th grade level as determined by an assessment test. HHA duties include assisting clients in personal care, escorting clients to medical appointments, shopping, paying bills, etc. Course hours include 85 classroom hours which includes 1 hour study skills, plus 5 hours of CPR training. Textbook is included in tuition.

Certified Home Health Aide Training and English as a Second Language (ESL) Program

This FREE program is designed to provide beginners and/or low intermediate English language learners with the knowledge, practical skills, certification and English language skills required to become Certified Home Health Aides (HHAs).

HHAs assist patients in the activities of daily living and provide basic routine care. These activities can include providing assistance with eating, bathing, brushing teeth, administering medications, changing dressings/ bandages, checking a patient’s temperature and pulse rate, as well as helping with artificial limbs or walking aids.

Home healthcare agencies employ most HHAs by assigning them to patients’ private homes. HHAs can also work in continuing care facilities, nursing homes and assisted living centers. Supportive services and direct job placement will be provided.

Clinical Medical Assistant (CMA)

The Clinical Medical Assistant program combines 136 hours of classroom training along with 120 hours externship to prepare students for employment as professional Clinical Medical Assistants dedicated to patient care management. Graduates of the program will be equipped to assist physicians with examinations, treatments, take medical histories, vital signs, phlebotomies, ekg’s and other clinical procedures. In addition, two hours of class time will be dedicated to improving math skills relevant to the program. Students will also learn the basic medical laws and ethics as they relate to OSHA and the HIPAA standards that ensure in the work place and patient privacy. The goal is to develop competent entry level medical assistants in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills) and affective (behavior) learning domains.

Graduates will receive a certificate from Hostos after completing 120 externship hours. Students will also earn up to 2 college credits that can be applied toward an Associate Degree in Business/Office Technology. See page 8 for details. Students will take the National Healthcareer Association (NHA) exam on the last day of class (3 hour exam). Textbook, supplies, CPR and CMA exam fee included in tuition. Dental Assistant Certificate Program

Local Anesthesia & Nitrous Oxide Administration Certificate Program

Dental assistants perform a variety of tasks including patient care, taking and processing x-rays and scheduling appointments. This course will familiarize students with the pre-clinical area, the history of dentistry and the many functions of the dental office.

Students will learn about the oral cavity and related structures, how to prepare patients for various types of dental treatments, clean and sterilize dental instruments and assist the dentist and/or dental hygienist by performing tasks such as using suction devices, properly noting dental charts and dealing with emergency situations. This program is ideal for students seeking entry-level employment as Dental Assistants while pursuing a career as a Dental Hygienist.

Included in the course is 1 hour remedial English. Tuition includes textbooks, lab materials and CPR.

Dental Front Office Administration with Billing & Coding Certificate Program

This course prepares students for an administrative position in the dental front office. Learn basic administrative functions from composing and typing letters to managing office projects. Students will be introduced to dental terminology and the anatomy of the oral cavity in order to properly document dental charts and gain an understanding of dental services provided, as they relate to billing and coding to insurance companies. Learn to maintain accounts receivable, accounts payable and financial records for the dental practice. Gain job search strategies while building your skills for employment. Included in the course is 1 hour remedial math. Tuition includes textbook.

The Department of Dental Hygiene at Hostos offers the Local Anesthesia/Nitrous Oxide Analgesia Certificate Program in compliance with New York State law, in order to facilitate the NYS licensed dental hygienist’s application for a Restricted Certificate in Local Infiltration Anesthesia/Nitrous Oxide Analgesia. Registered Dental Hygienists are now permitted, under the direct supervision of a dentist, to administer intra oral and infiltration anesthesia or nitrous oxide analgesia to patients 18 years of age or older.

This 45 hour fully approved course satisfies the didactic and clinical requirements for certification. The course will also include 2 classroom hours dedicated to improving English and vocabulary skills to ensure success in the field. Upon successful completion of the course, the dental hygienist will be able to apply for certification through the NYS Education Department. Clinical skills practice will require students to participate as a patient and operator. Individuals who are pregnant or have uncontrollable high blood pressure are precluded from participating in this course. All students are required to take and record blood pressure and follow infection control standards. Full attendance will be required for both didactic and clinical classes. The state exam fee is not included in the tuition.

Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Certificate Program

The EMT-Basic program will provide you with the necessary skills to administer emergency pre-hospital care in common situations such as heart attacks, strokes and automobile accidents. Emphasis is placed on recognizing the symptoms of illness and injury and the application of proper procedures for emergency care.

The curriculum follows the guidelines established by the New York State Department of Health, Bureau of Emergency Medical Service, and includes Basic Life Saving (BLS) trauma care, medical/environmental operations and 7 practical exercises: patient assessment, airway management and oxygen administration, bleeding control and fracture management, traction splinting, spinal immobilization, shock management and defibrillation.

The course is further enhanced by dedicating 2 hours of class tie to improving study skills to ensure your overall success in the classroom and in the field. Students will take the NYS Emergency Medical Services written examination on the last day of class. State exam*, textbooks and EMT Equipment Package are included in tuition.

Medical Administrative Assistant (MAA) Certificate Program

This program is designed to provide students the knowledge and skills required to perform the administrative functions of an entry level medical assistant in a variety of healthcare settings such as, medical offices, clinics and ambulatory care facilities.

Students will learn how to manage patient scheduling, maintain patient records, perform billing and coding duties, assist physicians with examinations and prepare patients for laboratory and diagnostic imaging procedures.

HIV Counselor Certificate Program

The role of the HIV Counselor is to enhance the well-being of people impacted by HIV. Students will obtain skills to identify high risk populations and manage barriers by effectively linking clients to appropriate resources.

The HIV Counselor course requires 40 didactic classroom education hours, plus 80 hours of clinical experience. The course is further enhanced by dedicating 4 hours of class time to improving study skills to ensure your overall success in the classroom and in the field. Recovery Coach Program

Recovery Coaches support positive change by helping individuals re-entering society from treatment or the criminal justice system. Our goal is to assist in the avoidance of relapse, the building of community support for recovery and cultivating life goals such as relationships, work and education. Focusing on building the client’s strengths, coaches do not address past traumas, but rather provide expertise on future achievement. Similar to Life and Business Coaching, Recovery Coaching (also known as peer mentoring), provides assistance to clients in accessing clinical services. Recovery Coaching is non-clinical and does not involved the diagnosis or treatment of addiction or any mental health issues, as is the case for licensed addiction counselors. Textbook is included in tuition.

Ethics Consideration for Recovery Coaches is a three-day training designed to help Recovery Coaches develop guidelines for making ethical decisions. This course prepares Recovery Coaches to maintain integrity and professionalism when serving others.

This course introduces students to the fundamental concepts of the profession, principles of patient care, pharmacy law, pharmacology, human anatomy, pharmaceutical mathematics, medical terminology and pathophysiology. Students will learn about the top medications dispensed in the United States and will be introduced to the basic concepts of pharmacy calculations. The course is further enhanced by dedicating 2 hours of class time to improving study skills to ensure your overall success in the classroom and in the field. Upon successful completion of the program, students will be prepared to take the Pharmacy Technician Certification Examination (PTCE), a nationally recognized certification administered by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB).

Textbooks and national exam fee are not included in tuition. All students must purchase a lab coat prior to class start date (estimated cost of $15). Students with criminal convictions or drug use do not qualify for program.

Central Sterile Processing Program

The program curriculum is designed to prepare individuals for the field of Sterile Processing and Central Service Supply. Students will develop skills necessary to properly disinfect, prepare, process, store, and issue both sterile and nonsterile supplies and equipment for patient care. Students will also learn to operate sterilizing units and monitor effectiveness of the sterilization process. The program is comprised of three Modules.

Module One - Introduce the primary responsibility of a Central Sterile Processing Technician. Emphasis is placed on preparation, storage and distribution of instruments, supplies and equipment, quality assurance and inventory management. Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate competence in sterile processing techniques.

Module Two - Emphasis is placed on basic human anatomy, infection control, aseptic technique, sterile processing, decontamination and disinfection. Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate competence in sterile processing techniques.

Module Three - Provide job seeking skills and an overview of theoretical knowledge in preparation for CRCST certification. Topics include test taking strategies, resume preparation and interviewing techniques. Upon completion, students will be able to complete a resume, demonstrate appropriate interview techniques and identify personal strengths and weaknesses in preparation for employment. Students will also demonstrate knowledge of industry standards and practices needed to pass the CRCST exam. The three Modules must be successfully completed prior to the mandatory clinical 400-hour Externship in order to earn certification, as required by the International Association of Healthcare Central Service Materiel Management (IAHCSMM). This course is further enhanced by dedicating 5 hours of class time to improving study skills to ensure overall success in the classroom and in the field.
