GALACTIC FIREWORKS originally started selling fireworks from a village store in Laughton Common, Dinnington, Nr Sheffield over 30 years ago. I don’t think you could have picked a worse location to sell fireworks, but by putting our customers first and having a knowledge and passion to supply only the very best and most exciting fireworks money can buy eventually lead this little village store to be the diamond in the Galactic Fireworks crown. This store is now what I believe to be the BEST FIREWORKS SHOP IN THE WHOLE OF THE UK, BAR NONE. It still humbles me how many people make the journey from all over the UK to see us in all of our retail stores. I really can’t thank you enough for the passion and effort you yourselves put in to get the very best pyro available. You also should realise you make our day too. We have obviously expanded over the years and now also have 3 further retail shops at Retford, South Elmsall and Ripley. Due to more and more people now buying online, plus of course the fact I love setting off and filming pyro means we have now become one of the UK’s biggest online retailers of fireworks.

But this doesn’t mean any of our principles have changed, in fact, we strive even more to get across our personal service and involvement with every firework we sell. NIGEL TURVER I LOVE FIREWORKS, it’s as simple as that! I am now 48 years old with a terrible memory and yet I remember going into Robinson’s newsagents on School Road Crookes and seeing the big wooden tea chest with pre decimal prices on (yes I must have been only 5), there I stood looking in awe at these wondrous magical items like Traffic Lights and Snow Storm from Standard Fireworks. I also remember my teenage years just as I hit 13 years old the legal age of buying fireworks going up to 16 “DAMN!”. This didn’t stop me going to Redgate’s on the Moor and looking in the big glass cabinets at the varying sizes of the mesmerizing fireworks on show. I suppose now that is why I still just love just feeling and touching these wonderful things and even have a nice little collection of things from the old days myself. Anyway I still love all fireworks from the smallest Catherine wheel to the biggest single ignition box. Irrelevant of size I like to see a firework that makes you look and watch with your heart racing while producing wondrous effects that reflect in the size and the price that you have paid for the firework. Hi, i’m James and i’ve been lucky enough to have grown up around my dads firework business so have been involved right from a child! have also been to China twice and loved it there, seeing the sights and of course lots and lots of pyro. TODD WHITLEY Hi, I’m Todd, I help out Nigel and the team around the busy bonfire season to simply enable me to buy more pyro for my bonfire night fireworks extravaganza! Last year I had so many fireworks we ended up firing them at a local pub which was fantastic, they had never seen such quality pyro in their life before! When you buy from Galactic you really do enter into a world of pyro like no other provider anywhere in the UK.

TYPES OF

FIREWORKS MINE A mine is a ground firework that expels stars and/ or other garnitures into the sky from the ground upwards. Shot from a mortar, a mine consists of a canister with the lift charge on the bottom with the effects placed on top. Mines can project small reports, serpents, small shells, as well as just stars. One of the best mines i’ve ever seen is the Diamond Mine that we sell for under £10.

ROMAN CANDLE A Roman candle is a long tube containing several large stars, which fire at a regular interval. These are commonly arranged in fan shapes or crisscrossing shapes, at a closer proximity to the audience. Some larger Roman candles contain small shells (bombettes) rather than stars.

FOUNTAIN

WHEEL

A ground device that emits showers of sparks several feet in the air. A common fountain is the cone fountain, where the enclosing tube is in the shape of a cone.

A wheel is a stationary device that spins and creates a circular ring of fire and sparks. These are generally nailed to a pole or a tree before they are lit. You should always be careful to make sure the area is free from flammable debris before you light a wheel as the sparks can carry 3 metres or more.

ROCKET

SPARKLER

This is a pyrotechnic firework made out of a paper tube packed with gunpowder that propels itself using a motor into the air in order to fly.

A stick with a coating of pyrotechnic composition that creates sparks when lit. While sparklers are generally considered safe, they are responsible for over eighty percent of the injuries due to fireworks each year!

Types of rockets include skyrockets, which have a stick to provide stability during airborne flight. NEVER fire a rocket with a missing or broken stick!

CAKE A cake is an item that has a single fuse which once lit goes on to light several tubes in a sequence, these fire a series of aerial effects. Tube diameters can range in size from 6mm to 30 mm, and a single cake can have up to 5000 shots. The variety of effects within individual cakes is often such that they defy descriptive titles and are instead given cryptic names such as “Crimson Dynamite”, “Pyrotastic”, “Hercules”, and “Magical Palms”, to name but a few. Some of the heaviest cakes that we sell can weigh up to 10Kg’s each.

EFFECTS STAR

A small pellet of composition that produces a pyrotechnic effect. Stars are used in cakes, rockets, roman candles, and fountains to produce streaks or light, pulses, long golden tails, and other aerial effects. A single firework could contain several hundred stars.

SALUTE OR REPORT

Fireworks intended to produce a loud report rather than a visual effect. Many fireworks produce both a report and effects. Titanium may be added to the flash powder mix to produce a cloud of bright sparks around the flash. Salutes are commonly used in large quantities during finales to create intense noise and brightness. Can also be referred to as maroons.

CHRYSANTHMUM

It has a spherical break of coloured stars, similar to a peony, but with stars that leave a visible trail of sparks.

WILLOW

It is similar to a chrysanthemum, but has less of an ongoing flare after ignition of the shell. In addition, the flame trails gradually extinguish, and in doing so, falls creating a willow branch-like effect.

FALLING LEAVES

A beautiful aerial effect that consists of glowing embers that tumble slowly in the air, flickering back and forth as they fall back to earth. The finale on our Mayhem is a typical example of this.

TOURBILLION

Another name for a serpent. A tourbillion is a type of star that spins in the sky and gives off large quantities of gold, silver, or white light. These are generally constructed as a small paper tube with holes on each end that allow it to spin.

GLITTER

A tail effect that contains flashes of light and small explosive bursts lasting several seconds.

CRACKLE EFFECT

Fireworks effects that sounds like hundred of snaps or crackles.

BROCADE

A spider like effect in the sky, much like fine lace. The brocade effect is generally a gold or silver tail effect. Most brocade effects use glitter to produce the long brocade tails.

PALM

A firework containing a relatively few large comet stars arranged in such a way as to burst with large arms or tendrils, producing a palm tree-like effect.

KAMURO

Kamuro is a Japanese word meaning “Boys Haircut” which is what this effect looks like when fully exploded in the air. A dense burst of glittering silver or gold stars which leave a heavy glitter trail and are very shiny in the night’s sky.

CROSSETTE

Crossette is an effect characterized by a “star” which quickly shoots outward in four directions from the initial comet. When multiple crossettes are fired simultaneously, the result is a mass of criss-crossing trails, hence the name “crossette”.

SPIDER

A firework containing a fast burning ailed or charcoal star that is burst very hard so that the stars travel in a straight and flat trajectory before slightly falling and burning out. This appears in the sky as a series of radial lines much like the legs of a spider.

HORSETAIL

Named for the shape of its break, this shell features heavy long-burning tailed stars that only travel a short distance from the shell burst before free-falling to the ground.

FISH

Shots that have the property of launching the flaming debris all over the sky, what gives them their uniqueness is their ability to send flares swarming in random directions.

Dear Galactic Fireworks, I am a bit of a pyromaniac and have been both organising and putting on displays for both myself and any friends that might want me to do one for them. I have heard of Galactic Fireworks but as they are Northern based I’ve never bought anything from them as its a 300 mile round trip for me but I for the first time this year decided to risk having my fireworks sent mail order. Well what can I say? Firstly you have without a doubt the best web-site in the UK. The videos that you do of the actual firework being fired are again the best! WELL, THE TWO SINGLE MOST IMPORTANT QUESTIONS THAT WE NEED TO KNOW, TO HELP YOU GET THE BEST FROM YOUR EVENING ARE SIMPLY...

1. HOW LONG DO YOU WANT IT TO LAST? I will explain why; we will start with the time factor. I can tell you from personal experience that if you are going to put on a fireworks display for Bonfire Night then a 20-minute show is just about perfect. However, if your display is for a wedding or similar celebration where the fireworks are not the main focus of the evening then a 10-minute show is more than enough. Now you may initially think that doesn’t sound long enough but I assure you just go outside tonight and sit and look up to the sky for 20 minutes and it’s definitely long enough! That said, this assumes that you are putting on a display that is not a family gathering where timing is not as essential, and often there are breaks between each firework being fired? That changes the time considerably as you might want the fireworks to last a couple of hours, two hours of constant fireworks - even to a pyromaniac like myself sounds excessive, but two hours of setting off a few fireworks with intervals in between can actually be really good fun! If that’s the case then maybe, over the two-hour time frame, you could end up setting off 30-40 fireworks.

There is no fixed time for how long a firework lasts, but we sell ones that are as short as 15 seconds all the way to ones that last as long as 3 minutes. I will say is that if I picked out 12 random fireworks then you will end up with roughly 10 minutes of burn time, and I say burn time as the actual duration of the event depends how you are setting them off. If they are all fired back to back your display will last 10 minutes. If you put a 20 second gap between each firework then the overall display time now goes to 13 minutes. So, once you decide on duration we then have to fit the fireworks to match that. If we work on me wanting a 15-minute display with a budget of £400 to spend I need approximately 18 fireworks to fill the 15 minutes, so if I divide my £400 by 18 this gives me an average of £22.22 per firework. I would then need to pick out the fireworks, or even better still, just pick out a ready made kit to suit the time and budget from the Galactic website!

2. WHAT BUDGET ARE YOU WORKING TO? One obvious consideration to this are rockets, these are quite expensive items that only last approximately 6 seconds a piece, so be careful not to go overboard with them. Also, I recommend that 20-25% of your budget should be spent on your finale as it’s essential you have a wonderful ending to your display, please be sure to take this in to account when planning the budget for your show. I have explained all this as I feel you really should understand that you really do get what you pay for with fireworks! Every year I get the same questions asked to me like, “I see you have a £500 kit with 15

fireworks in it but another company have one with 30 fireworks in it for the same money” It just doesn’t work like that!

I could sell you 120 fireworks for £120 or just 1 firework for £120! Yes that sounds stupid but it’s true, we could have 4 x Neptune Selection Boxes, each containing 30 fireworks and costing £29.99 per box. Instead we could have just one Flaming Phoenix for £129.99! The number of fireworks in a pack is completely irrelevant in relation to its value!

And, while I am on the subject of perceived value, many of our competitors will put a total number of fireworks next to a pack, but actually put in half a dozen packets of sparklers and count those as 30 fireworks! We really believe this is just a con! One more thing you should be wary of is the total number of shots in a firework. We sell the Armageddon which some people love and buy simply as it has 500 shots, however, it is nowhere near as effective as the 49 shot Sapphires for instance. Please just ask us if you want honest, unbiased information about any of our fireworks. I suppose if you’re already a customer of ours you will know most of what i’ve written here already, if not, then I will say what I always say to anyone who’s interested in buying fireworks, try us once...we will not disappoint!

When the electric match fires, the ematch sparks for only an instant. If the ematch sparks and fire does not directly hit the visco’s black powder core, the electric match may fail to ignite the firework device.

Around September in 2011 I was having a discussion with my son James saying there just isn’t anywhere that enthusiasts of category 3 fireworks (category 3 are display fireworks that you the general public can buy but they do require a 25 metre safe viewing distance) can get together and talk about their passion. I was a member of other firework forums but these tended to be for professional display operators of category 4 fireworks (used by trained individuals and only available to professional display operators), so, with that in our mind, our fireworks forum idea began to be developed! We really didn’t really know what route it was going to take at first, but within a couple of months we had decided that the forum should be an exclusive Galactic Fireworks Forum for customers and supporters of Galactic Fireworks, and all firework enthusiasts. Yes, I log on most nights, and usually its just idle chit chat about what we’re having for tea and who’s doing this and that with a bit of pyro talk thrown in for good measure, its kind of a Facebook for us pyro geeks as we also have a chat box on the forum which is ideal for this idle chit chat. BONFIRE NIGHT

In 1605 Guy Fawkes and his fellow conspirators attempted to blow up the Parliament of the United Kingdom with 36 barrels of gunpowder in the cellars of Westminster Hall. On 5 November, Fawkes was arrested and Parliament was saved. That night is now celebrated as bonfire night by filling the sky with exploding fireworks, and by burning an effigy of Guy Fawkes on a bonfire. Remember, remember the fifth of November. Gunpowder, treason, and plot. I see no reason why gunpowder treason should ever be forgot.

‘Festival of Lights’ in India Diwali is the most popular festival in India, which broadly celebrates the triumph of good over evil. Primarily symbolized in the mythological epic of Ramayana in which the Hindu God Rama defeats his demonic adversary Ravana. Customary traditions include offering prayers to the Gods in the morning and exchanging sweets with friends and neighbours. During the night the houses are adorned with small lit oil lamps and colourful lights and then the entire family participates in the display of fireworks.

Major cities around the world now host spectacular firework displays on New Year’s Eve. However in the UK it’s still not as popular as Bonfire Night. The beauty of New Years Eve is so many people all set there fireworks off simultaneously thus making it a great spectacle to behold.

GUY FAWKES (13 APRIL 1570 – 31 JANUARY 1606), ALSO KNOWN AS GUIDO FAWKES, WAS A MEMBER OF A GROUP OF PROVINCIAL ENGLISH CATHOLICS WHO PLANNED THE FAILED GUNPOWDER PLOT OF 1605. Fawkes was born and educated in York. His father died when he was eight years old, after which his mother married a recusant Catholic. Fawkes later converted to Catholicism and left for the continent, where he fought in the Eighty Years’ War on the side of Catholic Spain against Protestant Dutch reformers. When he returned to England an associate of his Thomas Wintour introduced Fawkes to Robert Catesby, who planned to assassinate King James I and restore a Catholic monarch to the throne. The first meeting of the five central conspirators took place on Sunday 20 May at an inn called the Duck and Drake, in the fashionable Strand district of London. Robert Catesby was the leader who planned to assassinate the Protestant King James and replace him with his daughter, third in the line of succession, Princess Elizabeth. One of the conspirators, Thomas Percy, was promoted in June 1604, gaining access to a house in London that belonged to John Whynniard, Keeper of the King’s Wardrobe. Fawkes was installed as a caretaker and began using the pseudonym John Johnson, servant to Percy. By December 1604 the conspirators were busy tunnelling from their rented house to the House of Lords. They ceased their efforts when, during tunnelling, they heard a noise from above. Fawkes was sent out to investigate, and returned with the news that the tenant’s widow was clearing out a nearby undercroft, directly beneath the House of Lords. The plotters purchased the lease to the room, which also belonged to John Whynniard. Unused and filthy, it was considered an ideal hiding place for the gunpowder the plotters planned to store. According to Fawkes, 36 barrels of gunpowder were brought in. Fawkes’s final role in the plot was settled during a series of meetings in October. He was to light the fuse and then escape across the Thames. The King ordered a search of the cellars as it had been brought to his attention by one of his spies that underneath Parliament there was something afoot. In the early hours of 5th November Guy was found leaving the cellar, and arrested. Inside, the barrels of gunpowder were discovered hidden under piles of firewood and coal.

Fawkes gave his name as John Johnson and was first interrogated by members of the King’s Privy Chamber, where he remained defiant, but the king ordered a more intense torture ritual, to reveal the names of his co-conspirators. The room in which Fawkes was interrogated subsequently became known as the Guy Fawkes Room. Fawkes’s signature of “Guido”, made soon after his capture, is a now famous, when you compare it to the scribble that was a scrawl post torture. Fawkes revealed his true identity on 7 November, and told his interrogators that there were five people involved in the plot to kill the King. He began to reveal their names on 8 November, and told how they intended to place Princess Elizabeth on the throne. Although it is uncertain if he was subjected to the horrors of the rack. The trial of eight of the plotters began on Monday 27 January 1606. Fawkes shared the barge from the Tower to Westminster Hall with seven of his co-conspirators. The King watching in secret, among the spectators as the Lords Commissioners read out the list of charges. Fawkes was identified as Guido Fawkes, “otherwise called Guido Johnson”. He pleaded not guilty, despite his apparent acceptance of guilt from the moment he was captured. The jury found all of the defendants guilty of high treason. The Attorney General Sir Edward Coke told the court that each of the condemned would be drawn backwards to his death, by a horse, his head near the ground. They were to be “put to death halfway between heaven and earth as unworthy of both”. Their genitals would be cut off and burnt before their eyes, and their bowels and hearts removed. They would then be decapitated, and the dismembered parts of their bodies displayed so that they might become “prey for the fowls of the air”. On 31 January 1606, Fawkes and three others – Thomas Wintour, Ambrose Rookwood, and Robert Keyes – were dragged (i.e. drawn) from the Tower and to the scaffold, Fawkes was the last one up. He asked for forgiveness from King and state, and aided by the hangman began to climb the ladder to the noose. Although weakened by torture, Fawkes managed to jump from the gallows, breaking his neck in the fall and thus avoiding the agony of the latter part of his execution. His lifeless body was nevertheless quartered and, as was the custom, his body parts were then distributed to “the four corners of the kingdom”, to be displayed as a warning to other would-be traitors. On 5 November 1605 Londoners were encouraged to celebrate the King’s escape from assassination by lighting bonfires, An Act of Parliament designated each 5 November as a day of thanksgiving for “the joyful day of deliverance”, and remained in force until 1859. Although he was only one of 13 conspirators, Fawkes is today the individual most associated with the failed Plot. In Britain, 5th November has variously been called Guy Fawkes Night, Guy Fawkes Day, Plot Night and Bonfire Night; the latter can be traced directly back to the original celebration of 5 November 1605. Fireworks accompanied bonfires from the 1650s onwards, and it became the custom to burn an effigy.

GALACTIC FIREWORKS AND MEMBERS OF THE GALACTIC FIREWORKS FORUM ARE PROUD TO SAY THAT WE PROBABLY RUN THE VERY BEST CONSUMER FIREWORKS COMPETITION IN THE UK, BAR NONE! ON THE NIGHT WE FIRE OFF APPROXIMATELY £7,000 WORTH OF PYRO, THE MONEY SPENT MAKES THE EVENING EXCITING, BUT IT’S THE WAY THE FIREWORKS ARE FIRED THAT MAKES IT A NIGHT TO REMEMBER! So, on the Saturday the 4th of October at Dinnington Rugby Club, five teams will compete at putting on the very best display they can while sticking to a strict budget of £800 (last year this was £650). All fireworks used in all displays are consumer fireworks that are bought exclusively from the Galactic Fireworks website. Each display lasts approximately 8 minutes, this keeps it short yet produces maximum impact for the budget they are working to. There will be a short break of 3-4 minutes between each display to catch your breath. We predict the first of the competition displays to be fired at 8:30pm with the professional display being fired at 9:30pm

It’s really not just a case of ‘right let’s go spend £800’, it is down to the 5 teams of 3 people who really try their upmost to put on a display that will blow the audience away! The thoughts and ideas of just what to fire and how to fire it are so important to each team member. Galactic Fireworks will complete the evening with a few of there famous experiments firing certain fireworks off in multiples at around 9:30pm after the 5 teams have competed. This event is completely free of charge but we do allow Dinnington Rugby club to charge a parking fee which all goes to the running and upkeep of this great venue.

5. IT IS ILLEGAL FOR SHOPS TO SELL FIREWORKS WITHOUT AN APPROPRIATE LICENCE

Shopkeepers must also display a notice for customers, explaining the law.

STORING FIREWORKS SOME HELP AND ADVICE: THERE ARE TWO CLASSIFICATIONS FOR FIREWORKS 1.4G AND 1.3G Almost everything we sell at Galactic is 1.4G as it is close to impossible to store 1.3G as they can only be kept in their place of use for a maximum of 3 days! You will find the odd item available from us that is available for pick-up on pre order 1.3G, however we are proud to say 98% of our fireworks are 1.4G meaning you the consumer need only follow the regulations below.

So as you can see its really hard to ever get over the 50kg limit never mind the 250kg one. The limits are actually very fair and quite liberal for the fireworks that you will buy. Also I should add please don’t store a mixture of 1.3G & 1.4G, as then the whole lot is classed as 1.3G and we don’t want that. I suggest if you do have any 1.3G keep that to 5kgs NEC at a different storage location.

The weights that you can store of fireworks as specified below do not mean the gross weight. It refers to the NEC weight (NEC standing for Net Explosive Content, sometimes also listed on the box as NEQ) For example, a firework may weigh 5kg however the NEC may only be 0.5kg. It is very rare that the gross weight and NEC is not displayed on the fireworks outer carton box, but if this is the case we usually work on an overestimate of 20% of the gross weight to be safe.

If your storage of fireworks will exceed the above limits either in terms of time or NEC then I suggest you contact the local Fire Officer or Trading Standards and register your fireworks storage with them, I am sure they will be able to advise you further. We, for instance, use an ISO shipping container at our own stores with a 250Kg NEC limit, which seems to be sufficient. Obviously the has just scratched the surface but if you require a more detailed explanation then please see online.

Our own Mayhem for example weighs 9kgs but only contains 0.76kgs of explosive so less than 10% of the overall weight. In fact you could buy 65 of these giant cakes and still be under the 50kg 3-week limit.
