Most of the industry descended on Vegas for the colossal CHAMPS and the smaller, but important spinoffs BIG and AGE. Many buyers and some vendors somehow also found time to work the ginormous apparel show, Magic, into the mix. Trade show weeks are never easy, but with these shows being a combination of consecutive and concurrent over 8 days, it amounted to a tradeshow marathon. I’ve heard some may have even been doping just to get through it all. In the end, after the swollen feet, exhausted bodies and pounding heads have subsided - one must ask - was it all worth the effort? For this round of spring shows, the answer was a resounding YES. Vegas was abuzz with a wonderfully healthy mix of buyers, artists, and hundreds - if not thousands - of smoke shop and other lifestyle suppliers. As I heard a wise man once proclaim, a rising tide lifts all bowls. Rising tide aside, with the next round of Vegas shows happening in the historically lower turnout summer, does it still make sense for all these shows to exist in the dog days of late summer? Time will tell, but HotBreath Magazine is committed to supporting the glass blowing and smoke shop community wherever they may roam. I couldn’t be more stoked with how awesome issue 7 turned out. We’ve got a recap of the reliably impressive and bigger than ever CHAMPS Glass Games and it’s postshow feature from the first night, the Glass R/C Crash Up Derby contest. HotBreath brought the pizza - not that any actual participants got any, sorry guys, we’ll do it better next time! - the artists brought their game, and the audience brought their desire to see miniature mobilized glass destruction on a scale never before seen. Also in this issue, The Glass Otaku talks with Coyle about the Munny phenomenon and just how far the glass Munny thing can go. Glass Otaku also chats it up with Stoke out of Austin, whose work has us, errr, totally stoked. Out of Texas as well, 420 Science sits down with up and comer Stephan Pierce, to discuss his unique style and innovative contributions to the art. Plus, Kate Csillagi talks with David Daily and Micah Evans about their Grav Labs collaboration and why high value inspired production glass brings big opportunities for both buyers and sellers. As if that’s not enough from Austin TX, we hope you’ll come see us at Glassroots (April 21-23) after the Armadillo Art Glass Initiative (April 19-21). If you can spend the whole week there for both of these events, Austin is an amazing city and doing Texas size things in the premium smoke shop market.

Crucible Kiln A vessel of a very refractory material such as porcelain or ceramic used for melting and calcining glass. A crucible is used to melt down chips of glass to an extremely high temperature, where the glassblower then uses a large glass rod to gather and pull pieces of molten glass from the crucible.
