EMBERÁ INDIGENOUS COMMUNITY The Emberá Indians are one of the many ethnic indigenous tribes in Panamá. Visitors are welcome to discover their culture in one of their communities, Emberá Purú, Parará Purú or Embera Drua (choice depends on the climate), each located on the banks of one of the most important rivers in the Canal Basin. After a scenic bus ride to the banks of the San Juan or Charges River, we are met by representatives of the Emberá Indians who take us up the river in piraguas (wood canoes). We then arrive at a community of Emberá Indians, originating from the mountainous region of the Darién province. We experience the history and culture of the indigenous culture, through narrative, traditional dance and craftsmanship like baskets woven from the natural fibres of the chunga, maquenque and naguala palm trees, as well as figures carved in cocobolo wood and tagua (better known as vegetable ivory). We will enjoy a traditional lunch of fried fish and yucca or plantains served in a plantain leaf cone. This is the opportunity to try an ancestral custom in the form of a tattoo with jagua, an extract from vegetable seeds, which the Emberá use to adorn their bodies with geometrical patterns or animal sketches for ceremonies and special celebrations. PANAMÁ EXPRESS TRAIN We arrive by bus at the city of Colón, Panamá’s commercial capital and the Western Hemisphere’s largest Free Trade Zone. Weather permitting, we visit the 16th century San Lorenzo Fortress on the banks of the Chagres River. It was from here that the infamous pirate Henry Morgan set off to loot the city of Panamá. We visit the Aguas Claras Observation Center - a new viewpoint of the Canal expansion with a panoramic view. From this vantage point, we take in the majestic Gatún Lake, the ships transiting the Canal and the recent engineering feat of the Canal expansion. Lunch will be served in a restaurant in the city of Colón, followed by a panoramic tour of Colón, before returning to Panamá City on the Panamá Express Train (a journey of about 1 hour), the world’s first inter-oceanic railway. The rails border the Canal stretch at all times, passing by the still and immense Gatún Lake and through the dense, virgin tropical forest of the Canal Watershed.

SURF – EL PALMAR BEACH A mere 30 minutes from the Beach Resorts - 80 minutes from Panamá City we arrive in El Palmar, a small coastal town on Panamá's Pacific coast, where you find Panamá Surf School, located along an ideal stretch of the Pacific Gulf, offering the possibility to surf one of the country's most recognised beaches. This is showcased by the large diversity of handmade products and the variety of natural materials used to elaborate them: hats, wicker baskets, wood carving and painting, jewellery manufacturing, embroidery and carvings in “soap stone”. We visit Panafruit, a local cashew-processing plant. We then continue on to the town of Natá de Los Caballeros, the oldest settlement on the Pacific coast and second settlement to be found on the mainland. Here, we visit the Lesser Basilica of Santiago Apóstol (Saint James the Apostle) and the El Caño Archaeological Museum, where the remains of an ancient, mysterious pre-columbine culture are exhibited.We then visit a handcrafts store in the village of La Pintada where the famous “Sombreros Pintados” are manufactured by hand. ECOLOGICAL ADVENTURE AT LA INDIA DORMIDA HIKE & HOT SPRINGS Located in El Valle de Anton, 45 minutes from the Beach Resort, we invite you to discover the fabled history that brings to life this majestic mountain, baptised ‘La India Dormida’ (i.e. The Sleeping Indian Girl). Evoking the shape of a sleeping woman, this mountain has inspired poets and writers who immortalised it in a popular legend from the colonial period. The tour begins with a visit to the famous ‘Piedra Pintada’, the Painted Stone, engraved with petroglyphs carved by native ancestors, narrating the great ancient history of the Anton Valley. While hiking up the trail to la India Dormida, we cross a beautiful forest of mixed vegetation, reaching the top of the mountain in approximately two hours. Once at the summit, one can enjoy the cool breeze and the spectacular view, at an altitude of more than 700 meters above sea level. INTRO TO BIRD-WATCHING AT CERRO CAMPANA NATIONAL PARK Cerro Campana, located a mere 50 km from the Resort, covers an area of 4,816 hectares (11,900 acres) and became the country’s first national park in 1967. The park, embraced by the Rio Chagres, which is part of the complex water reserve system to provide the Panamá Canal operations, harbours a great biodiversity of flora and fauna. According to studies carried out by the National Panamánian University and the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute, the geography of the region, characterised by mountains of basaltic rock at altitude, has contributed to the park’s rich diversity of species. This is the perfect place for bird-watching, even for beginners. You will become familiarised with species such as the iris-beaked toucan, the tangara, the white-tailed sparrow hawk and the pava simba. LAS YAYAS WATERFALL The Las Yayas Waterfall is located at the entrance of the Omar Torrijos Herrera National Park in El Copé, approximately one hour from the Resort. At this place, the water slides down huge volcanic rocks to finally divide itself into three falls. It is Mother Nature’s treasure, inviting you to learn about its history. Here, you can observe a variety of exuberant ferns, moss, orchids, bromelias, heliconias and an endless number of endemic plants. Towards the end of the tour, we come upon a small look-point with an inviting view of natures great scenery. The hour-and-a-half long walk allows the visitor to take in all of nature’s marvels in an ecological adventure. PANAMÁ RUM ROUTE Two and a half hours away from the Beach Resort we find the picturesque town of Pesé in the Herrera Province. Here, we visit Hacienda San Isidro, the birthplace of Panamá's rum, where the famous Ron Abuelo and Seco Herrerano are produced. We begin the tour of Pesé learning about the history of the town. We visit the colonial home of the Hacienda’s founder Don Jose Varela Blanco and his family. At the colonial home we see an exhibit of restored photos of the family, the old distillery, the sugar cane mill and of the people of the area. We pay a brief visit to the San Jose Church, an iconic structure in Pesé. We continue on to Hacienda San Isidro where we tour the distillery and learn about the steps in the production process, starting from harvesting the sugar cane, to the fermentation, the distillation, and the ageing, when rum is aged in a cellar in barrels made from white oak trees. We enjoy tasting the various Abuelo rums 7 year vintage, 12 year vintage and the Ron Abuelo Centuria, the cognac of rums. The rum-tasting session is done following the instructions of a rum master and exposes you to a sensorial experience using sight, smell, and taste, discovering the organoleptic characteristics and the components of Premium rums. PANAMÁ CANAL, BIOMUSEUM & CRAFTS MARKET Three million years ago, Panamá changed life in the world - the BIOMUSEUM tells the fascinating story of the origins of the isthmus. Designed by the internationally acclaimed architect Frank Gehry (who also designed the Guggenheim Museum of Bilbao) the BIOMUSEUM is located on the Amador Causeway, the Museum has a marvellous view of the Panamá City Bay, and is Gehry’s only work in Latin America. The building measures 4,000 m2 /43,000 sq. ft. and includes 8 galleries with permanent interactive exhibits, designed in sequence to give an overview of the amazing global impact on biodiversity caused by the rising of the Isthmus from the sea, uniting the two continents, separating a great ocean into two and changing the ecology of the planet forever. Then, we continue on to the Miraflores Locks, an ideal place to watch the Canal operations (subject to the Panamá Canal Authority's transit schedule). The Visitor’s Center features spacious balconies, where visitors can overlook the opening of the Canal compartments up close and see how ships initiate or complete their transit through the Canal. There are four permanent exhibits, organised by theme. These are the heart of the Miraflores Visitor’s Center, dedicated to the history of the Canal, the importance of water as a source of life, the Canal operation and its role in world trade, and the progress made in the canal expansion project. To complement the Canal experience, we continue the tour with a visit to the historic Panamá Interoceanic Museum in the Casco Antiguo. That makes it one of the most easily accessible tropical forests in the world. Over 17 km./11 miles the stretch of road offers a truly exciting bird watching experience. At the Christmas counts organised by the Panamá Audubon Society, members have registered the highest number of species seen during a 24-hour period: 394. The surrounding tropical forest is as diverse as the birdlife; in the Parque Nacional Soberanía there are approximately 1,300 species of trees, 105 species of mammals, 55 species of amphibians and 79 species of reptiles. RAFTING ON THE MAMONI RIVER One of the characteristics of the geography of Panamá, is the thick forests that hide the most beautiful rivers, inviting the visitor to take part in the unforgettable experience of this exciting sport! The Mamoni River is located in the district of Chepo, approximately 1 hour and 40 minutes from Panamá City. The actual time spent on the river, is around 3 hours, with class III and IV rapids. In some places, it is necessary to walk due to the difficult terrain, for instance at the beautiful Chorro de Chachare. The exuberant rainy jungle in the Ecocanal; the cultural interaction and exchange with the Emberá Wounaan indigenous communities; the ruins of the old city, its monuments, and its most important economic center in the Historic Panamá or; the trip to Colon, traveling a trade route that was one of the most important during the XVI and XVII centuries in the fabulous experience of Ports and the Canal Railway Co.; the direct contact with nature along the trails of the tropical rainy forest in the picturesque town of El Valle de Antón; learning about Panamá’s most important economic activities in the tour of its Productive Route; and the direct contact with tropical species in its Ecologic and Environmental Route, turn this destination into one of the most varied and rich options for knowledge and experience in the area of educational tours.

TOURS AND ROUTES ECOCANAL The Gatun Lake area is located on the banks of Chagres River and it was the largest reservoir in the world until 1937. The Gatun Lake river basin is over 1,903 square kilometers wide and is made up of sand, limestone, and volcanic rock. Around the Gatun Lake area, we find a system that presents different categories of habitats such as scrublands, thickets, secondary and mature forests, wetlands, crops, grazing grounds, forest plantations and soil without vegetation. Among its most characteristic fauna one can find different species of primates, mammals, birds, and reptiles. Exploring this path allows students and teachers to identify flora and fauna typical inherent of the rainforest. It also has a historical value because this was the route that the conquistadores used before the lake was created. EMBERÁ INDIGENOUS COMMUNITY One of the most representative indigenous communities in Panamá is the Emberá Wounaan. They arrived in the country in the 1950s from the Darien area, seeking better living conditions. They settled in the Rio Chagres region where, thanks to its physical and geographic attributes, they are able to develop their farming and handicraft activities. After a motorised canoe (piragua) trip along the river, one reaches a community made up of 21 families and more than 80 inhabitants. During their visit to the Emberá Wounaan community, teachers and students will learn about the Emberá social organisation, artistic expressions and handicrafts, as well as their life style, agriculture, and education. Lecture about the Community: The head of the community will give the lecture discussing various topics in the introductory presentation: Origins of the Emberá Wounaan community, Social, Religious, and Economic Structure, Crops System, Economic Activities, Housing and Clothing. Handicrafts Workshop: Guided by community experts, there will be a workshop in which explorer will learn about the secrets of the Emberá Wounaans to work plant fibres such as the chunga, maquenque and naguala, natural dyes and especially the work done with tagua, better known as the vegetable ivory. Traditional Dances: Live presentation by Emberá Wounaan community members to show their traditional, ceremonial as well as social, dances with the students’ participation. PORTS AND CANAL RAILWAY CO. Panamá is one of the most important logistics centres in the world, in terms of transportation and cargo due, to the infrastructure and the modern Atlantic and Pacific ports, as well as railroads, roads, and airports. The routes managed from Panamá represent a complex network that allows different countries to establish a permanent connection to markets, facilitating import, export, and tourism processes. Throughout this journey, students and teachers will closely learn about the port movement, its classification and services, proving that the operation involves millions of people around the world. Canal Railway Co.: Journey between Colon and Panamá City, during which students get to learn about the history of the train as a means of transportation in the world and in Panamá, and as a means to facilitate port and canal operations. ANTON VALLEY Valle de Antón [Anton Valley] is located in the province of Coclé, which according to its geological origin, is the crater of an extinct volcano and the reason why you can see hills and volcanic rocks. This land houses flora and fauna species typical of its altitude, 700 meters above sea level, an ideal topography for trailing and an extraordinary landscape, which complemented with the beautiful craftwork done by the natives of the area, transform this route into one of the most fruitful for academic endeavours. Throughout this experience, teachers and students will experience a day of direct contact with nature, complimented by fun and adventure. PRODUCTIVE ROUTE The Panamánian productive sector ranges from arts and crafts to the most advanced manufacturing techniques. In addition to being a logistics center of great importance, it is also important to note the different actors of the productive chain, vital to the country’s social and economic activity. Through guided tours to different companies of the region, belonging to different productive sectors and with very specific characteristics, topics such as the following will be addressed: acquisition of raw materials, implementation of procedures, labor, manufacturing process, clean technologies, distribution mechanisms and positioning in the market. Furthermore, this route involves elements of cultural and religious identity, which are very important in the region. It was the first sugar mill founded in Panamá, in 1911. The tour includes visits to the following areas: Sugar Cane Yard, Packing Room, Sugar Deposit and Museum. Visit to Nestlé: A multinational corporation that engages in the production of condensed milk and powdered milk, as well as chocolate bars, candy, instant coffee, culinary products, frozen food, instant beverages, and domestic food. Nestlé arrived in Central America in 1937 and created its first structure in Panamá. Panafruit Cashew-Processing Plant: The use of the cashew tree, a tree inherent to the region and the impact of its production in the local economy. Relevance of peasant work. El Caño Archeological Park: At this important archeological center, a chronological sequence has been established starting with 150-450 A.C. up until the period of the Spanish conquest in 1520. One can see a homogenous cultural region at the park with a development that goes from 3000 B.C. up until 1600 A.C. Exhibits include: Panamánian ceramic work, the Coclé Style (ceramic samples) and the three pre-Hispanic cultural regions of the country. Panamánian Hat Factory: The different weaves, which plant fibres that are used, natural dyes, designs, and uses. Importance of the “Sombrero Pintado” [Painted Hat] for Panamánian men and women, as well as its social significance. San Juan Cigar Factory: A company that processes tobacco leaves for the production of cigars, currently producing six different cigar brands.

ECOLOGICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL ROUTE The protected areas, as well as the Nature Parks, are a vital reserve for humankind, in addition to guaranteeing a balance between the environment and the species that inhabit it. Environmental Education, as a strategy to disseminate activities aimed at promoting conservation, as well as awareness, allows students and teachers to become environmentally conscious, which later on translate into effective action that help in the recovery and good use of the resources. In this experience, being developed at the Metropolitan Natural Park and the Summit Municipal Park, through hands-on workshops, the participants will be able to appreciate the protected environment and learn further about typical and exotic species, many of them in danger of extinction. SOCIAL GIVE-BACK COMMUNITY PROGRAMS The social service by high school students is a graduation prerequisite established by educational institutions. Social service programs must be guided through objectives and goals focused on benefits for the community, based on their needs. One to three activities can be selected, based on the program established by the institution, adjusting the time required. GENERAL RECOMMENDATIONS  The participants must avoid bringing valuables as, due to the nature of the program, activities are held outdoors.  Tours and activities that depend on the climate and on maritime or river conditions may be cancelled at the last minute.  The activities involve a protocol of behavior and safety that must be observed by the participants and those accompanying them.  Alcoholic beverages, cigarettes and hallucinogenic substances are not allowed. Decameron Explorer reserve the right to refuse admission.  What to pack? 1. Comfortable clothing and shoes, jacket, raincoat, hat, sunblock, refillable water bottles, flashlight, insect repellent, bathing suit, prescription medicines, Prepaid Medicine with original identification documents. 2.
