FIRST CLIFF WALK, GRINDELWALD

LAC OF THE CHESERYS, CHAMONIX

This is one of my favourite Mayrhofen walks. It is a challenging yet rewarding walk, spanning 11km with a 700m ascent. The guided pace and handy mountain hut stops meant it was really enjoyable. The trail winds through lush forests, revealing stunning mountain views.

This 9km walk starts at a must-see Jungfrau attraction, an elevated walkway with breathtaking mountain views. We followed the path down a gravel road to the stunning Bachalp Lake, relaxed, and later descended to Waldspitz hut for lunch and incredible Eiger Mountain views.

Get off the tourist trail and discover the vast undeveloped landscape of the Lötschen Valley. You don’t have to go far to go big, and in Kandersteg you can also enjoy gentle walking along the River Kander or a visit to the Gasterntal – a glacier valley with vast waterfalls, wildlife and forests.

As part of our sustainability journey, we know it is essential that we contribute to a more sustainable future. Did you know? CORVARA, ITALY There are two nature parks around Corvara and Colfosco, the Puez-Geisler (or Puez Odle) and FanesSenes-Braies. Together they provide mile-upon-mile of pathways to explore, with stunning views, colourful wild flowers and various geological sites well worth a visit.

FUSCHL, AUSTRIA Dive into nature and quietness - motorboats are banned on Fuschlsee. Instead, the little Fuschlerin barge glides between the wooden jetties on the lakeshore. You can plot your own route between turquoise bays too, by kayak, rowing boat or pedalo.

There are more than 60 huts to choose from around Selva, and the food won’t disappoint. Typical mountain fare has more Austro-Hungarian influences than it does Italian but don’t worry it’s easy to stumble upon fresh, stone-baked pizzas.

Don’t miss the Hörnli Hut at the foot of the Matterhorn. It has an important place in the history of mountaineering and is a popular overnight spot for climbers attempting to summit the Matterhorn – for the rest of us, it’s just a nice place to stop after a pleasant 2-3 hour walk.

MAYRHOFEN, AUSTRIA

Looking for something special? Why not try your hand at being a chocolatier in Switzerland, dine in a Michelin-starred restaurant in Canazei or enjoy dishes from home grown food in Merano.

The valleys and mountains of the Zillertal are filled with mountain huts, including the Berliner Hut – the largest mountain shelter in the Tyrol. The views from here are as impressive as its size.

LAKE ANNECY, FRANCE Head up into the mountains and make tracks for a mountain hut, for cooler weather, big views and an Alpine treat once you arrive. The Aulp de Marlens hut is at the end of a meandering trail through forest and alpine pastures, with homemade cheese waiting for you.

MADEIRA From volcanic vistas and mountain levadas to Funchal city with its museums and markets – Madeira holidays are for those with a sense of adventure. Set 1,000 km away from mainland Portugal, Madeira is a one-of-a-kind island. It’s formed from the tip of a sunken volcano, for one, and although it’s long been dormant, these volcanic origins shape the landscapes explored on walking holidays in Madeira. The most famous footpaths are the levada walking trails – ingenious irrigation systems that twist and turn through fairy-tale forests and mist-wreathed mountains. Walking, cycling, boat trips, wine tasting and feasting on island cuisine are also excellent ways to get stuck into the spectacular geography of Madeira.

Funchal is a sprawling city – famous for its harbour, mountain backdrop and flower displays. Hang out in the old town to get a feel of the history and culture. The narrow alleyways are always fun, with lots of artisan cafés and restaurants to stop in. For the best view jump on the cable car to Monte and explore beautiful botanical gardens. Follow the levadas Funchal is a gateway to Madeira’s legendary walking routes. Around 3,000 kilometres of paths follow these stone irrigation channels. Some hikes are easy meanders between orchards and prehistoric laurel forests; others clamber up (and up and up) to mountains and gorges. And with names like Paradise Valley and Eagle Rock, who can resist?

Ortisei is a lively mountain town with a big heart and access to the great outdoors right on its doorstep

Ortisei is full of outdoorsy folk who don’t stop just because the snow has melted off the mountains. Instead, they spend their summers on walking and cycling paths. The Seceda gondola carries passengers from Ortisei all the way to the summit of the Seceda Mountain. All you have to do is marvel at the views over the shard-like Odle peaks. If you fancy stretching your legs, miles of walking paths wind through alpine wildflowers and past mountain huts with sun-trap decks. There are also routes down to some of the best mountain biking tracks in the Val Gardena. Perching on the Italian slopes of the Matterhorn - or Monte Cervino as the locals call it – come and explore the town of Cervinia

This is where Italy meets Switzerland, which is very easily visited during the day thanks to the brand new Alpine Crossing gondola linking Cervinia to Zermatt. From its high glaciers - where you can ski (even in the summer) - down to its main street lined with bars and restaurants, Cervinia has been on the map for hiking, climbing and biking for over a century. Half an hour’s walk from Cervinia is Lago Blu with its deep turquoise colour. Walk around the small lake to catch it from the right angle and see the Matterhorn mirrored in its clear waters. Not far away are the Layet Lakes, three pozze (or ‘puddles’) of spring water, all different hues of blue and green, that overlook the valley.

Best for

The town of Garda is a sought-after spot – but that’s nothing new. People have flocked here for millennia, each leaving their storied stamp; from Roman vineyards to Venetian villas and historic hotels. Whiling away time strolling around the old town and along the promenade is a pleasure, but there’s still more to see beyond this sheltered bay. Head further afield to Lazise along the promenade, a beautiful walk or cycle away, or if you fancy giving the calf muscles a workout, make sure you climb the 6km up to La Rocca for panoramic views. Look out over the pin-striped vineyards and sailing boats that characterise the eastern shore of Lake Garda. The rest of Lake Garda calls – as well as the cities of Venice and Verona, just a ferry and train ride away.

Best for

On a map of Lake Garda, you’ll see a delicate peninsula unfurling from the southern shore. This is Sirmione – one of the most striking towns in the Italian Lakes. It packs a lot into that thread of land, too. Scaligero Castle is the photogenic crown, but there are also medieval lanes, beaches, Roman ruins, olive groves and thermal spas – and all on traffic-free streets. Beyond the historic centre, you can continue with lakeside strolls along the promenade or board one of the ferries that hop between Lake Garda’s many towns; a great way to explore the other parts of the lake. Gardone rests between a tree-lined water front and forested hills – and it’s all within easy reach of some of the prettiest towns on Lake Garda

Best for

With cypress trees, palatial gardens and a laid-back atmosphere, Gardone Riviera is one of the most peaceful spots on Lake Garda. The flower-lined promenade with panoramic lake views is made for strolling and its waterfront and courtyard terraces are made for feasting – preferably on homemade pasta and freshly caught fish. Hours can be whiled away wandering between the lemon and cream villas of the centre, where the piazza dips down to the waterfront. Heller Botanical Garden is the most intriguing of Gardone’s many gardens, filled with sculptures by the likes of Auguste Rodin and Roy Lichtenstein. A weekly market sells local products - lemons, olive oil, wine, cheese - and a fishermen’s museum tells the story of Limone’s history. Walking is a great way to explore the landscape Easy lakeside trails and challenging hikes stretch from lake-level up to 1,000m around Limone. There are no gondola’s so if you want those views from the top you’ll need to work hard, but it’s very rewarding! Whatever path you choose, the views are immense.

The perfect place for a relaxing summer holiday, the lake of Fuschlsee is one of the most peaceful in the Salzkammergut

Dive into nature and quietness - motorboats are banned on Fuschlsee; instead, the little Fuschlerin barge glides between the wooden jetties on the lakeshore. You can plot your own route between turquoise bays by kayak, rowing boat or pedalo and any place is an excellent place for a swim – especially the Fuschleseebad lido. The small town of Fuschl am See is on the south-eastern edge of the lake and some of the nicest walks start here. They range from languid loops of the lake and paths that weave forests and pastures to routes up the Schober Mountain. In nearby St. Gilgen the Zwölferhorn gondola climbs up the mountain, offering fantastic views and mountain trails. Many would be hard-placed to pin Filzmoos on a map (and that’s a good thing). Morzine is one of the most popular alpine towns, with visitors coming to enjoy the adventure sports, mountain lifestyle and the busy cafés, bars, restaurants and shops. The mountain village of Arinsal drapes itself along a valley in the north-west of Andorra, not far from the Spanish border. The forested slopes of the Pyrenees close in on either side – a preview of the walking and cycling territory that’s the highlight of staying in this neck of the woods. Back at base, the restaurants and cafés are as international as their clientele. For a change of scene, hop on a bus to La Massana and its family-friendly adventure park or head to the capital city of Andorra La Vella. Comapedrosa Nature Park lies just north of Arinsal, where you can hike marked paths to high mountain waterfalls, lakes and forests – all watched over by Coma Pedrosa itself which, at almost 3,000m tall, is Andorra’s highest peak.

Traveller Information Regulation 5(2)(b): Information to be provided to the traveller before the package travel contract is concluded. Part 1: General: The combination of travel services offered to you is a package within the meaning of the Package Travel and Linked Travel Arrangements Regulations 2018. Therefore you will benefit from all EU rights applying to the packages. We, Hotelplan Limited, will be fully responsible for the proper performance of the package as a whole. Additionally, as required by law, we have protection in place to refund your payments and, where transport is included in the package, to ensure your repatriation in the event that it becomes/they become insolvent. Part 2: Key rights under the Package Travel and Linked Travel Arrangements Regulations 2018 Travellers will receive all essential information about the package before concluding the package travel contract. ● There is always at least one trader who is liable for the proper performance of all the travel services included in the contract. ● Travellers are given an emergency telephone number or details of a contact point where they can get in touch with the organiser or the travel agent. ● Travellers may transfer the package to another person, on reasonable notice and possibly subject to additional costs. ● The price of the package may only be increased if specific costs rise (for instance fuel prices), and if expressly provided for in the contract, and in any event not later than 20 days before the start of the package. If the price increase exceeds 8% of the price of the package, the traveller may terminate the contract. If the organiser reserves the right to a price increase, the traveller has a right to a price reduction if there is a decrease in the relevant costs. ● Travellers may terminate the contract without paying any termination fee and get a full refund of any payments if any of the essential elements of the package, other than the price, has changed significantly. If before the start of the package the trader responsible for the package cancels the package, travellers are entitled to a refund and compensation where appropriate. ● Travellers may terminate the contract without paying any termination fee before the start of the package in the event of exceptional circumstances, for instance if there are serious security problems at the destination which are likely to affect the package. ● Additionally, travellers may at any time before the start of the package terminate the contract in return for an appropriate and justifiable termination fee. ● If, after the start of the package, significant elements of the package cannot be provided as agreed, suitable alternative arrangements will have to be offered to the traveller at no extra cost. Travellers may terminate the contract without paying any termination fee, where services are not performed in accordance with the contract and this substantially affects the performance of the package and the organiser fails to remedy the problem. ● Travellers are also entitled to a price reduction or compensation for damages or both where the travel services are not performed or are improperly performed. ● The organiser has to provide assistance if the traveller is in difficulty. ● If the organiser or the retailer becomes insolvent, payments will be refunded. If the organiser becomes insolvent after the start of the package and if transport is included in the package, repatriation of the travellers is secured. Hotelplan Limited has taken out insolvency protection, for flight-inclusive holidays by virtue of its ATOL, held with the CAA, under ATOL number: 0025, and for non-flight packages, with ABTA Ltd (No. V4871).
