break the suspense
Immerse yourself in breathtaking acrobatic feats performed in the hi-tech aqua theatre – Dubai’s unique in-residence show, La Perle by Dragone, has arrived!
The entertainment scene in Dubai has been propelled to a whole new level with the opening of the emirate’s first in-residence show, La Perle by Dragone, in August. The mysterious new production, directed by the legendary Franco Dragone and brought to Dubai by Al Habtoor Group, is set to entice visitors in their droves to see the one-of-a-kind performance. “Dubai is the only destination on the planet where people can see this show,” reveals executive producer Craig Hartenstine. “There has never before been a show of this magnitude in the region.” A homegrown concept, La Perle’s journey to fruition has been aided by Khalaf Ahmad Al Habtoor, chairman of Al Habtoor Group, who sought to bring a unique entertainment offering to the emirate. The production, which has been built from scratch, was a dream proposition for the creative team behind it. “We have had the freedom to create a show with no constraints, led by Franco’s artistic vision and with the entire theatre constructed around it. The result is unlike anything else on earth and we hope that both residents and visitors will embrace it.” With its undeniable ‘wow’ factor, La Perle will play a vital role in establishing Dubai as a destination for world-class entertainment. Staging an impressive 450 shows a year, it’s
hoped that, along with the emirate’s new theme parks and opera house, it will entice a whole new wave of visitors to UAE shores. “The impact that Franco’s shows have had on the destinations they are set in is mind-blowing,” says Craig. “His spectacles, such as Celine Dion – A New Day, Le Rêve in Las Vegas and The House of Dancing Water in Macau, are extremely well established and draw sell-out crowds. As such, it is exciting to see the groundswell of entertainment that is happening in Dubai right now.” Feel the performance Audience members can expect to be taken on an emotional journey in an intimate setting. “As it’s the first show of its kind, it is challenging to describe,” says Craig. “Just like viewing an incredible piece of art, each audience member’s experience will be personal to the viewer. It will reset expectations of live entertainment and I’m confident that those who have been will urge others to come and see for themselves.” Taking place in a custom-built, state-of-the-art aqua theatre at Al Habtoor City, La Perle is a compelling mixture of creative expression and groundbreaking technology. A 65-strong cast of skilled artists will showcase an extraordinary line-up of aquatic and aerial stunts during the live

90-minute show, from flying around the auditorium on high-powered winches at a speed of 15 kilometres per hour, to diving into the water from a height of 25 metres – it promises to keep you on the edge of your seat. There is no narrative, as such, but there is certainly a theme. “Franco is an expert at instilling a sense of place into his shows,” says Craig. “In 2013, he produced a show for the Qasr Al Hosn Festival entitled ‘The Story of a Fort, Legacy of a Nation’, which celebrated 250 years of Emirati history and heritage, so his knowledge of the region is deep. What intrigues him is society and how, in Dubai, people have come from around the world to create a melting pot of nationalities. This has formed something exciting that cannot be replicated anywhere else. The development of the city shows no sign of stopping and this sentiment is reflected in the show by way of an epic visual poem.” With only 14 rows and seating extending 270 degrees around the aqua-stage, every seat offers an intimate and completely different perspective as the action unfolds. As the stage transforms, a visual feast of hi-tech, 3D projections, transport the audience to new worlds. “The aqua-stage has the ability to change from a hard surface to water in seconds,” says Craig. “The show is very three-dimensional, with performers emerging from the water and flying in from above at different speeds. The scenery is projected, wrapping all around the theatre so it feels very immersive. It is an enchanting performance that will take you on an emotional journey you won’t forget.” La Perle takes place twice a night, five days a week. Performances run from Tuesday to Friday at 7pm and 9:30pm, and Saturday at 4pm and 7pm starting from 31 August. Tickets start from Dhs400. To book, visit laperle.com or contact the dedicated Box Office: 800 LAPERLE (800 517373)/+971 4 437 0123, boxoffice@laperle.com or via platinumlist.com.
A show by artistic director Franco Dragone Franco Dragone, creative director of La Perle, is also the mastermind behind celebrated shows such as Celine Dion – A New Day, Le Rêve in Las Vegas and The House of Dancing Water in Macau. He said: “An experience like no other, La Perle sets a new milestone in world-class entertainment with a show so spectacular that we had to build a theatre around it. We are extremely proud to present this unique project and can’t wait to immerse guests the wonderful world of La Perle.”
The statistics are mind boggling The show is held in a 1,300-seat state-ofthe-art aqua theatre, utilising 2.7 million litres of water and will be staged more than 450 times a year. Further to this, there is a 65-strong cast of international artists involved, each of whom bring a unique set of skills to the performance, from acting to acrobatics and aquatic and aerial stunts. The performers will mesmerise you as they dive into the on-stage pool.
5 La PerLe
It’s the jewel in the crown of Al Habtoor City La Perle sits at the heart of Al Habtoor City, along Dubai Water Canal. Khalaf Ahmad Al Habtoor, founding chairman, Al Habtoor Group, said: “A world-class theatre and show of this magnitude takes years to prepare for. It will set a new benchmark for the entertainment sector and put Dubai on the map as the go-to destination for first-class live theatre.”
Get set for a fully-immersive experience You will begin your La Perle journey in the futuristic lobby where you will collect your ticket and can grab a snack before heading inside. Opening the doors to the main theatre, your jaw will drop as you see the one-of-a-kind set-up. Mulliner Room, The Bentley Suite, The St. Regis Dubai
15 hotel review
Lap of Luxury Lucy Land finds it easy to feel at home during an indulgent stay at The St. Regis Dubai
“It’s a Bentley!” My friend had beaten me to working out that the large mural by Roberto Raad dominating The St. Regis Bar represented the sleek curves of a vintage Bentley Mulsanne. It was an obvious call, now I think about it, considering St. Regis Hotels & Resorts has a global collaboration with Bentley Motors. The mural is a standout feature of the bar, which is inspired by the Gilded Age and the iconic King Cole Bar at The St. Regis New York. There’s a definite gentleman’s club feel to the space with its rich woodwork, riveted leather, equestrian sculptures, artworks and cigar room, although my friend and I felt thoroughly at home in the setting. Indeed, it’s the perfect spot for a pre-dinner Golden Mary – a gold leaf garnished variant of the Bloody Mary, which The St. Regis New York famously invented. Raising the steaks Once we’d soaked up the refined ambience, it was time to head to J&G Steakhouse. A grand marble bar leads to a spacious Art Deco-inspired dining room, in which a jazz band played so flawlessly that my friend had to stop me from asking for the volume to be turned down a notch. Despite being a dedicated vegetarian for most of my life, I was eager to check out the menu. “I think it will be a rich truffle risotto for us this evening,” mocked my friend. I also couldn’t help assuming that the vegetarian options would be the sideshow. However, we were very quickly proven wrong. As well as offering a selection of more than 17 cuts of beef, including prime steaks from a farm in Queensland, Australia, where grain-fed cattle are bred especially for St. Regis properties around the world, there’s also an impressive fresh raw bar – with not a single risotto on the menu.
Brasserie Quartier
The restaurant takes its trolley service seriously. Bartender Emmanuel introduced us to his beverage selection before preparing a perfect raspberry-based concoction tableside while we perused the menu. Restaurant manager Thor gently guided us through his wonderful food recommendations, which included asparagus soup, shiitake mushrooms and orange oil to start, followed by a selection to share: heart of palm salad with tomato, coconut and oregano; truffle fritters; squash ravioli with sage brown butter and Parmesan; potato gratin; and grilled asparagus with lemon zest and olive oil. Despite our meat-free choices, our waiter ensured we weren’t left out of the experience of choosing a steak knife (Opinel for me, Global for her) and condiments (we opted for
an unusual gingerbread mustard and fireman’s mustard). We were worried we’d over-ordered, particularly as I had already indulged on homemade brioche, but Thor’s recommendations were spot on. Perhaps aided by the yuzu sorbet palate cleanser, we even managed to squeeze in a just-right salted caramel sundae with candied peanuts and popcorn for dessert. After plucking up the courage, we admitted to the sommelier Kyle-Ray that we had missed the 7pm Champagne sabering in the Champagne Lounge due to getting a bit too relaxed in Iridium Spa (I blame the excellent bespoke massage). There, all the clocks are set to midnight to encourage guests to forget their hectic schedules, so it’s an easy trap to fall into. Ever obliging,
Kyle-Ray kindly treated us to our very own show. At your service Aside from the culinary and pampering delights on offer, the guestrooms are also particularly indulgent. We slept so well that we almost missed breakfast. You’ll be pleased to learn (as we were) that the signature beds, bedding and pillows are available to buy online. The claw-footed bathtub is equally covetable. Indeed, the sumptuous bathroom, with ‘his and hers’ sinks, separate walk-in shower (with a handy seat) and Laboratoire Remède products in our grand deluxe room was my favourite spot, although the walk-in closet came a very close second. Our on-call butler made us feel like royalty – he had insisted on pressing our evening dresses the night before.

If you want to go all out, the custom-designed Bentley Suite is the room to book. With leather finishes and wood veneer, it is inspired by the Bentley Mulsanne and includes a huge living room with dining area for 10. Alternatively, the vast 913-squaremetre, three-bedroom Sir Winston Churchill Suite is the one for art and history buffs. It contains 15 paintings, including portraits of Churchill (some of which he painted himself), a majlis perfect for social gatherings, and an in-room staircase that leads to the rooftop plunge pool.

Grand Deluxe Room
Haute home Our breakfast spot was in the Brasserie Quartier, which is all elegant marble, soft creams and large panelled windows. It reminded us of Paris and, over a breakfast of eggs, fresh fruit and yoghurt, our conversation turned to Europe. The French Beaux-Arts architecture and neo-classical interiors pay homage to the original hotel, which opened in 1904 in New York. The stunning lobby echoes the original hotel with the Dubai incarnation featuring a double staircase, a 1,200-crystal chandelier and an impressive mural of a Bedouin on horseback holding a falcon while saluki dogs give chase. A mural in the Champagne Lounge includes a central panel of pearls in honour of the UAE’s pearl-diving heritage. The vision for the art and design concept of the hotel was an imaginary Emirati who travelled the world and brought back art to decorate his home. Having experienced exceptional service and plenty of surprises during our visit, we left agreeing that this was the kind of home we could keep returning to – preferably in a Bentley Mulsanne. CHUKKA UP! Guests of all ages can experience the ‘sport of kings’ at The St. Regis Dubai, Al Habtoor Polo Resort & Club with private lessons and a themed brunch among the experiences on offer
Riding lessons are great fun for all the family
Imagine the thrill of thundering along the length of an immaculately manicured field astride a magnificent thoroughbred horse; swinging your mallet with impeccable precision to score the winning goal in the final chukka of a major polo tournament. Whether you are keen to jump into the saddle, or are perfectly content with spectating, the 2017/18 UAE polo season is set to play its first chukka on 6 October, so there’s no better time to get involved in the sport of kings. At The St. Regis Dubai, Al Habtoor Polo Resort & Club, the sport isn’t reserved solely for equestrian athletes, although watching a team in action is a sure fire way to bring
home the exacting skill and passion that sets polo apart from other horseback sports. Dating back 2,500 years, polo grew its roots in Persia where it was played by the nobility. The appeal of the original equestrian sport subsequently spread to Arabia, China, Japan, India, England and the US. Today, while it retains its elite standing, polo has become increasingly accessible for anyone who is interested in fast-paced sporting action. Those of all skill levels, from novices to seasoned riders, will receive a warm welcome at Al Habtoor Riding School and Polo Academy, which offers a number of different
taster experiences for those keen to try their hand – and seat – at the noble sport. Set in 54 acres of lush green scenery with four world-class polo fields, the Riding School and Polo Academy is led by a professional team of experienced international instructors. Together they offer hands-on coaching for all those looking to develop their abilities. Now to swot up on some of the rules. A four-person team game, professional players ride a different polo pony in each of the four 7½-minute chukkas. Fast and furious, the aim is to score as many goals as possible and, with the ball travelling at speeds of up to 110mph, it’s all about
19 polo season co-ordination and determination. Start off with a gentle introduction, after which aspiring players can choose from private one-on-one lessons and small group sessions, as well as focused skills training, such as stick and ball instruction. There are also a number of corporate packages available, providing a fun and effective way to encourage teamwork. For younger guests, riding lessons, desert hacks and pony club activities and camps are also available. Carry on the theme at Andalucia restaurant, which hosts The St. Regis Polo Brunch every Friday from 12.304pm. Featuring a delectable buffet menu of Spanish-influenced classics and Argentinian grills, diners can be seated indoors or on the terrace for a close up view of the day’s live polo action. Exercise of sorts is included, with spectators invited to head onto the field at half time for the traditional ‘divot stomping’.
