Better Education Your essential guide to the UAE’s nurseries, schools and universities
Better Education Guide
Welcome... The demand and supply gap of school places has been a worrying issue for many parents in the UAE, but it is getting smaller thanks to a number of new institutions, school expansions, and the country’s 2030 mission for growth. In this issue we review the best new schools opening in September and look at what Abu Dhabi is doing to meet the 2030 vision. We also have some essential advice for motivating students to get their homework done (and enjoy doing it), and teach parents and kids alike about the benefits of healthy eating and an active lifestyle. How this guide works Whatever level of education you’re looking into, this guide is the perfect place to start. The listings pages are broken down by the emirate, and each establishment is then arranged alphabetically, with handy summaries detailing facilities, fees, extracurricular activities and contact details. We’ve done our homework, so you don’t have to. Eleanor Joslin

A bigger and brighter future How education in Abu Dhabi is already realizing the UAE’s 2030 vision
Brendan Law, headmaster at Cranleigh Abu Dhabi What is the education sector like in Abu Dhabi? I am convinced that Abu Dhabi offers great potential in the sphere of education, given the multi-cultural environment in which we find ourselves. Its diversity is a strength, given that the world is increasingly becoming a global marketplace and we 4
are preparing children for life on the world stage. How does the sector need to improve? Demand for places in education remains high, especially for excellent quality schools. Parents have a wide range of choice, of course, but they are discerning and want the best for their children; schools like Cranleigh deliver excellence in all areas of school life and parents place a high value on that. We need more schools capable of delivering more than a
Better Education Guide
standardised curriculum, be that British, American or other. How is Cranleigh contributing to such improvements? Over 1,800 potential candidates applied for the 64 academic posts available this year, our first year of operation – a measure of the quality we have on offer. Our staff are highly valued and we ensure that they receive excellent accommodation, including onsite apartments, as well as excellent resources in keeping with their professionalism. All our visitors comment on the quality of the relationships between staff and children and the engagement of the pupils within lessons. This is the fulcrum of our success and we know that Cranleighans will make excellent progress because of it. With an emphasis on the individual, a wealth of opportunities allow all our pupils to explore
March 2015
the full range of their talents in creative arts, performing arts, sport, cultural and extracurricular activities. Our extended day programme ensures an inclusivity not seen in most schools within the region, where after-school ECA choices dilute the level of involvement. We believe that all children should play a full part in every area of school life; therefore, we include them by ensuring that the full array of activities is available within their weekly timetable. We even include prep (homework) in our programme so that when children return home at the end of the day families are free to enjoy time together. How is Cranleigh contributing to the UAE’s 2030 vision? Cranleigh is a significant part of the Saadiyat vision, which is – in turn – a significant part of Abu Dhabi 2030. Our motto, From Culture Comes Strength, reflects our synergy with the Cultural District; our proximity to the major art galleries (Louvre Abu Dhabi and Guggenheim Abu Dhabi, NYUAD and the Zayed National Museum) places us at the gateway of intellectual and cultural development in Abu Dhabi. Our academic, cultural and sporting programmes will ensure our status as the flagship school of the region, thereby helping to place Abu Dhabi on the world stage of education. Admissions are now open for Year 3 to 10; cranleigh.ae. 5
Nilay Ozral, CEO at Aldar Academies How much has Aldar invested in education? Aldar is a partner to the Government of Abu Dhabi. The rapid expansion of the population in Abu Dhabi created a need for increased access to good quality education in the Emirate. Aldar Academies has invested over AED450million as part of its commitment to provide world-class education to Abu Dhabi and Al Ain, thereby contributing to the UAE’s 2030 vision. We see this as a longterm investment and we will continue to invest in this sector as we expand. How else is Aldar Academies contributing to the UAE’s 2030 vision? At Aldar Academies, we are committed to contributing to Abu Dhabi’s socio-economic growth
while partnering with its 2030 vision. We have planned projects to grow our current schools and build new ones, thereby creating more opportunities for families in Abu Dhabi and provide a worldclass education for their children. In 2016 Al Mamoura School, an 1,800-seat primary and girls-only secondary school, is set to open in Abu Dhabi, as well as an American curriculum 1,800-student primary and segregated secondary school for all age groups on Yas Island. Sites for a primary school on Al Raha Beach have also been indentified. We plan to open schools in both the Al Falah and Al Ghadeer communities by 2018 to 2019. Aldar Academies is also working towards entering the nursery sector. From there students will be able to take advantage of automatic placements into our primary schools. All of this will grow our student capacity to over 14,000 in the next four to five years.

How will the quality of education be maintained? At Aldar Academies, the English National Curriculum and IBDP is specially adapted to the UAE and taught by professionals of an international calibre, ensuring that our students have access to a world-class education where intellectual development is nurtured alongside personal growth. We ensure a Continuous Professional Development programme for teaching staff across all our schools, to enhance their knowledge and skills and remain up-to-date with the latest developments. aldaracademies.com
Better Education Guide
Arabic culture and language. This is smart considering the statistic for 2020 predicts that the Emirati population may fall to 3%, as more and more expatriates move here. What makes education in Abu Dhabi stand out? Abu Dhabi has gone down a more cultural route with its museums and galleries, for example, and university education ties strongly into this strategy. They are far-sighted as tertiary education is key. There is a good infrastructure in place yet it all takes time; it is still an immature market, after all.
Fiona McKenzie, Gabbitas Educational Consultants How has the demand-supply gap changed in the UAE? With many new schools opening last September there were thousands of new school places and this has changed the dynamic of the Dubai market. Now, for the first time, supply looks like it is exceeding demand in certain year groups. It is still a challenge to get your child into some of the more March 2015
established schools but now there are good alternative options which will help to make waiting lists a thing of the past. Where does the demand lie? The biggest demand is still for the early years FS, Y1 and 2. What makes a UAE education stand out? The range and quality of the schools in the UAE are unparalleled; there are over 16 different curriculums on offer here. There are also measures in place to protect the local culture, with 20% of the timetable dedicated to
Which are the top institutions? The UAE has high-quality international providers: The Paris-Sorbonne University, New York University and INSEAD business school in Abu Dhabi; universities like Heriot-Watt and Wollongong in Dubai; and the most established university, The American University in Sharjah, now ranks in the top 500 in the QS world rankings. What about schools in the capital? While Abu Dhabi has had a strong focus on the HE market, now it is concentrating on opening more schools because there is a shortage of places. They have great plans to expand their schools to meet this demand. 7
The Homework Dilemma Advice from Nadia Petrossi, senior manager-parental engagement, GEMS Education I cringe when I hear a mum or dad describe how they spent their weekend doing their child’s project, or how they spent hours at the kitchen table struggling over homework – and how it all ended in tears. Are students really having such difficulties working independently or do teachers have unrealistic expectations? The partnership between home and school is critical when it comes to homework, with educators striving to improve the process so that it is a more useful and enjoyable experience for all parties involved. Multiple studies over the last 30 years show that, regardless 8
of starting ability, students who did their homework significantly increased their scores on reading and math tests and report card grades, when compared to similar students who did little or no homework at all. The dilemma is not whether to have homework or not, but rather, how to have welldesigned and high-quality assignments to extend student learning at home. Different learners respond and react to homework differently, in terms of effort and quality. Some students take too much time thinking about and perfecting assignments, while others rush through. Some kids just get
on with it, while others can’t get started, and some can be easily distracted. This classic work-avoidance is usually because the student isn’t connecting the assignment to what was said in class or anything meaningful to them. This is where parents can guide students to make a connection and give them a helping hand to get started. What’s important is that homework is a constructive experience for students. Compared to students who do little or no homework, those who do homework with a positive attitude are more likely to finish tasks successfully, meet deadlines, limit distractions, delay

gratification, practice good time management, and increase their motivation to learn. So, the big question is how do we motivate students to do homework? The answer is deceptively simple: teachers need to design high-quality homework and parents should help students make a connection so that they see value in home learning. Studies show that high school students who rated their homework as high in quality were more motivated to do their assignments, which increased their achievement. Students were also more motivated when given some choice or flexibility within assignments. At home, parents can give students the choice of which assignment to start with to empower the student and develop their sense of self-direction. According to homework expert Frances L. Van Voorhis, the purposes of homework include practice, preparation,
March 2015
participation (student interaction) and personal development of skills and talents. Students are more motivated when class lessons and homework are designed to serve specific purposes that support their progress toward set goals. When students see relevance, whether it is a real world application, personal
What’s important is that homework is a constructive experience connection or simply to practice their abilities – they will be more interested in homework. Homework is an important opportunity for students to bring home and share what they are learning in school, so that parents are aware of their progress and, where possible, are able to offer additional support. How parents speak about homework, school, teachers, and learning in general, is
critical to the attitudes that children form about work and the relevant preparation needed. These perceptions are the foundations for post-secondary student success, which will carry them into young adulthood and successful work life. Attitude is everything. When parents demonstrate attention and dedication to practice and skill development, students too will learn to value these vital attributes. Likewise, teachers designing purposeful homework with clear targets will win students over to this important routine. If you’re struggling, try these strategies at home to move more swiftly through homework: t Create an appropriate, comfortable and regular place to do homework t Reduce distractions by making the house quiet during homework time t Set a clear (and reasonable) start and end time to homework t Break down the assignment into smaller, more doable chunks t A timer might help students work at a reasonable pace t For reluctant starters, plan sections of the work and relate it to prior knowledge and something meaningful t Be positive, encourage high standards and have clear expectations 9

Swiss International Scientific School Dubai is constantly diversifying, and its education sector is following suit. In what is Dubai’s first private boarding school with a multilingual education in French, German, English and Arabic, Swiss International Scientific School (SISS) expertly draws upon the Emirate’s multi-cultural expat population and acknowledges the need to educate children as international citizens. Swiss International Scientific School offers students an ‘international education passport’. They will follow an International Baccalaureate (IB) programme from prekindergarten through to Year 12, in three bilingual options: English-French, EnglishGerman, or English plus foreign languages. “We believe multilingual education fosters academic 10

excellence, cultural diversity and shared human values,” says head of school Beat Sommer. “By its very nature, being multilingual enables students to be globallyminded citizens in our increasingly international world. Parents, especially in today’s ultra-competitive world, are always seeking to identify avenues to support their children’s future prospects, both personally and professionally. Bilingualism offers a competitive edge when students finally enter the workforce.”
The new school, located by Dubai Creek, instils Switzerland’s inclusive education system (IB was founded in Geneva in 1968) and also mirrors the nation’s multilingualism, which has four national languages, German, French, Italian and Romansh. For the 2015/2016 school year SISS is open from prekindergarten up to Year 6. The school will open its boarding facilities and secondary school later, where studies take on a strong scientific focus. From Year 9 they can switch to Swiss Matura. sisd.ae

The new Jumeirah Park site will be a colourful learning environment
Dubai British School Jumeirah Park (a Taaleem school) Principal Heather Mann answers our questions Why is there demand for another school? Our Dubai British Foundation School is full and there is so much demand for school places here, particularly for younger age groups, Foundation Stage up to Year 2. This is the reason Dubai British School Jumeirah Park has been built, to help bridge the gap between demand and supply. Why is Jumeirah Park a good site? Jumeirah Park itself is a new development within ‘new Dubai’ and it’s where there will be shortages of places in the future. The school will be a good option for families moving into the area and surrounding areas, too, like Dubai Marina and JBR. What years are you admitting for September 2015? We are opening with Years 1 to 6 in September, followed by Years 7 and 8 in 2016; then we will carry on launching new grades up to Year 13. How many places are available? At the moment we haven’t put a cap on the number of places. Ultimately there will be five classes in each year group and in the first year we are anticipating 500 students. However, if we have more we will consider March 2015
opening more classrooms because we are here to meet the demand. What will the school aim to excel at? A whole range of things: parents want high academic standards so we are definitely aiming for that; our sports facilities are just amazing – we have an eight-lane swimming pool and indoor pools so children can swim all year round; no other school has such high-tech equipment for the performing arts; and we are putting on a high number of after-school
activities to give children every opportunity – and these are included within the fee structure. Any final words? We are really embracing Taaleem’s mission statement to inspire young minds. The teachers are using inspirational teaching strategies that fully engage children in the learning process and that’s how we will accelerate their progress and make sure they really fulfil their potential and be prepared for the future, wherever that might be. dubaibritishschooljp.ae 11
Hartland International School This is the first venture into the education sector by Sobha Group, located in the Sobha Hartland area of Dubai, within Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum City. This much-anticipated school opens in September, teaching the National Curriculum of England via an innovative day-boarding model and international GCSEs, while graduates have the option to study for an IB diploma. The school boasts exceptional facilities for science, performing arts and sport, including an eight-lane swimming pool, a separate training pool for beginners, an indoor football field and rooftop courts for tennis and netball. Enrolment is already taking place at Sobha Sapphire Tower in Buisness Bay, from FS1 through to Year 13. hartlandinternational.com
Kings’ School Al Barsha This brand new school is the third in the Kings’ portfolio, which already has schools well established in Nad Al Sheba and Umm Suqeim. Headteacher Bill Turner says the challenge faced is to take the Kings’ culture that has been so carefully nurtured at the original Kings’ School Dubai site for the past nine years and successfully transfer it to these new premises – achieved through good 12
communication across the sites, teachers prepared to take great initiative, responsibility and leadership, and high levels of parental engagement. Kings’ School Al Barsha is taking on students from FS1 up to Year 10. kingsdubai.com
The Sheikh Zayed Private Academy for Boys Building upon the success and reputation of The Sheikh
Zayed Private Academy for Girls, established in Abu Dhabi in 2000, a boys’ branch will open for the academic year 2015/2016. This inclusive school is taking on boys and girls from KG1 to Grade 3, and boys only from Grades 4 to 7, teaching a US Curriculum with a strong Arabic, Islamic and UAE National approach. It will eventually expand through to Grade 12 to meet demand in the future. zayedacademy.ae
Have happy, healthy children
Making P.E. fun is the key, says Safa Community School headteacher Andrew Prosser These days, ’modern life’ can mean that children are a lot less active. With so many opportunities to watch TV or play computer games, and with so much convenience and fast food available, they don’t move about as much or eat as well as they should. A majority of children today could grow up with dangerous amounts of fat in their bodies. This can cause life-threatening diseases as well as emotional issues like low self-esteem and body image related issues. Active children are happy children. They like running around and having fun. In fact, children aged five to 16 need to do at least 60 minutes 14
of physical activity that gets their heart beating faster than usual. And they need to do it every day to burn off calories and prevent them storing up excess fat in their bodies. It also keeps their bones healthy and encourages muscle strength and flexibility. Being active is all about having fun. If they don’t enjoy it, they won’t keep it up. Children all deserve to spend some time doing something they enjoy – so, by providing them with a range and variety of activities they can find something they really love. As part of our drive at Safa Community School to have happy, healthy children we try to expose them to as many different activities as possible. During our recent ‘Health Week’ the children had the opportunity take
Kids aged 5 to 16 need to do at least 60 minutes of physical activity every day part in a range of fun and exciting activities that helped to promote a healthy lifestyle. These included rock climbing, trampolining, biathlon (swimming and running), yoga and cross-country, all experienced on the school campus. The fun was extended to our parents through a Boot Camp at the school. Not only did this help our parents meet their weekly exercise targets but it was a great motivation for children to see their parents take part in a physical activity. safacommunityschool.com
You are what you eat Chefs go back to school to tackle childhood obesity Almost 18% of children aged between two and 15 have grown clinically obese in the last decade, and 19% of the UAE population lives with diabetes – a health risk brought on by inactive lifestyles and weight gain. These are worrying facts. Now an innovative healthy eating initiative has launched in Abu Dhabi, raising awareness about childhood obesity with a hands-on approach to food. The UK’s Royal Academy of Culinary Arts has partnered with Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide to bring its Adopt a School programme to the UAE. Le Royal Méridien Abu Dhabi is the first hotel to take this on, ‘adopting’ Pearl Primary School. “Sourcing food as close to
It’s important that kids understand where their food is coming from nature is the key to eating healthily,” says Justin Galea, executive chef and director of food and beverage at Le Royal Méridien Abu Dhabi, leading the initiative. “Generally, if it comes in a packet or a jar then it has been processed and it is more likely to have nasty additives and preservatives that aren’t good for the body. Not to 16
mention the hidden salt and sugar to make the foods taste better. “It’s important that kids (and parents) understand where their food is coming from and how it’s being prepared in order to make healthy choices that are going to give them the bodies and the brains they need to stay active and focused, now and into the future.” At this initial stage the programme is partnering with primary schools, as learning about the benefits of healthy eating at a young age will
have the greatest impact, explains the chef. Each session is 45 to 60 minutes, held at the school in a normal classroom setup. Parents are encouraged to join in, too, so families can learn about healthy eating together. A trained chef will lead each session with a flipchart and real examples of food, teaching kids about different tastes, healthy foods and their origins. Six sister hotels have also joined the initiative, ‘adopting’ schools across the capital. chefsadoptaschool.org.uk
