It’s all about MAINTENANCE Whether you’re travelling or staying in the countr y this summer, maintain and protect your home to prevent a hike in bills
Cool the area
Turning off the air conditioner might seem like the most obvious thing to do when going away, right? Wrong! “It’s crucial to leave your A/C on - either on thermostat or manually to a higher temperature,â€? says Sean Blaikie, Operations Manager at MPlus (mplus. ae). “Leave all the doors at home open to ensure circulation, so you don’t return to a stuffy furnace. This helps prevent the formation of mould and condensation, DQG SURWHFWV Ă RRULQJ GRRUV DQG VXUIDFHV made of wood, which tend to be easily affected.â€? Colin Thomas, co-owner of the maintenance company Jim Will Fix ,W MLPZLOOĂ€[LW DH UHFRPPHQGV VHWWLQJ the temperature to 27C, to keep indoor plants alive and avoid moisture. The air conditioner needs to be cleaned and maintained every few months, especially for those living in villas, so make sure to get it checked for smooth operation through summer.
Stop uninvited g uests
Creepy crawlers and insects are about to visit your home this summer. Sean suggests preventing pests from breeding by ensuring the bin is sealed properly, and trash emptied out regularly. “If there happens to be bones, meat or any kind of edible content, which shouldn’t be left inside the trash for more than 24 hours, it can lead to some serious infestation - especially due to heat,� says Sean. He also recommends draining plant pots, and buckets or bowls of stagnant water frequently, to avoid insects from gathering.

Before your travels, empty out the refrigerator and remove all perishables, even if the fridge is going to be kept on while away. Switch off the refrigerator if you are travelling for more than ten days, and defrost the freezer thoroughly. Sean suggests leaving the door slightly open to prevent mould or stench. Your garden or backyard patch is sure to suffer without water. Sean recommends investing in a soaker hose which leaks water through its porous surface. Set it on a timer to keep the soil hydrated without wastage of water. Colin further agrees, and suggests timing the irrigation system during night to minimise evaporation. If possible, continue your gardening service while away as well.

Clean up the garage by getting rid of hazardous materials like paints and solvents, which are heat-sensitive. Make sure to clean up any grease spots from FDU à XLGV DQG NHHS KDQG–and power– tools away from children’s sight.
Keep burglars at bay A dark house is a clear sign that the owners are away over the summer, making it an invite for burglars. “Install deadbolt locks for added security,� says Dimitar Popov, Buyer for DIY at Ace. He also recommends installing motionsensor lights in the garage or backyard to detect intruders and alert the control panel (if you have one), so that you are made aware instantly while away.

Cover and protect
Avoid dust collection on your outdoor furniture. Bring all furniture items indoors if possible, or cover it up well so that it doesn’t get damaged or faded with the heat.
Prevent leaks
The water heater should only be switched on a few minutes before you need it. To be honest, we live in a country where hot water is available all the time, even without turning the switch on. However, it is still important to switch off and unplug the microwave, television, and any other plug points when not in use. “Unplug devices or switch off the main power when done, as the device still continues to draw on energy which can continue to increase your electricity bill,� says Sean.

he Dahmash family is wholeheartedly rooted in interiors and design. Dina Dahmash, creative director and founder of Dina Dahmash Design and daughter of Isam – owner of The Rug Company and Andrew Martin – designed the four-bedroom Jumeirah villa, that’s sited close to Kite Beach. “We have been living in this house for ten years now, and at the moment it’s just my parents and me at home,” says Dina, a British national with Palestinian heritage. The house has a contemporary feel on the outside and this continues indoors, with a burst of colour seen in the artwork, accessories and furniture. “The design inspiration was for it to have a very eclectic feel. I wanted each piece to have a story of its own and for it to somehow blend together to create a charming and comfortable living space,” Dina tells us. Accessories like vases, union jack cushions and an armchair, candles, books, black and white portraits, a large sketch of Elvis Presley, and coffee tables used as side tables are all part of the carefully curated interiors. Dina was given full authority to design the home, but there are touches here and there from her parents. “Both of them are very much into interior design and together

The inspiration was for the home to have an eclectic feel we make a great team,” she says. Downstairs the house features an expansive living room with a mix of modern and antique pieces. Dina tells us that the accessories have become the main focal point, adding vibrancy to the space. We notice comfortable cushions on the plush hounds tooth and light grey sofas, complementing the white and black leather chairs that sit beside it, and the round table in front. The asymmetrical furniture arrangement VRPHKRZ ÀWV ZHOO LQ WKLV VSDFH DQG JLYHV it dimension. Pops of colour are also noticeable in the striking orange chair and the gorgeous armoire that Dina and her mother found at an antique Chinese shop on Jumeirah Beach Road. The tiling all over the house was never revamped, but the pale copper colour goes well with the furniture pieces and art. A stroll through the house brought to our attention the use of wallpaper. transform the space instantly, while adding a wow factor to the room, which is why it is installed in the TV area and bedrooms. As with most homes, lighting is imperative, and the Dahmash family JRW WKHLU Ă€[WXUHV IURP )ORV /LJKWLQJ ´7KHUH LV QRWKLQJ UHDOO\ VSHFLĂ€F WKDW , was looking to get out of it, I just wanted each piece to have something different,â€? she says. Movie posters (from Andrew Martin), art pieces, photographs and sketches are literally seen in every nook and corner of the double storey villa. A lot of them are sourced from Cuadro Art Gallery, and collected during travels as well. Dina tells us her favourite piece is a series of photographs near the dining table, which were taken by young Palestinian street kids. “These are sentimental to me as I have a close connection to Palestine. I love the fact that kids below the age of 11 took them, and that each picture has so much meaning,â€? she says, as she speaks of the black and white photos fondly. Rugs are naturally part of the home dĂŠcor, and all the pieces are from The Rug Company. Dina’s top tip for picking a rug is to always choose one after selecting a colour scheme, DQG EX\LQJ WKH IXUQLWXUH ´, Ă€QG WKDW this way you have more freedom with the colours and pieces. I tend to make sure the rug is fully covering the coffee table and has a border around it which can either be tucked in or kept sitting outside of the couch.â€?
The interior designer loves travelling and has sourced most of the furniture on her trips to Italy, Spain, India, China and UK. It’s the one thing she looks out for, as she appreciates the quality of furniture made available around the world. Downstairs the villa also has a spacious kitchen – although we don’t speak much about it as it was never re-designed – a garden, and a lounge area across the staircase where a giant colourful poster of a James Bond movie brings the wall to life. Three bedrooms take up the top à RRU DQG 'LQD WHOOV XV WKDW WKH PDVWHU bedroom has a contemporary, elegant scheme. Her room on the other hand is à RRGHG ZLWK QDWXUDO OLJKW DQG IHDWXUHV D YHU\ IHPLQLQH ZDOOSDSHU ZLWK à RZHUV a bed cover adorned with hummingbirds, D EXWWHUà \ UXJ DQG EDVLFDOO\ D ZKROH ORW of purples and golds. A minimalist brown and white dressing table offsets the colour all around, making the space chic and relaxed. Looking around the villa, and the neighbourhood, it’s clear why the Dahmash family chose this area to live in. It is calm, slightly away from the hustle and bustle of Jumeirah Beach Road (the villa is tucked just behind it), and just a hop, skip and jump away from the beach. For Dina, who splits her time and career between Dubai and London, the villa’s location near the beach is a huge draw, and she walks across the road every opportunity she gets. www.bhomes.com | JULY 2015

200ml skimmed milk 1/4 tsp saffron 110g apricot purĂŠe 100g milk chocolate

1. Boil the milk and saffron to release an aroma. Set aside to infuse for 10 mins. 2. Pour the mixture over the chocolate, and warm up until the chocolate melts. Blend for 30 secs and serve hot or chilled.
MARAKESH MINT Serves 2
320ml skimmed milk 6g Marrakesh mint tea leaves 100g white chocolate 2g peppermint paste
1. Mix the milk and tealeaves together, and refrigerate overnight. 2. Strain the milk to remove all the tealeaves. Weigh the milk and top up with fresh milk until it weighs 320g. Boil and pour over the white chocolate. Blend for 30 secs and add the peppermint.

320ml full fat milk 80g milk chocolate 1 / 4 va n i l l a p o d beans 50g dates, seedless
1. Chop and boil the dates with the milk, and beans, until the dates become soft. Blend and strain the mixture to remove the date skin. 2. Weigh and top up with milk to make it 370g. 3. Place the chocolate in a pan and pour the mixture over. Warm until the chocolate melts, and blend for 30 secs. Serve hot or cold.
APRICOT HONEY AND SAFFRON JALLAB Serves 2
400ml water Pinch of saffron 80g dried apricots, chopped into small pieces 3 0 0 g s u ga r 80g honey 3g lemon salt Club soda Slivered almonds Golden raisins
1. Add water and saffron to a pan, followed by the apricots. Simmer on low for 4 hrs, and add water if it reduces. 2. Strain the liquid into another bowl and add sugar, honey and lemon salt. The reason why sales prices have dropped is due to major factors like a result of the Central Bank’s directive, where all the UAE banks reduced the loan-to-value ratio from 85 to 75 per cent. To add to this, the Land Department transfer fees increased in November 2013 from two to four per cent, doubling the cost of each transaction. Obvious factors like the international oil crisis, and economic
slowdown globally, are also factors contributing to decrease in real estate activity. Even though all these factors are being considered for buyers at the moment, end-users who purchased the house a while back and are now living in it haven’t been affected as much. Furthermore, a drop in rental value isn’t being seen as yet.
