Wall furnishings from Paul Montgomery that have just arrived in the UAE. The studio specialises in Chinoiseries – painted with centuriesold techniques – and European panoramic murals, giving walls a stunning, elegant effect. Furthermore, the murals are in a style reminiscent of classic wood-block prints found in historic European houses. Give your home the look of an old world scene, ornate garden, or tropical paradise, or simply opt for a customised paper – you can change everything from base colours, to patterns and the design. Predominantly contemporary with accents of bright colours, combined with classic/traditional pieces. I believe personal style has a lot to do with who you are and where you’re from. Design is an extension of one’s character and ability to adapt.
I bought armchairs and pebble tables from France, which I absolutely love. When I travelled to Bali, I carried a stunning Àgurine back by hand, in fear of it being damaged. I also have a sketch of one of the gates into Jerusalem, Palestine, which is very sentimental to me.
GO -TO HOME-DÉCOR STORES Apart from Mosaique, especially for gifts like teapots and knick-knacks for friends, I love Aati’s range of Italian designer brands, B&B Italia for inspiration, Bo Concept for furniture that offers a great balance between quality and style, and IKEA for functional items and variety of materials, colours and choices of one particular item.
ALL-TIME FAVOURI TE INVESTMENT PIECE My Arco Lamp by Flos. I always wanted it, and collected a few pay cheques from my Àrst job, to buy this designer piece from Aati.
ONLINE V/S RETAIL STORE EXPERIENCE I haven’t tried online interior shopping as I’m very much a tactile person who needs to fall in love with a piece before buying it. I like, and need, to feel a fabric. I believe one needs to be satisÀed with textures and the overall feeling of large pieces that we may consider as investments. Personally, I like to play it safe and know 100% what it is that I’m buying.
TOP TIP Plants! Being natural they literally add life to any interior space. Just be careful with the height and shape

of what you pick. Not only are they arguably good for you, but you will most deÀnitely Ànd that a plant will instantly work magic in your room.
FAVOURITE COLOUR COMBINATION Pink and Grey – they are feminine and masculine colours respectively, and deÀnitely compliment each other.
AN ITEM TO SPLURGE ON Accent furniture and accessories, as they don’t get damaged easily through wear and tear. Artwork is another item you can splurge on easily, and with the many art galleries and exhibitions here in the UAE, we are literally spoilt for choice.
ONE ITEM TO SAVE ON Curtains or shades. It’s important to keep them simple, especially if you have a nice view, or natural light from outside – don’t hide it. In my home, we have standard Ikea shades that are discreet and perfect.

IVORY FINISH Home Centre’s Angelina dining set in a pearl pink ivory setting, with two armchairs and ten seating chairs, is apt for those who entertain large groups. The elegant seating showcase intricate detailing on both sides, with comfortable cushioning, while the table’s mirror effect gives it a modern touch.
FUNCTIONAL SPACE Ikea’s all-white kitchen scheme is ideal for compact studios and one-bedroom apartments. It features a kitchen island which doubles up as a breakfast spot, table, and storage, with indoor plants and herbs adding a natural, eco-friendly element. Since the area is limited in an open kitchen layout, use drawers and cabinets for large appliances, pots, pans and crockery, and place a steel rod on the backsplash to hang spoons and a cutlery bucket.

ALFRESCO DINING It’s that time of year when you can Ànally enjoy the great outdoors over lunch and barbecues. Swap your plastic chairs or drab furniture for this Darlington wood modular set from ACE. The seating has a thick padded cushion, so you can linger around for hours without feeling uncomfortable. To give it a burst of colour, upholster the cushion, or accessorise with vibrant prints.
BLUSH TONES The Coliseum bedroom from Giorgio Collection at Interiors is chic, without being overly feminine. The set, complete with a dresser, night table, upholstered bench, and bed with an Italian frame, works for spacious rooms as each piece exudes grandeur. Dim lighting and a glass chandelier accentuate the warmth of the room.

THE HOW-TO GUIDE Nifty décor ideas to put your domestic skills to the test
ST YLE YOUR HOME LIKE A PARISIAN Step 1: Pick a neutral colour palette. Parisians usually keep their walls white, or opt for a light-coloured wallpaper, as the apartments are dark – unless located on the top Áoor of the building, where natural light Áoods the rooms. If you do want to paint, pick a statement wall in the kitchen.
Step 2: Keep an eye out for vintage Ànds. Paris is known for its fabulous Áea markets, which are packed with gorgeous crockery, linens, Áoral design teacups, lighting Àxtures, and artworks, amongst many other things. Make like a Parisian and hunt for unique Ànds.
Step 3: A look at any Parisian apartment will reveal a large thick rug on the Áoor, that ties the living room together, and blocks off noise made on the typical wooden herringbone Áoors. Opt for bright, warm colours like orange, or perhaps patterns to contrast the white walls.
20 OCTOBER-DECEMBER 2015 | www.bhomes.com
Step 4: Always keep a scented candle on your coffee, or bedside, table. Parisians love the glow, and aroma, that lends a cosy ambience, especially during the cold winter nights. Go for good quality musk, and fresh, natural scents that aren’t extremely overpowering.
Better Homes Magazine | HOME
GOLD FOIL FLOWERPOTS Step 1: Paint the adhesive onto the pot, on the area where you want the gold foiling – it’s best to cover the bottom half of the pot. Step 2: Set aside to dry for 10-15 minutes. Check by touching lightly with the tip of your Ànger. Step 3: Place the gold foil carefully on the adhesive, and stick it on. Foil is usually thin, and breaks easily, so apply it bit by bit. Step 4: Use a dry paintbrush to remove any excess. Step 5: Paint sealer all over the gold foil, making sure the edges are covered completely. Step 6: Once dry, place you herbs or plants in it.
MAKE A MASON JAR SHAKER Step 1: Use an old jam, pickle, or peanut jar, which has a steel lid. Step 2: Place a small nail over the lid, and hammer holes into it – about eight to ten. You can even make a Áower design on the lid with the holes. Step 3: Place powdered sugar, or Ànely crushed salt, into the container. Secure lid tightly and use.

he massive yellow villa at Khalifa Park, right across Eastern Mangroves, is where Laura De Bernardinis Benni’s home is located. The Italian/Swiss mother of twin boys (12) and a teenage girl (15) – who study at Cranleigh Abu Dhabi, just a 15 minute drive away on Saadiyat Island – lives with her husband and pet dog, and spends her days painting and crafting Áower-shaped soaps which retail under her brand, Essentials by Uma. A modern-day façade meets the eye as you arrive, but indoors it’s an amalgamation of Arabian and Asian inÁuences. The owners Àtted out the home with age-old style solid wooden doors and metal bolts, hand-painted tiles in every bathroom, a courtyard walkway with lanterns hanging off the high ceilings, enormous chandeliers, and mini alcoves as part of the living room wall, giving the expansive space a feel of centuries-old homes. Laura moved to Abu Dhabi three years ago from Beijing, where she lived for eight years. “I came to the city four times before we actually moved here, and every time we visited

I asked the agent if we could see the mansion. I think it was meant for us,” says Laura. With her, she bought along two 40-feet containers packed with every piece of furniture she acquired in China. “I love furniture, and sent a few pieces back home to Geneva as well when we moved,” she says. Walking through the house, eyes are drawn towards artwork and sculptures neatly placed all over. Laura has painted most of these herself, on Chinese silk and canvases, and picked up the rest from travels and art galleries. A stainless steel warrior from Chinese artist Ren Zhe stands right before the living room, acting as a diversion to the room in front, as part of a feng shui technique – she studied it, after developing an interest in China. Most of the furniture pieces are red, dark brown, and black. “Red is the colour of energy in Feng Shui,” she says, as she tells us about her family’s elements in the ancient art, and how most of the house has been arranged accordingly.

Almost all furniture items, accessories, and knick-knacks are from China, with the exception of a few – the heavy Indian door library piece, and dining table, made out of wooden doors ï from Heritage Touch in Abu Dhabi. When she isn’t painting, Laura loves a visit to the furniture warehouse in Mina Port, to scour vintage pieces that are later transformed to suit her home. “I found the small wooden door there, and my friend immediately told me it could be used as a dining table. We added the legs, and glass on top, and paired it with replica Ming dynasty chairs,” she says. She once picked up mini Chinese animal Àgurines at a Áea market, and got them framed vertically for a feature wall. Most of the pieces bought recently, or painted by her, are framed at Art Central for Fine Art Works in Abu Dhabi The kitchen, where Laura enjoys making pasta from scratch, is tucked towards one corner, and even this
door is composed of dark wood with metal elements. What she’s most proud of though, is the Ànishing of the bathrooms, each boasting hand-painted tiles, a backlit stone counter, and large mirrors. A lacquered divider sits in the lounge, behind which are myriad interesting features like a snooker table, literature corner, a sketch board, collection of calligraphy brushes with intricate details, and a daybed. Of the many fascinating sculptures in the house, the best are ones by upand-coming Chinese artists. The baby with riÁe from Guo Quipeng – sourced at an affordable art exhibition in China – Pinocchio print from Liu Ye, and the Taichi lady from Wu Jiahui, add a dash of humour and modernity to the otherwise classic, traditional setting. Her daughter’s room, furnished from Pottery Barn and Marina Home, is mostly white with pops of colours from celebrity posters plastered all over the wall, and accessories on the dresser and study desk. The boys share a room, and it’s Àlled with comics, storm trooper masks, action Àgures, and tons of blue. Laura’s bedroom is packed with wooden pieces as well, but the most striking is the retro, heavy-duty wooden table picked up from an old bar. The Áoor above comprises a spacious gym, used mainly by her husband and children, and near it is the second guest bedroom – one is downstairs near the kitchen. She loves picking up accesories on travels, but Ànds it hard restraining herself from buying furniture pieces. “I just can’t buy anymore because there’s no place to put it,” she says. On a trip to Istanbul, Laura found herself entering a rug shop, even though she didn’t need one. She left with eight, which are now
I can’t wait to host barbecues and dinners again at home placed in the family room, and lounge. The same happened in Russia, where she picked up a collection of lacquered black boxes with colourful paintings on each, made by young artists. The only section of the home, customised completely in the UAE, is the backyard that houses a large swimming pool, hot tub, and garden furniture from ACE. One feature that is instantly recognisable all over the house, is the large symbol on the pool back wall, which her husband created by joining the family’s initials together – this is used in her company branding as well. After our chat, a tour around the home, and trying to Àgure out my Feng Shui elements, Laura and I indulged in ripe, juicy dates pulled from her backyard, with a shot of espresso – the Italian heritage coming through. “The weather is getting better now, and my children have already started having parties. I can’t wait to host barbecues and dinners again. I previously held a masquerade party, and Thanksgiving dinner and it was lovely,” Laura tells us, as she talks about her love for home entertaining before we depart.
