Preciosa Lighting’s famous Pearl Curtain

Make a bright start Preciosa Lighting, (the brains behind the crystal trees at the Mandarin Oriental Jumeira, Dubai), has shed light on its predictions for 2020’s lighting trends. Gulf managing director Martin Fryzelka suggests going au naturel as “floral themes will be particularly popular this year”. Opt for natural finishes such as warm golds and copper to complement the earthy theme. In the bedroom, keep the mood relaxed with wall sconces as opposed to ceiling shades. preciosalighting.com

A MINDFUL HOME MAKEOVER

Furnish with a conscience with West Elm, Pottery Barn and Pottery Barn Kids

A

sign of the times, it’s no longer enough that furniture simply looks good – an increasing number of people want to know more about the items we are purchasing, where they have come from, and the impact they are having on the environment. Indeed, sustainability is no longer just a buzz word, but a commitment to caring for the planet, and a choice we make with every considered purchase. Taking their role as a global brand seriously, West Elm, Pottery Barn and Pottery Barn Kids are devoted to the cause, implementing strict standards for the way their products are made. Renowned for its high-quality furniture that teams modern styles with affordable price points, West Elm furniture and accessories not only look great, but they do good too. In

2014, it became the first homeware store to offer Fair Trade certified products. What’s more, the company has continued its dedication to fair wages, sourcing handcrafted pieces from a global artisan network. All the materials are mindfully selected, and this year it has pledged that 50 percent of all wood will be obtained from sustainable forests. The sentiment is mirrored at Pottery Barn, with information on how each of the products have been made clearly visible on the label. Many of the pieces have been handcrafted from recycled, re-harvested or responsibly sourced non-toxic materials. Plus, by embracing ethical labour practices, the stylish homeware brand supports Fair Trade, so you can rest assured that a portion of the proceeds is directly supporting the livelihoods of its creators.

At Pottery Barn Kids, children’s health is paramount, which is why the brand has created Greenguard Certified Products that contribute to clean indoor air. Each of the pieces carrying the Greenguard Gold symbol are made from materials with low chemical emissions and are screened for more than 10,000 chemicals, which are commonly known to pollute indoor air. When you purchase kids’ furniture here, you’re not only contributing towards a greener world but also ensuring a cleaner and healthier home for your family. WHAT’S IN STORE

O’DE ROSE THE STORY SO FAR: When Nadine Khoury moved to Dubai from Lebanon in 2008, she was left feeling uninspired by the shopping malls and the lack of Middle Eastern designs available. With a vision to create a shopping experience for the senses, she set up O’de Rose in a quirky Jumeirah villa. The premise was to showcase local designers and those emerging in the region to create an ‘Aladdin’s Cave of Wonders’ look and feel. For the last 11 years, the boutique’s distinctive identity has endured and the brand has grown. Expanding to an online shop in 2012, O’de Rose has become a go-to hub for pieces by local designers. THE LOOK: An eclectic mix of arabesque designs that make your home stand out from the crowd. WHAT’S NEW? ECO BRICKS x Better Living

FROM HUMBLE BEGINNINGS Do your bit for the zero waste movement by giving your plastic bottles a new lease of life

Children learning how to make Ecobricks

P

ouring the last slurp of your favourite drink into your glass, you’re left holding a large plastic bottle which, just as with the most of your rubbish, you toss into the bin never to think about again. Sadly, this waste product is now fated to join a barrage of non-biodegradable materials in the ground, each slowly releasing toxic fumes and chemicals into the natural environment. Fortunately, the owner of foldable furniture shop Casa-Elan, Ratna Sharma, is determined to rewrite the story of our

A dog kennel made from Ecobricks

disregarded bottles, giving them a new purpose in the local community. Ecobricks are formed by taking plastic or glass bottles and combining them with recycled concrete from construction sites, so when they are laid and encased in cob mortar, the blocks become a greener alternative to ordinary bricks. Once created, the Ecobricks are laid by Ratna and her team at Casa-Elan to create kennels for abandoned dogs and cats at animal shelters (another of Ratna’s passions). The concept is

also used to demonstrate the benefits of upcycling in schools. Once children have learnt how to form the Ecobricks, they can build structures for herb gardens or play-areas. In a bid to arm the public with knowledge on how to reuse their rubbish, Ratna also runs workshops, sharing her love of repurposing and living a zero waste lifestyle. You can donate your unwanted plastic and glass bottles directly to the scheme by contacting Ratna on: +971 55 312 4555 or by visiting zerowaste-uae.com bhomes.com | 21

Made you blush

Furniture Village, furniturevillage.co.uk

No longer reserved for little girls’ bedrooms, pink is the new neutral

It’s common knowledge that neutral colours create a calming ambience in the home. Joining beige, grey and white as a zen-inducing tone comes blush pink. “Pink can be a great neutral in your home,” says Nicole Butler of Nicole Butler Design (@ nicolebutlerdesign). “Muted tones of the feminine shade can bring warmth to a room without commanding all of the attention.” Read on for tips on choosing and combining shades in your home. bhomes.com | 23

TIP

Furniture Village, furniturevillage.co.uk

“Use pink to liven up a dull space by introducing subtle contrasts, such as a soft blush pink sofa in a white room, or a dusty pink throw on the bed in a fawn room. Statement artworks are an effective way to enhance a monochrome set-up, says Nicola.

24 | bhomes.com

WINNING COMBINATION “If you’re worried about pink looking too feminine or young in the home, combine the colour with a complementary tone,” suggests Nicole. “For example, I like to team blush pink with deep moody greys and matte blacks – pairings that exude sophistication and class.” The more muted hued pinks go perfectly with other pastel colours, such as mauve and peach.

TEXTURE MATTERS “When you’re accessorising a room, remember that texture can make a big difference,” says Nicole. “A pale pink pillow takes on a life of its own in a lush velvet or suede fabric.” Unleash your playful side by incorporating shades of pink that you may ordinarily shy away from, as “texture adds a layer of complexity and drama to an otherwise flat colour.”

PINK HARMONY “As you would when following any home interior trend, the trick to applying pink tones successfully is to harmoniously blend them with your existing décor,” Nicole advises. Start small by introducing accessories, that way you can play around with the colour in your space. KEEP IT SIMPLE “There are over 50 shades of pink, most of which work well together. You can combine multiple hues alongside natural textures and materials to strike the perfect pink balance without it becoming overbearing,” enthuses Nicole.

GROHE x Better Living

GROHE Blue Home

QUENCH YOUR THIRST Drink more water this year with GROHE

C

onsidering water makes up twothirds of our body weight, it’s no wonder healthcare professionals are constantly advising us to drink more H20. If 2020 is the year you’ve committed yourself to increasing your water intake, GROHE Blue Home makes it that bit easier. A revolution in drinking water, the built-in tap delivers filtered still or sparkling water at the touch of a button. Kind to the planet, good for your health and easy on the pocket, the smart device will help you to eliminate bottled water from your home for good. The smart device is functional and stylish too, in the form of sleek and slim kitchen taps. Tapping into its smart technology, users are notified through the GROHE ONDUS app when the filter or CO2 bottle needs replacing, meaning you won’t ever have to worry about running short. It’s healthy too, with GROHE research finding that those who use the water system drink up to 35 percent

more than users of bottled water. The Ultrasafe filter not only significantly improves the taste and removes chlorine, and pesticides from the water, but also eliminates bacteria, using stateof-the-art filter technology. The elegant GROHE Blue Home comes with different spout versions

that will fit any sink or kitchen. It is the symbiosis of refined, timeless design and innovative features that make it a pleasure to use. With its dual intuitive operation, normal mixed water is available as well as filtered, chilled and sparkling water. In addition to the duo version, GROHE also offers a mono model, which is equipped with intuitive operation. What’s more, it can be optimally installed as a supplement to an existing kitchen faucet. The GROHE Blue Home starter set consists of a tap and cooler with an integrated Ultrasafe filter and CO2 bottle. The compact water system fits into even the smallest kitchen – all you need is a cabinet measuring at least 40 centimetres wide to house the cooler. Plus, it’s higher capacity version, Blue Professional, is also available for smallto-medium offices and communal areas. Visit grohe-mena.com bhomes.com | 27

It’s wintertime in Dubai, and we’ve never felt so popular with friends and family arriving from all corners of the Earth. If you too are throwing open your doors to visitors, read our handy guide to creating a boutique hotel inspired guest bedroom. Invest in a great bed. As the bed will be a focal point of the room, consider making a statement with an oversized headboard or a four-poster design. Among our favourite places to shop are: Vox Furniture (voxfurniture.ae) for its Scandinavian style designs and Helmii (helmii.com) for its luxurious range of king-sized beds (you can even design your own online and get it delivered direct to your door – we say choose the high headboard with deep tufting for a hotel-style look and feel and opt for added built-in storage). Pick the perfect mattress. It may not be slept on for the majority of the year, but you still need to ensure you choose a comfortable, quality mattress so your guests can get a great night’s sleep. Helmii lets you test their mattresses for 40 nights and if you (or your guests) don’t love it you can get a full refund. King Koil (kingkoilme.com) is another firm favourite for its specialised

EVERYONE’S PILLOW PREFERENCE IS DIFFERENT SO GIVE YOUR GUESTS THE LUXURY OF CHOICE. WE SUGGEST HAVING TWO FIRM AND TWO SOFT PILLOWS ON THE BED. KEEP AN EXTRA SET OF MEDIUM PILLOWS IN THE WARDROBE SO IF YOU HAVE A FUSSY SLEEPER ON YOUR HANDS, YOU’LL HAVE ALL BASES COVERED.

GIVE WALLS THE WOW FACTOR

Paris Lattice, Chasing Paper

“Statement walls will give a boutique hotel feel, which is sure to wow your guests,” says Ash Young, interior stylist at Adore Décor DXB (@adoredecordxb). “You could opt for botanical prints on wallpaper, cushions or bedding to add a more tropical, holiday vibe.” “Removable wallpaper is a relatively quick way to upgrade your guest bedroom and create a show-stopping design moment,” adds Elizabeth Rees, founder of Chasing Paper (chasingpaper.com). “With our peel-and-stick fabric wallpaper, the installation process is easy. If you have a large bedroom, it can add warmth and cosiness; and if it’s a smaller space, you can trick the eye into thinking it’s bigger with the right choice of print.”

IKEA

MAXIMISE THE WARDROBE SPACE IN THE ROOM Make sure your guests have plenty of space to hang their clothes, tidy away their shoes and stash their suitcases. Before they arrive, check that the wardrobe is fully stocked with hangers fit for all types of clothing and accessories. If you don’t have existing shelving built in for shoes, IKEA’s clever hanging storage, such as the Rassla (Dhs39), which has five compartments, provides the ideal solution without you needing to spend a fortune on bespoke cabinetry. If your wardrobe is shallow and there’s not enough space under the bed for stashing suitcases, think about placing a large trunk at the end of the bed in which they can easily stow away their luggage.

Nail the lighting. When it comes to finding the perfect pendant or chandelier, the Huda Lighting showroom on Umm Suqeim Street (hudalighting.com) has a fabulous range of high-end designs while I Light You (ilightyou.ae) has an illuminating collection you can browse and buy online. Pop a lamp on the nightstand or plump for stylish wall sconces. This will allow your guests to read in bed and, more importantly, turn off the lights once they’re safely tucked in so they won’t be stumbling around in the dark in an unfamiliar environment. Dress the windows. Creating an environment for a good night’s sleep is key, especially if your guests will be battling jetlag. Black-out curtains or blinds are a must and you can buy them off the rack or commission a bespoke pair. Add tie backs for a more polished look and if the room is overlooked, make sure you add a net curtain to give your guests plenty of privacy. Style it up. Bedside tables, a fulllength mirror, and a clock are among

the basics that can help a room feel more finished, while a dressing table is a nice addition if space allows. Select some wall art that offers a sense of place – it can make a real difference to the guest experience. Drawdeck’s (drawdeck.com) fantastic range of prints, including its Dubai city map (from Dhs111) and Waiting for Summer pool print (From Dhs93) will help create a holiday vibe. Add the finishing touches. Make your guests feel pampered with some added extras that are akin to what they may find in a boutique hotel. “A basket brimming with miniature toiletries, a vase of fragrant fresh flowers and some scented candles are all thoughtful touches that will ensure that your guests have an enjoyable stay,” says Young. Add to that dressing gowns, slippers and a generous supply of fluffy towels and you’re sure to have happy campers. More welcoming touches include a stash of good books to read, as well as those all-important operating instructions for the air conditioning.

Ask the

DESIGNER

Stephany Hanna, interior architect and designer at Step Into Detail tells us how to have a hygge bedroom Styling by: Hiral Kapadia Photography by: Muthu Kumar

Stephany Hanna at home in The Springs

Get rid of anything that doesn’t make you feel happy – it’s the law according to hygge. You don’t need to splash out on expensive furniture. Simply choose pieces that you love, from a cosy knitted throw to a vase of fresh flowers. Hang fairy lights over the headboard for a sense of softness in the space. It may be trendy, but plain white walls won’t give you the cosy, contented feel you crave in a master bedroom. Choose a calming shade of blue or green for the walls and paint them for an instant style upgrade. I’m a fan of darker hues, which bring about a bolder change. Avoid pattered bed linen, which can make the room look messy. Stick to plain colours and natural, textured materials such as linen. Having too many cushions isn’t practical: stick to two large pillows at the back followed by two smaller ones and up to three scatter cushions. It’s enough for a boutique hotel style feel but won’t take you ages to move back and forth each day. Use a wicker basket to store any excess cushions in while you sleep. Adding art is an opportunity to show your personality – and you can easily do so on a budget. Choose photography you love rather than something you see commonly in other

people’s homes – I often download free photography from Unsplash to print and frame. Simply select a theme (my favourite is architecture) and create a story. Don’t be afraid to try new things – the ‘Wake Up’ print in my room that extends beyond the frame was very easy to do and adds character to the room. Having an old-fashioned tiled floor is a common bugbear in the UAE. If you’re stuck with unsightly tiles, a large rug can work wonders. And if you own the place or don’t mind spending a bit more money, Floorworld’s luxury vinyl planks, which click into place on top of your existing tiles, can make a huge difference to the look and feel of the space. When it comes to the finishing touches, a good mantra to keep in mind is “excuse the mess but I live here”. A great taste bedroom isn’t overly styled or streamlined but is a relaxing space that works for you. Make it practical and stylish by having your slippers laid out ready and task lighting that’s within easy reach of the bed. I’m not a fan of symmetrical side tables but you should have at least one while, lastly, a footstool or pouffe is handy for laying clothes on. Email info@stepintodetail.com or follow @stepintodetail

TIP

Those perfectly styled bedrooms we see on Pinterest aren’t necessarily what will make you feel nurtured and cosy in your own home. Find a style that speaks to you and create a retreat in which you can fully unwind.

HOW TO MASTER THE

KONMARI METHOD

The hit book, The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up by Marie Kondo, introduced us to an organisation practice that ‘sparks joy’, giving you extra motivation to streamline your abode. “The KonMari method declutters your home once and for all,” says Salam, a trainee consultant. “It’s important to complete the process in order as it takes you on a journey from the easiest category (your closet) to the hardest (sentimental items).”

2 “Start by tackling your closet,” says Salam. “Take every item off the hanger and out of the wardrobe, then hold each piece to see how it makes you feel – does it spark joy? If an item no longer makes you feel good, thank it for its time serving you and put it in a pile to donate. Only place items back into your closet that you absolutely love.”

Fold your clothes and stack them vertically so you can see all your options without having to dig around. In-drawer storage boxes or baskets will help keep everything in order.

How this villa in The Lakes was transformed into a European style home Styling by: Hiral Kapadia Photographs by: Muthu Kumar

“I wanted to create a clear European style, like something you’d find in Brussels or Paris, for our family home,” explains Nadia Sallustio who completely gutted and reimagined her stunning home in The Lakes. She bought the four-bedroom villa four years ago, together with her husband Fabio, and it took nine months of work before they could finally move in. “We modified everything. From the interior walls to the ceiling height and the windows. The only thing we kept were the outside walls,” laughs Nadia, who owns the stylish The Den home interiors boutique in Dubai. The sheer scale of the work, and the attention to detail with which it has been carried out, is evident in the villa’s elegant charm. Not their first rodeo, the couple (who have three children and a cat) had also renovated their previous home in The Meadows. “I’ve always been interested in designing homes,” explains Nadia. “When I was a child my favourite toy to play with was Barbie’s furniture. I used to design a big apartment on my parent’s dining room table, using my mum’s small cacti as accessories.” Bringing her lifelong passion for design to life, Nadia, who has a degree in Fine Art, drew and designed the whole house herself, sourcing all the materials needed to create her dream family home.

“I wanted the house to feel homely and friendly. Plus, I love using colour to create an ambience,” explains Nadia. “We entertain a lot, so we extended to create a conservatory dining room, which gives the kitchen an open feel. Interiors LLC took on the practical side of the renovation while I advised and styled.”

FLOWING FREELY

The living spaces flow effortlessly into one another with strategically placed windows emphasising the sense of movement. The kitchen seamlessly unfolds to the dining space, which is bathed in natural light due to its floor-to-ceiling windows.

Party in the back

With its design inspired by a humble tile, Shireen Humphreys’ self-styled Jumeirah Park garden has been transformed from a once-bland space into a hotspot for family-friendly social gatherings

“W

hen we bought our home in 2014, the back garden was little more than a sandpit,” laughs Shireen as she curls up on the outdoor sofa with a cup of herbal tea. “My husband and I are famous in our friend circle for hosting alfresco parties so it was important to make the space

well-geared for social gatherings.” The renovation started in 2016 and took around a year to complete. “The biggest task was relocating the swimming pool to a more central position, leaving space for an outdoor kitchen in line with the lounge area. We couldn’t get a digger into the garden so it had to

be hand dug, which was no mean feat.” It took around two to three weeks to complete. In that time, Shireen was busy falling in love with the tiles. “I took a shine to the blue, white and lemon Italian tiles that were shown to us by our contractor,” she says. The hitch? It would take five months to ship them to Dubai. “It seemed like a long time to wait but, for me, they were integral to the design,” justifies Shireen. “Plus, it allowed me to go ahead and work on weaving in my accent colours throughout the rest of the design.” Using small blue-hued tiles for the pool gives it a luxurious and inviting edge while a transparent

safety screen means the space is secure for little wanderers, without compromising on its style credentials. Another practical choice that has paid dividends has been opting for artificial grass. “There are so many great options available nowadays in terms of texture and colour and it doesn’t get hot under foot. It has been fantastic in terms of maintenance,” she adds. Most of the outdoor furniture was bought from La Veranda, with the concrete look dining table a savvy choice. “The wicker look doesn’t work for me as it can get burnt to a crisp under the Dubai sun,” says Shireen.

“However, it’s so heavy that we had to specify the exact spot that it was placed upon delivery as it wouldn’t be possible to move it again by hand.” “We have Bose speakers situated at various points around the garden so we can create a party ambience with music,” she says. “Lighting was another important aspect for me – the pergola is illuminated from within its pillars, which is really pretty at night.” The garden is lush with greenery and with spotlights leading guests along the winding garden path edged by large tropical plants, it’s clear to see that the party is always at Shireen’s.

HOW TO GROW A SIMPLE YET STYLISH TROPICAL GARDEN You can’t go wrong with a classic colour palette of green, pink and white. Shireen chose a mixture of frangipani, bougainvillea, banana plant, ficus and champa plant for a tropical ambience that is easy to maintain in the desert. Get a great gardener. It takes more than keeping the plants well watered to achieve a standout yard. Shireen’s garden is kept in check by a talented gardener Barbar Ali of View Flower Landscaping, 055 291 3542). UTILISE THE SPACE BESIDE THE WINDOW FOR A DESK AND REAP THE BENEFITS OF NATURAL LIGHT, WHICH STUDIES HAVE SHOWN CAN HELP TO AID CONCENTRATION AND BOOST YOUR MOOD

EXECUTIVE ESSENTIALS

T

here’s an increasing number of people working remotely, starting their own business, or working on passion projects at home – if you’re one of them, having a functional office space that ignites the imagination is essential. A quiet, light-filled zone that caters to all your needs is key in making sure you are at your most creative and productive. Our experts share their top tips…

FIND A COMFY CHAIR “Balancing comfort and aesthetic is very important,” says Clarice Claudette Jimenez, interior designer at Perfect Proportions (perfectproportions.ae). “Make sure you have enough space for everything to flow. Finding the right desk chair can prove challenging. Choose one that’s the right height for your desk and adjust it according to your body – ease of movement is key.”

CLAIM YOUR SPACE Even if you don’t have a dedicated office space in your home, you can easily turn a would-be bedroom into a cosy work area. “It’s easy to do. You just need to organise the furniture layout in a way that makes the space functional yet homely,” says Dubai based interior designer Vincenzo Visciglia of Aavva Interiors. “Utilise the space under the window for a desk – it doesn’t have to be massive.” There are loads of great options around or you can even have one custom-made by a local carpenter such as Art and Craft Furniture (located on Umm Suqeim Road.) If you’re converting a box room into an office, utilise the space with an L-shaped desk with shelves and cabinets around it. If natural light is lacking, you could look at the possibility of building in a window, if you can get the required permissions. Visciglia says: “You can convert a maid’s room into an office by simply opening up the doorway by swapping out the wood for a glass partition door that lets the light in.”

DO A SOUND CHECK “Making your office space acoustically sound will help shield you from noisy distractions, affording you the privacy you need to take calls at any time,” says Ranim Mortada, of Ranim Mortada Interiors in Dubai (@ranimmortada_ interiors). The easiest way to improve the acoustics is to layer up fabrics. Rugs are an easy solution and add a nice feeling under-foot, while fabric roman blinds or curtains will help, even if they remain open to allow for natural light. For something a little more powerful, she suggests acoustic panels, which can easily be installed on the ceilings and walls. “The most stylish acoustic panels can look like pieces of art,” she adds.

ILLUMINATE THE AREA Ranim says while natural light is ideal, there are many other ways to brighten up your space. “A good tip is to strategically place a mirror on the wall to reflect and maximise the natural light.

AMPLE OPEN AND CLOSED STORAGE OPTIONS AND A SPACIOUS WORKING AREA MAKE THIS A COVETED HOME OFFICE SET-UP

This, of course, has the added benefit of optically opening up the space.” She suggests avoiding downlights and spotlights in rooms with low ceilings, which can cause glare, discomfort and cast shadows. She suggests using dimmable spotlights instead for general lighting, warm white LED lighting and adjustable desk lamps.

GET ORGANISED “Clutter is your biggest enemy,” says Clarice. “Opt for built-in cabinets for storage and incorporate some open shelving on which you can place your storage boxes and ornaments. Less is more – don’t over-decorate your open shelves. Stack books according to their colour and size.” “Pretty labelled storage boxes can be a neat way to store away non-daily essentials,” agrees Ranim. “However, consistency is key and preferably all boxes should be of the same design. I particularly like IKEA’s monochrome storage boxes, which have a fabric finish. Mixing up storage containers with decorative items or books on shelves keeps the look personalised and airy. I like to place the boxes diagonally to each other for balance or line them up on the bottom shelf if the shelf cabinet is at floor level.” If you need to store away larger equipment, such as a printer, choose a low cabinet and make sure it has a cut out through which you can feed the cables.

52 | bhomes.com

WAVE GOODBYE TO UGLY CABLES It’s impossible to avoid cabling altogether, however hi-tech we become. Get your cord chaos under control with cord winders, tubing, or a wire organiser attached to the desk. This helps keep things tidy, safe and brings the mess off the floor. For the ones on the desk, invest in an attractive cord cover or feed the cords into a desk grommet – a hole in your desk which threads the cords under the desk and hides them.

DESKTOP BUDDIES

ADD PLENTY OF PERSONAL TOUCHES “Don’t be afraid to go all out by personalising your home office to your liking,” says Clarice. “This should inspire you to work even more. Think of your style, be chic and functional. A gallery wall styled with paintings, travel pictures and accessories is a great idea. Just be creative.” Don’t forget the greenery. Plants not only add a dash of colour and bring the outside in, but they help clean the air and studies have shown that being around them can aid productivity. Lowmaintenance plants include spider plants and peace lilies. And while your family may be just the other side of the door, photos can lend a sense of warmth when you’re trudging through the day’s tasks. You can display them on wire grids, peg boards or white boards.

FLAWLESS FINISH How Zen Interiors masterminded a showstopping modern villa for a family in The Meadows

H

aving bought this four-bedroom home in The Meadows from abroad, the homeowners were eager to put a fresh stamp on the property before moving in. As they were not yet in the country, the entire project was handed over to Zen Interiors, with a simple request – that the family move into a fully renovated home by the time they landed in three month’s time. Their main requirement was to have the house strike a balance between a classic and modern aesthetic with each room having the ‘wow factor’. To begin with, Zen Interiors took to creating a contemporary feel in the home’s infrastructure by revamping the dated features. The ceilings were altered in height and design to give the rooms a distinctly 21 st century feel. The traditional style staircase was renovated for a sleeker look and a custom walk-in wardrobe was added to the master bedroom. Finally, a partition wall was added to the living area, complete with a contemporary quilted design on one side where the TV could be mounted. All the structural changes provided a clear modern foundation from which to build on further. As the family didn’t plan on bringing any furniture with them, the Zen team had a blank canvas for which they could curate a collection of pieces that worked harmoniously together. Making the most of the fresh slate, the team brought in the classical feel requested through the furnishings and styling. Their in-house carpenters and tailors were called upon to create timeless furniture in neutral colours that would stand the test of time. Wanting to add extra interest with a brighter hue to the home, accents of walnut and metal were weaved throughout via accessories and furnishings. Taking into account the client’s desire for an elegant finish, all the pieces were designed and styled especially to uphold the high quality look and feel. So when the family arrived, they were delighted to be able to move straight into their dream home.

Wow’s the word

Merete Broen, head of the design department at Zen Interiors, shares her top tips for a luxe home... 1 Take the time to research the style you would like to achieve with the furnishings. Create a moodboard for the look that you want the home to spark when you walk in. This way you’ll have a better idea of what to search for when you’re shopping. 2 Select the general colour scheme before you start buying any items. If you want to create a timeless look, opt for a neutral palette that will see you through various trends and will always look classy. 3 Don’t be afraid to break up the colour scheme with accent pieces. This will help add character to your home and allows you to give your space a fresh look by updating these smaller furnishings when you fancy a change. 4 Selecting the right wallpaper and fabric is key to achieving a luxurious finish. It is often worth investing here if you’re after that ultrahigh-end look and feel. 5 Chrome fittings and accessories can add a polished feel to a room without breaking the bank. Plus, they go with most colour schemes and give a modern effect.
