Your essential guide to Dubai’s nurseries, schools & universities

...to the inaugural issue of Better Education, an annual publication for parents in Dubai. We have compiled this guide as a solid base of reference to help you make an informed decision about which of the city’s schools, universities and nurseries are best for your children. For further research on schools – both state and private – we recommend a visit to khda.gov.ae, where, from May 2009, you’ll find details of the Dubai Schools Inspection Bureau (DSIB), who have spent the past year grading schools from outstanding through to unsatisfactory.

How This Guide Works When we devised this guide it was our aim to make it as user-friendly as possible, so that the information is easily accessible. As such, the schools and nurseries are first listed in order of the curriculum they teach, then alphabetically. In the universities section, you’ll find a breakdown of courses followed by alphabeticallysorted listings of the institutions. We wish you luck in your search and hope you find the perfect place for your child!

Better Education Guide 2009-2010

Choosing your child’s nursery is one of the most important decisions you make on their behalf, and it’s essential you find a place where they’ll be happy and well cared for. Education expert Sarah Rogers gives her ten point plan of questions to ask to make sure you make the right choice…

1. Is the nursery safe?

Are children treated in a kind and caring way, Being sure that your child is in a safe with adults speaking to children in a positive environment is of paramount importance. manner? Every child is unique and deserves You can assess the level of safety as you look to be treated as an individual. Do staff know around the nursery. Is the nursery clean and hygienic? beginning and the end of the day to ensure Young children are vulnerable to germs and that children do not wander out with other not old enough to carry out hygienic children? How do visitors gain access practices independently. It is during the day? Check that important that there are plugs are covered, “Children procedures to minimise risks. that internal gates What routines does the are kept closed, need routines nursery have in place to and that fire and boundaries. ensure that everything is exit routes and Having clear behavioural kept clean – toys, equipment are expectations allows all bathrooms, kitchens, well signposted. children to enjoy being changing areas etc? Ask what the procedures are at nursery...” 4. Are parents valued? when a child gets Parents are their children’s key injured and whether educator. Does the nursery welcome there is a trained school this and value all parents, with regular contact nurse. What are the ratios of staff to and good communication? children – is the staff big enough to ensure good supervision?

5. Is the environment enriching? 2. Are the children well cared for emotionally? Is there a policy for settling in and do the children have one key person with whom they can have a trusting and safe relationship?

2

Is the nursery well maintained and bright? Are there examples of children’s work well displayed? Are the resources varied and adequate? Are there different areas in which the children can play?

6. Is there enough space to play? There should be adequate space – both indoors and outside – to allow children to play happily and safely.

7. What is the background of the staff? Are staff trained to work with young children, understanding how young children learn and how to care for each unique individual? Trained and experienced staff will be able to meet children’s needs by providing for the next step in their learning. Are the staff good role models to the children? Children learn by watching the people around them and will pick up on the ways that adults talk to each other and how they conduct themselves.

8. Are there behavioural expectations and routines? Children need routines and boundaries. They need to know what to expect and to understand how their day is going to progress. Having clear behavioural expectations allows all children to enjoy being at nursery. Parents can see evidence of this in the way that the days’ activities are structured, how the children behave and how staff respond to undesirable behaviour.

9. Are the activities age-appropriate? Young children learn best through being

involved in active play. Sick Note Through play Once you’ve children learn chosen your to be indenursery you pendent and need to give some try out their thought to what you’d ideas about do in the event of your the world, child being poorly – no making nursery will take your child on days that it’s sick, so connections think about alternative care between past arrangements in advance and present so that you have back-up learning. ready, willing and able to support you. Bear in mind Children that this can happen quite should be often when your child actively begins nursery – new playing for friends bring new germs! most of their day and not sitting for long periods of time.

10. How convenient is the location? If you can find a nursery that is close to your home that meets all the above criteria – even better! Walking to nursery is so much nicer than having to sit in traffic for long periods of time. If the nursery is further away from your home, ask if any other parents come from your area - it is good to have someone to lift-share with, either on a regular or an occasional basis.

Better Education Guide 2009-2010

Just how do you begin the search for a school in Dubai and what will your child’s education be like? To help you answer these pressing questions, we sought the views of some of the brightest educational minds in the city...

THE HEADS

Mr Andy Homden

Is the Principal of the Dubai British School

Mr David Impey

Is the Principal of Dubai International Academy

Mr Jason Kirwin Is Principal of Emirates International School

What advice would you give to parents seeking school places for their children? AH Narrow your search to the kind of curriculum you are looking for and be sure that the school’s location will suit the whole family, based on where you work and live. You can get a feel for a new school by looking at the website - which can tell you so much more about the school than what curriculum it follows. Does a strong sense of identity emerge? How current is the news and information? Then visit the school and see if your initial impressions are borne out by the experience of a visit.

DC I agree that a school’s website can be incredibly useful, prior to visiting the school.

4

Dr. Robert Spellman

Is Headmaster of the American Community School of Sharjah

Mr Geoff Turner Is Executive Principal of Wellington Int. School

Mr David Cook

Is the Headmaster of Repton School in Dubai

Plus, if you have friends in Dubai ask them what schools they recommend - the best recommendation for a school is word of mouth.

”Be sure that the school’s location will suit the whole family, based on where you work and where you live”

“Visit the school during term time... the best measure of any school is your view of it as a working place “

GT But websites can be superficial and are geared to attracting a visit, so be sure to visit the school during term time so you can see it in action. Undoubtedly the best measure of any school is your view of it as a working place. JK Echoing Andrew’s comments, checking to see if a school is in close proximity to where you live is important. Also, the Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA) - the regulatory body for schools in Dubai - is a valuable source of information for parents. DI I think it’s advisable to apply to at least three schools, in order of preference, as waiting lists, especially in elementary schools, tend to be very long. Another thing to consider is the possibility of an entrance exam. At my school, all students at all levels have to pass an entrance exam, so parents should enquire about the nature of it and ensure that their child is suitably prepared. RS I’d advise parents to become educated consumers of what your child is being taught. Anyone can buy a nice package but it is in the

“Without a doubt, I believe that expatriate children studying in Dubai schools experience learning in world-class environments”

delivery that makes the difference. When done correctly, schools are places where families feel welcomed and teachers feel empowered.

What particular benefits does a Dubai education offer to expatriate children? GT Schools here tend to work with families who are outgoing and achievement orientated – the families themselves are risk takers, people who want something a little different. So children mix with other positive, outward looking people with a can-do attitude. This helps develop self esteem and a confidence in trying new things.

JK Without a doubt, I believe that expatriate children studying in Dubai schools experience learning in world-class environments.

5

Children are provided with an opportunity to develop as internationally-minded people. Classroom learning is designed to draw upon the diverse backgrounds and nationalities of their fellow classmates and the academic faculty, with facilities that are continually being updated.

DI I’d say that children here have increased awareness of and respect for others, the ability to adapt and cope with change, and increased consciousness of global inter-connectedness.

found no place else in the world. Education is about rigor, relevance and rapport. A Dubai education will increase all three of these areas, with high expectations, teachers making the experiences highly relevant and everyone meeting new people.

AH Yes, let’s not forget the teachers. They are high flyers – talented, committed and they put the kids at the centre of what they do. They have initiative, taking the trouble to do things well and asking how we can do it better.

DC I agree. It gives them a fantastic

6

international perspective and encourages them to see the world rather than an insular view of just one country. It’s a great experience and will help build their confidence.

What is done by Dubai schools to ease the educational and cultural transition of children and parents moving to Dubai from abroad?

RS It’s all about discovery and a Dubai

GT I guess each school is different, but we

education provides opportunities that can be

have a team of staff dedicated to new parents

and we have briefing workshops where we deal with the educational context we deliver, so people understand our curriculum and assessment process. We try to review this regularly with parents.

AH Well, changing schools is never easy, and a good international school knows this and acts accordingly. It can be difficult. There is a far higher student turnover in the international school population than at home. The important thing for any parent is that they must not hesitate to contact the school if there are any concerns whatsoever. Good schools give parents the confidence to do just this.

JK Cultural transition issues are identified early as part of our school’s welfare structure. And the most important element is that staff members are always available to children and parents to discuss matters arising from cultural transition and moving to Dubai. DI The IB curriculum that DIA follows throughout is itself an amalgamation of teaching practices from different national curricula, which makes it easier to integrate students

“Changing schools is never easy, and a good international school knows this and acts accordingly”

“Classroom learning is designed to draw upon the diverse backgrounds and nationalities of the children’s classmates”

from a variety of educational backgrounds. A well-structured system of academic monitoring and pastoral care ensures that students very quickly settle in and start to achieve in their new environment.

DC At Repton we carry out an induction not only for students but also for parents before they begin, to help ease them into their new surroundings. There is always a member of staff available to provide help and guidance to students to ensure they settle in as quickly as possible both socially and educationally.

RS Before they’ve even arrived I tell all my staff that the last part of their job description is “Camp Counselor”, meaning that our jobs extend to welcoming all into their new home. From the moment we start interviewing people we make it clear that any question can be asked and answered.

Better Education Guide 2009-2010

It was often the case that the teaching programme of choice at international schools was the UK national curriculum. But more and more schools are now adopting the International Baccalaureate (IB). So how do the two compare? We asked an experienced teacher of each curriculum for their views…

THE EXPERTS International Baccalaureate

UK Curriculum

Michael Bloy is IBDP Coordinator at JESS Arabian Ranches. Prior to his current posting he taught at UK state schools for 13 years.

Margaret Atack is Director of International Schools at GEMS. She joined GEMS in 2005 after many years teaching at the highest level in the UK.

How flexible is the curriculum in terms of allowing children to specialise in their favoured subjects? MB The IB offers a very broad curriculum,

As students move through the key stages there are increasing opportunities for them to follow their preferred areas of study.

with students choosing subjects across six areas; literature, modern foreign languages, social sciences, experimental sciences, mathematics and the arts. The structure of the course is also relatively flexible, meaning that students can specialise in various areas, choosing two sciences or two arts subjects etc. should they so wish, whilst retaining a broad and balanced programme of study.

Are there social, cultural or community elements to the curriculum? MB ‘Internationalism’, or in today’s context

MA The UK national curriculum is a prescribed curriculum. However, good schools underpin this curriculum by ensuring that it is skills-focused, so as to ensure that the skills and competencies required for living and working in today’s society are fully developed.

8

‘Globalism’, underpins the learning and teaching that occurs in the IB Diploma Programme. All subjects have to include aspects which encourage students to understand their surroundings and the world in which they live. Students are required to actively apply this knowledge through the CAS (Creativity, Action and Service) programme, which is a compulsory element of the IB Diploma Programme. The CAS requirement takes seriously the importance of life outside of the academic world for the benefit of others in the wider community.

“Universities actively recruit IB students ahead of students who have studied other pre-university programmes”

“Personal, social, moral and cultural education has a high profile throughout the (UK) curriculum”

athletics, dance and gymnastics. But it doesn’t have to end there. GEMS schools, for example, operate a range of extra-curricular activities, including golf and horse riding.

MA Personal, social, moral and cultural education has a high profile throughout the curriculum. In addition, GEMS’ core values give priority to the development of leadership qualities, world citizenship, universal values and forward thinking, so you get a very rounded education.

How does sport factor in to the curriculum? MB Sport enters into the IB curriculum in a variety of guises and there are different ways in which sport can be undertaken. Students can learn a new sport, such as rock-climbing, or they may wish to share and apply their knowledge and love of a particular sport by studying for a sports leader award and coaching teams lower down the school.

MA Physical education is a compulsory element of the UK curriculum. It covers games,

What sort of qualifications can you gain through the curriculum, and how are they viewed by international universities? MB The IB Diploma Programme is just that: a programme of study. This means that students gain one qualification when they leave – the IB Diploma. There is much anecdotal evidence to suggest that universities worldwide actively recruit IB students ahead of students who have studied other pre-university programmes, due to the rigour of the course and the thinking and research skills with which it equips students to succeed at university.

MA The UK national curriculum grants students the opportunity to obtain ‘A’ levels, which are effectively a universal currency, as with them students can enter prestigious universities across the globe.

Better Education Guide 2009-2010

While compiling this guide for the parents of Dubai, we came across the work of THE Onederworld, THE One’s campaign to aid overlooked communities across the globe. And having identified the education of children as a cornerstone of their work, we were keen to champion THE One’s campaign in the belief that an education is the right of everyone. This is the story of their work… “It’s hard to explain the emotions that welled up within me when we were met by the entire village of nearly 500 people, who had spent the last six months building a 3.5km road to the village, just in order to welcome us,” blogged Thomas Lundgren of THE One, remembering his journey to the Pimbiniet community in Kenya, the first village to benefit from THE Onederworld programme. “It’s amazing how people that in our eyes, and according to our society, have so little, [have] so much more happiness to give.”

10

Born of THE One’s desire to help shape a better world, the big idea of THE Onederworld is a ‘one-on-one store-village adoption programme’, which basically means that each of THE One’s stores will eventually support a village, working with the villagers to enhance their community. Which villages will they choose? “We are focusing on neglected regions in the world where our employees come from, our manufacturers are based or wherever it just makes sense to help out,” reasons Thomas. And that means places like

The Lundgren family visited Pimbiniet to kick off THE Onederworld’s first project in conjunction with Free The Children. Here they are with Craig Kielburger, founder of Free the Children

After Pimbiniet, Kenya, where problems are rife, including child labour, exploitation of minors and minimal opportunities for girls. But this isn’t a simple handout. On the contrary, each village will work hard in harmony with THE Onederworld

Before

“We are focusing on neglected regions in the world where our employees come from, our manufacturers are based or wherever it makes sense to help out“ volunteers as it bids to become self-sufficient within five years. If the programme is to succeed, education will have to play a pivotal role – and so it will be given the support it needs. For a start, THE One will not only fund the building of a school in each village – which it hopes will become the cornerstone of the community – but also provide the help

and resources necessary for the school to secure teachers’ salaries and purchase educational materials, such as desks, chairs, uniforms, sports equipment and books. The things that are a given for our own children, but the realisation of a dream for others.

HOW YOU CAN GET INVOLVED

If you’d like to support THE Onederworld in its quest to provide a better education, there are various ways to do so. Simply buying something from THE One will help – it’s their goal to operate 99 stores by the year 2020, and for every store opened another village will be supported. But you can also make a simple donation or, if you wish to provide something other than financial support, you can accompany THE One’s staff on a school-building trip to one of their villages. Smart Childrens Nursery

Set up in 1997, Smart Children’s Nursery is a lively haven in a quiet street in Al Jafliya, not far from the World Trade Centre. It offers kids excellent standards of care, with a team of British, South African and Australian staff teaching the British curriculum. The Nursery is well set up for working mothers, offering a crèche for babies from just one month old. Older children take part in painting, colouring and music, both in a group and one-to-one. They are also given experience in the computer room and taught reading and writing skills, through the use of phonetics and flashcards. Smart Children’s Nursery offers field trips in winter, as well as karate, ballet and movement to music. It gives kids regular swimming sessions and has an annual sports day and concert, attended by parents.

British Institute for Learning Development in association with the

St Andrews International School

The Creative Approach to Schooling The British Institute’s Sensational Learning Programme is based on the belief that children’s learning capabilities can improve where children receive personal coaching to develop the sensory systems of the mind and body. Our research shows that intelligence and cognitive performance can significantly increase even within one year. St Andrews College International, the parent company of the British Institute, is a registered international school with FES - the management company for the Royal Dutch Shell Schools - and uses the IPC - UK curriculum. The IPC allows us to motivate children toward achieving academic skills and their personal goals. It also allows us to develop their ‘talent’s so the children can increase their ability for intellectual reasoning.

Five things you need to know about…

The British Institute for Learning Development 1. Who set up the British Institute?

and stimulate the brain, the more parts of it will become involved. The results of the Institute’s two year study speak for themselves – the individual coaching the 62 children involved not only increased their intelligence, but stimulated their creativity, concentration and ability to retain knowledge. This research has now been accepted for publication by a leading American University.

2. Who does the British Institute help?

4. What kind of facilities and staff are there at the British Institute?

The British Institute for Learning Development was set up in 2002 by Dr Christopher Reynolds and his wife Sheena Reynolds. They recognised a definite need for an educational institution that focused its emphasis on helping children with learning difficulties. The British Institute is the first and only schooling programme to do so in the UAE.

Children who experience learning difficulties. The Institute firmly believes that a child’s talent can be developed and encouraged by focusing on their cognitive skills, which in turn will help increase their intelligence and learning capacity. Learning is entirely dependent on how effectively your brain works and the brain can be moulded and stimulated in certain areas to help achieve better results. As the British Institute delivers personal coaching to your child, the education is tailored to each child’s needs.

3. What scientific studies can support the British Institute’s philosophy? Between 2006 and 2008 the British Institute made a scientific study of the effectiveness of Sensory Integration Theory in developing cognitive ability and intelligence. As the brain processes information, it passes through sensors which sends the necessary signals to adapt and accept it – a process that most of us know as ‘learning’. If the brain fails to achieve this process it is a sign that the individual has a learning difficulty. The more we think

The facilities and services at the British Institute are extensive. Not only do they offer programmes such as speech therapy and reading development, but they also deliver a high standard of teacher training. After-school programmes are available alongside Child Development workshops for parents and teachers. The staff at the British Institute are dedicated to helping each child individually. Therapy staff include: occupational therapists, educational psychologist, speech therapists, teachers, music and reading specialists.

5. How do I get in touch and what is the process to enroll my child? The British Institute is more than happy to help you with your queries and eager to show off the superb facilities. Simply email reception@british-ild.com or call 04 394 5907 to arrange an appointment. The British Institute is able to assess your child and can come up with the best possible educational plan and coaching to help your child achieve the highest level education. 15

RACHEL HAMILTON, PARENT - REPTON (P57) “On speaking to the staff they seemed intelligent, professional and I felt that they genuinely cared about their students. Facilities are fantastic, particularly in the nursery - they have so much for the under-5s, it is incredible. Even the 3-4s are given proper Arabic, PE and music lessons. They seem to understand how to bring out the best in each child: the teachers are fantastic.” 43
