WELCOME TO THE AUGUST ISSUE
I
t seems there’s no escaping the heat this summer. Those of us who are heading to Europe for their holidays will be experiencing record-breaking temperatures and the longest heatwave on the continent since 1976. With this in mind, we’ve decided to embrace the heat in this month’s issue of Betterhomes magazine, with some Club Tropicana vibes (page 27) and kitchen inspiration (page 34). We’ll help you cool down, too, with shades of fresh mint (page 19), top tips on reducing direct sunlight in your home from interior designer Rhian Clarke (page 25) and our edit of stylish pitchers (page 68). We were also lucky enough to tour a couple of dream homes for this issue. Carlo Nassif, managing director of Graniti Building Materials, showed us his Jumeirah Golf Estates villa, with Nemr Sidani of In Design, revealing how he created such a stunning home interior (page 38). Further afield, interior decorator Lucinda Loya had a different set of challenges for styling her own family home in Kentucky, USA (page 46). And if you’re looking for a characterful villa in a family-friendly neighbourhood, don’t miss our guide to Jumeirah Park (page 53).

KITCHEN CONFIDENTIAL
If you’re looking for some kitchen inspiration for a small space, then look no further than Kim Lewis’ tiny 560 sq. ft. home in south Austin, Texas. The interior designer, perhaps best known as the lead designer behind ABC’s Extreme Makeover, celebrates small spaces, with her eclectic, whimsical and efficiently designed home. In the kitchen specifically, Kim aimed to design a space that matched form and function, incorporating elements from the past and present. Reclaimed wood flooring was salvaged from a 1960s house in East Austin, Bluestar and Big Chill appliances are reminiscent of the ’70s and a Kohler sink and Silestone countertops add a modern, practical touch. “My husband and I live outside of town, so we cook at home a lot,” says Kim. “And durability is everything in a small space.”

“Abstract design transcends a singular style,” explains Martin Waller, dubbed the ‘Indiana Jones of design’ and the founder of interiors brand Andrew Martin. “It is an amalgamation of eras, cultures and looks until there are no longer boundaries. Start with one piece, whether it be your childhood teddy bear or a singular flick of colour in a painting on your wall, and play around with it, using materials and shades that explore the possibilities of clashing and coordinating to let the piece tell its story. “Don’t hold back. More is more in terms of layering textures and hues. Mirror and metallic finishes, meanwhile, play with a sense of reality, surrealism and reflection.”

Colour coordinate your books, if possible, for a beautiful effect, and let the colours and materials from the surrounding room lead the direction of accessory choice. Use different scales and heights to add a sense of drama. You can personalise the bookcase by using photo frames, accessories collected from your travels, special gifts from loved ones and inherited family pieces.”

MY LITTLE BLACK BOOK FOR RUGS: Local brand Infiltrada’s (@infiltrada_ interiors) range of hide rugs are lifetime pieces in the most amazing colours – think emerald, cobalt blue, lavender and teal. My other go-to local brands for bespoke dhurries and custom carpets are From Jaipur with Love (fromjaipurwithloverugs.com) and The Home Boutique (thehomeboutique.com). These ethical suppliers employ artisans.
FOR HOME SCENTS: Rhian Clarke, founder of Rhian Clarke Home LLC I have a small, awkward-shaped, ground-floor washroom. What tips do you have for maximising this space? Washrooms are typically small spaces, but can be very easily transformed to give the illusion of being more spacious. Using the same tiles in a large size on the floor and walls will give a more streamlined look, while the installation of a full wall mirror behind the countertop makes it look like the space has doubled. Choose your sanitaryware carefully: a wall-mounted WC will take up less space than a floor-standing WC, and the use of a countertop basin will free up space underneath for storage. Keeping the room uncluttered is also key. Finally, see if the door to the room can be re-hung to open outwards rather than inwards. The living space in my villa is like a greenhouse in the summer. What advice can you give? This is a very common challenge in the UAE. Having blackout curtains drawn all day and the
A/C permanently set to the lowest temperature is not an ideal solution. Firstly, take a look at what you can do outside the house. Installing an awning that can be drawn down during the peak sunshine hours will provide additional shade over the windows without permanently darkening the room. Heat-reducing window film also protects up to 80% heat and UV transference, and you can apply it yourself to reduce installation costs. Take a look at your landscaping too, as trees or plants in oversized planters in strategic positions can provide permanent shade, while also adding a pleasing outlook. What advice do you have for converting the box-like maid’s room into a study? Repurposing the maid’s room is very easily done. Take exact measurements and draw out on paper what you need the space to do – plan the desk space, drawer space and shelving. Try to maximise every possible centimetre available, from wall to wall and floor to ceiling. Then, you will be hard pressed to find a more flexible and affordable range than from good old IKEA, which offers plenty of solutions for every small and awkward space.
Dubai-based Ahla Jaw’s (ahlaajaw.com) scent diffusers are sleek and so easily blend in with the décor. My chosen scent is diffused at pre-set times during the day, so that my home always smells amazing. I change the scents every month, as there are so many to try.
FOR STATEMENT PIECES: I prefer to support local businesses where possible, and Boobury’s (booburysfurniture. com) is the place to go if you are looking for a top quality, ‘forever’ chesterfield leather sofa (see below). The owner is also a supporter of other local brands so there always new pieces to discover, such as calligraphy tables by TAMstuff (tamstuff. com), alongside vintage finds from the UK.
DREAM BUY: Hans Wegner’s iconic PP130 Circle Chair by PP Mobler (pictured left). I had the honour of meeting the grandson of Soren Holst Pedersen recently at Ikon House (ikonhouse.ae), who spoke of the history of this particular chair as well as other iconic chairs manufactured by their company.

Sejal Patel, lead designer at design firm Gensler, on functionality, playfulness and the power of design Interview: Lucy Land
B
orn into the heart of the Indian textile industry, Sejal Patel’s passion for design was ignited in childhood. She went on to study interior design at London Metropolitan University and has been working in the region for more than a decade. We speak to the designer about what drives her... How big an impact did your textile designer father have on your career? I grew up around my father’s textile business in India and, as a child, I was exposed to the colourful and vibrant art of fabrics. I began drawing and creating various forms of art with my hands and this further sparked my interest in patterns and artistic materials. With my father’s support, my artistic passions were nurtured and I was naturally led into a career in interiors. I believe my deep love for patterns and fabric is related to their strong connection with people, as they are the result of human craftsmanship and in a way, part of a universal language that binds us all together. Besides their aesthetic characteristics, fabrics also have a very important purpose in our lives: they provide shelter to the body and thus respond to our primary needs. What’s your design ethos? I believe that we can and must change the world through our everyday actions. It is in this way that I naturally embrace the founding and driving principle of Gensler, which is creating a better world through the power of design. How is the regional design scene developing? The Middle East, and particularly Dubai, boasts a very vibrant stage for both the internationally acclaimed hospitality brands, as well as new and locally established brands and concepts. More importantly, all sectors, including retail, workplaces, commercial, residential, and even healthcare, are now leaning towards the influence of hospitality design. Designers are becoming more and more involved in mixed-use projects where hospitality permeates design, and this is a growing trend.
32 | bhomes.com
What are you currently working on? Our team is currently involved in an interesting mixed-use luxury project in Saudi Arabia. The project focuses on providing a unique destination that targets women for wellness activities as well as other specialised events. Additionally, we are also working on the refurbishment and repositioning of several upscale hotels in the region. Other projects include collaborations with our architecture teams on international lifestyle residential projects, primarily targeting millennials. When you’re not working, where can we find you? Being in Dubai and in this industry, we often work to crazy deadlines. It is important to find the right work-life balance: time off is needed to relax and to spend valuable time with family and friends. I often travel to new places and experience the outdoors, taking in as much as I can from what life has to offer, as well as taking some inspiration back to apply to my work. When in Dubai, I spend time in my studio – painting, creating jewellery pieces and making digital art. What is your top home décor tip? I always suggest to my residential clients that they invest in a few valuable pieces that reveal their personality and taste. Accessories and art can be easily moved around and updated in order to give a new look to your home, but a good piece will always retain its worth in a space. What piece of furniture can you not live without? I’ve had a love of swings ever since I can remember. It brings me back to my roots – you can always find this playful piece indoors and outdoors in many homes in India. The swing is a very interesting piece, as it couples functionality with leisure and playfulness, and it is also multi-generational – anyone can enjoy it. Sejal Patel is a brand ambassador for INDEX Dubai interiors exhibition, taking place 16–18 September

Carlo Nassif, managing director of Graniti Building Materials, and his family have created their ideal home in Jumeirah Golf Estates Words: Lucy Land Photographs: Muthu Kumar
“W
e fell in love with the house when we switched on the lights,” enthuses Carlo Nassif, managing director at Graniti Building Materials. “Light changes everything – it is the most important element.” Although Carlo and his wife Deng were equally excited about their new home in Jumeirah Golf Estates, it wasn’t love at first sight for their two children, Elie, 17, and Carlene, 16. Having previously lived in The Meadows for 14 years, the children were reluctant to move away from their friends and school. For the 1,019 sqm project, Carlo employed Nemr Sidani, chief creative officer at interior design consultancy InDesign, whose professionalism and style he had admired for a long time. “Maximising natural light is crucial,” Nemr concurs. “We
even ensured daylight entered the basement.” The home is also stunningly illuminated, using spotlights, clever recessed lighting, night lighting in the bathrooms, and beautiful statement pendants. What’s more, most of the home is automated, using German brand Hager, while much of the furniture and lighting was imported from Europe. Carlo chose Jumeirah Golf Estates for its location away from the city’s hustle and bustle, its golf course and city views, and because it afforded the opportunity to buy his own plot of land and to build his own home. The project took two-and-a-half years to complete. “I have very modern taste in architecture, but we were obliged to meet a certain style criteria for the exterior,” Carlo reveals. To make up for any constraints, Carlo went bhomes.com | 39

EACH SPACE HAS TO HAVE ITS UNIQUE DEFINITION all out on the interior. The stunning entrance features impressive doubleheight ceilings. A gorgeous Irmler piano takes centre stage and, behind it, a water, wood and porcelain feature adds a beautiful design element that also successfully breaks up the space without interrupting the views through to the back of the house. “You still have the view, but you also have a bit of privacy created by a decorative feature, while the sound of water is soothing,” Nemr says. The entrance is connected to seven spaces, from the working and show kitchens through to a workstation, living, entertaining and dining areas. The vast, open-plan interior presented its challenges. “Each space has to have its unique definition, without overlapping its neighbouring space or being too busy. Simultaneously, each space has to flow onto the next and there needs to be a strong communication throughout the house,”

explains Nemr. As well as ensuring the refined materials, colours and design elements complemented each other, Nemr added a slight drop in floor level for two areas on the ground floor, which not only emphasised the separate zones but also further enhanced the views. Carlo spends most of his time in his green chair in one of the slightly lower areas, which is placed opposite a living wall and overlooks the outdoor swimming pool, with the city skyline beyond. “It’s a very serene space,” he says. “I own a large company, so work can be frenetic, but the minute I enter my home, I forget everything else. I enjoy coming home and I like my space.” The staircase provides another stunning design element, with its cladded wall connecting the basement to the top floor. The basement area, with its high-tech cinema, gym, bar, billiards table and table tennis, is Carlo’s favourite space. He describes it as a man’s cave, but there’s also a working area for his wife and it’s where the children hold their parties, with direct access from the garden. “It’s a very important space for the kids,” Carlo says. “In the previous house, they used to sit in the living room,

but now they can spend time playing with their friends in the basement.” Already familiar with Carlo’s style, Nemr created 3D renders of the interior design and provided guidelines for the furniture and lighting. The family then travelled together to choose everything. Making the most of Graniti Building Materials’ specialism, porcelain, Corian, marble and ceramic have been used beautifully throughout, from pretty wall designs to oversized slabs for floors and bathroom walls, plus woodlook tiles that flow into real wood. The house has the feel of a warm, luxury hotel. However, its functionality is also crucial. There’s a kitchen on the first floor, for example,
so that the family can enjoy Friday breakfast together, close to their bedrooms. “Each space is functional but aesthetically pleasing,” Nemr says. “We have ensured form follows function and that every family member is really happy with the space.” When Nemr asked Carlo what he’d change if he built a new house, his response was telling; “Nothing. I would just have more space, such as more parking, a bigger gym and my wife wants more dressing space.” “The family could create their dream home,” Nemr says. “And the more they use their space, the more they realise how they use it.” indesign-jlt.com

“I
was very excited to return to my roots and buy this home in an area I grew up in – it is very special to me,” enthuses Houston-based interior decorator Lucinda Loya. She is referring to an Italianate mansion in Kentucky, USA, that dates back to 1875. Later divided into numerous family apartments, Lucinda decided to return the property to its former glory and incorporate design elements from the period it was built until 1976, when she left Louisville at 12 years old. “The aim was to remain authentic to all aspects of these periods,” she explains. “Although other modern elements were considered to ensure the home also remains current.” The property was in a serious state of disrepair when Lucinda purchased it, although the original architecture and some fixtures were still intact. She repurposed and refinished what was salvageable. In contrast to working on projects for clients, Lucinda enjoyed free reign with decorating her own property. “For the first time in my career, I was allowed to decorate through pure emotion,” she says. “As any designer knows, however, decisionmaking becomes much tougher when the sky is the limit.” The long period of time provided the parameters, while a vibrant colour scheme had no boundaries, as she sought to create an energy-filled home. “I associate colour

However, with modern communications, this didn’t prove a problem. In contrast, installing a large piece of art provided a real
challenge. “At 60 inches wide, the porcelain dining room chandelier by Francesca DiMattio was very slowly and carefully moved into the home through a 62-inch door opening,” Lucinda reveals. “There was only a one-inch clearance on either side, not to mention its weight to consider.” The gallery sent art representatives from New York City to oversee the installation and it took a team of four men, one of whom heroically shimmied on his back through the home and into the dining room, holding the fragile

yet heavy piece – rocking and bouncing – in place. Four hours passed, and the chandelier was installed in the home without any damage. Sourcing period pieces that would complement the home, while it was still undergoing renovation work, also proved difficult. “When I purchased the home, and because of my appreciation of the few family heirlooms still existing, some were donated by dear family members,” she reveals. She also scoured neighbourhood vintage boutiques, antique shops, and the internet for other items, filling in the gaps where necessary with quirky modern pieces, while others were custom-made for a few key areas. A keen art collector, Lucinda’s approach is to primarily consider what she loves and what speaks to her. Purchasing art as an investment has

I FIND BEAUTY IN REMNANTS AND THINGS OF LITTLE VALUE always come second. “I am a collector of all things and I often find beauty in remnants and things of little value,” she says. “My goal is to create a beautiful atmosphere when decorating with art. However, some of our most valuable pieces also live in this home.” By being able to dip into a long time period, from 1875 to 1976, Lucinda has played with an eclectic mix of styles, including Italian, English, American ’70s hippy chic, Art Deco, mid-century modern and the horsy influence of the local town. “The disorderly mix through time allowed everything to make sense.” It’s not surprising that Lucinda’s design firm is one of the most soughtafter in Houston. The resulting home
interior is eclectic, luxurious and playful. She has artfully combined a high-end style with a sense of whimsy for a warm and cosy feel. For Lucinda, the home provides a happy retreat for her family and is full of meaning. “The location, the family heirlooms and collections, the atmosphere one experiences when entering – these are all happy reminders of my childhood,” she says. “For many years, I longed for a place that would allow me to maintain that constant connection to my childhood. Although it is not my primary residence, it gives me a beautiful sense of nostalgia that I can share with my family.”

HOME COMFORTS My top home décor tip is… Always consider lifestyle, but purchase characterful pieces that you love. Fill in with practical items where necessary, and a home will become your personal haven. My design principle is… If it’s old, allow it to be old, and if it’s new, it should look current. I am not very keen on replicas, unless they read as a very authentic piece from a particular time period. Home is… A place to feel comfortable and safe, to grow and be inspired.

WHICH NURSERY?
Bernadette King-Turner, founding partner and managing director of Beautiful Minds Nurseries, on creating a supportive environment What sets your nursery apart from others in the city?
Yellow Brick Road Nursery fully embraces the British Early Years Foundation Stage, inspired by the Reggio approach. Our philosophy is that children are capable, collaborative learners. We support the children in whatever way they express themselves, whether that’s through science, maths, words, art, music, drama or technology. We are always mindful of what children need – we listen to them with an open heart and a fresh mind. We use open-ended (a material that can be transformed), natural resources as much as possible to aid the process of learning, elaborating and building upon constructivist ideas.
Tell us about your team…
The teaching ethos is based on Holacracy® (a method of decentralised management), which empowers our qualified, professional women. We address each other as either teacher or supervising teacher; we do not consider any staff person to be an ‘assistant’ to another. Our nursery staff teams are purpose-driven for the betterment of each child entrusted in their care. For example, we never interfere with a child’s work; and we do not draw outlines

for the children to fill in. When they are ready, children create from their own minds and not that of others. Each member of staff receives more than 40 hours of professional development each year, with ongoing provision for additional learning on best practice. With an excellent staff mentoring system, each new member is welcomed, cared for and immediately feels part of our holistic team. What’s more, as the nursery curriculum is taught in three languages – English, Arabic and Mandarin, the staff also learn the languages.

Breakfast and lunch are freshly prepared each day in the nursery kitchens, and the nursery dining rooms are extra special. These are the spaces where the children learn about family etiquette, responsibility, caring, sharing, patience, appreciation and respect. The dining rooms have self-serve tables and the children take responsibility for their own nutrition. For our children of determination, it is wonderful to see the other children supporting and serving them throughout the meal times.
