y home is currently enjoying a minimalist aesthetic, with plenty of clean surfaces, due to a certain blind kitten (named Stevie) knocking everything, from diffusers to potted plants, off them. However, this being the month to crank up the romance in your interiors, a ‘less is more’ approach – along with good storage space – is recommended by Yeliz Olcay, architect at Hansgrohe, to ensure a calm, soothing environment (page 22). “Think about your perfect spa experience and focus on what you want to taste, see, touch, smell, and hear,” says Yeliz Olcay, architect and business development manager at Hansgrohe. “The visual appeal of your bathroom is the key starting point, however. Most spas are designed with a ‘less is more principle’ because a minimal environment creates more space and leads to a more peaceful and soothing ambiance. “My first suggestion is to increase the storage space and remove all the mess away from view. Design an enclosed cabinet and store everything inside, so you have clean counters to decorate minimally with candles, oil diffusers

and natural elements, such as flowers or potted plants. Also, ensure all the towels are the same colour to avoid visual chaos. “You may like to listen to some relaxing tracks, so you could set up a music system, or else you can simply go for waterproof Bluetooth speakers. If you have a larger bathroom, consider a bathtub or a Jacuzzi where you can spend more time. You can place bath pillows to make it more comfortable. “If you have a small space, you can swap the bathtub with a shower tray and upgrade your overhead shower with a powder rain and massage functions. You can also place water jets to make it more luxurious. The showering experience is the most important function of a bathroom, so allocate your budget accordingly.”

I’d like to transform my garden into an outdoor entertaining area. What do you recommend? To create a warm, cosy setting where family and friends can sit and relax, I recommend a sunken garden seating area with a central fire pit. A sound system can be embedded into the walls of the seating area to create a fully immersive experience of the music. To see and enjoy the aroma of the food being prepared, place the seating area so it overlooks the barbecue area. A barbecue grill set on a large marble counter offers a slick modern design, while a bar/breakfast counter that seats four to six people, situated parallel to it, can be used for the preparation of food and also provides a perfect gathering spot. I would like my new villa to include Arabic influences while avoiding dark, heavy wood. What do you suggest? Give traditional Arabic designs a modern interpretation by using abstract forms or nontraditional, unusual materials, such as recycled wood and rock crystal. You can also integrate traditional Arabic influences into a contemporary setting. For example, a classic courtyard plan can be integrated into a villa to create privacy, while bringing natural light and ventilation to the centre of the home. It is also an environmentally sustainable approach to design. I also recommend that you challenge the visually heavy styles of detailed Moroccan arches that are dark in colour by using light shades for walls and using materials other than stonea. A splash of abstract Islamic geometry can be included in façades, partitions and walls.
What should I consider when choosing rugs for my home? When choosing rugs, consider the aesthetics of your overall home style. Your home’s chosen colours and materials should complement each other. A rug’s role, especially if you have a plain floor, such as a white, marble floor, is to unify the space. With this in mind, if your style is classic, consider Indian or Persian rugs, with rich details. If your interiors are modern, look to minimalist, abstract or solid colours. You can also find a style that offers a middle ground between contemporary and traditional. If you’re on a budget, check out Sharjah’s Souk al-Markazi (Central Market), popularly known as the Blue Souq, or Dubai’s Al Satwa area. If you’re looking for luxurious designs, explore The Dubai Mall, Mall of the Emirates, Souk al Bahar or The Rug Company in Al Quoz.

Out Of the bOx French artist and designer Emilie Mazeau-Langlais on historic splendour, modern waste and looking to the future Interview: Lucy Land
E
milie Mazeau-Langlais blends her passion for the grand, decorative style of Louis XIV, with a childhood hobby of building playhouses out of cardboard to create her trademark designs. The self-taught artist spent time at craftsmen’s workshops before creating her first piece of art in 2006: a Regency-inspired chest of drawers made from small pieces of cardboard taped together. She perfected her technique, which led to her winning first prize at the Départemental des Métiers d’Art Fair in 2009 for her Louis XIV commode. What do you love about Louis XIV style? I love this period of history: its splendour, carelessness, sophistication and luxury. I also particularly love the intricate commodes designed by AndréCharles Boulle. During the reign of Louis XIV, the commode was moved from the bedroom to be shown off in the living room, becoming a decorative piece of furniture.
Why have you chosen to work with cardboard? It may be a cheap material that is usually confined to utilitarian uses, but it can be found in large quantities as a waste product so it is easily accessible. My role as an artist is to turn it into a luxury material. Do you have a daily ritual? I am naturally anxious, so everything can quickly turn into a source of impediment to my work. I have a morning ritual, which includes yoga, to break away from everyday life and worries, and help me to focus. Once I am at work, I’m really happy and I find it difficult to stop working. While I work, I listen to French radio stations to stay connected with world events.

Tell us about some of the challenges you’ve faced in your career… Using cardboard, not usually associated with high-end art, has presented a huge challenge. You can’t wet cardboard: its use as a raw material is limited. I’ve also needed to assert myself as an independent professional and combat the stereotype of my work being considered an occupational hobby. Moreover, I’ve persevered for more than 10 years, working with utter precision without yet knowing where this adventure will lead me. What piece are you most proud of? The next one! I am proud of all my works, of course, but I am always looking forward to the next creation. What is your advice for incorporating one of your works into a home setting? My pieces can work within any space, including opulent, refined, eclectic and neutral interiors. What are your thoughts on working with another material? I live in Limoges-France, the capital of porcelain, and I would be interested in meeting with a porcelain manufacturer who is willing to combine materials. What is your top home décor tip? I don’t have any tips, as such, as I appreciate personal interiors. You’re participating in INDEX – what are you most looking forward to? I’m looking forward to reaching a new international audience and I hope my work is recognised for its artistic and technical qualities. odern in their outlook yet traditional at heart,” is how interior designer Leema Ajith describes her clients, a husband and wife from south India who moved to Dubai in 2002. Their first home in the emirate was an apartment in Jumeirah Lake Towers, which was styled by Leema, but the couple soon needed more space for their growing family. With its community facilities, proximity to Dubai’s arterial roads and spacious homes, new development, Villa Lantana, located in south Barsha, became the couple’s top choice in which to buy. They asked Leema to work with them again to transform their property into their dream home, which they moved into five months ago. The family’s new villa includes a foyer, living and dining area, kitchen and a bedroom on the ground floor, while the first floor comprises of master bedroom, a bedroom for each child and a family room, which has been transformed into a room for the husband to retreat to. “The wife wanted a grand entrance, a warm and earthy aesthetic and to use the property’s nooks for her Indian curios. She craved an easy to maintain,

contemporary design combined with tradition, and for her home to be Vastu Shastra compliant,” Leema says. Meaning ‘science of architecture’ in Hindu, Vastu Shastra incorporates Hindu and often Buddhist beliefs. Its designs attempt to integrate architecture with nature, using geometric patterns, symmetry and directional alignments. The husband, meanwhile, wanted a cosy space in which to unwind after a stressful day at work. “My mantra for the ground floor was to strike a balance between modern and ethnic styles,” Leema reveals. “The main door opens onto the foyer, with a collection of brass lamps that the couple has collected over the years. I combined a clean, off-white wall with floor-toceiling rich walnut cabinets and a warm stone-clad wall to create a space that is both regal and welcoming.” A gypsum wall, with a door, was built along the stairway to create a sense of enclosure to the living area. Combining a mix of tactile materials and a palette of green, brown and taupe, the linear living space is divided into two smaller seating areas, with the large window emphasising a connection with the

outside. The side of the gypsum wall facing the living area was clad in a full-sized mirror. The natural light from the windows is reflected in the mirrored wall, creating a beautifully bright space that seems bigger than it really is. Furnished with striking Indian and customised pieces, the living space includes a long, polished maple and rich walnut wall, which supports the TV; solid seating lacquered with wax; brass lamps; antiques; and a curio corner shelf, showcasing mementos that the family have picked up on their travels. There is also a handcrafted statue of a meditating Buddha seated on a wooden stool located close to the mirrored wall to welcome guests into the living space. On one side of the living space is a dining area, in which the elegant dining table, from Al Huzaifa Furniture, seats eight people. Leaning against the muted wall is a stunning eight-foot solid wooden door boasting intricate carvings and brass inlays, while plants add freshness to the décor. Upstairs, an off-white wall provides the backdrop for a vibrant six-foot by four-foot mural, which was custommade in Kerala for the couple. As the landing area offers the connecting space to the three distinct bedrooms, the den and the art-furnished wall, it was crucial to make the opposing wall and the space interesting. This was achieved

with a rich, textured metallic green paint (called Alba from Mas Paints) and an oversized chandelier. The master bedroom features a fourposter bed, from Marina Home, with white georgette draping, complemented by an earthy bedspread and a coloured throw. A lounge chair and reading lamp from Pottery Barn completes the elegant and classic look. Pretty but fun, the daughter’s bedroom features a graffiti wallpaper from Mr Perswall and a grey tufted headboard. On the opposite wall, the study area flows gently into the dressing area. With the son currently in boarding school, and visiting Dubai every three months, his room also has a study and sleeping zone, but has a minimal yet warm look, while a beautiful city wallpaper complements the summer blue colour of the room. The husband’s industrial-style room features an exposed brick effect wallpaper by Mr Perswall; a chesterfield sofa; a custom-built bar, which continues as a TV unit and book shelving; dark flooring; and rich walnutfinished cabinets. The space is further personalised with Mapiful, a customised map poster of the couple’s favourite countries that they have visited. “The room may have been created for the husband, but it has become the entire family’s favourite room,” Leema reveals.

Interior designer Rococo Davis has filled her London terraced house with carefully sourced gems Words: Lucy Land

I
t took four years for interior designer Rococo Davis to transform her Victorian terraced house in south-west London into her dream family home. To create a homely space filled with timeless pieces, her initial mood board was full of colour, patterns, textured fabrics, brass, lamps, wallpapers and illustrations. However, when she moved into the property with her husband, Gav, and cocker spaniel, Edie, she didn’t have a big budget to turn her mood board onto a reality. Consequently, she searched far and wide, trawling sample sales, online marketplace eBay, charity shops, auctions and markets during her travels for fabrics, rugs and light fixtures. It’s not surprising that her mantra is, ‘There’s no such thing as “can’t”’. Her process required a huge amount of patience, while juggling other projects and commitments. She also personally painted a lot of the house. “To save costs, much of the paintwork became a weekend hobby,” she says. “I found it very therapeutic.” When the time arrived to complete the project, she was heavily pregnant with her daughter Mimi. “Heading to antique fairs was exhausting,” she admits. “But the treasures I found made the experience even more satisfying.” The tight budget meant the lighting presented a challenge. “It’s quite tricky when you’re doing a gradual project, especially when it’s your own, as you have to really plan where you want electrics at the beginning and it’s much easier when you can do as much of it as possible at the same time, she reveals. “That said, the electricians I work with are fantastic – they always have great ideas about how we can do something, helping to minimise the amount of destruction.” Ironically, the sofa presented the greatest challenge. “It’s a huge, classic old English Duresta Hornblower sofa. All of the front windows had to be taken out to get it into the house. Some might think that is a lot of work, but it’s absolutely worth it. A comfortable sofa to sit on at the end of the day is a must.” The first thing the couple did when they moved in was open up the hallway and living space. “You can’t afford to make structural mistakes and my brothers’ building and decorating business, Lethbridge London, did an excellent job.” The bathroom, however, became the starting point. “We completely gutted the room, installing underfloor heating and a Victorian tile design.” During renovations, Rococo discovered a fireplace hidden behind

There are many layers of fabrics and treasures that have accumulated over time the wall, which coincided with finding a fire surround for sale in a scrap metal shop. “I painted it that very day and by the end of the week we had a beautiful bathroom with a decorative fireplace.” The bathroom also included an original roll-top bath that she had bought for a steal from a reclamation yard in Norfolk. The living room, meanwhile, has been a work-in-progress from the start. Floors were leveled and stained, lighting was installed, the fireplace was transformed into a working one, radiators and glass cabinets were added, joinery was used to hide wiring and create storage space, and walls were painted with Farrow and Ball’s rich
Calke Green. Zones were created in the open space, with one space providing the lounge and another offering a more intimate bar area. “There are many layers of fabrics and treasures, which have accumulated in this space over time, giving it real character.” These include two Vaughan lights, snapped up from an online marketplace, which frame the fireplace. Rococo’s favourite room, it offers a place for entertaining, sitting by the fireplace for drinks with friends, reading the Sunday papers or watching a box set. With its large Victorian desk, gallery of racing prints, herringbone patterned Roman blinds, soothing green

painted walls and colourful Indian silk light shade, the office provides a warm, traditional space. “Design is about bringing a room to life – creating welcoming environments”. In the kitchen, two seating areas were created with a bespoke island made of Italian Carrara marble for casual seating, as well as a large 10ft antique English oak farmhouse table, which has the option to extend for extra guests. “We love to entertain, so we wanted to provide a light, homely space where it is possible to seat eight guests comfortably for dinner,” Rococo explains. “We also wanted alternative seating to sit casually in the week and read the papers during the weekend.” A mix of timeless Wegnerstyle Wishbone chairs and a comfortable upholstered dining bench provided a sophisticated twist on seating, with Lewis and Wood’s Oxus fabric adding the final component to the banquette. The blue paintwork (Blue Blood by Paint & Paper Library) was used on one wall, the skirting boards and the interior of the kitchen cupboards, which look particularly good when lit. “I also continued the blue into the hallway as it needed something else. It’s the beauty of painting – you can add more as you go along, if you feel brave enough.” Surrounded by the things she has collected over the years, Rococo has created an inspiring, as well as homely, place to spend time with her family, entertain, rest, play and work. Indeed, she regularly hosts meetings and networking lunches for designers at her home. “It’s such a wonderful thing to do,” she enthuses. “I meet lots of incredibly creative people, which you may not do otherwise. Some have even become close friends. In the busy world we live in, it’s fantastic to take a few hours out and meet other fascinating people and even put a face to your favourite Instagram account.” rococolondoninteriors.com
