WeLcome In this issue, we take a tour of two very different homes: an expat family’s Al Reef villa (page 16) and, further afield, a large residence in India, designed for three generations of a family (page 20). Despite the differences in culture and climate, both spaces have been designed to maximise flow and openness for its inhabitants.

My design philosophy has always taken a less-is-more approach, to keep things as simple as possible and to get the most out of it. At Draw link we aim to create unique and innovative concepts that influence the design world regionally and globally, rather than focusing on the volume of our projects. Most of our designs are contemporary and minimalist, yet sleek and sophisticated.

Ask the

E XP E R T Aycil Aktug, director of Sandalyeci, shares her advice on choosing the right chairs

What should we consider w hen choosing dining chairs?

Whether it’s breakfast, lunch or supper, everybody has a favourite meal. It’s when we can enjoy relaxing and sharing time with those we love, which is why choosing the right dining chairs is important. Their style, colour and material have to add value to the space. What’s more, we’re more likely to mix and match dining sets than pair a matching table and chairs these days, which is more interesting though also more challenging to put together. Your chairs will have to work with the table, the room and also the needs of your guests. I would advise picking chairs that share a design element with the table. For example, if the table is square or rectangular, consider chairs with a rectangular or square seat; our café-

style Alla and Benek chairs, featuring curves, meanwhile, work well with rustic, round farm-style tables. You may want to stick to wood if you’re worried about someone spilling something on them. Cushioned chairs, however, add comfort. Our Alga range offers a good choice because they’re still light enough to move without a firm hold.

How should we go about choosing a statement chair for the living room?

A chair with a stylish design adds value to a room by being a centrepiece that accents the rest of the décor. The aim of the statement chair is to draw attention to itself without overdoing it. The more unusual it is, the more of a statement it will make, though regular chairs can also make a statement.

Going with the flow

Words : Lucy Land photographs : muthu Kumar

Andy and R an Abey have renovated their Al R eef family villa to maximise, open up and personalise its space

Left: The abey family spend more time in their kitchen than the dining room (above)

“Y

ou know when you move into a house and there are things you would like differently? we just drew on the walls with some chalk – the TV here, microwave there and so on,” says Ran Abey, a commercial pilot for Eithad Airways. His wife Andy, who works as a communications consultant, adds, “we had a lot of people quote us on the renovation but in the end we went for one single contractor that could deliver the whole renovation, which meant we could also lay all the wiring properly for electricals. It took 12 weeks to get it just how we really wanted it.” The couple moved into their Al Reef home with their four children a year ago. Then, it was a typical five-bedroom villa with a guest bathroom close to the main entrance. They got rid of that bathroom and created one where the maid’s room was previously located in order to open up the kitchen. Consequently, there’s a lovely sense of flow throughout the rooms,

which continues into the garden. “we extended and put in sliding doors to allow for more light from the garden,” Andy explains. “And we raised the backyard so it was the same level as the interior.” The couple cleverly hid the outdoor pool pump by elevating the outside dining area further. The impressive BBQ includes a Greek rotisserie – a nod to Andy’s heritage – which was built by Ran, while a step down to the swimming pool reveals the original level of the garden. “we spend most of our time on this open-plan floor, between the lounge, outdoors and the kitchen. Despite the dining table, we eat in the kitchen most nights because it’s easier with the kids. Ran really enjoys cooking Sri lankan food and I love to cook Greek food,” Andy says. Indeed, there is a chicken roasting in the double Bertazzoni-Italia oven as Andy gives us a tour of her home. The first floor originally comprised four bedrooms, but the couple converted two of them into a master

suite. Andy has maximised the space by adding a yoga mat and mirror to the walk-in wardrobe. She also converted a balcony into a kids’ playroom. “By May, it’s too hot to sit outside so it made sense to convert the balconies,” she says. The top floor had perhaps the biggest transformation. The whole area has been combined to form the study: a desk for Andy, one for Ran and an arts and crafts section for the kids. “There is always an art project on the go and the space also enables us to centralise our technology.” The décor, with its neutral base, mix of textures and pop of colour, also adds to the sense of flow throughout the family’s home. “we always choose a neutral base because we change our cushion covers around every 18 months,” Andy reveals. “when Ran and I met, his décor style was catalogue white, but I’ve managed to convince him otherwise because I really like mixing up different textures and fabrics,” she says. “I’ve always loved purple – it’s calming and offers great depth to a room.” Since having children, Ran has converted to Andy’s design ethos. The proof is in the drinks cabinet, created by Ran from recycled tables bought cheaply from classifieds website Dubizzle and sanded down. “Every time we move, the cabinet shifts and moulds into a different shape – it’s like a puzzle. for this house we had to extend it up and out to fit the fridge in, so it keeps being modified,” Andy says, before revealing that the villa is currently for sale with Better Homes. “I like the challenge of taking a space and working out how to get the most out of it.” She’s clearly ready for the next challenge. “we like low-maintenance things with a bit of character and versatility,” says Ran. “for example, we previously had dining tables that easily became scratched, but this dining table, with its uneven surface, has been ‘lived in’ for the last four or five years and we’ll take it wherever we go.” Some of the furniture was bought from Ikea, but Andy tweaked it by swapping the original handles to mix-and-match ones from Anthropologie and Zara Home in order to personalise her home. “with a little bit of creativity, Ikea offers some great solutions and its furniture can take a beating,” says Ran, practically. The Ikea pieces are mixed with furniture from THE one and furnishings picked from souks and on their travels, while much of the artwork is created by the family. “we didn’t get any matching sets; everything was hand-picked,” Andy enthuses. “we spent a lot of time picking pieces that complement each other.” wherever Ran travels for work, he picks up a fridge magnet, which is added to their son Elliot’s collection, and a snowglobe for olivia’s collection. “I like things that have a bit of a story,” Ran explains. “In every room, there is an ornament or a piece of furniture that was bought either when we were on a trip together or when I was flying somewhere.” He points to a vibrant artwork in the lounge. “I bought this artwork when I was on a layover. I was walking through a hotel lobby when I saw this picture and it reminded me that if my parents had made a left instead of a right at some point in their lives, I would have never had the opportunity to travel. It keeps me humble,” he says. “we picked up all the pieces in this house and thought, you know what, that works for us – we’ll take that.”

An interconnected World

This New Delhi home and studio meets the challenges of lifestyle and environment, thanks to Sonali and Manit R astogi of architecture firm Morphogenesis

I

t’s not surprising that architects Sonali and Manit rastogi of Morphogenesis won the SIAGetz Architecture Award for their contribution to emerging architecture in Asia in 2014. Their work is strongly rooted in the cultural, social, economic and climactic conditions of India. “Unlike the individualistic cultures of Western Europe and north America, Indian society has traditionally been collectivistic – one that promotes social cohesion and interdependence, with the family forming the focal point of this social structure,” says Sonali. “relationships with others are very important, while personal autonomy, space and privacy are considered secondary,” adds Manit. “Add to this the concept of ‘Atithi devo Bhava’, meaning ‘the guest is equivalent to God’, taken from ancient Hindu scriptures, and you find that one’s doors are always open to family and friends. despite the rapidly changing socio-cultural milieu, family remains a strong institution here.” one of their latest projects, a 16,000 sq. ft. Indian residence located on a third of an acre in new delhi, which includes an architectural studio, was designed for three generations of a family along with a busy workplace. Including friends, family and staff from the studio, there are more than 125 people in the building on any given day. “The biggest challenge and the biggest success of the home is that it plays host to a lot of people at the same time yet there is no transgression of privacy despite this very open attitude,” says Sonali. They achieved this balance with a central courtyard – a traditional Indian home space where the extended family gathers for meals, events and celebrations – that forms an open, collective hub from which private areas radiate. Separation of spaces is enabled by differences in levels rather than through walls and doors. For example, the entire studio is located in the basement with the support team sitting on the second floor. “The studio never feels that it is within somebody’s home despite being one wall away,” Manit explains. What’s more, having the workplace within the home improves production because it allows women to work from home while simultaneously bringing up their children. The home successfully overlaps spatial categories into three levels: the private domain of the nuclear family (the bedrooms and breakfast room); the shared intergenerational spaces such as the family room, kitchen and dining areas; and the fluid public domain of the lobby and living spaces. Sonali and Manit also factored in environmental design. “Considering delhi is a city where air quality has been an issue for some years now, a sustainable

design was imperative,” Manit says. The architects imagined the house as a porous object whereby air movement and visual connectivity permeated the building. They incorporated high-thermal-mass materials in the west, earth damping for the basement studios, landscape buffers in the south, high-performance surfaces in the east and a large cavity on the barrel roof as well as the lap pool to help with heat absorption on the top terraces. In addition, the courtyard, located on the first floor, was reimagined as a lush private interior garden. Filled with plants that improve indoor air quality, such as palms, money plants and mother in-law’s tongue, this space functions as an oxygen lung for the inhabitants. “There is an entire ecosystem living and growing in the heart of the house,” Sonali enthuses. There’s even a tree growing up from the first-floor courtyard to the second floor, which acts as a screen to separate the upper floor into two visually distinct areas. The second floor, with its beautiful vaulted roof, was designed as an open space where the family could pursue their hobbies. It is partly a music room, partly an art studio, and a large Jean Nouvel-designed table is used as a library and study. Art has also been incorporated into the design of the home, with the main living room showcasing a work by Indian artist D Saravana. “The entire family really loved the piece and after a lot of brainstorming on how to display the sculpture, I designed a large grey table around the work, in tone with its monochrome style, allowing for this conversation piece to hold centre stage in the room,” Manit reveals. The home also features sculptures by Shanti Swaroopini. “This relaxed home perfectly suits its family,” Sonali says. “We managed to negotiate the issues of air and sound pollution, while retaining an openness in both spirit and design.”

al raha beach “ This self - sufficient neighbourhood offers a real sense of community,” says Maria Joao, R esidential Consultant at Better Homes Al Raha Beach is one of the best areas to live in Abu Dhabi, arguably offering the finest facilities in the area. Ideally situated, this self-contained waterfront community is just across the water from Yas Island with its theme parks and mega-mall; a 10-minute drive from Abu Dhabi International Airport; and right by the main road access to both Abu Dhabi and Dubai. It’s also home to Aldar headquarters. Voted Best Futuristic Design 2008 by the Building Exchange Conference, it’s the first circular building of its kind in the Middle East. There are three different communities: Al Bandar, Al Muneera and Al Zeina. Al Bandar boasts a marina and is the most exclusive precinct. It also offers the most in terms of nightlife and may be more

appealing to singles and couples. Al Muneera and Al Zeina have more to offer families. They’re both quite similar with each offering a private beach, restaurants and a supermarket. The main difference between the two is the apartment sizes – if you’re looking for more space, opt for Al Zeina. The area offers a good mix of properties. Al Bandar, set among landscaped lawns, water fountains, tennis courts, swimming pools and its marina, offers modern glass-fronted apartments and duplexes, loft residences and larger family apartments. Prices start at Dhs135,000 to rent and Dhs1.5 million to buy a one-bedroom apartment while two bedrooms start at Dhs180,000 to rent and Dhs1.9 million to buy. Al Muneera comprises a mix of mid-rise apartment blocks, surrounded by

Al Zeina offers one- to four-bedroom townhouses and beach villas boasting landscaped garden courtyards and swimming pools or plunge pools. Two bedrooms in Al Zeina start from Dhs140,000 to rent and Dhs1.75 million to buy. There are plenty of schools in Khalifa City A, which is a 15-minute drive from Al Raha Beach. These include GEMS American Academy, founded on an American/International Baccalaureate; Raha International School, which is an International Baccalaureate World School; and Al Yasmina School, which offers a British curriculum.
