I believe in keeping it simple. Ironically, simplicity is the hardest look to successfully achieve, but I apply it to every aspect of home, work, clothing and design. My personal philosophy causes an interesting juxtaposition at home – my wife has a preference for an eclectic mixture of styles and a lived-in look, which is at odds with my minimalist approach.

Top tip for choosing art for your home
Buy what you like and don’t buy to invest. Don’t overanalyse an art piece: if it works for you then that should be enough. And buy a good frame – it can make a huge difference to the overall impact of an artwork.
Arranging art in the home
Give an artwork space. Too often, I see walls that are so full of artwork, photographs and other wall hangings that it’s impossible to see each individual piece of art. Maintain separation and leave plenty of white space around an artwork.
Paint because I associate wallpaper with a sense of covering up imperfections. This may well stem from my early home owning days, when coarse wood-chip paper was de rigueur – we used it to cover up flaking plasterboard and the odd patch of damp wall. However, I love the look of old and worn wallpaper and recently photographed some at the ancient Lacock Abbey (the place where photography first started) in Wiltshire.

light reason Juncal Marcellan has taken a practical approach to styling her bright and breezy villa. The result is an eclectic family home Words: Lucy Land Photographs: Muthu Kumar
“T
hese villas were originally rented out for parties,” says Juncal Marcellan, referring to her villa at Fairmont Bab Al Bahr. She guides us around her large kitchen, “There were few plug sockets, there was a chandelier here, a pillar there, and the dark wood cupboards are shallow – rather like a serviced hotel apartment.” Rumour has it that dancing poles were even installed in the villas. “I think a pole was once here,” she says, pointing to a piece of chain, dangling from the ceiling of an upstairs mezzanine room (which has since been transformed into a kids’ play and study area). Fortunately, the maintenance team has been excellent, adding lights and sockets to make the house more practical. Living with her husband, four children, two dogs, a nanny and a driver, Juncal needed to make further changes. The area originally designed for a gym has become a place for the children to get ready in the mornings. “I couldn’t waste time running up and down the stairs, so I use this space to store the kids’ sports clothes and other necessities.” She opens the door to the intended sauna, revealing a pile of clothes. Indeed, Juncal’s pragmatic approach is evident from the moment you enter her home. There are two entrances: a smart one for guests; and one with plenty of storage space for the family’s daily routine. Play zones for her youngest daughter, fouryear-old Valentina, have been created close to adult areas, while an office space has been designed in an alcove in the informal lounge, so she can work next to the children. “We debated whether or not to have a TV so close to the formal dining area, but I needed a place for my husband and me to relax,” she says. It was the right move. The evening is her favourite time of the day. Once the children have gone to bed, she enjoys sitting on the sofa with bhomes.com | 19
I tend to upcycle and move pieces around so I can cherish the memory of them her husband, often watching TV. “I usually only spend an hour in this space because I fall asleep,” she smiles. While the amount of light that Juncal’s villa receives has allowed her to be adventurous in her colour scheme, she has also needed to furnish her home with plenty of curtains to absorb the heat of the harsh summers. The long corridors also presented a challenge. “I couldn’t just leave them empty – otherwise they’d look like hotel corridors.” To resolve the issue, she furnished them with interesting consoles, including one that was previously found in the street before being restored, as well as decorating the walls with beautiful artworks. Originally from Spain, Juncal has been an expat for 14 years – four in Hong Kong and 10 in Abu Dhabi – and her home reflects her family’s journey and heritage (her husband, Rodney Cannon, is Australian). There are artworks, furniture and curiosities picked up from her time in Hong Kong,

a painting by an Australian-Chinese artist, a locally bought cabinet that has been restored and another originally from Tibet that was gifted by her parents. Other objects were picked up during holidays, such as two Buddha statues from a trip to Thailand, or from trips back home to Spain, such as the flamingo print cushions. “Each piece tells a story, so I tend to upcycle and move pieces around so I can cherish the memory of them,” she reveals. Her blue sofas, for example, were originally bought in Hong Kong 14 years ago and have since been reupholstered. Juncal’s penchant for Chinese artistry, in particular, has clearly impacted her guests. “I was working out with a good friend one day while my parents were visiting,” she says. “When my friend returned from the bathroom, she exclaimed, ‘Juncal, I just met your father in the hallway – he’s not Chinese!” She actually thought I was half-Chinese because of the artworks in my home.”

KeepiNG Family Designed for three generations, this gorgeous apartment in India offers something for everyone Words: Lucy Land
“I
t was of utmost importance that we designed the apartment keeping the visual milieu in mind, and to ensure that our design did not in any way become an obstacle to enjoying the natural vistas that the location afforded,� says Faisal Vohra, partner and principle designer at interior design studio F + S Designs. He is referring to a stunning 2,700 sq. ft. apartment located on the 17th floor of a high-rise building, situated on a small hillock in Powai, a smart residential suburb of Mumbai, India. The four-bedroom property is surrounded by lush greenery, while its layout includes balconies for all rooms and either side of the living room, providing breathtaking, unobstructed views of the lake and vegetation on one side of the apartment and the Arabian Sea on the other. The home belongs to six family members: a young couple, who are second generation industrialists, with two sons aged eight and 11, plus their parents on the father’s side. Designing a home that catered to the aesthetic approaches of three different generations provided a challenge. In particular, the lobby and common living areas needed to be designed in a luxurious, understated manner so that the senior members of the family were comfortable entertaining guests of their age bracket, yet the areas also needed to offer minimalism and modernity that would suit the tastes of a young couple and would be relevant for a few decades to come. In response, a primary colour palette that anchored all the colours was chosen, while the common corridor running between all the rooms was kept a neutral white without embellishments in order for the visual reference of each room to come through. In the living room, the colour palette was understated, with beautiful deep greyish blue and white wall treatments to give the area an open and uncluttered feel, and help it flow seamlessly with the exterior. The other rooms were given a more individual approach to suit each family member. Another important consideration was the heavy draft of wind that continuously strikes the large floor-to-ceiling French windows on either side of the apartment. Therefore, the interiors needed to be robust and practical to ensure minimal maintenance. Consequently, the team chose natural bhomes.com | 23
The contemporary setting is my favourite space in the home
veneers, solid wood and metals that bring in a palette of different textures and complementary colours. The entrance door opens into a wonderfully inviting foyer that sets the mood for the home. On the left is a custom-designed prayer room door made from rose-gold polished aluminium strips hand-woven on top of a Prussian blue veneer. The wall on the right has intermittent strips of metal and polished teak wood, while the beautiful console table is also custom-designed for this space and is made of angular metal strips with an Armani marble top. The dark teak wood molding on the wall blends beautifully with the contemporary striped design of the opposing wall. There is also dark teak wood molding (on the plush grey back wall) in the living room, while wood panelled open doorways create a sense of continuity. A handmade solid wooden bench from Bali adds a warm ethnic touch among the contemporary Italian furniture. The main living room wall is designed using a beautiful array of recessed lighting in an undulated grid motif. A sleek contemporary shelf design with integrated floating lights has been installed in a tiered design to provide a roomy feel and unobstructed views of the rare artefacts that belong to the family. “The rule of thumb for lighting is less is more,” reveals Faisal. “We used direct lights for areas where illumination was required and indirect lighting from ceiling coves and the wall to switch over to a calmer ambience. The result is a theatrical setting and soft luxe levels for a relaxed evening.” What’s more, the temperature for the lights is controlled at 3,500 kelvin which mimics daylight, and, consequently, provides a calmer setting. The dining area, which looks into the open kitchen with its informal breakfast table for two, features a striking dining table that includes a tabletop cut from a single piece of wood trunk and treated with a glossy finish. The family room also has a sense of openness, with large white, back-lit open shelves and a TV unit against a light grey veneered wall, while the contrasting polished black centre

table and side table with sleek metal legs add character to the space. The room transforms for overnight guests, with the beautiful Italian tan-leather upholstered sofa converting into a comfortable queen-sized bed and the wardrobe serves as a spare storage unit for the family. The large complementing artwork on the back wall and other fabric furnishings tie the space together. A charming bedroom space with unique hand-etched sandstone tiles, meticulously placed to transform the wall into a contemporary artwork, serves as a backdrop to the bed in the grandparents’ room. The furniture, including the wardrobe, is by German company Nolte and has been designed with concealed linear lighting. “The contemporary setting is my favourite space in the home,” says Faisal’s business partner and principle architect Shamila
Meeran. The textural sandstone wall, side drawers and the wardrobe, the floor-to-ceiling mirror on the wardrobe, matte-finished wood on the sidetable top and storage shelves, polished white Duco paint on the study table drawers, leather upholstery and fabric furnishings add layers to the space. The sleek black suspended light on top of either side table help to frame the room. “I love its elegant colour palette and furniture,” says Faisal, referring to the parents’ room, which overlooks Powai Lake at a distance. It has a plush, kingsized leather upholstered bed, with a minimalist, white pin-striped cement backdrop offering an antithesis to the refined Italian bed. The wood shelves, TV unit and wooden floor add a sense of warmth to the space. The wardrobe blends into the space seamlessly with its taupe polished lacquer finish; and the
strip of bronze-tinted mirror running along its entire length adds the illusion of extra space. A large, leather-framed mirror and leather-upholstered pouffe at the dressing table area adds further depth. A beige leather upholstered lounger with footstool and a custommade ceiling suspended reading light completes the look. The elegant furniture for this, and the children’s, bedroom is by Italian brand SPAR. The team has succeeded in creating a beautiful home that is adored by each individual family member. What’s more, its location, and its gorgeous views are celebrated. As Faisal says, “We absolutely love the views from the balcony and have cherished the time sitting there over a cup of tea with the family after the project was complete, while gazing towards the lake and the horizon while the sun sets”. bhomes.com | 25

It’s also home to the iconic Aldar headquarters building, the first circular building of its kind in the Middle East. Built along 5.2 million metres of natural beachfront, this community offers a laidback, resort-like lifestyle, with every convenience available. It’s the perfect choice for those who want a relaxed setting, with fine facilities, yet still want to be centrally located. There are three different communities: Al Bandar, Al Muneera and Al Zeina. Al Bandar boasts a marina and is the most exclusive precinct. It also offers the most in terms of nightlife and, as

(Tawa Bakery is a great spot for a lazy breakfast with a view in Al Muneera, while Café Firenze is the place for a coffee in Al Zeina.) The main difference between the two areas is the apartment sizes – if you’re looking for more space, choose Al Zeina. With bus routes and taxis available everywhere on the island, it is easily accessible and caters well to families. Yellow Submarine Nursery is located within Al Raha Beach, while there are plenty of nurseries and schools in Khalifa City A, which is a 15-minute drive from Al Raha Beach. These include Reggio Emilia-inspired Learning Spaces Nursery; GEMS American Academy, which offers an American/International Baccalaureate programme; Raha International School, an International Baccalaureate World School; and Al Yasmina School, with its British curriculum. As well as offering a self-sufficient community, the neighbourhood boasts a beautiful environment. “I love the sea view from my balcony, especially during sunset,” says Jozefa Melo, who lives with her husband in a one-bedroom apartment in Al Bandar. The couple has a boat moored in the marina and regularly enjoy an evening cruise. “I love the lifestyle that I get to enjoy. You can often find my husband and me in our favourite local restaurant NoLu’s, which offers Californian-style food with an Afghan twist.”
