o mark the holy month of Ramadan, we’ve compiled an edit of elegant Arabian forms (page 12) – think intricate patterns, rich hues and sumptuous textures to create a warm and welcoming space. We have all tastes in pattern covered, however, with our pick of painterly flourishes (page 8), while interior designer and Abu Dhabi showroom manager of Interiors Furniture Suhair Mawlood reveals her love of abstract and bohemian styles (page 11). In London, meanwhile, nature provides the decorative inspiration for a King’s Cross apartment (page 22), from the prints on the cushions to a gold ant motif on the kitchen wall. Closer to home, in Mangrove One (page 18), an Australian couple reveal why they love their adopted city so much: it’s where they have friends and where their children are enjoying an international experience. And finally, if you’re looking for a home in a beachside community and what is, arguably, the most desirable address in Abu Dhabi right now, check out our guide to Saadiyat Island (page 27).

COLOUR COMBO TO TRY
Start with one of your favourite colours and build around it. My favourite combinations are beige with aqua, and charcoal with mustard or gold.
MOST PRIZED POSSESSION
A refined piece of art of an abstract woman made of ceramic with crackled glazing of matte charcoal and white by Iraqi sculptor Etihad Kareem – it adds amazing character to my home.
HOMELY ESSENTIALS
A Spanish rocking chair with a bohemian fabric from Interiors Furniture – it’s perfect for helping me unwind after a stressful day.
TOP LIGHTING TIP
WALLPAPER OR PAINT?
It’s too hard to pick one. I think a mixture of both is key – I like to have wallpaper on an accent wall to add texture and break up the space.
Getting the lighting right is very important. If the lighting isn’t in correct proportion to the room, then it won’t complement the space well. bhomes.com | 11

Betterhomes Magazine | HOME
“I
work in a very fast-paced environment, so when I come home I need a serene, relaxed environment and I like to be reminded of the Gold Coast, where I’m from,” says Katrina Anderson. Indeed, the villa, located close to Khalifa Park, that she shares with her husband, Shane, and their two children, Christian and Olivia, is a sanctuary of calming blues and fresh neutrals. It also boasts high ceilings and a large open-plan living, dining and kitchen area that leads onto the garden. A small inner courtyard, with a water feature that was installed by the villa’s previous owners, provides an oasis. “A crane was used to bring it in over the roof,” explains Shane. “So the previous family wasn’t prepared to go to the effort of taking it back out, but we love it.” “The sound of the water fountain is very relaxing,” enthuses Katrina. “We can close the doors to the rest of the world and totally unwind from the day.” The Australian couple has lived in Abu Dhabi for a decade – bar a brief departure. “A couple of years ago, I started getting a bit of expat guilt, thinking we should go home to be closer to the extended family,” Katrina reveals. However, when the couple returned to the Gold Coast, they didn’t spend as much time with family

as they had expected, due to everyone’s busy schedules. “We quickly realised that wasn’t the right reason to return,” Shane says. “We really had the ideal lifestyle, too – a beautiful house that backed onto a big lake, located three minutes’ drive to one of the best beaches in the country. Everything was perfect but we had different expectations.” Just over a year later, they were back. “I quickly discovered how much this part of the world means to me: I have friends here and my kids grew up here,” adds Katrina. “Coming back to Abu Dhabi was really important and now I don’t feel guilty any more.” Their European-style villa is very different from their previous threefloor Abu Dhabi home, with its bright and spacious ground floor, which is the couple’s favourite part of their home. When they moved in last year, the couple needed to buy every piece of furniture. “Until then, I didn’t realise how much we needed to set up a home.” The couple called on interior designer Katherine Wightman, whose team custom-made furniture to fit the space, including sectional sofas, the outdoor seating (designed to hide power sockets) and the cabinetry. The team also made bespoke cushions. “I’m big into textures and layering because a home needs to feel welcoming.” Other pieces were bought
20 | bhomes.com
from a mixture of stores, including Pottery Barn, West Elm, IKEA, Pan Emirates and even Carrefour (for the oversized rugs). The couple wanted to ensure their children had everything they needed in their home. To that end, the upstairs landing area offers a relaxed seating, TV and play area, with a LEGO table, especially for the kids, who also provided the starting point for the design direction of their bedrooms. “Olivia really wanted a purple room, so we guided her towards lilacs and metallics to soften the look and provide a mature space as she grows,” Katrina reveals. The bedroom includes a pretty birch tree-print wallpaper, elegant furniture from Pottery Barn and plenty of texture. Her brother’s cosy blue-andwhite bedroom, meanwhile, has a star and superhero motif. Providing the children with an international environment was also a big driver for the family’s return to the UAE. “My daughter recently said, ‘Mum, I love being here because every day is a special day’ – I had to ask her to elaborate.” Olivia was referring to the many different international holidays that are celebrated at her school. “I want my children to grow up with an inclusive, tolerant mindset, and I’ve developed a different viewpoint since I’ve returned: we love being here and we’re here to stay.”
HOME COMFORTS Start with… A feature piece that you really love. You can mix it with a variety of expensive and affordable things. My top home tip is… Always keep an empty drawer. There’s a saying: if you keep an empty space, good things come to you to fill those drawers. Home is… Where my kids and husband are.

THE GOLD ANTS ARE SUCH A FUN YET LUXURIOUS DESIGN FEATURE
HOME | Betterhomes Magazine
A
nts are taking over this onebedroom apartment. They’re the owner’s obsession. “Since the photoshoot for this project, the number of gold ants in the installation on the dining area feature wall has increased from 12 to 24,” smiles Hameed Hani, founder of residential interiors design consultancy 5mm Design. “It’s such a fun yet luxurious design feature.” Located in a new building in buzzy King’s Cross, London, the home belongs to a fitness enthusiast, who runs a stylish barre workout studio and comes from a theatre and performance background. “Our brief for this home was to create a trendy yet cosy home that reflects the client’s personality,” says Hameed. With its limited space that includes one bedroom and an open-plan kitchen and living space, and a modest budget, Hameed chose to furnish the apartment mostly with collections from 5mm Design’s own furniture collection, while the built-in media unit was designed and built by their joinery service. It hosts the AV equipment that feeds the entire apartment and is finished in a textured dark charcoal cladding to add masculinity and depth to the design, while smoky glass mirror panels were added on both sides of the unit to create the illusion of a larger space with reflections. “This immediately brought a bright and airy feeling to the space,” reveals Hameed.
24 | bhomes.com
Indeed, a neutral palette of grey, taupe, charcoal and blue – the client’s favourite hue – was chosen, along with accents of mustard, copper and brass for an elegant look. To contrast with the dark feature wall, light colours were picked for the living room furniture, and the marble tables were designed in-house. “We complemented these with a silver rug and natural coloured sofa.” Pops of colour were added with the mustard chair and graphic cushions (Horse Jacquard, Forest Illustration and Swirl cushions by 5mm Design). Meanwhile, metal finishes added liveliness in the dining area. Rich colours and layers provided a warm and lavish feel to the bedroom, with the main textured headboard wall giving the space a wow factor. “We used a cork wall covering that features blue, taupe and silver tones and contrasted it with a subtle grey soft cotton velvet upholstered bed.” Nature-inspired accessories from 5mm Design’s rock crystal collection were used to style the navy bedside tables and complement the colour scheme, adding the luxurious finishing touch. “My ethos is that anyone can create a stylish home and the budget does not always need to be sky high,” Hameed says. “We achieved the overall design with a very tight budget and created a home that truly reflects its happy owner.”
HOME COMFORTS Your home has a direct impact on you… So create a home that reflects your personality. My interior design rule is… Start with a main focal point in a room. In this project, we used our signature media unit design, from which the rest of the design flowed. Don’t be afraid to mix colours… To create visual interest. I love combining shades that are considered non-homogenous.

Gillian Hammond, head of senior school at Repton School Abu Dhabi, on developing lifelong learners What sets your school apart from others in the city?
Since opening on Al Reem Island in 2013, Repton School Abu Dhabi has carved out a reputation as a premier school in the emirate. We offer an inclusive learning environment, appealing to families from a range of backgrounds. Our pupils benefit from an international curriculum based on the British independent and national curricula, while being aligned to our vision of becoming the leading technology school in the UAE. The school is currently rated Band A (which is a Very Good rating by ADEK).
Tell us about your team…
With the exception of Arabic and Islamic Studies, our qualified and highly trained staff has a strong background in and experience with the British Curriculum. As the only Apple Distinguished School in the region, we are recognised as a centre of leadership and educational excellence, demonstrating our vision for learning with technology. The curriculum develops pupils as lifelong learners, and encourages a spirit of intellectual curiosity in the pursuit of knowledge.

the region on implementing technology to enhance learning among students. We use technology from Apple to enhance content, while creatively implementing programmes to improve student learning as well as staff training. With a one-toone iPad to student ratio, the technology has been used by children as young as three up to those aged 11 to 14. This has taken the form of using various apps across subjects, with the help of student digital teams, who teach other students and are also involved in staff training.
What do your key facilities include?
The Repton Foundation School encompasses nursery and reception, as well as Year 1 and Year 2. It houses airy and bright educational spaces, several multipurpose halls, a library and an indoor swimming pool. A new campus, occupying a 25,000 sq m plot, is currently being developed to welcome a range of world-class facilities. Called Fry Campus, it is carefully designed for each year group. It currently caters to pupils from Years 3 to 6, and will offer three more year groups (up to Year 9) for the new academic year, starting September 2018. It will provide specialist facilities for all pupils from Years 3 to 13 by September 2020. The new campus, which can serve up to 1,800 pupils, will be a significant addition to the existing Rose Campus of Repton Foundation School. Both campuses will eventually serve 2,300 pupils.
