Welcome Letter A warm welcome to this issue of In Residence. I’m delighted to say that the market has already shown its appetite for this magazine, with the launch issue directly responsible for generating $37 million in property sales, both here in the UAE and internationally. I hope you’ll find some of the incredible listings in this issue equally appealing. In this issue we reveal the key autumn/ winter design trends to incorporate in your home, as well as celebrating the anniversaries of some of the most important design pieces ever made. We speak to Dubai-based interior architect Marie Laurent, who has helped fashion a slew of supremely stylish apartments and villas across the UAE. Like Sotheby’s International Realty,

the late couturier Charles James was of British and American heritage. Hailed by his contemporary Christian Dior as “the greatest talent of my generation,” we report on how the biggest names in fashion have contributed to the rebirth of the Charles James brand, and why it’s set to be high fashion’s next big thing once again. And in what are an important few months for Sotheby’s Auction House, we preview Doha’s Contemporary Art Sale and Britain’s Sotheby’s Beyond Limits – the world’s most exclusive sale of outdoor art. I do hope you enjoy the issue, and that you find your ideal property inside. Billy Rautenbach Managing Director Dubai Sotheby’s International Realty

KEEPING it in the FAMILY Nakkash Gallery has been a fixture of Dubai’s interior design heritage for over 30 years, as In Residence discovers Living and studying in Italy really influenced me not only as a designer but also as a person. I studied in Florence, a city with so much culture and history; I used to think of the city as an open museum with endless sources of inspiration. The Italian methodology of design is unlike any other. It really emphasises the concept and the essence of a project, and everything must revolve and fall in line with the initial idea. SCULPTING THE FUTURE Helidon Xhixha’s work is celebrated from London to Miami to Monte Carlo

s an art form, sculpture is one of the most enduringly popular in history. From carved figurines dating back 35,000 years, the art of taking a raw material and moulding and hewing it until it reaches a new form has never been more popular. Italian/Albanian Helidon Xhixha is one of the most successful contemporary sculptors, and one of the most exciting. Trained at Kingston University and the Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera, Helidon’s innovative style has earned plaudits from critics across the world, and his works grace important sites like the Violin Museum in Cremona, presided over by the Stradivarius Foundation, and the Leonardo Da Vinci National Museum of Science and Technology in Milan. His work also adorns the Presidential Palace in Tirana, Albania, where Helidon was born. Helidon’s signature aesthetic is to harness the power and beauty of steel, effortlessly

riding the wave of convex to concave to create mesmeric undulations. Helidon himself says: “I don’t sculpt materials. I use materials to sculpt light.” 2014 has seen some tremendous achievements for the sculptor. The artist recently finalised a partnership with PMG, a New York-based development firm, for collaboration on a new Florida luxury apartment building called Muse. Each apartment will have an original Helidon artwork, and some of the sculptor’s monumental works will adorn the halls and entranceway to the building. The prestigious gallery Contini Art UK, which recently opened on New Bond Street, London, starts a collaboration with Helidon Xhixha exhibiting his artworks in its space located in the heart of Mayfair. Set over two floors, the gallery covers over 5,000 square feet, and contains a permanent collection of well known contemporary and modern artists. Perhaps Helidon’s greatest success this year has come in Monaco. The small principality has embraced the sculptor’s

innovative and vital ethos with two major collaborations. Firstly, Helidon unveiled the monolithic monument Vela at the new Yacht Club de Monaco, as part of the celebrations for the new clubhouse. The five-metre tall monument, made of 316 marine grade stainless steel, resembles a sail and stands proudly next to the entrance of the clubhouse at quay level. Xhixha was also called upon to realise the trophy for the 62nd Giraglia Rolex Cup. For the first time, the yacht racing event ended in Monte Carlo, Monaco, where HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco himself awarded Roberto Tomasini Grinover’s team with a beautiful sculpture. entertaining, so her practice designed the doors on a pivot. When they’re left open they detach from the wall – emphasising the open-plan look of the penthouse further. There are only three doors in the penthouse (quite a feat when the floorplan covers a generous 7,800 square feet) and they’re painted in primary colours to make even the smallest of spaces artistic. The contemporary furniture that decorates the space is custom-made by her team of 12, based in offices in Sharjah and Al Quoz, Dubai. “We custom-make a lot of furniture, which takes a lot of time and effort,” she says, looking around at the modular sofa and glass coffee table in the vast open-plan living room. Even the wallto-wall bathroom units are custom-made. Thinking ahead, the company ordered a large amount of oak wood from Norway for the parquet flooring, and created the double-sink unit with the surplus planks. The effect is seamless, and the oak warms the white marble flown in from Italy. This year, both her furniture designs and staff are expanding to meet the high demand for her expertise. In November Laurent is launching a branded line of outdoor furniture, including tables, chairs, sofas and cushions, which will be available in Dubai, France and Switzerland. “This is not a mass-produced line, it will be small and boutique,” she’s quick to emphasise. “We have access to fantastic craftsmanship in Dubai and it would be a shame not to enjoy this. You can’t take advantage of this in Europe anymore, it has become so elitist, but here independent craftsmanship is so accessible. Good craftsmanship is now being recognised in places like Al Quoz, not only in Sharjah or Ajman, which are further away.” To showcase the new venture, the practice has recently expanded by putting down roots in the hub of craftsmanship she so admires. While Sharjah remains HQ for the business, the second office in Al Quoz is certainly an easier commute from her home on Palm Jumeirah. And, judging by the commercial and residential projects I’ve seen, I know this new officecum-showroom will look more like a contemporary New York gallery than a dusty industrial warehouse. THE GOLDEN AGE OF DESIGN The swinging ‘60s was a time of radical change. In 1963 Martin Luther King Jr. first spoke those revolutionary words, “I have a dream”; the miniskirt stunned in 1966; and Aldrin and Armstrong made a giant leap for mankind in 1969. Designers recognised the sign of the times – a sign announcing that the modern age of change and liberation had arrived. Rolf Benz, a young upholsterer in Nagold, Germany, was one such designer. In 1964 he launched his eponymous company with

dubaisir.com

the Addiform sofa, a revolutionary new design that continues to be one of the company’s signature sofas five decades on. “Those who look at Addiform 50 years later are amazed at how modern, how timeless it is, and how consistently Rolf Benz was able to seize upon the spirit of the times,” says Tobias Pfander, regional manager for Rolf Benz Middle East. “The very first sofa reflected the new longing for freedom and sense of space. Customers asked for new flexible solutions, for arrangements in different combinations. What

21

INTERIORS

was requested was not conventional seating groups but ‘furnishing landscapes’, which opened up free rein for the imagination.” How can a sofa be so revolutionary? While we see them as mainstream designs now, corner sofas and sofa beds were radical innovations at the time and completely broke up the conventional arrangement of a sofa and two armchairs surrounding a coffee table. To celebrate the company’s half-century, Norbert Beck has designed a special anniversary sofa, Rolf Benz 50, which will launch in the UAE on October 22. Combining craftsmanship with technology, the new sofa is equipped with innovative ‘relax functions’ and a diverse range of ergonomic positions, as well as hand-sewn fabrics and leathers and the engraved signature of each upholsterer. “This sofa marks a high point in the company’s 50year history,” Pfander concludes. “Inspired by the Rolf Benz classic Addiform, the successful design statement of the past continues into the future.” See Rolf Benz 50 at the Dubai showroom on Sheikh Zayed Road, or the new Abu Dhabi showroom by the Al Wahda Mall junction.

STILL HAVING FUN Verner Panton’s Fun Series is undoubtedly one of the most replicated lightshade designs on the market. Of course there’s a level of flattery that comes with this, for it’s testament to the Dane’s foresight into function and form that enables the series to transcend through decades of ever-changing fashions. “Designing timeless products is probably the most difficult thing to do, precisely because ‘only time can tell’,” contemplates Verpan representative Kim Monrad. “Fun has become a timeless classic because it appeals to a number of our senses. You cannot see the light source, so it is about shadows, reflections and the movement of light; the beautiful sound you hear when you run your hand through the shells or when they’re caught by a breeze from an open window. In addition to being a lamp as a source of light, it is a sculpture, a piece of art almost. That added value is one of the reasons it is so iconic.”

REMIXING A MASTERPIECE Reaching double digits is cause for a big party. And whom did Kartell invite to celebrate ten years of Ferruccio Laviani’s iconic Bourgie Lamp? A truly A-list crowd from across the creative industries, from Pharrell Williams to Philippe Starck. For the 10th production anniversary Kartell asked 19 designers to reinterpret the original Bourgie design for a travelling exhibition that has toured Paris, Milan and New York. At the end of the year the unique pieces will be auctioned off and the proceeds donated to charity. The five most recent designers asked to participate are Pharrell Williams, Rafael de Cardenas, Snarkitecture, Kelly Wearstler and assume vivid astro focus (avaf ). They joined other notable individuals such as Starck, Mario Bellini, Lenny Kravitz, Nendo and Piero Lissoni. The aim? To create something fun from a revered item, that was originally “wannabe bourgeoisie”. The idea for Bourgie materialised while Laviani was struggling to conjure an idea for Kartell. Brainstorming at home, he doodled the outline of 3. an antique candelabra lamp that sat on his desk – creating the lamp by chance. He says: “I liked the idea of making this object which was so bourgeois and established into something that could almost come from an oriental shop, where they sell pagodachandeliers or copies of objects made completely of plastic.” Ten years on, Starck has embellished the lamp base At the 1964 Cologne Furniture Fair Panton shook with colourful costume jewellery, while Nendo turned up the world of lighting design with the launch it upside down, and Bellini took two lamps and of his avant-garde Fun Series. EXPECTATIONS

Following on from last year’s successful Contemporary Art auction in Doha, In Residence previews Sotheby’s forthcoming sale

S

ince its inaugural auction in 2009, Sotheby’s annual Contemporary Art sale in Doha has firmly established itself as a highlight of the region’s art calendar. Held on October 13 in the Qatari capital, the sale showcases the diversity of artistic styles of some of the Middle East’s most exciting artists, alongside signature pieces by world-renowned international artists such as Damien Hirst. “We’ve tried to mix Western artists with Middle Eastern talents, emerging and more established, and at very different price levels,” says Lina Lazaar, co-head of sale and Sotheby’s international specialist of contemporary art. Last year’s sale attracted bidders from 15 different countries and achieved $15.2 million against pre-sale expectations of $11.1 million-$16.1 million, establishing 24

the highest price for an auction of contemporary art in the region. “We achieved nine auction record prices and six new benchmarks for artists that sold for the first time at auction. We’re hoping this year’s sale will, if not be at the same level, [then] hopefully achieve something a little more exciting,” Lazaar says, before adding, “but that’s the magic of the sale – you don’t know what happens in the room until it happens.” Highlights of the sale include Al Sharq Al Awsat (Middle East) by Lebanese artist Ayman Baalbaki. Born in Odeissé in 1975, Baalbaki draws most of his inspiration from the country’s 15-year civil war that raged throughout his childhood. The acrylic on canvas painting (est. $70,000$100,000) depicts the aftermath of a 1982 raid on Beirut International Airport that destroyed a Middle East Airlines plane. Bidding is expected to be spirited, as another of his works, Ya’illahi (Dear Lord),

achieved a record for the artist in last year’s sale when it sold for $377,000 against a pre-sale estimate of $100,000-$150,000. “Ali Banisadr’s The Chase is one of my personal highlights. It’s quite a substantial work by the artist that’s coming up for the first time at auction,” says Lazaar. Born in Tehran in 1976, Banisadr’s work is heavily influenced by his childhood experiences as a refugee of the Iran-Iraq war and dominated by large-scale fantastical abstract landscapes that convey something of the chaotic violence he witnessed. In The Chase (est. $180,000-$250,000), the juxtaposition of meticulous detail with looser brushstrokes creates a mesmerising whole that draws the viewer into Banisadr’s complex and deeply personal world. “We’re excited that we’ve been able to secure one of the best works by one of the hottest artists of the moment,” says Lazaar. Damien Hirst’s Tranquility (est. $1 million-$1.5 million) is undoubtedly

ART another highlight. “It was the first Damien Hirst to have been shown in Saudi Arabia so that’s created a lot of excitement,” says Lazaar. The British artist’s most famous subject is often considered to be the fight between life and death. The piece, composed of painted butterflies, a recurring symbol in his work, captures the manifestation of the most subliminal fear in human existence: death. Another key piece is Three Brothers (est. $70,000-$100,000) by Monir Farmanfarmaian, a pioneer within the contemporary Iranian art world who blends traditional and avant-garde. The artist has readapted reverse-glass painting, Khatam kari (inlaid marquetry) and Aineh-kari (mirror mosaics) – both defining decorative features of Persian stately homes and palaces – to create a breathtakingly modern geometric mirror triptych. Meanwhile, Blue Wave (est. $70,000-$100,000) by the internationally acclaimed master of calligraphy, Nasrollah Afjei, is a flawlessly fresh work. Practising for over 27 years, the artist believes

While Iranian artists have dominated the Middle Eastern market in recent years, Lazaar says this is slowly changing. “When a country opens up you see a surge of talent and creativity emerging, then slowly awareness propagates throughout the region and things became a little more balanced,” she says. “I think because of the growth, the awareness, and the general support, whether it’s institutional or private, the artists who stand out [now] do so in a big way. the Seahorse Fountain, a circular pond on the south lawn of the Chatsworth Garden, will house Bing’s multimedia work, which incorporates both natural and man-made elements in the form of ceramics, natural rock formations, exotic plants, and mist and lightning effects. Inspired by scholar Tao Qian’s Peach Blossom Spring, written in AD 421, Bing has created hundreds of ceramic objects and collected mountain rocks from five different regions of China to offer his representation of Qian’s story, in which explorers chance upon an ethereal utopia where humans live in perfect harmony with the natural world around them. Bing’s intention was to bring Chinese ink painting to life, and as the visitors walk around the various elements of the installation, they coalesce to provide a true three-dimensional sensory experience. The sculptures included in the Beyond Limits exhibition are available for purchase by private sale. However, a visit to Chatsworth, while ostensibly about viewing (and collecting) these important works of art, can also be an exciting day for the whole family. The grounds contain greenhouses and hedge mazes to entertain and amuse, and the farm store provides exquisitely fresh dining and snacks to keep you energised as you browse the works. There is no denying that when building a home, the outside spaces are just as important as the ones indoors – and a piece of art you can enjoy in your garden or terrace will bring just as much pleasure as any painting hung inside, making Sotheby’s Beyond Limits a must-visit for autumn 2014. Sotheby’s Beyond Limits runs from September 8-October 26. 32

I think that’s why his clothes have such a dramatic look to them,” says Mears. During this decade, James established a wealthy client base, thanks largely to introductions from Beaton, Stephen Tennant, a British aristocrat known for his decadent lifestyle, and writer and politician Harold Nicholson. Yet he also filed for bankruptcy, the first of numerous business collapses. In 1940, he moved permanently to New York, and by 1945, had gained sufficient recognition to open his own atelier and salon on Madison Avenue. Here he worked in the pure couture tradition, custom-designing, fitting, and creating new garments for America’s most stylish women, including heiress Millicent Rogers, journalist and socialite Austine McDonnell Hearst, philanthropist Dominique de Menil, and entertainer Gypsy Rose Lee. Over the next seven years, he produced his most admired gowns, culminating in 1953 in what he regarded as the pinnacle of his dressmaking career: a ball gown with an undulating four-lobed skirt known as the “Clover Leaf ”. He went on to create several equally memorable designs – the “Butterfly,” “Tree,” and “Swan” gowns – along with sculptural coats. Feted by his clients and peers, he won two prestigious Coty Awards in 1950 and 1954, which cited his masterful skills as a colourist, draper, and sculptor, and the Neiman Marcus Award in 1953, America’s fashion Oscar. 36

Cecil Beaton, who went on to play an important role in developing and promoting James’s career. In 1924, his parents sent him to Chicago to work for a large utility company founded by a family friend. After disrupting the office by showing off the batik beach wraps he had designed, the flamboyant teenager was reassigned to the architecture department, where he absorbed some of the technical concepts that he would later apply to great effect in his designs. After quitting his desk job, James set up shop as a milliner and was embraced by the doyennes of Chicago society. In 1928, he moved to New York, and then to London the following year, selling his hats to American department stores. By the early ‘30s, he had moved on to designing clothes in London, and then Paris, developing a lifelong fascination with complex cuts and seaming, and creating key design elements that he would use throughout his career. “James took hat-making methodology, such as the use of heavy structural

James’s prodigious talent was matched by maddening perfectionism and a difficult artistic temperament. “He was really very meditative in the process of creating design. He would take something and work on it and work on it and that’s very antithetical to the way the fashion industry operates,” says Mears. He seemed to care little for the financial implications – reputedly once spending three years and $20,000 perfecting a sleeve – and his exacting standards routinely jeopardised commissions and contracts. “James was notorious for not delivering dresses on time and even taking back dresses he had sold to clients, so I think his relationships with not just business partners but even clients was very complicated,” says Mears. Eventually, financial improvidence destroyed his business; in 1958, the contents of his Madison Avenue atelier were seized to pay creditors. At the same time, his four-year marriage to wealthy divorcee Nancy Lee Gregory faltered. The somewhat surprising union was widely considered to be a financial move, although James insisted it was not; the couple had two children but eventually separated in 1961. In 1964, he moved into the Chelsea Hotel, a haven for down-on-their-luck creative types. During his last years, he became more petulant and prone to accusing others of stealing his ideas, but also held court with a coterie of devoted clients and admirers, perfecting old designs and nurturing young talent until his death, aged 72. dubaisir.com

McLaren 650S coupe Don’t be fooled by its looks. McLaren’s newest production isn’t merely a 12C with a facelift. The 650S (named after the engine’s horsepower output) sits above the 12C in price and refinement, and below the P1 hypercar – it’s not meant to replace either, rather to augment the stable. It takes cues from both, too. McLaren has poured all the learnings from the 650S’s forerunners into the twinturbocharged, 3.8 litre V8 of the new model. Despite the formidable power of the engine, the 650S is as smooth and utterly refined at 60mph (reached in 2.8 seconds) as it is at 120mph. The boost gently pushes you back into your carbonfibre race seat in increments, and there is always the delightful feeling that there’s more to come the further you depress the pedal.
