go out and about You’re spoilt for choice when it comes to activities, both Uptown and Downtown. Here’s our pick of the best...
Hit the shops There are few things Dubai does better than shopping – and there’s nowhere more exciting to indulge your retail therapy habit at The Dubai Mall. It spans some 12 million square feet and boasts all manner of first-class attractions – including an Olympic-sized ice rink and 22-screen cinema – as well as almost 200 restaurants and cafés. But it’s the stores that really make the mall, all 1,200 of them – 165 of which are brands’ flagship outlets. Lovers of haute couture will have a particular weakness for the mall’s label-loaded Fashion Avenue and Galeries Lafayette, a multilevel masterpiece that offers up floor after floor of fantastic designer garb to the city’s sartorially minded citizens. Other big names to watch out for are New York favourite Bloomingdales; bafflingly vast bookstore Kinokuniya (or ‘Book World’); and the inhouse Gold Souk, which plays host to dozens of jewellers. There’s plenty on offer for kids, too, including Dubai’s first and only branch of Hamley’s, which helps to fire the imaginations of children with over 100,000 toys, impromptu

musical interludes and magic shows performed by perma-smiling staff. Just next to The Dubai Mall is the Souk Al Bahar, a beautiful shopping spot designed with traditional Arabian flair and lit by elaborately decorated lanterns. It’s lovely strolling through the air-conditioned walkways and browsing the boutiques, and it’s blessed with dozens of great restaurants and cafés offering views over The Dubai Fountain. Meanwhile, over in Uptown, you’ll find Dubai Marina Mall, a great modern shopping spot built around a huge, airy central atrium where local residents meet up for a coffee and a chat before hitting the stores. Once you’ve picked up some new sports gear at Reebok, a pretty dress or two at Roccobarocco and some jewellery at Ahmed Seddiqi or Damas, it’s time to pop across to The Address Dubai Marina, which is directly linked to the mall, for a slap-up lunch at Mazina.
See the sights You cannot leave Dubai before visiting Dubai Aquarium & Underwater Zoo, an awesome attraction at The Dubai Mall. Here you can peer through the world’s largest viewing panel at over 33,000 aquatic creatures – everything from sand tiger sharks to eagle-like stingrays and pokerfaced groupers – or take a stroll through the fishfilled, water-ringed tunnel, where you just might see divers feeding the fish. Just upstairs on Level 2 is the amazing Underwater Zoo. There are three environments to explore in this extraordinary attraction, the first of which is the ‘Rainforest’ where you experience freshwater exhibits and see catfish, otters, piranhas and water rats. Then there’s the

‘Rocky Shore’, where you can meet a colony of Humboldt penguins, a giant octupus, giant spider crabs and harbour seals. Finally, kids will love the ‘Living Ocean’ zone, where they can check out leafy sea dragons and moray eels. Once you’ve been amazed by the natural world, prepare to have your breath taken away by the man-made one by visiting At the Top at Burj Khalifa. Every major city has its landmarks – London its Big Ben, New York its Statue of Liberty and Paris its Eiffel Tower – but topping them all, in terms of sheer size, is the 828-metre-high Burj Khalifa. Its needle-like structure punctures the clouds and provides an awe-inspiring, postcardperfect sight for visitors to Dubai. At the Top is an observation deck on the tower’s 124th floor – reached via a fascinating display on the construction of the tower and an ultra-speedy lift ride – which offers visitors jaw-dropping aerial views of the city.
Entertain your kids and teens Your kids will love hanging out at KidZania®, a cool edutainment centre at The Dubai Mall. KidZania® is a real world in miniature, where kids can dress up and play at being mechanics, painters, firefighters and more, and be paid for their work in the local currency, KidZos, which they can then spend. At KidZania®, children
learn life skills, develop their physical and intellectual abilities and – most importantly – have a huge amount of fun. It’s the most imaginative theme park for children we’ve ever heard of. Older kids, teens and young-at-heart adults, meanwhile, should head for SEGA Republic, a 76,000-square-foot theme park at The Dubai Mall. It’s got a section specially for younger kids but otherwise it’s open to all – so whether you’re 15 or 50 you can get involved with the latest arcade games, plus motion-simulator rides, a spin coaster and sports experiences galore.
Hit the Great Outdoors Make your way to the Uptown area for two brilliant outdoor experiences. The first is taking a boat out from Dubai Marina Yacht Club and going sailing. The Yacht Club is right next to The Address Dubai Marina – if you’re staying at the hotel you can get the concierges to organise your sailing jaunt on your behalf. You can head out on fishing trips or simple pleasure cruises, and either hire your own vessel or go out as a passenger on a crewed boat. If you go for the pleasure cruise option, you’ll be heading out The Address

in ‘The Athena Dubai’, a 50-foot, two-level beauty which can happily accommodate 12 for a cocktail cruise or eight for a dinner cruise. The other outstanding al fresco experience is playing 18 holes of golf at The Montgomerie Dubai. It’s a wonderful course, which covers 265 acres and includes 14 lakes, 93 acres of landscaped gardens and rolling fairways. You’ll find all the holes exciting and challenging – particular joys include the 13th, built in the shape of the UAE and with a teeing area of 360 degrees, and the water-lined ninth hole, a tricky par five. And when it comes to relaxing after your game, you’ll find the terrace of The Academy a heavenly spot to kick back with some drinks.
Pamper yourself When it comes to pampering yourself, there are five key spots you need to know about. The first is The Spa at The Address Downtown Dubai, where you’ll find reflexology, ayurveda and shiatsu, as well as Hawaiian, Thai and Balinese massages. There’s a dedicated room for aromatherapy treatments as well as a cold room to help stimulate your circulation before your massage begins. Next up is The Spa at The Palace – The Old Town, where there’s a host of touches you won’t 10

find in most spas, including Oriental bath houses equipped with hammam tables. We recommend booking yourself in for one of their wonderful cleansing body wraps. Meanwhile, just next door is The Spa at The Address Dubai Mall, where they take a holistic approach to therapy: their body scrubs are particular winners, especially when finished off with a dreamily good head massage. Over at The Address Montgomerie Dubai, meanwhile, there’s an Angsana Spa, whose therapists have all been trained in Thailand, and deliver superb reflexology, massages and facials in a tranquil, flower-scented space. Angsana places great stock in using only natural ingredients and fuses Eastern and Western techniques to excellent effect. Finally, at The Spa at The Address Dubai Marina, you’ll find treatments using essential oils and treatment rooms overlooking the marina. For the ultimate in relaxation, book their outstanding three hour ‘De-stress Focus & Clarity’ treatment.

Asian The Address Downtown Dubai is the proud home of one of the city’s best Chinese restaurants, Hukama, a glorious place to indulge in authentic Chinese cuisine. Dishes not to miss include the sautéed seafood noodles, the wok fried sweet and sour chicken, live scallops with yellow bean crumbs, wasabi-coated king prawns and the fabulous peking duck. And if you head down on a Friday you can enjoy a traditional Yum Cha of delicate dim sum and specialty teas. If you’re in the mood for Thai food, you should head to Thiptara at The Palace – The Old Town. Thiptara means ‘Magic at the Water’, and the setting, on the edge of the lake and illuminated by flaming torches, is wonderful. You’ll love the restaurant’s Bangkok-style seafood, and you mustn’t leave without trying the tongue-tingling phad prig Thai dam, a stir-fried mix of Alaskan crab and black pepper sauce.
