An intuitively-planned grid system means getting around Abu Dhabi is best done by car – you can rent a vehicle from one of the many car rental companies. If you’d rather let someone else take the wheel, taxis are plentiful and reasonably priced. There’s a decent bus network too. To traverse the water, try Jalboot ferries – with a all-day pass you’re free to cruise.

T
he UAE capital has no shortage of plush abodes but let’s kick-start proceedings with some of the latest hotels to open. The stunning Four Seasons Hotel Abu Dhabi at Al Maryah Island, which opened in May 2016, boasts a premier location on the waterfront. The guestrooms are a masterclass in understated luxury, with a hint of urban chic – think floor-toceiling windows and huge, spa-like bathrooms. Opt for the Deluxe Four Seasons Executive Suite for abundant space and views to remember. While you’re there, head to Dahlia Spa to unwind and the third-floor pool deck for panoramic views by day and a chillout lounge by night. With everything you could wish for, including style and
elegance, this place feels like a resort but is just minutes from downtown Abu Dhabi. Downtown is where you’ll find another of Abu Dhabi’s latest offerings, Marriott Hotel Downtown, Abu Dhabi. Centrally-located, this shining tower is fresh and modern, with a rooftop pool and a wonderful Saray Spa. Those travelling with kids can enjoy interconnecting rooms, childfriendly menus and a small kids’ pool that’s perfect for splashing around in. Make the most of your address in the heart of the city by exploring the nearby malls, stores and cafés. In the West Corniche area of the city you’ll find Bab Al Qasr Hotel. The gilded property is truly something, blending traditional Arabesque style
with contemporary comforts and looking like something straight out of an Arabian Nights tale. Rooms are well appointed with views of the Corniche and Arabian Sea and capture the inviting essence of Arabia, with a touch of Moroccan spirit. Those seeking adventure would perhaps be well advised to head a little bit out of town for a stay in the Marriott Hotel Al Forsan, Abu Dhabi. Located in Al Forsan International Sports Resort, there’s a whole host of activities on offer, with football and rugby pitches, basketball, tennis and volleyball courts, paintball, karting, shooting, wakeboarding and waterskiing. The hotel itself has a contemporary feel, with floor-toceiling windows offering great views
12 We Love Abu Dhabi of the area and Marriott’s signature Saray Spa – the perfect sanctuary for relaxing after all that adventure. Neighbouring Dubai may be able to claim the world’s tallest building, but Abu Dhabi boasts the world’s highest suspended presidential suite. Overlooking the sweeping corniche, the two-storey Abu Dhabi Suite at The St. Regis Abu Dhabi is housed in the skybridge, connecting the twin Nation Towers some 200 metres above the ground. Inside, opulence abounds: a cinema, spa and private elevator are just some of the highlights. If your budget doesn’t quite stretch to this, sequester yourself in one of the classically decorated rooms, replete with large marble bathrooms. Nearby is Jumeirah at Etihad Towers, which occupies one of five sky-reaching glass towers that look out to sea. The lobby here is spectacular, made up of soaring panoramic windows and oversized glitter balls that dazzle overhead. It’s a hotel chock-full of standout attractions – three pools, a great spa and a handful of gastronomic delights – and large and luxurious rooms with spectacular sea views. There’s also direct access to Avenue at Etihad Towers, a boutique mall with over 30 designer stores to browse, along with some great dining options. Conveniently connected to Al Wahda Mall, Grand Millennium Al Wahda is another top pick for those who love to shop. This five-star hotel has contemporary rooms, a rooftop pool, and a fantastic spa with 11 treatment rooms, plus plenty of dining options to boot. Book a Junior Suite for lots of space and enjoy complimentary refreshments and hors d’oeuvres in the Club Lounge each evening. For a casual evening out, Porters is one of the most popular spots in the city to catch up on all the sporting action. Away from the city centre, Abu Dhabi is home to protected mangrove forests that stretch for seven kilometres along the Eastern Ring Road – it’s here you’ll find Eastern Mangroves Hotel & Spa by Anantara. It looks every inch the royal residence and is the perfect place to stay for those looking to get back in touch with nature.

The Renaissancestyle palace has all the trimmings needed to keep you in the lap of luxury
With elegant rooms, an idyllic infinity pool and the acclaimed Anantara Spa – its opulent hammam is one of the best in town – you’d be forgiven for never wanting to leave the hotel, although the prospect of a kayak tour through the mangroves may well convince you otherwise. Looking out towards Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, The Ritz-Carlton Abu Dhabi, Grand Canal is a similarly serene waterside retreat. The crescent-shaped, Renaissance-style palace has all the trimmings needed to keep you in the lap of luxury, including 85 beautiful villas and a huge spa, while foodies will delight in the vast choice of restaurants. Book a Club Level room and you’ll be able to enjoy continuous (and complimentary) offerings throughout the day as you soak in the truly splendid view. Just across the creek, Shangri-La Hotel, Qaryat Al Beri, Abu Dhabi also boasts magical views of the mosque. Here you’ll get a true taste of Arabia, channelled through the low-rise architecture, lush décor and warm service. Nearby, there is a traditionalstyle souk that you can reach via meandering waterways aboard an abra. Go for a post-lunch stroll around shops before relaxing on the hotel’s slice of soft sand beach, or within the confines of its superb spa. By comparison, neighbouring Fairmont Bab Al Bahr, Abu Dhabi is strikingly modern with an exterior made of sheer blue glass. The rooms,
14 We Love Abu Dhabi however, are warm and inviting with walnut wood panelling, earthy tones, stylish curved sofas and comfortable beds. There’s an Olympic-size swimming pool with dedicated family areas and a pristine beach. Plus, you can take a water taxi to the Eastern Mangroves Promenade, just a 25-minute ride away. On the ever-popular Yas Island, Yas Viceroy Abu Dhabi is a modern architectural showstopper. Straddling Yas Marina Circuit, home to the Formula 1 Grand Prix, a veil of steel and over 5,000 diamond-shaped glass panels connect two hotel towers. The façade is particularly captivating at night when it’s bathed in coloured light. While the racetrack setting is the only one of its kind in the world, the hotel is not just a hotspot for motoring fans. Guestrooms and suites feature a king-sized bed and an all-glass bathroom with a deep soaking tub, while the two-storey Presidential Suites come with a private lap pool. Elsewhere, there are two rooftop infinity pools, countless restaurants and bars and a great spa. Staying on Yas Island, the everpopular Crowne Plaza Abu Dhabi - Yas Island boasts unbroken views of the golf course and the inky-blue ocean beyond from its lobby. There are also soothing vistas to be had from the guestrooms and, best of all, from the swim-up Sundowner Pool Bar. Back inside there’s a good spread of dining options and a Kids’ Club that entertains four- to 12-yearolds – that’s assuming they have any energy left after a day exploring the capital’s entertainment isle. Parents, meanwhile, will have no problem winding down in one of the hotel’s comfortable suites. If your budget is more four-star than five, you won’t regret booking a room at Radisson Blu Hotel, Abu Dhabi Yas Island, where the views on offer are no less outstanding. Book a Business Class Room with a sun-soaked private balcony and you’ll receive complimentary drinks and delicious snacks throughout the day. Just across the way, Yas Island Rotana is another great choice. Go for
a Club Rotana room and get access to complimentary breakfast, afternoon tea, evening drinks and canapés, as well as a whole host of extras. Over on the beautiful Saadiyat Island, which is fast becoming the leading cultural hub of the Middle East, thanks largely to the opening of Louvre Abu Dhabi, The St. Regis Saadiyat Island Resort, Abu Dhabi feels like a grand Mediterranean villa with a nine-kilometre-long beach, sprawling landscaped pools, and seven bars and restaurants. The hotel also boasts one of biggest suites in the UAE; spanning two whole floors, the Royal Suite features a Steinway grand piano, billiards room, mini-cinema, and private pool overlooking the sea. The legendary St. Regis butler service is laid on for all the guests. Nearby, Park Hyatt Abu Dhabi Hotel & Villas offers unobstructed views of the Arabian Sea and Saadiyat

Beach Golf Club from its guestrooms and restaurants. Décor is luxurious yet understated, with oak and walnut finishes and white marble bathrooms. All rooms have large terraces, while the two- and three-bedroom villas feature a private plunge pool. Heading back towards the city, Mafraq Hotel is a great family option. Situated on the outskirts of Khalifa City B, a 20-minute drive from the city centre, the property has 250 guestrooms, five restaurants and lounges, palm-fringed swimming pools and a children’s play area. If a change of scene is your prerogative, get away from it all amid the sweeping red sands of the Liwa Desert. Around a two-hour drive from Abu Dhabi city, the palm-shaded courtyards, jewel-studded lanterns and Arabesque décor at Qasr Al Sarab Desert Resort by Anantara is like a page from 1001 Nights. The accommodation of choice is the Pool Villa, which allows you to soak in a plunge pool while drinking in the sight of seemingly endless dunes. Another great escape awaits on Sir Bani Yas Island where Anantara offers three distinct experiences. Stay at the fortress-inspired Desert Islands Resort & Spa by Anantara, the shoreline barasti villas of Anantara Sir Bani Yas Island Al Yamm Villa Resort or get an up close view of the wildlife at Anantara Sir Bani Yas Island Al Sahel Villa Resort. Embark on a 4X4 adventure to see some of the beautiful free-roaming wildlife such as giraffe and the rare Arabian Oryx. Then watch the sun set before dining al fresco at one of the superb restaurants under a starlit sky.

n Abu Dhabi shopping stalwart, Marina Mall, located in the Corniche area and overlooking the Arabian Gulf, is home to an enticing selection of fashion, leisure and entertainment brands arranged over five levels. Serious shoppers can browse over 400 outlets, including designer and high-street fashion brands, beauty emporiums and electronics shops. Refuel in one of the many eateries and, if you’re feeling flash, stop by the Mercedes-Benz car
showroom. There’s a packed calendar of events, with entertainment on tap in the form of a bowling alley, a ninescreen VOX Cinemas, Magic Planet and Bounce Abu Dhabi (the Middle East’s largest indoor trampoline park). There will be a lot more to enjoy in the future, too, as the mall is currently undergoing a Dhs3 billion expansion to upgrade the existing facilities and add 300,000-square-metres of space, alongside the development of a stunning new waterfront promenade.
Currently, the largest of Abu Dhabi’s shopping havens is Yas Mall on Yas Island. With a whole host of brands, including an impressive mixture of high-end and high-street chains, it is a one-stop shop for a wardrobe refresh. From a gadget laden Apple store to Scottish department store House of Fraser and local favourite Boutique 1, which stocks limited pieces from international designers, there’s something to suit all tastes. The mall is also a great place to hang out, with
18 We Love Abu Dhabi a huge cinema, adventure playgrounds and numerous restaurants and cafés – not to mention a whopping food court. If you have a passion for designer labels, you’ll feel like a kid in a sweet shop at The Galleria on Al Maryah Island, Abu Dhabi. This elegant mall is home to more than 130 offerings under one roof, including a mixture of high-end retailers such as Alexander McQueen, Graff, Van Cleef & Arpels and Richard Mille. Even the building itself, with its stunning architecture, is a treat for design fans. As a lifestyle destination, The Galleria runs a full calendar of engaging activities and events taking place year-round. Refuel by tucking into delicious eats or refreshing beverages in any of the waterfront eateries but don’t leave before taking in the spectacular views of the city from the atrium roof. A sensory experience like no other can be found at The Luxury Arcade, Lina Mustafa’s multi-brand boutique at World Trade Center Abu Dhabi. Featuring unique and playful décor and stocked with contemporary brands from around the world, such as Damir Doma, Marios Schwab and Yoni P, it’s the go-to place for brands you won’t be able to find anywhere else in the UAE. The capital is also home to the popular Abu Dhabi Mall, which delivers hundreds of shops, from department stores through to specialist boutiques (think Paspaley for pearls and Montblanc for luxury accessories), with DKNY and Etam Paris among the most recent additions. Plus, there’s also a fun range of entertainment and activities, such as bowling, to pep you up once you’re all shopped out. If diversity is a source of style inspiration, Al Wahda Mall is the place to be. It has cemented itself as a firm favourite among trendsetters and families, with more than 350 brands on offer, including international and local names standing side by side. Its crown jewel is the cavernous Magrudy’s bookstore, where you can discover literature from all over the world. For a beauty refresh, Solace Organics can come to the rescue with all its lovely lotions and potions, while
Galler is a must for chocoholics. Those with little ones in tow will be pleased to learn that Al Wahda Mall has great entertainment, including Wanasa Land, offering bowling, paintballing, rock climbing and, for younger tots, face painting fun. Another mall housing a huge number of high-street brands and specialist stores (some 480 in total) is Dalma Mall. Stop off at Damas Les Exclusives for fine jewellery or take a stroll to Grand Sunglasses for the latest stylish shades. You’ll find the mall located close to the airport, on the way into the city. Mushrif Mall, meanwhile, prides itself on catering to all budgets. With three floors, more than 200 retail outlets, and lots of entertainment, you can lose yourself for days if you aren’t

careful. If you’re self-catering or just looking to pick up a healthy snack, be sure to stop by The Market, the city’s largest indoor fresh food market. If you’re seeking a new watch, Khalidiyah Mall is your best bet. The mall is home to Rolex, Rasool Khoory and Sons and a Rivoli Arcade, all of which are chock-full of myriad brands. Fashion-wise, you can take your pick from an array of international names spread across three levels and congregating beneath an airy atrium. For a leisurely shopping experience, visit The Collection deep in the heart of The St. Regis Saadiyat Island Resort. Small but perfectly formed, it features 26 high-end stores and restaurants, but what really sets it apart is the stunning backdrop of Saadiyat Beach.
Away from the capital’s bustling shopping malls, seek out a more traditional shopping experience at Abu Dhabi’s souks. Of course, gone are the days when people haggle away in labyrinthine lanes, but that’s not to say you can’t sample a taste of times gone by. Rising from the ashes of the city’s old souk that was gutted by a blaze in 2003, The Souk at World Trade Center Abu Dhabi maintains an air of a bygone era thanks to ornate wood detailing and coloured glass. Inside, the traditional design features give way to more modern-looking structures. Look up and admire the impressive slatted ceiling, which allows the Arabian sun to soak the blue mosaics under your feet. Explore the individual boutiques, which serve up a refreshing change to the norm.
Beside Shangri-La Hotel, Qaryat Al Beri, Abu Dhabi, The Souk at Qaryat Al Beri is a contemporary adaptation of a typical Arabian marketplace, with Venetian influences. The waterside mall features a series of man-made canals, with abras to ferry you around. There’s a good selection of restaurants – most of which have stunning Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque views – as well as shops and stalls selling everything from jewellery and accessories to perfumes. Stop by Amouage or Hind Al Oud to stock up on scents or La Marquise or Pure Gold for an 18-karat memento. This year has seen a major rejuvenation bringing dozens of new tenants, upgrades to existing areas and an all-new Kids Learning Centre where you can park your tots before enjoying some hands-free shopping.

T
his year has been a rollercoaster ride for Abu Dhabi’s food scene, with a whole host of high-profile restaurateurs and chefs continuing to open venues in the capital and more established stalwarts offering exciting new dishes and concepts. Perhaps the biggest new opening of the year comes in the form of Nusr-Et, sister eatery of the same-named Dubai counterpart that spawned thousands of saltshaking memes to sweep the Internet. Part of The Dining Collection of fine dining offerings at The Galleria on Al Maryah Island, Abu Dhabi, meat is the main focus here. Feast on carefullyselected cuts from local producers and keep your eyes peeled for Nusret Gokce performing his famous salt BAE throw. Another newbie on the scene is the award-winning La Petite Maison, which opened in October 2017 and is also located at The Galleria. It serves French-Mediterranean cuisine influenced by Ligurian Italy – grab a table on the outdoor terrace for breathtaking views of the skyline. For something a bit different, head to Bu!, a bustling pan-Latin concept
that’s part of the dining offer at The Mall at World Trade Center. The name is short for buenisimo – the Spanish for excellent – and this place is worth a visit for its sharing style menu of tacos, costillas, ollas and parrilla favourites. There’s a buzzy atmosphere, especially during the weekend brunches. Fans of Italian fare will be delighted by the arrival Roberto’s, which launched in 2016, boasting a gorgeous setting inside Rosewood Abu Dhabi on Al Maryah Island. Under the direction of two-star Michelin chef Enrico Bartolin, the menu showcases a fresh spin on fine dining, with dishes such as marinated black cod and spaghetti with wagyu beef bacon and carbonara sauce, among others, competing for attention. Of course, there are plenty more top dining spots in the capital besides. Trendsetters are heading to Barfly by Buddha-Bar, located in the Venetian Village within the beautiful grounds of The Ritz-Carlton Abu Dhabi, Grand Canal. The two-storey restaurant and supper club has a creative menu and recreates the buzz of the original
celebrity hangouts in LA and Paris. When it comes to top-notch Japanese, Rainer Becker’s Zuma at The Galleria never fails to exceed expectations. Presentation is exquisite, service is slick and the ambiance is welcoming and refined. If you like a little guidance when it comes to choosing your food, you’ll appreciate Tori No Su at Jumeriah at Etihad Towers, which is renowned for its teppanyaki and omakase – a Japanese tradition of letting the chef decide what to serve you. For authentic Thai fare, Pachaylen at Eastern Mangroves Hotel & Spa by Anantara is popular for both its food and its beautiful ambiance.

If you’ve a taste for local fare, Al Fanar at the Venetian Village is a top spot at which to experience traditional Emirati cooking, complete with outdoor barasti booths, mud brick rooms and a mini souk to explore. For great views of the Arabian Gulf and Abu Dhabi Corniche, Azura Panoramic Lounge at The St. Regis Abu Dhabi is the place to go for a relaxed evening out with shisha, drinks and light Arabic snacks. When it comes to steakhouses, Abu Dhabi excels and we highly recommend BOA Steakhouse, a picturesque outpost of the famous Hollywood restaurant on the Eastern Mangroves promenade, as well as
22 We Love Abu Dhabi 55&5th, The Grill at The St. Regis Saadiyat Island Resort, Abu Dhabi, which is famous for its perfectly cooked, grass-fed vintage cuts. Those craving comfort food can head to Porters at Grand Millennium Al Wahda where the menu features a whole host of classics such as buffalostyle wings, burgers, fish and chips and traditional steak pies. For something with a bit more kick, Angar at Yas Viceroy Abu Dhabi has been the go-to spot for creative Indian cuisine since 2009 – no mean feat in a city that’s awash with quality food from the sub-continent. The team is knowledgeable and passionate, so be sure to ask for a recommendation – those willing to experiment with dishes such as duck galouti with foie gras or saffron and coconut scallops will be rewarded. You really are spoiled for choice for Indian food in the capital and another of the most popular spots is Ushna at The Souk at Qaryat Al Beri. This multi-award-winning restaurant serves a fragrant and colourful combination of North Indian dishes, such as traditional tandoor and slowcooked gosht khada masala served in a contemporary style setting. Signature by Sanjeev Kapoor at Nation Galleria along Abu Dhabi Corniche is another top pick, serving exquisite food with views to match. Mediterranean cuisine by the beach awaits at The Beach House at Park Hyatt Abu Dhabi Hotel and Villas. From shaari ceviche and rock lobster risotto to Catalan meatballs, every dish is divine. Mediterranean delights of the Italian variety can be enjoyed at Cipriani Yas Island, which has been a hit with local gastronomes for years now – one mouthful of its famous Carpaccio alla Cipriani and you’ll soon see why. Sumptuous Italian fare is also order of the day at BICE at Jumeirah at Etihad Towers. Combining modern and traditional Italian cuisine, the sophisticated venue has indoor and outdoor seating. Settle in for a memorable four-course meal, or dine à la carte. Either way, there will be plenty to tempt you, from lobster
spaghettini to pan roasted lamb loin and baked red snapper. For an old favourite, La Mamma at Sheraton Abu Dhabi Hotel & Resort, serves homely food and boasts an allItalian staff. The casual yet classy Bentley Kitchen at The Galleria is our pick for classic French bistro fare like steak tartare and beef bourguignon. Sit on the terrace and soak up the gorgeous waterfront views. Café D’Alsace, meanwhile, offers delicious Spanish tapas best enjoyed on the rooftop terrace overlooking the twinkling Yas Marina. An excellent choice for seafood is Flooka, which is located along the gorgeous Eastern Mangroves promenade – the paella is a must try. And finally to brunch, a stalwart of the UAE’s dining scene and a ‘mustdo’ for dedicated foodies. One of the freshest offerings takes place at Loca at The Galleria every Friday, where diners can tuck into a flurry of Mexican-centric dishes, including freshly-made guacamole, spicy fish tacos, tasty burritos and seriously

roudly championing its rich culture and heritage, Abu Dhabi is a draw card for culture fans, with an increasing number of world-class attractions being unveiled in the emirate, the most recent of which is Louvre Abu Dhabi, which opened to the public on 11 November 2017. Designed by Pritzker Prize winning French architect Jean Nouvel, it marks the first museum of its kind in the Arab world displaying a coveted collection of artworks, artefacts and on-loan items from top museums in France, plus site-specific works by renowned contemporary artists installed in the outdoor areas. The district is also home to Manarat Al Saadiyat, which has multiple gallery spaces that host heavyweight exhibitions. In the future, Zayed National Museum, Guggenheim Abu Dhabi the Performing Arts Centre and Maritime Museum will complete the vision for the major art hub. In the meantime, the capital’s original and enduring cultural icon,
Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, is an absolute must-see. Stunningly beautiful, the elegant structure (named after the founder and first president of the country), rises above the capital’s skyline in a gleaming white flourish. Get there early or just before sunset to join one of the informative walking tours where Emirati guides impart with interesting facts about the mosque and the Islamic faith for a valuable insight into local customs. Featuring 82 domes and 1,000 columns the mosque can accommodate 40,000 worshippers – many of whom kneel to pray on the world’s largest handmade carpet. Be sure to bring ID to exchange for an obligatory abaya or kandoora. Another must-do, unless it’s the middle of summer, is a wander around the open-air Abu Dhabi Heritage Village. This reconstruction of a traditional oasis-located community comes complete with barasti huts, cultural experts in local dress, and even live goats.

Al Ain Palace Museum, built in 1937, is typical of historical buildings of the UAE
Meanwhile, Abu Dhabi’s symbolic birthplace, Qasr al Hosn, is the emirate’s first permanent structure that was once home to the emirate’s ruling Al Nahyan family. There is a free-to-enter exhibition there that tells the story of Abu Dhabi and its people. Just bear in mind that some areas of the fort and exhibitions are currently under maintenance, but are due to open in 2018. For a deeper look into the country’s rich past, a visit to Al Ain is essential. With not one but five UNESCO-listed cultural sites, the ‘garden city’ is the gateway to archaeological sites that signify human occupation of the desert region as far back as 2500 BCE. The city is also full of greenery with a towering mountain, Jebel Hafeet, as its backdrop. While you’re in the area, pop into Al Ain Palace Museum, the palace of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, located on the western edge of Al Ain Oasis. Built in 1937, it is typical of historical buildings of the UAE and presents a rare opportunity to tour the private rooms of the nation’s founding father. Next, delve into Abu Dhabi’s maritime past with a trip to Abu Dhabi Corniche Breakwater, where all manner of vessels traverse the water, including traditional dhows once used for fishing and pearling. Abu Dhabi Sailing & Yacht Club (adsyc.ae) maintains a comprehensive calendar of events, in case you want your visit to coincide with one of the many races and see the sails billowing in all their glory. Alternatively, you can embark on the Abu Dhabi Pearl Journey – a 90-minute dhow cruise a through the city’s natural mangroves during which
you can learn about the history of diving for pearls and shuck your own oysters in search of a genuine gem. Further inland, you can meet the graceful hunting birds that have been so important to desert and Bedouin life at Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital. For art lovers there’s a huge selection to pick from, with plenty of galleries and museums showcasing collections from established and upand-coming artists. Etihad Modern Art Gallery has hosted significant art shows and local heritage exhibitions, creating bonds with the international art scene and academic institutions worldwide while, for international antiquities, Barakat Gallery has pieces from China, Egypt, ancient Greece and Rome among its treasures.

ou’ll never be short of ways to pass the time in the capital. If you’re keen to set the pulse racing, the best place to start is Yas Island. The entertainment hub is home to the 5.55-km Yas Marina Circuit designed by Hermann Tilke, which hosts the annual Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix in November. Its after-race concerts have welcomed the likes of The Rolling Stones, Jay Z and Blur. Outside of the racing season, the circuit operates a packed programme of activities, from backstage tours of the circuit’s hi-tech facilities to driving experiences where you can slip behind the wheel of an Aston Martin GT4 or a single-seater Formula 3000. Elsewhere on Yas Island is a number of other high-octane attractions. Chief among them is Ferrari World Abu Dhabi, the largest indoor theme park in the world. Not content with having the world’s fastest rollercoaster – the Formula Rossa hits 240km/h in under five seconds – the park has welcomed a number of new rides into the fold. Chief among them is Flying Aces, a 1.5-km rollercoaster featuring the world’s largest loop and steepest incline, and the Turbo Track, which catapults guests vertically at a speed of 102km/h before plunging them back down at zero gravity.

Make a splash at Yas Waterworld Abu Dhabi, which has plenty of water-tastic rides including the world’s longest waterslide, stretching a whopping 238-metres-long. Or, find out what it’s like to get washed down the drain on the Dawwama tornado waterslide, which sends a raft seating up to six people shooting down the 20-metre-high funnel. If that sounds a bit too hair-raising, you’ll be pleased to learn that all the rides at the 15-hectare waterpark are categorised across four thrill levels, from adrenaline rush to young fun, so the park is ideal for everyone. Slow down the pace by pulling up a sun lounger or hiring a poolside
31 We Love: Activities
Formula Rossa hits 240km/h in under five seconds cabana at Yas Beach, the island’s only private beach club, where you can also try stand-up paddle boarding, kayaking and windsurfing. For something altogether more glamorous, head to Saadiyat Beach Club on Saadiyat Island. Spend the day lazing in a private cabana by the 650sqm pool, or treat yourself to a massage or facial in the on-site spa. Keen golfers may already know that the capital is a top golfing destination with a wealth of first-class courses. Abu Dhabi Golf Club features 27 holes, including the 18-hole National Course, which is where the annual Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship (a European PGA Tour event) is played.
Yas Links, meanwhile, is the city’s only links course that enjoys a stunning setting on the coast with greens punctuated with natural sand dunes. The region’s first ocean course can be found at Saadiyat Beach Golf Club on Saadiyat Island, which features three saltwater lakes and 60 bunkers. If you’d rather be on the water than in it, Abu Dhabi Dhow Cruise organises two-hour dinner tours along the picturesque corniche in a traditional dhow – the perfect way to enjoy sea breezes, views of Abu Dhabi’s impressive skyline and a slapup meal to boot. Alternatively, you could sign up for a sightseeing tour or adrenaline
pumping ride with The Yellow Boats. Our pick is the 90-minute cruise that departs at midday from Emirates Palace Marina and takes in the Presidential Palace, Royal Palaces, Al Maqtaa Fort and Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. Family fun can be had at the 40lane Khalifa International Bowling Centre at Zayed Sports City. There are bumpers and ramps to help little ones enjoy the game and a lane-side restaurant service to keep everyone’s energy levels up. Located just off Airport Road, the sprawling complex also boasts a tennis centre, ice skating rink, paintball zone, football stadium, and half a dozen casual restaurants.
32 We Love Abu Dhabi Another great spot is Al Forsan International Sports Resort where wakeboarding, shooting, karting, paintball and much more await. The brand new Marriott Hotel Al Forsan is also located there so is the perfect place at which to grab a post activity meal, or rest your head if you decide to stay for longer. There are plenty of things to do in the desert too, from sandboarding and dune bashing (effectively being driven up and down massive sand dunes in a 4x4) to camel rides and falconry demonstrations (the latter being a sacred pastime of the Emiratis). Arabian Adventures is a well-respected company that offers all this and more, with the Sundowner Dune Dinner Safari one of its most popular excursions. It sees you sat at a traditional Bedouin style camp, where you’ll enjoy a delicious dinner under a canopy of stars. One way to really appreciate the vast magnificence of the desert is from above. You can cruise the skies with Falcon Aviation, which operates out of Marina Mall heliport and offers luxury helicopter tours of the city, or Seawings, which offers scenic seaplane flights that take off and land back at Yas Marina. Another way in which to experience the sensation of flying without actually taking to the skies is at Spacewalk Indoor Skydiving at Abu Dhabi Country Club. Daredevils of all ages can enter a massive wind tunnel, which propels you into the air, thus simulating the sensation of skydiving (qualified instructors are on hand to help you get the knack of it). If, after all that activity, you’re in need of some head-to-toe pampering, you’ll be pleased to learn that there are plenty of luxury spas to pick from. One of the best in the city has to be Eastern Mangroves Hotel & Spa by Anantara – we recommend the fourhour Arabian Dynasty treatment. Alternatively, for the full VIP experience, book into the Viceroy Presidential Treatment Suite at ESPA at Yas Viceroy Abu Dhabi, which comes equipped with its own hammam, steam room and revitalising colour therapy. And relax.
