OUT

6th annual Junior auxiliary Prohibition event

The Junior Auxiliary hosted it’s 6th annual Prohibition event this past January. Over the course of several months, the members of JA carefully deliberated, planned, and organized everything for this roarin’ good time: bartenders were hired, as well a DJ; food and alcohol was included in the ticket price; all linens, table, and chairs were donated; the VIP parking was secured; and the gaming tables were set up and dealt by the pros. As guests entered the Hamp Williams Building, they were greeted by videos promoting what the Junior Auxiliary of Hot Springs truly believes in: the youth. Pictures from their events past adorned the screen as guests were separated into two lines for admission. As people trickled in throughout the evening, DJ Kramer kept the dance floor busy and the gaming tables stayed hot! 8

| Hot Springs LIFE & HOME | WEDDING ISSUE • SPRING 2020

This year, different from years past, Kendra Scott set up a table so guests could sip and shop- and who doesn’t love that?! A table was set up in the lobby area with prize packages guests could win by raffle and multiple silent auction tables lined the wall in the main room. Another successful Prohibition has now come and gone, and the Junior Auxiliary of Hot Springs would like to thank everyone who was involved. To all sponsors, all guests, all who donated their time, products, and staff; JA of Hot Springs thanks you. Nothing anyone did went unnoticed or unappreciated. Because of everyone involved we were able to raise the money needed to fund our projects and events we host throughout the year. These events are what put smiles on the children’s face, and without you none of this would be possible. We thank you and look forward to next year! ∞

FINANCE

How Much Can I Spend Without Telling You?

I

f you are soon to be married–congratulations! I realize there may be so much going on that you probably can’t even consider thinking about the financial side of this new relationship. Your schedule is packed with wedding dresses, tuxedo rentals, rehearsal dinners, chair covers, seating charts, or maybe just the directions to the Justice of the Peace! Either way, marriage should not be taken lightly and should be just the first step toward a long, healthy and lasting relationship. In the midst of all the planning, I’d also recommend that you’d take a moment to ask each other, “Where are we now financially?” This is a question that suggests that you sit down and make a list of what you own and what you owe–a snapshot of your financial net worth. Spreadsheets are easy to do and you will be amazed at how much fun it is to look back five years from now and to see your progress, realizing your net worth was probably next to nothing and maybe negative when you married (assuming a first marriage and recent college graduation). This list will give you both a chance to see what you are bringing to the marriage financially and hopefully open the door to remove any surprises. Writing things down can

provide a completely different picture than what we thought or said. Once the wedding and honeymoon are behind you, update the “Where are we now?” list. Next, start a second list, “Where are we going?” This is a list about prioritizing, “Do we want to pay off school debt? Travel? Buy a house?” Even better yet, address the issue of “How much can I spend without telling you?” If you are both headed in the same direction and have similar goals, you have a much better chance of success and less stress. It’s never a bad idea to complete this list before the marriage. I’m a fan of Benjamin Franklin and his wise and accurate statement, “Failing to plan is planning to fail.” Take a few minutes to plan your futures, but do it together! Here’s an idea about what to do with cash presents you didn’t spend on the honeymoon–get your estate plan done! Newlyweds don’t have wills, powers of attorney, healthcare powers because they typically believe they don’t have anything. But with their new jobs they probably have life insurance or retirement plans. It’s likely you will need to complete beneficiary changes. You may have assets you have inherited like investment accounts or real estate. It’s

a great time for the two of you to sit down and determine what you have in this newly created estate. You may also find there are assets and liabilities that should not be changed to protect the innocent, like restructuring student loans. Your attorney and your financial planner can really come in handy at this time and might keep you from making a mistake that could impact both of your futures. Also, keep in mind that account titles can vary significantly, especially in a second marriage. Keeping pre-marital assets in individual names can make sense. The same goes for inherited assets. Getting married is just the start of a wonderful experience that is full of change and challenges. Continue to plan together and enjoy the journey! ∞ Bill Kerst President, Community First Trust Company He has been conducting educational seminars on IRAs, asset management, and trust management for over 15 years. Ring by Spring

A

s the New Year begins and horses are off to the races, more and more couples will be getting engaged and tying the knot. White dresses and first dances are a great beginning to a marriage, but there are some valuable things to consider before the big day. In this brief article, I will discuss things to consider before the marriage, during the marriage, and after the marriage. A lot goes into planning a wedding: Cake, food, music during the wedding, music at the reception, dresses, suits, drinks, photographers, videographers, honeymoons, venues...you get my point. In wedding planning and all event planning, there are endless moving pieces and the best way to ensure that the pieces are in place is a good contract. No matter who you are working with for the big day, the best thing to protect both the couple and the provider of service is a well-drafted contract. A good contract should remove any confusion about money, time, place, expectations and terms. Signing a contract is not the end of the process however. Safe storage of each and every document from vendors is crucial. Find a place that you can keep all documents regarding your wedding that will be dry, free from tampering, and easily accessible (an accordion file is great for organization). Another great idea is creating a separate wedding email that is used as the only communication between couples and vendors. A dedicated wedding email facilitates ease of access and reduces clutter with personal or business matters. Finally, on the big day, have a trusted someone keep the folder of documents handy to quickly correct any misunderstandings the vendors may have about what was expected of them.

Another form of contract, one that is not between the couple and the vendors but rather between one future spouse and the other, is a Prenuptial Agreement. Prenuptial agreements have long had the reputation of being unromantic and generally a buzzkill. But in today’s age when half of all marriages end in divorce, it is a great idea for most couplesto consider before walking down the aisle. A prenuptial agreement is a contract and agreement between two people who plan to marry. In a prenup, couples typically spell out how certain financial issues will be decided if they divorce, such as property division, alimony (spousal support) and even certain inheritance rights. An open and honest sharing of financial information often leads to important discussions about how each of you see your future for yourselves and your family. Because a prenup is determining a spouse’s rights after the termination of a marriage, both parties should take the opportunity to consult with an attorney prior to signing a prenuptial agreement. After the sparklers are burned out, I recommend working on your estate plan. At a bare minimum, I suggest new couples draft a Last Will and Testament to avoid the state determining how assets are distributed upon a death and to ensure their children are

cared for by the person of their choosing. If a person dies intestate, meaning without a will, under Arkansas Law spouses typically receive roughly 1/3 of an estate while children receive the other 2/3rds. An estate plan will vary greatly between one person and the next, depending on children, assets, debts, and prior marriages, so please seek the advice of a professional. Finally, the best habit someone can have when it comes to wedding planning, property, money, contracts, life insurance, or estate planning is safekeeping and organization. A fireproof safe or a safe deposit box at a bank is a great place for ensuring the safe keeping of important documents. Bank boxes and fireproof safes are wonderful for protecting documents, but they do not have any built in organization. So inside, keep your documents organized and perhaps labeled with an accordion file or two. ∞

bridal scene as pretty as a picture deserves the perfect frame. For the outdoor ceremony of Mary Elizabeth Robinson and Justin Bewley, a show-stopping arch featuring a crystal chandelier was draped with billows of white fabric and garlanded with berries, ferns, and lacy ribbon. A nearby wedding barn on the homestead property was chosen as an elegant country backdrop for the reception. Formal cut glass candelabras and exquisitely arranged blooms in a palette of deep and powdery blues, dusty pinks, and immaculate whites maintained an air of sophistication. The candlelit evening was the perfect balance of rural charm and polished class for the firefighter and his new bride. ∞

woodland chapel ceremony followed by a ballroom reception in historic downtown Hot Springs hotel provided the ideal atmosphere for a couple intent on elegance. “I had always envisioned a formal, timeless wedding that incorporated pieces of our personalities,” says bride Kaitlin Parker Bilbo. With assistance from her wedding planner, Kaitlin identified her desired wedding style as traditional, but “with pops of fun color”. The candlelit ambiance of the hotel’s spacious ballroom proved the ideal backdrop for the bride’s favored vivid hues, providing the couple and their guests with a formal-yet-whimsical atmosphere where they danced the night away. ∞

n planning her nuptials with fiancée, David, Erika Hill Citro says she was a laid-back bride — so much so, that the wedding planner had to check with her multiple times to make sure arrangements were made to her taste. One thing Erika was particular about, however, was the floral arrangements. “Flowers are one of my favorite things in the world,” she explains, which is why working with a creative, open-minded florist was essential. “Even my mom was wary of what I had chosen [for my arrangements], but they ended up being unbelievable!” Both the wedding ceremony and the reception took place in the backyard garden of an inn owned by the bride’s parents, at a shoreline point overlooking the sparkling waters of Lake Hamilton. ∞

hen it came to planning a wedding for Kristen Connelly and Austin Gibbs, there was no question what their first choice of venue would be. “We had a personal childhood connection to the farm from back when it was run as an actual dairy,” Kristen says. “We loved the atmosphere and the beautiful outdoor scenery that we were allowed to play with however we liked.” For the elegant event that she envisioned, the bride chose to combine available farmhouse elements with a romantic rose gold/blush/champagne color scheme to create a look that was both modern and sentimentally rustic. “Not only did we have acres of land to set up the outdoor ceremony, but also the combination dairy barn/farmhouse that has been renovated, along with two barns full of original items and memorabilia that we incorporated into the wedding.” ∞

ennifer Olson and Rich Horner’s wedding ceremony was full of meaning for them and their blended families. Everything in the wedding- from the venue and music, to the food and decorations- represented something about their relationship. They used movie quotes and concert tickets to personalize the evening, and asked guests to wear white. A local event was important to the couple with lifelong ties to the community. “We had our favorite foods and drinks and used local vendors who were amazing,” Jennifer says. Poolside at the home of long-time friends, the couple was wed by a close friend ordained for the event, the couple’s children honoring them as attendants. As evening rose, LED lighting matched the bride’s color scheme. “I chose a purple dress because I love the color, and I let my girls choose their outfits, which were a poppy-coral shade. My florist blended the colors beautifully and it was very cheerful,” she says. Rich captures their whole theme by saying, “We both just wanted a big party. We wanted it to be to most relaxing, laid-back, and fun wedding anyone had ever been to!” ∞

ometimes stepping out of your bridal comfort zone can be nerve-wracking, but with the right professionals as your guides the result can be wildly rewarding. “I had fought to have our wedding take place at our house, but I couldn’t be happier I lost that battle. Thanks, mom!” she jokes. With guidance from her wedding planner, she was able to take one full day of planning and turn it into an experience that left the bride breathless. “The courtyard setting made the ceremony elegant,” says Carsey, “and the historic warehouse reception added a sense of nostalgia to the aesthetic.” Including a full sized taco truck and vintage Chevrolet car indoors by the dance floor turned the reception into a full-blown block party where guests both young and old celebrated with the couple well into the night. ∞

O

nce Jeannie LeBlanc and Saddiq Mir witnessed the beauty available in Hot Springs, the wine country wedding they had originally planned went out the window. Everything the couple needed to create an intimate experience for close family and friends they found. Many of their out-of-town guests were accommodated in lodgings on the property where the wedding reception was held, enabling the wedding party to enjoy a full weekend together. For Jeannie, one design element in particular enhanced the intimacy of the day: “From the beginning of our relationship, Saddiq would send me orchids for every birthday and anniversary, so we used them in the arrangements,” she says. “I wanted to look around the room and be reminded of all the wonderful years we’ve spent together. My orchid bouquet was my absolute favorite!” ∞

ride Claire Trieschmann Post knew exactly what she wanted when she walked down the aisle: a venue that was “exceptional, that didn’t go along with traditional wedding decor,” as she describes it. For Claire and her groom, Chris, the interior and grounds of a revived 1920 Italianate renaissance revival building in downtown Hot Springs provided the perfect indoor/outdoor backdrop for their boho-style nuptials. For Claire’s signature style to shine, bringing softness into a former industrial space was of the utmost importance. The setting was punctuated with arrangements that combined traditional roses with unusual textures like driftwood, cattails, and eucalyptus. “It was the dreamiest,” Claire exclaims. “I teared up when I saw it for the first time!” ∞

very bride wants to look back on her walk down the aisle and remember each detail of the day being perfect. For Sarah Sands and Carter Scott, the definition of perfection meant a late October country club wedding suffused with the tasteful glamour of a black, white, and gold color scheme. “My husband and I envisioned a classic wedding with a timeless and elegant style,” Sarah explains. The bride recalls the crystallizing moment when all they had chosen had come together perfectly: “While the wedding party was getting ready, I was told they were setting up our reception downstairs. When a few of my bridesmaids and I went to take a peek of what had been done, I remember feeling a sense of comfort that everything was coming together so beautifully. The decorations and floral arrangements left me speechless.” ∞

Got Water?

4 Reasons to Drink More H2O

W

e all know water is good for us and that we should probably drink more of it. So why, then, do Americans find it so difficult to sip from what is arguably the fountain of youth? Answers vary, but the fact is, one in 10 Americans drinks zero cups of water per day, according to a study by Dr. Alyson Goodman, a medical epidemiologist for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Zero. She suspects that those who don’t drink any water (or very little) are getting it from other sources such as food and coffee, but warns this may not be enough. “Many health risks decrease when you

drink plain water,” says Goodman. Which is why, she says, the results are “mindboggling.” Robert Eakle, CEO of Alkame Water, agrees. “Without water, no living thing can survive,” he says. “It affects every area of our life and is an essential part to maintaining proper health.” However, not all waters are created equal. Enhanced waters, like Alkame Water, provide the body with more health benefits than regular water.
