EDITOR’S

LETTER

A

s I write this in the damp rain-spattered days of early summer in Joburg – think the smell of rain, that first clap of thunder and the coolness that falls after a long, hot day – one of the things keeping me going is the prospect of the run-up to Christmas, sparkling just on the horizon. I don’t know if it’s the sense of boundless joy, festive get-togethers or desperately trying to buy all those presents, but there’s something invigorating about the festive season and its all-round positive vibes. It’s something I feel we all need, this year more than ever. In this issue of Scene in the City, we wanted to tackle the festive season properly, with a sense of authenticity and reality, looking at how you can spend the holidays without thoroughly exhausting yourselves in the process. On the cover, we have The MARC – located on Maude and Rivonia corner, in the ‘Golden Square Mile’ of Sandton CBD – for which we’ve included our stylish insider’s guide on where to eat, shop and drink. In addition to sumptuous Christmas trees and glamorous window displays, if it’s designer fare and chic shops you’re after, this trendy shopping precinct that injects glamour into the financial district is your place. One of the standout features for me personally is the four-day foodie’s guide to Cape Town. The key to being truly ‘on holiday’ comes down to overindulgence. So, pick your vice – food, wine, shopping or culture – and go to town! Mabula Game Lodge is another fabulous post-lockdown escape, where you can compare and contrast cosmopolitan Joburg with the imposing wilderness. With luxury accommodation, it’s perfect for a family adventure, an unforgettable honeymoon or a multi-centre combination. If you’re staying in Joburg for the holidays, we’re here to help you find a great new restaurant to support – whether you’re looking for outdoor dining or takeout and delivery. We’ve also included some oldies but goodies, remembering the restaurant classics in the City of Gold. 04 | w w w.s c en ein t h ec it y.c o.za | December/January 2 0 2 1

For a champagne brunch (and still one of the best), I highly recommend booking for Four Seasons Hotel The Westcliff’s Champagne Brunch, where flutes of champagne, pretty pastries and exotic nibbles are a given. You can read my full review in the Food & Drink section. We all deserve a bit of sparkle in our lives after the year we’ve had! Wishing you a season of gladness, a season of cheer … and to top it all off, a wonderful year! Happy holidays.

TRONK VOËL VODKA AND NO FRILLS GIN

Born out of necessity during lockdown, West Coast Distillers’ Tronk Voël (‘jail bird’) Vodka and No Frills Gin are premium small-batch craft vodka and gin at a lower price. We’ll say cheers to that! While vodka isn’t everyone’s first choice of spirit for sipping straight, Tronk Voël Vodka makes a cracking cocktail or mixer. It’s all about a smooth and easy-drinking spirit: Lockdown provided the perfect opportunity to experiment and perfect the distilling, resting and filtering process. No Frills Gin, on the other hand, is a simple gin with no frills or flourishes in flavour, making it a great option when you’re looking for something to use in any gin cocktail. However, the creamy mouthfeel makes this a fantastic sipping gin too, whether you like it neat with a large ice cube or to dilute it a bit. Just six botanicals are used in the distillation process, resulting in a juniper-forward gin with distinct naartjie and rosemary notes on the palate and an underlying spiciness from the wellbalanced coriander. EDITOR’S PICK:

LEVEL SEVEN RESTAURANT

Up on the sixth floor of the brand-new Radisson Hotel & Convention Centre, Desmond Mabuza of Signature Restaurant group’s high-rise city outpost is another of those swanky establishments that the all-conquering restauranteur does so well. The low-lit restaurant is at just the right height for visitors who want to really appreciate the City of Gold’s cityscape and provides a space tailor-made by Cocoon Lifestyle for whiling away a few idle hours. Stop by the restaurant, which epitomises quintessential Joburg glamour, for a raft of fine-dining flavours or the more casual lounge space for a spot of whisky. Diners wander around the dining room to gawp at the views – and that’s before we tell you about Level Seven Restaurant’s upscale dishes and stellar wine list. For starters, we recommend the light and fresh salmon tartare enhanced by tomato concassêe, pickled cucumber, beetroot carpaccio and champagne foam or the golden tempura prawns in a crispy batter, served with lemongrass infused sweet chilli and tempura dipping sauces. For mains, dishes like the beef tournedo topped with a silky béarnaise sauce and the succulent beetroot-stained salmon on onion and pea ragout are beautiful to behold, but never twee. The luxurious shellfish platter, complete with baby lobster, queen prawns and langoustines, is another highlight. During the week you may be overwhelmed by the boozy business hordes, but trust us – that’s a small price to pay for the elaborately plated modern dishes with an international flavour. OLD TOWN ITALY MELROSE ARCH

Let’s be real – Joburg’s Italian restaurant game is seriously strong on all fronts, but when the hour calls for carbs, this spot turns flour, eggs and water into small miracles. Occupying a picture-perfect location on The High Street in Melrose Arch where Jamie’s Italian used to be, sitting outside on a summer’s evening feels akin to being on holiday, framing the City of Gold at its best as the sun sets. Views aside, the pastas are made daily in-house, so freshness is a guarantee across the board, regardless of whether you go for the lovingly layered beef bolognese lasagna, ravioli stuffed to the high heavens or a simple aglio e olio with spaghettini tossed in olive oil, garlic and chilli. The menu is so enticing, you’ll find yourself dithering over what to order. For starters, make sure you order the generously sized, preposterously good deep-fried burrata or the meltingly tender beef carpaccio with garlic aioli, rocket, salt and olive oil. The pasta options are bountiful, but we’d recommend the perfectly seasoned spaghetti with calamari, prawns, garlic, chilli, basil, diced tomato and fresh lemon as well as the soft, fluffy gnocchi in a gorgonzola sauce showered with butternut purée, cranberries and walnuts. This is comfort food at its very finest! Meat-lovers should try the rib eye rubbed with rosemary and thyme, served with sweet potato fries, red onion rings and prosecco sauce. Need an aperitivo before you chow down? Knock back a glass of crisp and versatile Mionetto Prosecco or a refreshing Aperol Spritz cocktail. 23 The High Street, Melrose Arch, Melrose North 010 109 8632 www.oldtown.co.za

BESPOKERY Joburg is known for many things, but until recently the city hasn’t earned much of a reputation as an epicentre of healthful cuisine. Thanks to a few directional chefs and bakers, things are looking greener. If you’re looking to fit in a gluten-free, vegetable heavy meal that actually tastes good, this Mediterranean inspired eatery has plenty to offer by way of satiating, health-conscious delicacies. The slender sunshine strip of a restaurant is a haven for foodies, promoting guilt-free ‘clean eating’ within the swanky surrounds of Parkview. Aimed at maximising convenience and choice for thoughtful eaters – be they vegan, vegetarian, ketogenic or glutenfree – without compromising on the social enjoyment of dining out, the artful small plates include lightly charred tender-stem broccoli with ash goat’s cheese, quince and hazelnut praline as well as poached Mauritian sea bass with sumac and mint gremolata. All of the dishes are nutritionally balanced, from the rosemary-kissed confit lamb shoulder with kalamata olives and confit cherry tomatoes to the harissa spiced mussel chowder that has a beautiful depth of flavour. For dessert, fill up on the luscious summer fruit nougatine made with fruits and whipped coconut cream layered on an almond base, or the silkysmooth dark chocolate ganache with a sour cherry glaze. We’re certainly sold on this place, its low-key vibe, pretty plants in pots and cleverly contrived gluten-free cooking. Drinks are on-message too, with a selection of natural and low-intervention wines. Shop 3, 66 Tyrone Avenue, Parkview 072 752 4184 www.bespokery.co.za

PABLO

SANDTON

Shakshuka haven, Pablo Eggs-GoBar may have closed down, but the go-to boozy brunch spot has found a new home in a stylish new Sandton landmark with an expanded menu and trading hours. Modern, minimal and cheerful with a raw industrial edge, Pablo Sandton in the MINT Hotel is an ode to its Melville precursor through its signature colour palette, pressed ceilings and combination of lower banquet seating and more social bar-height tables. With the dining area leading out onto the hotel’s pool terrace, the restaurant attracts a fashion-conscious crowd that also appreciates the quality sharing-style menu of breakfast and brunch dishes, mezze and small plates, pizza, woodfired grills and Middle Eastern inspired tacos. Perfect portions (not too much, not too little) and perfectly fresh, you can’t go wrong with anything on the menu – but for brunch, the red or green shakshuka bowls, smoked salmon English muffins and ovenbaked granola with Greek yoghurt and seasonal fruit with a fantastic mimosa or Bloody Mary draw the crowds. They also serve some of the most scrumptious wood-fired pizzas in the city, which have garnered the owners a loyal following since the opening of Dos Manos. THE NOBLE Sip on the city’s finest suds at The Noble, a new destination for beer lovers. Opened by the owners of Nobleman Brewing Company in Magaliesburg, this spot is full of happy dudes drinking beer while surrounded by homely furnishings and rustic tables. In accordance with the location, it eschews ‘pubbiness’ in favour of a beer-hall-cum-restaurant feel. And there’s a reason everyone’s euphoria levels are so turned up: The Illovo outlet features above-average, crowd-pleasing grub as well as a well-thoughtout drinks list, resulting in an agreeable balance between drinkers and diners. The local-focused taproom serves serious brews including a pale ale, lager and pilsner plus classic cocktails like mojitos and piña coladas. The best bar food is the burnt jalapeño poppers oozing with hot, cheesy filling, the bacon-wrapped onion rings that put a tasty spin on the classic favourite and the ‘dirty fries’ – a bowl of thick golden cut chips that are crunchy on the outside and like mashed potatoes within, tossed in BBQ pulled pork, spicy salsa and mozzarella. We also recommend the gorgeous charred and deftly spiced Greek lamb burger layered with marinated tomatoes, red onion, feta and tzatziki inside a pliant bun. BASALT In our opinion, anywhere with a dinner menu that changes with the seasons is obviously doing something right. By placing a refined focus on seasonal (and quality) ingredients, Basalt offers foodies a multi-course hit list of elevated dishes that don’t skimp on presentation. When it comes to romantic restaurants, the grande dame of The Peech Hotel ticks all the boxes. Candles? Check. Cosy corners? Check. Swish staff and a cosmopolitan crowd? Check, check, check. Here, head chef Feni Malebye-Lutalo serves a showstopping progression of three dishes that won’t leave you feeling uncomfortably full for R395 per head. Upon arrival, guests are pampered with a glass of bubbly followed by a parade of seasonal delights. Expect producecentric cooking, chef-y compositions and hints of traditional Asian flavours. The beetroot cured salmon with beet purée, salmon roe and dill gel is almost too pretty to eat, but you’ll most definitely dig right in anyway. What to order for mains? The muchphotographed slow-roasted duck breast with teriyaki sweet potatoes and miso-glazed pak choi, of course. The pan-roasted line fish is also one of Joburg’s best, served with a cauliflower steak and curry leaf burnt butter sauce. GAUCHO RESTAURANT South America is famous for its beef and for its wine. At this small and simple restaurant, chef Nikita Zoulis brilliantly captures the spirit and versatile flavours of the continent – it’s as close to dining in Argentina or Brazil as you’ll find in Joburg. Expect cosy, moody lighting to accompany the authentic menu items as well as sidewalk seating for when the weather cooperates. Meat forms the backbone of the new summer menu, with plenty of open-flame specialties including fillet, rump, sirloin, T-bone and rib eye. The freshly made empanadas filled with beef and root vegetables, lemon chicken, leaks and fresh herbs or spinach and Danish feta are enough to stimulate your taste buds before moving on to a main course. The steaks are excellent and you’ve got a range of sauces, from chimichurri to red wine sauce, to pump up the flavour even more. There’s also a beautiful burrata pasta that makes use of this summer’s tomato and basil and pairs them with burrata cheese. When you toss it all together, the burrata magically melts into the most luxurious cream that oozes all over the tagliatelle, creating a silky sauce that coats every strand … yet it still leaves a few melty cheese puddles in there for you to enjoy too. 67 7th Street, Linden 087 655 4480 www.gauchorestaurant.co.za

BRING ON THE

High-end resorts like Four Seasons Hotel The Westcliff have always had fabulous breakfasts, but it seems that weekend brunches are the new mark of luxury. To our delight, the hotel’s fine-dining restaurant, which stands out from the foodie crowd for its pretty views and acclaimed menu, sees brunch the way those well-heeled Joburgers imagined: Elegant, indulgent and anything but rushed. Grab a glass of prosecco (no, make it real champagne) and kick off your weekend in the best possible way.

W

ith its sweeping views across the Johannesburg Zoo and neighbourhoods of The Parks plus reinterpreted South African fare, Flames Restaurant at Four Seasons Hotel The Westcliff makes an impression at any hour. But on the weekend, this posh spot elevates comfort food to works of art – think three cheese and zucchini quiche or oak smoked beef brisket with potato terrine, kale, rainbow carrots, beef crackling and port reduction. Whether you’re looking for a decadent way to mark a special celebration, an extravagant girls’ day out or just a weekend treat, spend your Saturday or Sunday in splendour at the Champagne Brunch, where the sparkling is cracked open between 13h00 and 15h00. Priced at R795 per person, brunch at Flames Restaurant isn’t just any old eggs and bacon affair. It’s a splurge, but it’s a drawn-out affair and there’s so much food that you’ll need to pace yourself. At this light-filled restaurant with a high-brow dining room, the weekend feast includes a glass of Champagne Baron Albert L’Universelle Brut or La Preference Demi-Sec, a cold platter for two, one hot dish each from the kitchen, a selection of local cheese and sweet treats. If the weather is kind, request a table on the terrace surrounded by the lush greenery of the hotel’s stunning grounds, which is perfect for al fresco dining and offers panoramic views of the City of Gold. Promising to add a touch of class to your weekend proceedings, the cold platter stars delicacies such as fresh Nelson Mandela Bay Oysters, maki and California rolls, a zesty Mediterranean quinoa salad, three cheese and zucchini quiche, tarte flambée topped with bacon as well as a light and refreshing soba noodles with prawn, avocado and yuzu. 15 17 || www. www.sc sceene nei nt i nthe hecci ti tyy. c. co. o.zzaa || ODceto c ebmb e r /eNro/ Jvaenmb u ae r yr 2 0 2 1 0

For mains, you’ll choose from upscale à la carte offerings accompanied by gentle music, including 16-hour sous vide pork ribs with a soy and honey glaze served with butternut purée, miso green beans and sesame seeds as well as zucchini risotto made with bocconcini, slow-roasted tomato, Kalamata olives, pine nuts and confit lemon. All of the dishes are seasonal and locally sourced, and many of them are grilled or prepared in the elegant pit-fire in the kitchen in a wide-ranging display of sophisticated food craftmanship. For a decadent brunch, try the truly crispy, golden Southern Fried Chicken – garlic and sage chicken escalope, pomme purée, Parmigiano-Reggiano and Tenderstem broccoli. We also recommend the juicy and delicious kabeljou served on a bed of Israeli couscous with asparagus, sundried tomato and parsley beurre blanc. On the cheese platter, there are all manner of cheese and crackers, and of course, homemade chutneys and preserves. When dessert arrives, the sheer mass of sweet stuff could be intimating, but thankfully the pastries taste as good as they look. The pleasantly sharp lemon meringue pie is a standout, but our favourite is the chocolate torte that’s full of rich, fudgy dark chocolate flavour. Once you’re high on sugar, there’s a cocktail list to work your way through too, including the Bikini Weather made with vodka, bitter orange syrup, lemon juice and sparkling wine and the All 4 Seasons G&T; a G&T with a refreshing burst of grapefruit, rosemary and thyme that’s become something of an Instagram sensation. What’s more, the atmosphere is lively and diners are strongly on the smart side of the smart-casual dress code. Although, truth be told, everyone will be too busy staring at the views – especially during the months of October and November when the hotel is surrounded by jacarandas and is a floral delight – to take much notice that you’ve made an effort. The Champagne Brunch operation is extremely welloiled, managing not to rush diners: There’s an art to feeling looked after, and at Four Seasons Hotel The Westcliff that art has been perfected. Come for afternoon brunch, move on to a cocktail or two and maybe even make an evening of it by checking into the hotel for the night. You are in Westcliff after all!

KNIVES AT THE

READY A smokin’-hot selection of the greatest grills at Trumps Grillhouse & Butchery

From the juiciest and most marbled slabs of beef to melt-on-the-tongue lamb shank and eisbein, Trumps Grillhouse & Butchery has got your carnivorous cravings covered. As an added bonus, it doubles up as one of the best seafood restaurants in Joburg, offering some surf to go with all that turf. So, make a reservation, get dressed up and prepare to get primal.

L

ocated on Nelson Mandela Square, in the heart of Sandton, is the thoroughly welcoming Trumps Grillhouse & Butchery. One of the most modern, forward-thinking steak joints in Joburg, everything here is done with passion – from the setting that cultivates a retro-sexy vibe with its dark tones and red furnishings to the slow, sensuous uncorking of the finest South African wines. It’s a playpen for high-rolling carnivores, suffused with wafting scents of singed fat and American whisky.

26 | w w w.s c en ein t h ec it y.c o.za | December/January 20 October/November 22002210

Whiling away the evening at Trumps – with an ice-cold gin martini in one hand and a hunk of steak in the other – is practically a rite of passage in the City of Gold. Second only to the lively atmosphere are the accoutrements, including pork or beef ribs with a caramelised, sticky crust, spatchcock chicken seasoned with Maldon salt, mussels steamed in a white wine sauce, queen prawns served with a citrus aioli and tomato chilli jam, springbok carpaccio topped with balsamic caramel and Grana Padano shavings, and a loaded caprese avocado salad. Elegant cocktails begin meals here: The zingy, aromatic drinks serve as the perfect foil to the menu of inventive cuts of meat and luxe sides, such as the blueberry daiquiri blended with fruit purée, fresh fruit juice and limes, or the hibiscus and mint G&T – a botanical variation of the classic enhanced with hibiscus extracts, fresh mint and freshly squeezed lime. On the menu you’ll spot all the usual suspects, but when it comes to meat, Trumps is shaking things up. For starters, your options range from tender pan-fried calamari tubes in a garlic and lemon butter sauce to snails smothered in a rich, creamy garlic sauce, served with fresh ciabatta bread.

S C E N E I N T H E CIT Y

FOOD & DRINK

Though it’s tempting to fill up on these savoury treats, be sure to save room for mains – once you taste the rich and well-marbled rib eye with a truffle butter and wild mushroom-infused sauce or the showstopping tomahawk on the bone with a side of onion rings, you’ll live long in the memory. The steaks come out perfectly medium-rare on the hottest plates you’ve ever accidentally touched. If you’re going to splurge on a piece of meat like that, you’ve come to the right place. Trust us, it’s worth every penny! The seafood options are similarly indulgent, with a lineup of hake, kingklip, calamari, queen prawns and Norwegian salmon grilled to perfection and served with a lime and coriander aioli mayo. Magnificent though the meat here is, don’t forget about the brand-new sushi menu. What distinguishes the sushi here from the rest of the gilded new crop of sushi places around the city is that the fish is fresh, expertly sourced and beautifully cut – and prices are hard to beat. The Trumps Reloaded – California rolls with salmon and avocado outside, topped with sweet chilli mayo, teriyaki, caviar and finely diced spring onion – and the salmon California rolls topped with shrimp tempura outshine the standard rolls that sushi-eaters may be used to. Every bite is perfection, and the chef pre-dresses each sushi piece with the perfect amount of sauce and toppings. The seared beef sashimi topped with spring onion and sesame seeds, drizzled with soya sauce and sweet chilli mayo, will captivate you too. If you’re looking for a sophisticated dining room with some of Joburg’s meatiest morsels or want to treat a fellow carnivore friend to a high-quality dinner free of pretentiousness, Trumps is just the place to do it. A ROMANTIC

retreat Kream Restaurant is a Joburg classic that’s still getting it right

More than four years after opening and Kream Restaurant in Mall of Africa continues to turn tables – and require reservations. It shouldn’t be a surprise, given owner Tufan Yerebakan’s penchant for nailing straightforward but innovative modern cuisine. Making the all-important date day or night decision can be difficult, but you can trust us when we say that this is one of the best restaurants for a romantic day or night in the City of Gold.

S

pecial but not clichéd, buzzy but not loud, intimate but not awkward – Kream Restaurant is perfect for first dates, anniversary dinners and everything in between In our opinion, Joburg is a lunch town, so we recommend booking for lunch; an especially grand time of day to dine. You’ll find that diners in crisp seersucker suits or flamboyant hats and high heels – who are decidedly in-the-know professionals looking for the next ‘it’ spot – typically fill the sleek establishment’s tables by noon. Cocktails kick off each meal and extravagant sweets signal that dinner is just around the corner. 22 | w w w.s c en ein t h ec it y.c o.za | December/January 2 0 2 1

Saturdays are especially festive: Many Joburgers start their weekend with a spirited lunch, likely with a gin cocktail or bottle of champagne. And much like leisure time, lunch is taken seriously at Kream Restaurant, where almost everything is about as laisse-faire as it gets. The artistically designed space is romantic but not overly so, falling somewhere between sophisticated and relaxed. The outdoor space isn’t quite like the interior, but on the perfect day when the sun is out, it’s still equally appealing.

With formidable wine recommendations that don’t feel rehearsed to some of the friendliest sommeliers in the business, we suggest starting your meal with an icy bottle of champagne that’s just begging to be popped. The wine list is exhaustive, offering some of the finest and rarest choices of tipples available, but it also caters to gin, whisky and cognac lovers. Here, you can taste some of the best cocktails in the city such as our favourite, the crisp and refreshing Cape Gooseberry. With a gem of a menu, whether you’re digging into sushi or duck leg confit, it’s guaranteed to be a soul-soothing, unforgettable experience. Begin your decadent daytime meal with the wild oysters served with smoked salmon, onion, tomato, basil, salsa, cream cheese and roe. If you don’t already have a love affair with the aphrodisiac snack, you will after trying these. Then, move onto the slightly sweet, buttery and soft scallops that melt fabulously on the tongue for starters. Served in their beautiful fan-shaped shell, the ocean jewels are done in a garlic and herb butter with a side of toasted ciabatta. We also highly recommend the rich, flavourful beef bone marrow, which is a carnivore’s delight served with toasted garlic, rosemary salt, port wine caramelised onions rocket salad and fresh lemon.

Our top picks are the plump, juicy king prawns immersed in your choice of lemon butter, garlic butter or Mozambican peri peri sauce and the unbelievably tender pepper-crusted rump served with a pepper sauce, chive mashed potatoes, beans and onion. The Norwegian salmon served with a zesty pea purée, chive new potatoes, fennel, beans, peas and a crispy puff pastry round is also a fan-favourite, as is the elegant linguine dish with a creamy mushroom truffle and broccoli sauce and Parmesan cheese. Finally, to end off, go with the light and creamy vanilla bean crème brûlée, a pefectly smooth custard with a brittle top of melted sugar served with almond biscotti and fresh fruit, or the silky-smooth ‘candy crush’ rainbow cheesecake with crushed candy cane, tonic jelly, candy floss, candied popcorn and bubblegum ice cream. You can ask the charismatic but unobtrusive staff to box up what you can’t manage. Take our advice and come with plenty of time – and elasticated trousers. Mall of Africa, Magwa Crescent, Waterfall City, Midrand 010 591 0023 www.kream.co.za

No matter which way you steer for mains – fillet camembert, smoked pork belly, seared Norwegian salmon, kingklip on the bone, chicken kiev or vegetarian risotto – the chef pulls out all the stops.

t’s no secret that sometimes finding the perfect gift for every member of your family can work up an appetite. Thankfully, when you’re shopping at The MARC, there are plenty of places where you can take a mid-shop pitstop or celebrate crossing everything off your list. Looking for the perfect cup o’joe? Get your morning jolt at Seattle Coffee Company, which serves up perfectly executed cappuccinos, espressos and iced coffees plus sandwiches, muffins and pastries that are baked daily. On the other hand, if you’re searching for healthy food, Kauai caters for those on a calorie-conscious health kick, diet or detox. However, everyone can enjoy the menu, which offers raw juices and shots, smoothies, salad bowls, warm bowls, wraps and snacks. For serious a.m. fuel, turn to Tashas and nosh on topnotch breakfasts like the Hummus Toastie or Salmon Scramble. No matter the hour, this café has a lot to love. Big appetite? Grab a seriously big burger or a rack of ribs finished off on the flame grill with a caramelised, sticky crust from Ribs & Burgers. Bite into the Old School Cheese Burger whenever you’re flat-out craving some flattop comfort – just add a side of chips and a ‘thickshake’ and you have the makings of an all-time great meal.

Luckily for frozen-treat lovers, you can go sprinting to Paul’s Homemade Ice Cream for a licking of summer’s finest sweets. The creative ice cream flavours keep us on our toes, from salted caramel dark chocolate and birthday cake to malva pudding and burfee. Best of all, there’s never a wrong time for your frozen favourites – the store is open from 09h00 daily, which means it’s a totally acceptable heatwave breakfast. At Saint Restaurant, you can get your fix of antipasti, pizza, grills and comforting bowls of carbs. The spacious bar, serving cocktails such as the French Martini made with vodka, pineapple juice and crème de cassis and the Summer Tease – Star of Bombay gin, elderflower, red espresso and citrus – is fabulous, but the vast dining room with its ornate plasterwork is even more alluring. You can expect indulgence from the off, whether you order the crayfish pasta or The Big Nacho pizza topped with jerked chicken. Last but not least is Wok n Roll, a place where you can go all out and explore Asian fusion food – think spring rolls, dim sum, wokked noodles, Peking duck, sweet and sour pork and a teriyaki salmon steak. Sushi such as the Yum Yum Roll filled with crab salad, pickled radish, sweet bean curd and avocado and the KFC Roll with seasoned crispy chicken are presented elegantly, but you won’t feel like you’re dining in an uptight atmosphere. Every Thursday to Monday, there’s a buffet option for R195 per person.

At The MARC, you can check off everything on your shopping list with ease, then buy yourself a gift – you deserve it. To get you in the merriest of moods, we recommend first visiting Tread + Miller for dreamy gifts to impress the chicest woman – or man – on your holiday shopping list. Run by a husband-and-wife team, Envy is another tried-and-true gift haven. From clothing and shoes to accessories, you can’t go wrong – any fashionista would be thrilled to find these fabulous gifts under the tree on Christmas morning. Buying clothes for others can be tricky, but a maxi dress, layered midi dress or tiered sleeveless dress is a safe bet, while a pair of Sweet Peas Handmade or Saint & Summer sandals will always go down a treat. Nothing adds a little magic to the holiday season quite like garland-adorned doorways, trees dripping in twinkling lights, embracing festive traditions … or a dazzling watch or gift-worthy piece of jewellery from Wilberrys. For a one-of-a-kind gift that will put you on any nice list, a Heist watch that steals the spotlight with 20 diamonds is an excellent choice. Other major extravagances include a rose gold Versus Versace watch or a Balmain timepiece featuring a unique dial or a rose, while pocket-size luxuries range from Amrita pendant necklaces and bangle sets to Tom and Fred London pebble purses. If you’re shopping for your fashionable friends, Urban Zulu has a fusion of vibrant African prints and classic feminine styles as well as track suits, golf shirt and kimonos for men, while Levisons offers high-end brands such as Armani Jeans, Hugo Boss, Christian Lacroix and Lactose. A pair of new fashion-forward sunglasses – think brands like Police, Carolina Herrera and Hugo Boss – from Execuspecs or Spec-Savers also make a great gift that will be used again and again. When it comes time to choose a present for your outdoorsy friends and family, Cape Union Mart has the most practical gifts that make being outside for long stretches of time easier and more comfortable. It can be hard to pick the right gift for a beauty lover, but if you have one on your list then lucky for you. ‘Tis the season for makeup, skincare and beauty gift sets galore at Clicks! Also, be prepared to look fabulous yourself this festive season by getting your digits decked out – as well as waxing and threading, lash extensions, facials and body treatments plus much more – at Tammy Taylor Nails. If it’s hair inspiration you’re after, then head straight to Flow Hair Designs, experts in cuts, colour, hair extensions and hairstyling, which also offers a private room for new moms or anyone needing a little privacy. Shopping for a gadgetobsessed friend or family member? Eden Tech, Cell C and Vodacom have cool gifts for tech lovers – some are even small enough to fit in a Christmas stocking.

IN-FLIGHT SKINCARE STAPLES The products that always make the carry-on cut for beauty on board CLAIRE HILL MICELLAR WATER Before jetting off, it’s best to remove your makeup to really allow your skin to breathe on board. We recommend cleansing your skin with this gentle micellar water that you’ll invest in time and time again. A cleansing water that we regularly use on repeat, this formula is enriched with native Australian desert lime extract and fatty acid esters to gently mop up dirt and makeup without removing the natural oils on the skin’s surface. Suitable for sensitive, acne-prone and mature skin, in our opinion this skin-relieving lotion provides the deepest clean of the micellar waters, so you can say goodbye to dull, congested skin. You can also use it before a deeper cleanse to help remove stubborn eye makeup. R600 from www.clairehill.co.za

REN CLEARCALM 3 CLARIFYING CLAY CLEANSER Hands up who enjoys the ritual of removing makeup more than actually applying it? Same. With this indulgent, hard-working antibacterial cleanser that leaves skin visibly clearer and calmer, who can blame us? Not only does it come housed in the most #shelfie pleasing packaging, but it also has a hidden twist. Designed to combat the appearance of breakouts and blemishes, this clay cleanser brightens the dullest of dull complexions. It lathers without stripping, washes away easily and is amazingly calming – the extra-gentle formula makes it a dream for sensitive skin. Plus, it minimises the appearance of pore size as well as reduces redness and inflammation. Get ready for your healthiest skin ever! R440 from www.renskincare.co.za

LITCHI & TITH BALANCING AROMATHERAPY BLEND SERUM Proudly South African beauty brand Litchi & Titch, who use all-natural plant botanicals in their face and body care products, have launched a range of serums that feature an impressive blend of essential oils but clock in at a relatively affordable price. The Balancing Aromatherapy Blend Serum is packed with neroli, grapefruit, chamomile and 10 essential oils to plump up skin and, over time, address concerns like dullness, dryness and sun damage. We recommend applying a few drops before hitting the pillow to wake up to skin that feels healthy and beams with a radiant glow. Your mind and soul will also love with beautifully calming aroma. As for the highly Instagrammable glass bottle, that’s just a bonus. R425 from www.litchiandtitch. co.za

SOTHYS n02ctuelle CHRONO-DESTRESSING SLEEPING MASK The struggle is real when it comes to looking radiant despite getting inadequate rest, but this sleep mask can help even the most experienced of globetrotters feel refreshed whatever the time zone. Putting a whole new meaning to sleeping beauty, it’s formulated with a concentration of stabilised vitamin C and botanicals to fill cells with the optimal amount of oxygen and help turn up skin’s natural brightness. The scent is subtle and the gel formula is light, which is great if you don’t love being aware that something is on your face when you’re falling asleep. Our top tip is to gently massage it on in circular motions to truly penetrate it deeply into skin for prime smoothing results long after you hit snooze. FILORGA HYDRA-FILLER MASK Air travel can leave us feeling jetlagged, dehydrated and desperate to hit the hotel room on arrival, but fortunately this sheet mask will have you feeling like you just walked out of a spa. It’s kind of amazing how much goodness can be packed into such an ultra-fine lyocell fibre material, and that’s what makes it so fantastic. The lightweight mask, which will fit any face perfectly (no readjusting needed), rests on the skin and infuses it with a supermoisturising blend of aloe vera, iron, zinc and vitamins A, B, C and E in just 15 minutes. It’s a little pricier than other sheet masks, but the plumped, glowing outcome is totally worth the splurge. We’re also in love with the designer-fragranceesque scent. SUKI SUKI NATURALS PAPAYA ROSE HYDRATING FACIAL MIST If you’re a fan of the Suki Suki Naturals line, you’ll fall head over heels for its hydrating face mist, which will give you a major glow in a matter of seconds. Infused with moisture-enhancing rose water to tone, hydrate and soften as well as papaya extract to speed up cell turnover, it will not only leave your thirsty skin feeling quenched but also baby-soft and refreshed. We reach for it every time our skin’s looking particularly stressed, but you can use it between your cleansing and essence steps or whenever your face needs a wake-up call. We especially love the way it brings dried, cakey foundation back from the brink and that it smells like fresh papaya. Consider this your post-vacation glow extender! For those who don’t want to travel with a huge makeup bag in tow THE BEAUTY WORX COLLAGEN BOOST FACE SERUM When our skin is feeling a bit dry or tired on holiday, this is the serum we reach for. Delivering equivalent results to one injection of collagen filler in just two weeks, it will keep your skin healthy and gorgeous all season long. The best thing about this serum is that it firms skin and gives a boost of moisture – not to mention that the super-hydrating formula feels so luxurious. Expect to see an instant dewy freshness after application, but then over the long term, it helps boost collagen and elastin to leave the skin looking plumped, youthful and glowy. After weeks of use, it helps skin become better equipped to repair itself, which sounds pretty great to us! For best results, use it morning and night. R109.95 from Dis-Chem

FILORGA LIFTSTRUCTURE RADIANCE ULTRALIFTING ROSY-GLOW FLUID

NUXE CRÈME PRODIGIEUSE BOOST 5-IN-1 MULTI-PERFECTION SMOOTHING PRIMER

Meet the best facial you’ve ever had ... in a bottle. This serum’s lightweight, pink tinted formula (that’s suitable for all skin tones) gives your skin a sheer, rosy glow as soon as you massage it on, without it looking too obvious or makeup-y. Packed with skin-loving ingredients that will help you achieve the glowiest, prettiest skin of your life, it leaves you with a plump, dewy effect that’s nothing short of enviable. It also helps correct complexion irregularities as well as visibly lifts and smooths skin. Add on a string of hydrating, calming and brightening ingredients and it’s hard not to see why this serum is a favourite of ours. Slather it on in the morning and follow up with your favourite moisturiser.

It all starts with a perfectly primed face. After slathering your face with moisturiser, reach for this primer with an antioxidant complex containing jasmine flower and natural origin perfecting powders. The non-tinted paste, which sinks in immediately, will help stave off shine, blur irregularities and signs of ageing, fill in enlarged pores for a smoother finish as well as give your foundation some added staying power. When you the clock strikes noon, your foundation will look just as good as when you applied it! A pea-sized amount is enough to prep your whole face for foundation and keep it looking flawless from dusk until dawn. Sponge it on with a damp beauty sponge to create a thin, even layer on your skin.

If you’re more of a lipstick girl than a lip balm one, this product will be the one exception. We’re even willing to bet that it will soon be your new go-to lip product (you know – that ride-or-die you carry around everywhere). A warm-weather alternative to lipstick, we just can’t get enough of this medicated lip balm with multitasking ingredients like shea butter – because there’s absolutely nothing sexy (or comfortable) about flaky, chapped lips. Not only does it work wonders on dry, cracked lips, but it’s also lightweight and non-sticky, and has the ability to soothe chapped anything – cuticles, elbows, you name it. A thin layer of the balm adds the prettiest subtle sheen to lips, and it layers nicely with lipstick too.

You don’t need to be using a million products to get the full, shiny hair of your dreams – trust us. This new range, consisting of the Restore Strengthening Shampoo, Conditioner and Hair Butter as well as the Restore Express Repair Conditioner, does it all at once. With new plant-based phyto stem cell complex technology, these products transform damaged hair in a jiffy (and for months to come), while fresh rose water softens strands to keep them looking like new and adds an irresistible scent. Our favourite product is the Hair Butter, which is fabulous whether you’re in need of a little TLC or a complete overhaul. Comb it through your hair in the shower and leave it on while you shave your legs (or longer for a deeper treatment) so it has time to get the job done.

A lot of sunscreens come with fruity or coconutty scents that are sometimes very overwhelming. If you’re not about the scented sunscreen life – or if you have sensitive skin – you might want to opt for this ultra-fine mist that leaves an invisible finish and provides an immediate sensation of freshness. No stickiness, no residue and great coverage – just a few of the things that make this spray sunscreen perfect for your face and body. It’s supereasy to apply, is less messy than lotions, can help you reach difficult places (like your back) and applies on evenly so you don’t have to worry about missing any patches of skin when you spritz. It can really come in handy if you’re going to be in the heat all day long.

REN CLEARCALM NON-DRYING SPOT TREATMENT If you’re still using toothpaste to get rid of your spots, it’s time you upgraded your methods. This skinloving spot solution works with a variety of anti-inflammatory and pore-flushing ingredients – think willow bark, maritime pine, thyme, xylitol and prebiotics – to gently calm the skin, reduce redness and speed up your skin’s natural healing process. One of the fastest working spot treatments on the market, apply it before bed and that blemish will be gone come morning. The best part? It’s non-drying and incredibly soothing, and despite its potency it’s suitable for even the most sensitive skins. FYI, it works best if you use it at the very first sign of a breakout. L’OCCITANE ALMOND MILK CONCENTRATE Post-shower moisturising can be a chore when you’re on holiday, but this body cream will turn a hassle into a treat. We’re not going to pretend that rubbing a silky, sweet-scented cream all over your body is as indulgent as eating your way through a pile of flaky, buttery almond tarts, but it’s still pretty satisfying. Enriched with a concoction of powerful almond extracts as well as nourishing almond milk and oil, this body cream melts into the skin in a creamy texture and leaves it with a deliciously nutty scent that lasts for hours and hours. Fast-absorbing, velvety in texture and impossibly addictive in scent, it’s no wonder this product is notorious for converting many to luxury body care (ourselves included). Blended with coconut and yuzu for a fresh, tropical scent, this irresistible mist leaves your strands smelling as fresh and clean as a mojito. Lightweight enough to use as a body fragrance too, the super-sensual scent is the perfect pre-date hair refresher and a first date essential. Beat the heat

Summer beauty finds we can’t live without from Dermastore The time for a dewy, glowing complexion and head-to-toe sun-kissed skin is once again upon us! While summer prepping calls for a less-is-more approach to beauty, it doesn’t mean you have to whittle down your routine to a single tube of tinted moisturiser and lip balm. When the sun’s blazing, you’ll want to feel comfortable in your own skin and protected from the elements. Look good and feel even better with these summer skincare essentials from Dermastore.

SKINCEUTICALS GLYCOLIC RENEWAL CLEANSER

Just a few drops of this highly pigmented product that’s light enough for summer offers enough (but not too much) coverage and delivers a luminous finish. Suitable for all skin types, this makeup bag essential can be swooshed on with either fingers or a brush – whichever you prefer – to take skin from sallow and uneven to dewy in a few seconds flat. It covers imperfections, discolouration, vitiligo, varicose veins, bruising, scars, burns and even tattoos on both the face and body. With UVA and UVB filters as well as Sahara prickly pear seed oil, this is a supercharged SPF that’s as good at protecting skin from the sun as it is preventing and reducing discolouration. If you love clean, refreshing scents for your products, you’ll love it. Doubling up as both a moisturiser and an SPF 50+ sunscreen, it’s an excellent choice if you want an SPF that works really, really hard. Struggle to find an SPF that doesn’t irritate your sensitive skin? This ultragentle, biphasic dry-oil body sunscreen will be your saving grace. Formulated with skin-nourishing ingredients like chlorella maris – a potent antioxidant – the first phase offers UV protection, while the second phase helps detoxify sun-exposed skin through use of antioxidants. It’s a dry oil, so it absorbs super-quickly and doesn’t leave an oily residue – fab if you’re getting ready in a rush. SKIN REPUBLIC AGE-DEFYING RETINOL HAND MASK You probably already have a bathroom cabinet full of anti-ageing serums and creams dedicated to your face, but don’t forget to show your hands a little extra attention too. In addition to lathering up with hand cream and SPF, consider hand masks, which concentrate the best skin-loving ingredients on your digits, minus the mess. So much more than an at-home spa-like indulgence, these help target dryness, dark spots, freckles as well as loss of firmness and elasticity. YOU’RE NEVER

FULLY DRESSED WITHOUT A SMILE An interview with celebrity dentist DR NORMAN CAHI Want a gleaming smile? Then meet highly sought-after dentist, Dr Norman Cahi from Cahi Dental & Prosthodontic Practice. The Joburg-based dental practitioner works his magic from a bright and airy practice in the heart of Sandton, so it’s no surprise then that celebrities flock to him. Read on to catch his vision as you read about the celebrity dentist in the City of Gold.

01.

How did you get into the industry? I studied at the University of the Witwatersrand and qualified as a dentist in 1984. In 1993, I took my young family to live in London where I became interested in cosmetic dentistry and went on further courses. In 2000, I was one of the pioneers to bring teeth whitening to South Africa. To date, I’ve bleached thousands and thousands of peoples’ teeth and have fine-tuned my aesthetic and cosmetic dental procedures. 44 | w w w.s c en ein t h ec it y.c o.za | December/January 2 0 2 1

S C E N E I N T H E CIT Y

02.

Did you always want to be a dentist? And how did you end up becoming this highly sought after/celebrity dentist? I was always keen on something medical, but my parents influenced me to follow the dentist career path – much to my great satisfaction and happiness. Journalists started approaching me in 2001 for advice on dental bleaching as South Africa woke up to the new Botox of the millennium, which was cosmetic teeth bleaching. I was then invited to appear as a guest on Carte Blanche, 3Talk with Noeleen, kykNET and Good Morning SA. Soon after, VIPs and high-profile personalities began seeking my professional help.

03.

Tell us about the services you offer. Cahi Dental & Prosthodontic Practice offers an array of dental treatments, including basic oral hygiene, root canal treatments, kiddies’ dentistry, implants, tooth coloured fillings, active aligner therapy to straighten teeth and, of course, our specialty – smile makeovers.

04.

Do you have a favourite service? Definitely teeth bleaching! It’s the most sought-after service in the profession today and people all over the world willingly come in requesting this, so it’s a win-win for both me and my patients. I love to see the joy and smiles of delight afterwards – it gives me great satisfaction.

05.

Can you explain the difference between regular dentistry and aesthetic dentistry? Regular dentistry includes oral assessments, X-rays, fillings, extractions, dentures and so on. Aesthetic dentistry, on the other hand, is the art and science of creating a beautiful and symmetrical smile.

06.

What do you love most about your job? I love meeting people from all walks of life. My strong point is the ability to connect with my patients and strike up a rapport with them. This develops trust, which is the cornerstone of a successful patient -doctor relationship.

07.

What’s been your career highlight to date? Being invited to speak at the House of Commons on behalf of the Dental Wellness Trust (DWT), a charity foundation that brings free dental care to the impoverished children of South Africa. At present, the DWT teaches 13,000 kids a day how to brush their teeth and wash their hands.

S T Y L E & BE A UT Y

08.

Which celebrities have you worked on? Some standouts are Mark Pilgrim and most of the former Miss South Africa winners (including this year’s winner), which includes two Miss Universe winners and one runner up. Also, many top media personalities, fashion designers and top footballers.

09.

How does one maintain dental hygiene on a daily basis? The five golden rules for good dental health are: Brush twice a day, floss once a day, eat lots of fresh fruit and vegetables, avoid sugary, starchy foods as well as visit your dentist every six months.

10.

Let’s be honest – do home remedies really work for teeth whitening? No home remedy really bleaches your teeth. Only professionally supervised teeth bleaching procedures produce a safe, sustainable result that’s long-lasting and looks great.

11.

What is the most effective way to brush your teeth? With a medium to soft nylon bristle brush that’s is held at a 45-degree angle to the tooth surface and in round, small rotation – not up and down or back and front scrubbing which causes gum recession.

12. 13.

A dental hygiene myth you’d like to bust? That bad breath can’t be cured. Do you scan people’s teeth when you’re out and about? Yes! It’s quite funny, but I find myself focusing on people’s smiles all the time.

14.

New treatments in dental care that one must be aware of? Active aligners are the new buzz word causing a stir in the industry. They straighten teeth using clear, removable plates and are very popular amongst adults who refuse to go back to fixed braces.

15.

What can we expect for 2021? Aesthetic dentistry is only gaining momentum all the time. I mean, who doesn’t want white teeth? For many people, white teeth signify health, beauty, youth and vitality. DAY 1:

MAJEKA HOUSE Best for: Eating, drinking and sleeping amid antique furnishings and flamboyant patterns Perfect days in Cape Town consist of overeating, overdrinking, oversleeping, then walking it all off while exploring before you repeat the delicious cycle again. On the first day, we recommend checking into the tranquil haven that is Majeka House in Stellenbosch; a sleek, modern boutique hotel in prime wine country surrounded by stunning scenery of dramatic mountains and verdant valleys planted with vines. The original part of the hotel was the owner’s holiday house. The property has since been transformed into a small luxury hotel with luxe accommodation, creative cuisine, a spa with an indoor pool and beautiful gardens with outlandish cacti, rambling roses and bright blue furniture. In a leafy enclave in the midst of the Stellenbosch Wine Route, the hotel makes for a seductive escape with handcrafted furniture and quirky design details, evoking a neo-colonial look. The rooms are spacious and feature natural materials of wood and stone, bright nature-themed wall coverings, garden and mountain views as well as private terraces. Our favourite space in the hotel is the fashionable bar lounge filled with books, art, oriental rugs, custom furniture and some homey touches. Eclectic, theatrical, fun and

luxurious, it’s a lovely spot to have a pre-dinner drink before heading to Majeka Kitchen. The hotel’s small farm-to-fork fine-dining restaurant has a well-earned reputation, and everything about the stylish spot is bespoke – from the crockery to the staff uniforms. Expect a warm welcome, creative attention to detail and an optional two or three-course menu with plenty of dishes to savour, including lusciously creamy baby marrow risotto, flaky, tender pan-fried fish of the day in a lemon and garlic sauce served with sautéed spinach and mushrooms, and strawberry and vanilla anglaise soufflé that’s soft and fluffy on the inside. The next day, breakfast is served in the lush gardens, which will get you in the mood for a decadent morning meal. The three-tiered serving tray for the table is stocked with yoghurt, cereal, muesli, seasonal fruit, charcuterie, smoked salmon, cheese and home baked pastries and danishes. You wouldn’t be disappointed by blowing your carb allotment on the croissants here, but the American style pancakes off the à la carte menu – ethereally fluffy with butter-crisped edges served with blueberry compote – is the order to beat. 26 Houtkapper Street, Paradyskloof, Stellenbosch 021 880 1549 www.majekahouse.co.za

TOKARA WINE ESTATE Best for: A wonderful architectural statement and drinkable, food-friendly wines While the historic town of Stellenbosch is a short drive, there are more than 145 vineyards to visit in the area. Designer winery Tokara Wine Estate, on the top of Helshoogste pass, is the location of one of the Cape’s most innovative restaurants. At this trendy destination for wine, food and art lovers, start your afternoon with an olive oil tasting consisting of the estate’s four coldpressed extra-virgin olive oils, from mild to robust. You’ll also get to sample their preserved Kalamata olives and olive paste. After the tasting, the contemporary and cosmopolitan Tokara Restaurant is a must-visit for lunch with dropdead gorgeous views through floor-to-ceiling glass. Start your meal with a bottle of one of our favourite wines, the ultra-stylish Tokara MCC with delicate bubbles, flavours of toasted almonds and freshly buttered toast plus notes of lemon and lime preserve and crisp minerality. Or, the Tokara Director’s Reserve White 2017 with a zesty persistence, which is complex on the nose with attractive notes of ripe passion fruit and pink grapefruit all intermingled with hints of lemongrass and freshly baked brioche. The menu is South African with a hint of Europe and the friendly and knowledgeable staff will guide your choices according to appetite and preference. Dishes like the salt baked beetroot carpaccio with raspberry, fennel, toasted walnuts and celery or the beef tartare with turnip, radish, avocado, salsa verde and horseradish mayo are finesse without the fuss. On the other hand, the springbok loin with peach and apricot mebos, green beans, pomme anna and apricot and orange buchu jus is as complex and joyful as South Africa itself, as is the vegan smoked roasted carrot with rainbow carrots, gnocchi, black rice crisp and parsley and carrot jus. For dessert, the Spanish almond cake – simply heaven for almond fans with hibiscus and lemon posset and nougat ice cream – will certainly satisfy most. DAY 2:

EDITOR’S PICK: STEENBERG HOTEL & SPA Best for: Discreet glamour and splendid isolation in a Constantia Valley sweet spot From the entrance of Steenberg Vineyards, a road winds up between the prized vines surrounded by natural beauty – rugged mountains and tantalising glimpses of the sky. On arrival at the recently renovated hotel, the overwhelming impression is of generous space, immaculate lawns and mature trees that have been growing for decades, if not centuries. The air is fragrant with roses thanks to the well-established rose bushes. The Cape Dutch-style buildings are flamboyant, old-school glamour and the staff are waiting in the driveaway to welcome you. It won’t be easy to find rooms or villa-sized suites with sumptuous décor in such a brilliant location that’s as slickly managed, luxurious or private anywhere else in Cape Town. Located on the oldest original wine farm in Constantia, Steenberg Hotel stands out for its ideal location – halfway between the city and the beaches of the southern Peninsula, you could call it the best of both worlds. You also have access to the whole Steenberg private estate lifestyle, including wine tasting, a choice of restaurants, an 18-hole championship golf course, nature trails and biking routes. But what really sets this venerable hotel apart is its distinct sense of place, complete with a secluded swimming pool and pool lounge with facilities for early check-in or latestay guests plus a spa with fabulous QMS facials and Africology body treatments. It’s both a haven and inspiration, and unlike any other hotel we’ve encountered. The individually decorated rooms are vibrant, openplan spaces, incorporating timber floors, grey and soft blue tones, pink vanity design with gold finishes, natural materials, modern fabrics, contrasting textures and a clever curation of furnishings by South African designers. They also feature the latest mod-cons such as iPod docking stations and PC data and power outlets as well as Wi-Fi, fresh flowers from the garden and locally made Healing Earth bathroom amenities.

While no two rooms look exactly alike, there’s a fresh, contemporary theme, culminating a well-balanced, serene space. Our one-bedroom suite also had French doors that opened up onto a private terrace, which is probably the best place to watch the stars pop out after the sun has gone down. The three villa-like suites – which are best for big families and feeling right at home – have oodles of space and their own private pools. Even if you don’t overnight here, you’ll want to stay for a meal at one of the two excellent, reliable and consistent restaurants, both overseen by chef Kerry Kilpin. Pre- or post-wine tasting (the sparkling wines, sauvignon blanc and Nebbiolo hit the spot), we recommend a decadent breakfast or lunch at the cellardoor bistro, Bistro Sixteen82. In this sociable space, you’ll be tempted by a mix of classics and contemporary fare that offer fantastic value for money – think a pankocrusted cheese fritter, curried baby calamari, beef tataki, broccoli and spinach risotto, ethically sourced fish and braised lamb neck.

Enjoy the estate’s cool-climate wines or a glass of bubbly with fresh fare like Saldanha Bay oysters and the lightest tempura prawns imaginable, served with a peanut and coriander noodle salad, harissa mayo and chilli syrup. For mains, the roasted pork belly served with celeriac mash, pecan nut and green bean salsa and maple jus is a must-order – and don’t skimp on the sides; the hand-cut chips are a sensation. But Chef Kerry is also a dab hand at desserts, so save room for the lemon posset served with yoghurt and mango sorbet, berry coulis and white chocolate shortbread. Attentive staff who fulfil every request – whether spoken or otherwise – make for an absolutely flawless experience. Steenberg Estate, Steenberg Road, Tokai 021 713 2222 www.steenbergfarm.com

LA MOUETTE Best for: A luxurious dinner and fancy service … with a manageable price tag Forget all about difficult-dish decision-making – La Mouette’s tasting menus give you the chance to wine and dine on the very best that recently appointed culinary advisor chef Neill Anthony has to offer at a range of different price points. It’s all about finely prepared French-inspired cuisine with seasonal South African influences and foraged indigenous ingredients. The opulent-looking restaurant’s interiors – crisp white linen, signature blue water glasses and dining rooms with fireplaces – and the mountain views are a bonus. Choose between a two (R350), three (R450) and fivecourse (R350) tasting menu. Chef Neill’s obsession with local ingredients, techniques and flavours finds expression in the five-course tasting menu, in which each plate offers a bite-sized course that makes the most of seasonal food. It’s fine dining, condensed. For an additional R300, the elegant wine pairing option is hard to refuse and each glass chimes with the flavours of the plate without overwhelming your senses (or your sobriety). The five-course tasting menu starts with snacks – chicken liver parfait cornetto and deepfried truffle mac and cheese with grain mustard – followed by your choice of tuna tartare or fresh asparagus. The former is a colourful, zingy blast of summer in food form; the seaside tang of tuna combined with the acid kick of fennel mousse, radish salad and tom yum vinaigrette.

And, as ever, his veg-centric fettuccine dish with rocket pesto and pecorino is as complex as its meaty counterparts. VICTORIA & ALFRED HOTEL Best for: Plush eclectic décor, an unparalleled vantage point and unbelievable value for money What you can see from the entrance of the Victoria & Alfred Hotel in the V&A Waterfront, part of the Newmark Hotels, Reserves, Lodges & Residences portfolio, doesn’t prepare you for what’s tucked neatly into the building. Offering possibly the best value in the city, this hotel holds many trump cards, not least its historic location and old-school vibe. However, the superlative views of Table Mountain always end up stealing the show. From the road, you enter a starkly modern architectural space with a handsome secretarial desk that opens out into the smart, spacious indoor-outdoor Ginja restaurant with a harbour view. There’s a lot of hotel packed between mountain and sea, including a spa, gym and swimming pool. About a third of hotel’s rooms, which are in ship-shape condition, are loftlike spaces, but they all overlook either the waterfront or a nearby piazza. The rooms are decked out with every home comfort imaginable – think a swivel TV, king size bed, writing desk, air-conditioning, 300 thread count bedding and more. In this location with five-star service and design interiors, you can’t go wrong. The whitewashed brick mountain-facing rooms are generously sized and elegantly decorated with crisp white bed linens, jewel-toned velvet armchairs and commissioned art. White subway tiles and topaz marble jazz up the generously sized bathrooms. The post-sunset vista from your window has to be one of the best views of the waterfront found anywhere on earth. Breakfast is served downstairs in the restaurant or in your room. With hot specials ranging from fluffy Spanish omelettes to eggs Benedict or Florentine, it delivers on the property’s unspoken principle: It’s like your home, only way better.

HARBOUR HOUSE - V&A WATERFRONT Best for: Tucking into treats from the sea and a glass of fizz With its postcard-worthy location and crowded tables, Harbour House - V&A Waterfront is one of the best restaurants for eating the ocean’s gifts and the ultimate spot for a very Cape Town long lunch. It gives you the feeling every restaurant should leave you with – utter refreshment, and those five-star views out over the ocean and harbour are a big part of it. Because of its positioning and extensive glass walls, it feels as if you’re almost floating on the harbour, surrounded as you are by water. The food is best described as aspirationally fresh, local and elegant fare. For starters, the kitchen delivers delights ranging from a simple snack of fried calamari with rocket, spring onion, green olives and anchovy and tartar sauce to a seafood stack with salmon tartare, tempura prawns, caviar, avocado mousse, tomato, cucumber and sweet chilli sauce. We recommend ordering the oysters with lemon granita and the salmon roses that never disappoint (the ratio of sushi ingredients is near perfect), even if it’s just an excuse to order more wine. Because, fun lovers, the wine list is brilliant and really thoughtfully put together. If you’re here to luxuriate a little and can lock down a table on the upstairs deck, you’ll want to spend some time with it while you soak up some summer goodness. Served up for mains are signature seafood dishes alongside killer cocktails featuring a sublimely seasonal mix of ingredients. Order the grilled crayfish done in a lemon butter to keep the meat, moist served with a roasted garlic aioli that adds a flavour punch, or the luxuriously rich, creamy seafood pasta with handmade pappardelle and an abundance of calamari, mussels, prawns and line fish in a Parmesan sauce. Each dish is a taste explosion that leaves you wanting more. On a nonseafood note, both the rib eye and pork belly are to die for, as is the salad with heirloom tomatoes, feta, pickled onions, black olives, basil aioli, herb croutons and honey lemon emulsion. Don’t miss the eton mess for dessert; a pretty-as-a-picture plate of raspberry sorbet, wild strawberry meringue, white chocolate mousse, almonds and macerated strawberries. Silky-smooth service only adds to the appeal. Quay Four, Dock Road, V&A Waterfront, Cape Town 021 418 4744 www.harbourhouse.co.za

DAY 4:

THE PRESIDENT HOTEL Best for: A grand yet unpretentious place to stay in a fashionable neighbourhood The President Hotel in Bantry Bay is a feel-good hotel where most of the staff have been around for years and many guests are regulars, which comes as no surprise as the place is astonishingly good value. With mesmerising views and an atmosphere worth forfeiting a day out – or at least cutting the day’s sightseeing short – it’s one of the most stylish and sun-soaked hotels to lurk in when visiting Cape Town. Book at the right time and it’s a bargain! Nestled beneath the majestic Lion’s Head and just a two-minute walk from its pedestrian pleasures, the hotel offers sublime ocean views, easy pedestrian access, excellent food and authentic, warm service. In keeping with the splendid surroundings, the rooms are decorated in a beach-bling palette of blue, silver, grey and white, whether facing the sea or the mountains behind. If you can, book a One-Bedroom Apartment with an open-plan kitchenette, spacious lounge and dining area, separate bedroom and en-suite bathroom, balcony and front-row views of the glittering water.

Aside from the beautifully appointed rooms, there are plenty of comfortable public areas to unwind in, including The Islands Restaurant, The Deck Bar & Terrace, Botany Café, Senate Bar and a lovely infinity pool. Lunch alone makes a trip to this chic hotel worthwhile – it’s no wonder the hotel has such a loyal following. You could stay for a week and still not try everything: Artisanal wood-fired pizzas with gourmet toppings, a seafood platter in a lemon butter sauce, tandoori Norwegian salmon, Atlantic line fish, a beef burger, basil pesto caprese pasta and a steamed bun piled high with sesame pulled chicken, carrot salad and miso aioli are among the choices. It’s hard to go wrong, but definitely don’t miss the baked rhubarb cheesecake served with ginger crumble, ginger candy and strawberry granita. If you’re not in the mood for somewhere so sceney, the hotel can arrange for their acclaimed dishes to be delivered to your room.

The laidback bar is one of the best places in the city to toast to the setting sun. Tables spill out past the swimming pool, where the hotel has its own sunbeds and umbrellas. Settle in for cocktails like the Presidential Piña Colada, Lion’s Head Mojito or Mother City Margarita, or grab a ride into town if you feel like dancing till late. The only caveat: The longer you stare at the ocean, the less you’ll feel like venturing out. At The Islands Restaurant, there’s a seasonal dinner menu for those who don’t feel like going out (with vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free options), but a plethora of excellent restaurants just a few minutes away. 4 Alexander Road, Bantry Bay 021 434 8111 www.presidenthotel.co.za

LA COLOMBE RESTAURANT Best for: A truly unforgettable culinary experience featuring Constantia’s finest wines Perched up on Constantia Nek on a working wine farm, the pressure to secure a table is the only unpleasant aspect of what is otherwise the best fine dining experience in the city. A white-table-clothed ode to modern fine-dining, at the multi-award winning La Colombe Restaurant you’ll find passionate eaters excited about the famed Tuna ‘La Colombe’ and a bevy of Instagram-loving locals and tourists, all at the ready with their cameras. The food is generally inspired by nature; it’s a world filled with imaginative flavours and textures as well as top-notch service and grape pairings. We highly recommend coming in the day for the whimsical 11-course chef’s lunch menu (R895 plus an additional R800 for the optional beverage flight) for a sense of dining in the treetops from the treehouse-style restaurant, which reflects its garden and forest-inspired themes. You’ll start with snacks consisting of game fish with burnt lime and lamb roti followed by a decadent bread course with sweet potato, wagyu drippings and bone marrow butter. Thereafter, it’s innovative course after course, such as the mussels and curry in a burnt passion fruit shell and the kerala style quail with prawn and coriander. You’ll ooh at the unexpectedness of the signature Tuna ‘La Colombe’ and the mandarin and kalamansi palate cleanser (no spoilers). It’s dishes like these that explain the restaurant’s status as a table to book well in advance – especially in summer. No palate is left wanting as the elegantly presented next few dishes cater for a variety of tastes, with a range of specialties from line fish with lemongrass and coconut to heavenly petit poussin with wild mushroom and truffle jus gras. The well-choreographed tasting menu ends with your choice of cheeses from ‘the cheese chest’ with smoked pear and rooibos, a strawberry, cashew and rose dessert and finally garden treats including coconut and tonka macaroons. With comfortable yet classy indoor seating and views of the vineyards along with crisp linen, earthy wood and well considered crockery and cutlery, there’s no joy like being immersed in nature in this mountaintop dining room. A place where you’re truly able to relax, to escape and to dream, it’s one of the very best restaurants to bookmark now for your next Cape Town trip.

TAKE A WALK

ON THE WILD SIDE Connect with the great outdoors at Mabula Game Lodge

If you’ve been fuelling your wanderlust with plans for post-isolation travel while you’ve been stuck at home this year, there’s never been a better reason to make your next adventure a safari at Mabula Game Lodge. Distinctly African in style, the accommodation is colourful, contemporary and nature-noisy, the food and drink is way beyond typical safari-carnivorism and the staff are seemingly effortless, but passionate and utterly brilliant. 64 | w w w.s c en ein t h ec it y.c o.za | December/January 2 0 2 1

or those who love wild places, there’s nothing comparable to seeing elephants wandering through camp, lions napping in the dust of a dry riverbed at midday or hyenas sniffing at the tyres of your safari vehicle, unbothered by your camera clicking furiously. Recently refurbished and now one of South Africa’s most eclectic game hotels, Mabula Game Lodge has struck the right chord between design hotel and safari ground zero. But for all its smart details, Mabula Game Lodge is still a classic safari camp. Located just two-and-a-half hours’ drive from Joburg in the Waterberg region of Limpopo against the backdrop of the lush green Waterberg Mountains, the lodge boasts seriously Instagrammable rooms and even better views outside. The overhaul of the interiors is a delight: The suite feels more like a chic, serviced house than a standard hotel that comes complete with air-conditioning, a flat-screen TV as well as tea and coffee-making facilities. With a mix of antique and new furnishings, the interiors are not your usual fare – instead, thatch roof accommodation contrasts against luxury finishings, with soft neutral bushveld colours throughout and massive windows bringing the African wildlife indoors. It’s innovative and dramatic. The space allows for plenty of privacy for its guests, but a communal pool and outdoor seating areas provides time for guests to mingle – and maybe spot a warthog. Offering day and night game safaris, tours leave the lodge twice daily (early morning and just before dusk) and head to Mabula Private Game Reserve, which allows for all types of African animal watching.

The tours have a high success rate – and trust us when we say that you’ll leave completely satisfied! Training your eye to distinguish a hippo track from an elephant footprint or to spot a leopard tail hanging from a distant tree is a transformative experience that gives you a connection with the natural world. In the saffron-tinted dawn light across the savannah, you’ll see a sleekly powerful lioness yawning extravagantly before picking up one of her cubs. An hour later, you’re drinking hot chocolate spiked with Amarula liqueur as a herd of elephants amble past on the other side of the watering hole. It’s romantic and adventurous all at the same time, allowing guests to indulge whilst exploring. Back at your suite, soak up the daytime safari noises and incessant chatter of happy birds while you enjoy a bubble bath. Add a glass of bubbly and you’ve got yourself a holiday! Sundowners of G&Ts, nuts and biltong cap off the day on the evening safari, but don’t fill up on snacks as the lodge has fantastic dining facilities. Each evening meal is an unforgettable experience – one night you can find yourself dining by candlelight and dancing beneath the stars at a wilderness-themed bush dinner the next. The food is superb and the whole vibe is classic ‘Old Africa’ – think chicken kebabs, lamb pie, warthog potjie, impala casserole or the best malva pudding with a wonderful South African shiraz. The serenity is broken only by the bittersweet realisation that this might be about as good as life gets. 0 11 516 4367 www.mabula.com 66 | w w w.s c en ein t h ec it y.c o.za | December/January 2 0 2 1
