What’s

HOT

Against all odds, new restaurants are still opening … and need your support! Despite the ups and downs of the City of Gold’s dining regulations, Joburg is still home to one of the most exciting restaurant scenes in the country. It’s a tough time for restaurants and bars, but if the last year has taught us anything, it’s that local establishments are resilient and resourceful. Read on for our new favourites to support while you take a muchneeded night off from your kitchen, as well as a handful of notable new food and drink launches.

NEW RESTAURANTS EDITOR’S PICK: THE STATION PARKHURST Welcome to the golden age of bar food, when you’re just as likely to go to The Station - Parkhurst for a great meal as you are a great drink. A haven for pub purists with a red telephone box, ‘Mind the Gap’ signage, expansive station maps and London Underground elements in every corner of the space, this little slice of London in Parkhurst focuses just as much on food as booze and is raising the standard for bar food across Joburg. The restaurant and bar is constantly hopping, and it’s not just for the gin and tonic specials or the glorious patio from which you can take in the London vibe. Pub fare like chicken wings, prego and steak rolls, schwarmas, nachos, burritos and quesadillas dominate the menu, but in

our opinion it’s the tapas that justify a visit. The Camden Chicken Strips are a superior product – panko crumbed chicken strips are fried until golden brown and extra crisp, served with a honey mustard or green peppercorn dipping sauce. We also recommend the gooey, melty Mayfair Mozzarella Sticks and the Buckingham Bacon Poppers with the melting goodness of cream cheese, cheddar, mozzarella and chorizo oozing from the inside. Don’t overlook the main meals though, as the London Eye Hot Beef Pan with beef cubes served in a peri peri sauce and The Tube Calamari grilled in olive oil and lemon butter are both brilliant combinations. When your tummy is rumbling for a comforting dish, order the London Fish & Chips – think golden batter, succulent fish and chips that are crunchy on the outside and like mashed potatoes within. The bar, which boasts a selection of more than 150 local and international craft gins to explore, is dedicated to serving whopping gin and tonics complete with garnishes we’d describe as gin salad. From grapefruit and cucumber to mint, basil, thyme, star anise, cherries and juniper berries, it may not count towards your 10 a day, but it’ll have you feeling a bit of alright in no time! EMBARC RESTAURANT Embarc Restaurant is a slice of the sweet life on the corner of 4th and 13th on the Parkhurst strip. Here, chefpartners Darren O’Donovan, Lisa de Beer and Mitchel Du Plessis – whose combined resumes include Aurum Restaurant, Est Est Alea and Cube Tasting Kitchen – wow diners with an assortment of savoury and sweet small plates. Chic hardly begins to describe the understated space that captures the spirit of an upscale, chef-driven taperia. Most of the small plates are memorable – from the silky, milky and wonderful locally produced burrata with tomato, basil and strawberry to the wafer-thin ‘beef and beer’ carpaccio with beer reduction, yeasted mayo and popped barley – while many of the

desserts are downright extraordinary, such as the white chocolate that’s balanced out by the floral taste of lavender along with shortbread, tonka bean and honeycomb. And, rare is the order that doesn’t include one of the city’s most lauded risottos – a creamy, velvety showcase of Parmigiano-Reggiano, onion, truffle and pine nuts. Embarc Restaurant is also home to flawless seared salmon, pork belly, duck breast and coal-fired lamb, perfectly prepped steaks, vegan options that are just as thoughtful as their meaty counterparts and a smattering of eclectic wines to keep the mood social and festive. EDITOR’S PICK: THE NEW LA PETITE COLOMBE With its whitewashed walls, tree-lined walkways, colourful bushes and sculpture-filled grounds, La Petite Colombe’s new home at the picture-perfect Leeu Estates is right at home in the historic town of Franschhoek, known for its Cape Dutch architecture. The interiors of the restaurant’s glass-windowed dining room surrounded by natural light balance out this old-world vibe – think a subtle and neutral colour palette of creams and beiges, hand-painted ceramics and dove feather fabric that reminds us of the restaurant’s heritage and name. More importantly, with a fanciful dose of cosmopolitan global influences, the dining experience is unlike anything else in the Winelands. If you can, spring for the elegant 11-course Chef’s Experience tasting menu with wine pairings, in which head chef John Norris-Rogers is unafraid to push the envelope. It will set you back a pretty penny, but for foodies looking for an elusive mix of haute cuisine and local ingredients, the experience is nothing short of sublime – c’est superbe. Dishes will be familiar to fine-dining gazers, but there are modern touches and luxurious ingredients, too. There’s the snack course with beautiful foliage-inspired presentation served in the lounge area, followed by a mesmerising lavender-scented cloud of honey brioche with duck liver and rhubarb. Then there’s the dry-aged duck with prawn, szechuan, peanut and hoisin; an edible masterpiece that leads the way for larger dishes like the confit salmon with bacon sambal, asparagus and quail egg and the Karoo lamb with harissa, salsa verde and chickpea. The well-orchestrated ride, which plays with textures and temperatures while remaining grounded in flawless execution, ends with the famous sweet trolley of next-level desserts. Furthermore, the service is familiar and remains superb, with staff seamlessly ushering in each course, and there’s a sun-kissed patio terrace for al fresco dining in the warmer months. Showcasing a mastery of ingredients and presentation, this is a truly special restaurant that everyone should aspire to dine in. BEYOND AT BUITENVERWACHTING In a converted thatched building set on the mountain slopes of the historic Buitenverwachting, worldrenowned chef Peter Tempelhoff – who has roots to super-chic Cape Town restaurants FYN and Greenhouse – draws culinary influences from South African cuisine. The light-filled beyond is the latest opening in the Constantia Valley with design elements that borrow from natural textures, and it’s already a smash hit. The menu here is an essentials-only à la carte selection – including lobster tempura with homemade Japanese mayo, cold oysters, Durban prawn with tandoori cauliflower steak, African ancient grain risotto and a Madagascan chocolate and coffee roll – but everything here is so good you won’t need many more options. Some dishes are deeply traditional, but some throw unexpected yet decadent flavours into the mix, like the truffle-filled burrata. The free-range ostrich tataki with pickle gel and drizzled with heavenly horseradish mayonnaise and spicy chirizu sauce is a veritable tongue pleaser, while the sustainable line fish with Saldanha Bay mussel cream, coastal plants and an elegant dusting of saffron is local fish in its purest form. Make sure you ask about the secret, off-menu tasting menu that’s also available. Buitenverwachting, 37 Klein Constantia Road, Constantia 021 794 0306 www.beyondrestaurant.co.za

SHARING PLATES AT THE WERF RESTAURANT The Werf Restaurant, the provenance-steeped restaurant located on the picturesque Boschendal Wine Estate, is real-deal farm-to-table fare – and a visit comes complete with stunning views of the imposing mountains. Using organic produce sourced directly from its food garden and ingredients from nearby farms, executive chef Allistaire Lawrence creates sharing plates depending on what’s bountiful that day. The new dining concept dabbles in fresh produce – from melty deep-fried camembert with figs, seed crackers, pecan nuts and rocket oil to a stone fruit salad that comes dressed with burrata, prosciutto and French dressing – and the food is plentiful. Other highlights include delicious, tender and juicy thick-cut marinated Angus sirloin with charred onion purée, baby onions and beef jus as well as a refreshing ceviche treat of yellowtail, kimchi, yoghurt, carrot and ginger dressing and crispy sago. For dessert, choices like a wonderfully smooth, creamy and zesty lemon tart with raspberry sorbet and peppermint shortbread will end a perfect lunch in the shade of the oak trees. A decadent meal is best paired with Boschendal’s sauvignon blancs, chardonnays and pinot noirs, or one of the creative ‘Winetails’ that may look like an Italian aperitivo, but it won’t taste like one. CLASSIC FLAMMKUCHEN by the Waibel family, owners of Constantia Glen

Wine pairing suggestion: Constantia Glen Sauvignon Blanc – a wine of freshness, impeccable balance and great length, combining tropical fruit flavours with a well-integrated minerality. Ingredients: For the dough 500g white bread flour 7g salt 320ml warm water A little olive oil For the topping 12 strips of bacon, cut into small squares or cubes 2 onions, finely sliced into rings 250g crème fraîche or sour cream 230g natural Greek yoghurt 1 teaspoon nutmeg ¾ salt 5 leeks, chopped Freshly ground black pepper Fresh thyme (optional)

Method: Combine all dough recipe ingredients in a large bowl to form a rough dough. Knead the dough for 10 minutes until you have a smooth, elastic, stretchy and velvety dough. Place the dough back into your bowl and cover with a lid. Leave to rest for two to four hours at room temperature (or overnight in the fridge). Preheat the oven and a baking tray to 250°C (the highest temperature possible) 30 minutes before the bake. If you have a pizza stone, preheat the oven and the pizza stone one hour before. Divide the dough into four parts (eight parts for smaller sized Flammkuchen). Shape each part into a ball and leave to rest for 10 minutes. Combine the crème fraîche and yoghurt in a small bowl. Add the nutmeg, salt and pepper and mix well. Roll out the dough pieces (2mm to 3mm) and transfer to baking sheets. Leave to rest for 15 minutes. Fry the bacon strips briefly until almost cooked, don’t let them get crispy. Fry the onion rings and leeks in the same pan until slightly browned. If you are making all four Flammkuchen but baking only one at a time, don’t add the topping to all of them at once. Evenly and generously spread the cream mixture onto the base, leave a small border around the edge (this will turn golden-brown and crispy). Scatter the onion rings and bacon on top and sprinkle with thyme. Bake for about 12 minutes or until the edges are nicely browned and the bottom is crisp. Serve immediately.

PRAWN PASTA WITH TOMATOES, GARLIC & CREAM By food blogger, food stylist and photographer Sam Linsell

Wine pairing suggestion: Tokara Sauvignon Blanc, vibrant with an abundance of Cape gooseberries, green apples and passion fruit – the perfect summertime companion for warmweather sipping and alfresco dining. Ingredients: 250g linguine or spaghetti 1 tablespoon olive oil 1 tablespoon butter 4 anchovy fillets, chopped 300g prawn meat (after skinned, deveined and heads removed) 250g baby tomatoes, halved 3 cloves garlic, crushed ½ red chilli, finely chopped or ½ teaspoon dried chilli flakes 6 sundried tomatoes in olive oil vinaigrette, blitzed in a small food processor or bashed up to a paste in a pestle and mortar ½ cup Tokara Sauvignon Blanc 1 tablespoon baby capers or chopped capers (optional) ⅓ to ½ cup cream 2 tablespoon parsley, finely chopped Small handful of wild rocket leaves Zest of half a lemon Salt and pepper

22 | w w w.s c en ein t h ec it y.c o.za | February/March 2 0 2 1

Method: Get a large pot of salted water on the boil and cook your pasta according to the pack instructions and until al dente. Get the sauce going about five minutes into cooking the pasta. Heat a large non-stick frying and add the butter and olive oil. Once bubbling, add the anchovies and prawns and toss about until the prawns just start turning pink. Add the garlic and chilli and cook for about 30 seconds and until fragrant. Add the wine to deglaze the pan and allow most of the liquid to cook off. Then add the tomatoes, sundried tomatoes and cook for about two to three minutes. Add the cream and capers and allow this to thicken slightly. Drain the pasta and reserve some of the cooking liquid. Tip the pasta into the pan to finish off cooking with the sauce. Add some of the cooking liquid to loosen the pasta and toss in the chopped parsley, wild rocket and grated lemon zest. Season with salt and pepper and serve immediately in large bowls.

CLASSIC FRENCH MILLE-FEUILLE by trained chef, food stylist and photographer Bianca Davies

Wine pairing suggestion: Krone Vintage Rosé Cuvée Brut 2018, in which a floral bouquet of rosewater meets the sweet-sour-salty scent of coastal sour figs. Fresh red fruits – pomegranates, cranberries – take centre stage on the full, soft palate, unfolding into candied orange and white-fleshed nectarine. Ingredients: 500ml full cream milk 5 extra-large free-range egg yolks 125g sugar 30g cornstarch 30g flour 1 vanilla pod or 1 tablespoon vanilla paste or extract with seeds 350g raspberries 2 250g all butter puff pastry sheets ¼ cup pistachios, roughly chopped Icing sugar for dusting Method: If using a vanilla pod, slice the vanilla pod lengthways and using the back of the knife, slide it down the length of the exposed pod to scrape out the seeds. Add both the pod and the seeds to the milk. In a large saucepan, add the milk, roughly a third of the sugar and vanilla. Heat to a simmer. While the milk is heating, whisk the egg yolks with the remaining sugar in a large bowl until pale and fluffy. Then add the cornstarch and flour. Whisk well to combine.

Once the milk has come to a simmer, remove the vanilla pod if using. Pour a third of the hot milk over the egg mixture in a very slow stream and whisk vigorously until smooth and thoroughly combined. Pour the egg and milk mixture back into the saucepan with the remaining hot milk and continue to whisk over a medium heat. Cook, whisking constantly, until mixture thickens, being careful not to let it burn on the bottom of the pan. Once the pastry cream starts to bubble, cook for another two minutes, then remove from the heat. Pour pastry cream into a shallow dish and place a layer of plastic wrap directly on the surface of the pastry cream to prevent a skin forming. Leave to cool slightly and then refrigerate until cold. Make the puff pastry layers: Preheat oven to 220°C and line two baking trays with baking paper. Cut squares of pastry in half to form three identical rectangles out of your pastry and place on baking trays. Save the fourth piece for something else like cheese straws or cinnamon sugar twists.

Place another piece of baking paper on top of each tray of pastry rectangles. Place another baking tray on top of the parchment – this helps weigh the pastry down during baking, so it doesn’t puff up too much. Bake the pastry layers for 15 minutes, then remove the top baking sheet and baking paper and bake for four to five minutes more, until they are deeply golden brown. If the underside isn’t crisp, flip them over and bake until both sides are golden and cooked through. Let cool completely. Assemble the mille-feuille just before serving. Whisk the cold pastry cream until smooth again. Add a dot of pastry cream to the serving plateor board to act as ‘glue’ and put a piece of pastry on top. Generously spread a layer of pastry cream over the pastry and add a layer of raspberries. Scatter with a few pistachios and repeat the stages until you have a threelayered showstopper of a dessert. Finish it off with a generous dusting of icing sugar. Serve immediately.

10ml baking powder 2 teaspoons cinnamon Extra cinnamon to sprinkle between layers Method: For the filling Heat the litre of milk, butter and sugar in the microwave for three minutes until the sugar has dissolved. Add the hot milk, fold in until it forms a silky-smooth mixture. Divide the mixture between the two cake tins. Bake for 30 minutes. Let them cool for 10 minutes before removing from the tins. LEMON POSSET

by executive chef Kerry Kilpin of Tryn and Bistro Sixteen82 at Steenberg Vineyards Wine pairing suggestion: Steenberg 1682 Chardonnay Cap Classique, which exudes freshness and pure fruit on the nose and vibrant notes of Granny Smith apple, candied lemon rind and white peach. Ingredients: 300ml double cream 75g castor sugar 1-2 lemons, juiced Method: Pour the cream and sugar into a pot. Slowly bring to the boil, stirring continuously to dissolve the sugar. Once it comes to the boil, let the cream bubble for a further three minutes, stirring all the time. Remove from the heat and start to add the lemon juice. The mixture should start to thicken slightly. Taste the mixture and add enough lemon juice that it tastes tart. The posset should taste sweet, tangy and tart. Allow mixture to cool for about five minutes. Pour into individual glasses and place in the fridge overnight to set. Serve the dessert with fresh berries and fruit sorbet.

EDITOR’S PICK: THE VIEW BY 27PINKX Here’s to starting 2021 with a calm, clear head and skin to match! Pampering is of prime importance at The View by 27Pinkx, a cosmopolitan hideaway with exotic charm that offers massages, body treatments, facials, slimming treatments, waxing as well as manicures and pedicures. A fabulous spa is all about relaxation, and this posh spot within the Radisson Blu Hotel Sandton sets the tone as you show up for your appointment. Every detail is ultra-luxe, and the treatments are similarly next level – think a ginger and lavender poultice massage, African body cleansing ceremony and honey enzyme facial. A green-juice detox is one thing, but if you’re looking for a truly deep cleanse, the detoxifying mud wrap might be just the thing. The one-hour ritual begins with a body polishing scrub. The body is then wrapped in a paste of green and kaolin clay, fennel, ginger and vetiver to stimulate the toxin elimination process, restore energy levels and improve circulation. This is followed by a warming herbal infusion massage to cap it off. Once your body has been pummeled into smooth submission, treat your face to the iS Clinical Fire & Ice Facial, which resurfaces the skin and amps up radiance with precise combinations of two treatment masks complemented by serums and creams, with oh-so-heavenly aromas of warm cinnamon spice and cool peppermint. Best of all? There’s no downtime. While you’re there, don’t miss the salt room – the secret to breathing easier and the perfect place to disconnect after enjoying the spa’s treatments. Not only does it promote relaxation, calmness and better sleep, it’s also hailed for clearing out passageways, strengthening the immune system and boosting the metabolism. 10th floor, Radisson Blu Hotel Sandton, corner of Rivonia Road & Daisy Street, Sandton 010 226 9120 www.27pinkx.co.za

BRONZ’D Effortless convenience is the top perk of this upmarket spray tan studio inside Ginger hair salon, which offers in-studio tanning sessions or at-home visits. The founder, Bronwyn, was inspired to open her own studio after living in California and being surrounded by beautiful people who make health and beauty a top priority. She’s kind and attentive, taking the time to walk you through the process to ensure you get the perfect colour based on your skin tone and preferences. Even the pickiest spray-tan customers will be impressed by their experience: First off, the vegan, organic and cruelty-free Norvell 1 Hour Rapid solution is remarkable. It develops in just one to three hours, is minimally scented with a raspberry almond fragrance and dries almost instantly, leaving no sticky residue and allowing you to go about the rest of your day without feeling like a sticky mess. In addition, the process is incredibly quick, the results last for at least a week and at R350 for a rapid tan, the price is right. The studio also offers an expertly curated array of skincare products and swimwear to bring your glow to the next level – you can’t miss The Fox Tan tanning accelerators and Motherkind pure hydrolysed collagen. Or, tap into the range of power-packed sk.in serums, formulated by well-respected medical aesthetics practitioner, Dr Alek Nikolic. Hard-working beauty

heroes

Our edit of the best products to help you multitask at home Just because you’re one of those people who spend your time at home working out, meditating and cooking to fill the hours doesn’t mean your beauty routine has to suffer. As 13-step routines have begun to feel superfluous in the days of lockdown, many of us have whittled down our regimes to just a handful of hard-working products. Ahead, our editor’s favourite beauty products to use while you multitask – from a do-it-all cleanser to a sheet mask that almost beats a trip to the facialist. Spending time alone never looked so good!

EDITOR’S PICK: ENVIRON FOCUS CARE COMFORT+ ANTI-POLLUTION SPRITZ AND MASQUE What it is: Anti-pollution skincare products that you should be using now Why we love it: There’s plenty of research out there that links environmental pollutants – such as UV rays, infrared radiation, temperature extremes, stress and blue light from your computer or phone screen – to a whole host of skin issues, from sensitivity and pigmentation to premature ageing and a dull, sallow complexion. Thankfully, Environ has launched two new products to protect your skin from pollution: The Anti-Pollution Spritz with a myriad of skin-boosting benefits and the Anti-Pollution-Mask that sweeps away every last particle. Famed for its rejuvenating skincare products and facials, this brand knows a thing or two about keeping skin protected from the elements. The invisible and breathable travel-friendly mist is a great way to top up your protection throughout the day. The spray is super-fine, so you can spritz it over makeup without disturbing your foundation, and it will shield skin from pollution while also imparting a dewy radiance (that’ll be the high potency of antioxidants). The no-nonsense masque is one of the brand’s most advanced products yet – and one of the most potent protectors you’ll find on our shores. The lightweight formula is packed with Japanese charcoal that works to absorb pollutant impurities on every level, as well as special botanicals that normalise and hydrate both the skin surface and deeper layers. Because dull, dehydrated skin isn’t a good look! R520 and R515 respectively from Sorbet salons

NEOSTRATA ULTRA BRIGHTENING CLEANSER What it is: A glow-giving cleanser that works double time to keep skin dewy Why we love it: NeoStrata is one of our personal favourite skincare brands. Its products, like this brightening cleanser full of a non-acid amino that gently exfoliates, are the reason. Not only does it slough away dirt, makeup or pollution that your skin has accumulated throughout the day, it also levels your skin tone and gives you that lit-from-within radiance that we like to refer to as ‘the glow factor’. Now that we’re coming to the end of a sun-drenched summer, we find this product to be especially necessary. Plus, it’s soap, fragrance and paraben-free, which is a major win in our book! We use it in the morning and at night on wet skin after an oil cleanser or micellar water to remove makeup. R575 from www.dermastore.co.za

LAMELLE CORRECTIVES SERUMS What it is: Wonder serums for your most radiant complexion ever Why we love it: While indoors, we find that we’re still craving a radiance boost. Enter the Lamelle Correctives HA +, Vita-C Lipid and Brighter Serums. These supercharged formulas are truly modern-day miracle workers: The HA + Serum, which has four skin-compatible types of hyaluronic acid, secretly holds the key to smooth, flawless and hydrated skin. If you want a hyaluronic acid serum that’s free from questionable ingredients – think essential oils and drying alcohols – this is where it’s at! This thirst-quenching serum is light on the ingredients list, but weighty in the hydration department. Applied in the morning on clean, dry skin, the Vita-C Lipid Serum prevents free-radical damage from things like UV rays and pollution to keep your skin healthy and glowing. It also inhibits the production of excess melanin, which, in turn, helps prevent and fade dark spots, acne scars and melasma. And, thanks to its ability to boost collagen, it smooths fine lines and wrinkles over time, too. Crazy, right? Packed with a unique combination of melanin-inhibiting ingredients coupled with potent antioxidants, the Brighter Serum helps fade pigmentation and increase luminosity. With ferulic acid as one of its main ingredients, this complexion-correcting serum will tackle dull lacklustre skin types. It’s a little more expensive, but as one of the best brightening serums in the business, it’s worth every single penny. Trust us. R680, R849 and R879 respectively from www.dermastore.co.za

FILORGA LIFT-MASK What it is: A snugly fitting sheet mask that doesn’t slide Why we love it: In our books, the best sheet masks need to do two things: Be loaded with spa-like appeal and improve our skin while we’re parked in front of our laptop. This biocellulose mask is generously soaked in serum and provides a visible lifting and firming effect. Delivering a potent dose of active ingredients used in injectables – think collagen, hyaluronic acid and cellular factors – it’s a fabulous way to treat your skin while you’re working from home. When our skin needs a pick-me-up between emails and Zoom calls, we apply the mask on freshly cleansed skin with a serum underneath and then leave it on for 15 minutes. Our skin always looks plumper and dewier after using it. R155 from www.skinmiles.com and www.absoluteskin.co.za

ELIZABETH ARDEN HYALURONIC ACID CERAMIDE CAPSULES HYDRA-PLUMPING SERUM What it is: Ampoules of supercharged serum divvied out into daily doses Why we love it: Elizabeth Arden’s new single-serve skincare capsules deserve a permanent spot on your vanity, especially while you’re working from home. Infused with hyaluronic acid and ceramides, each pea-sized biodegradable pod promises to moisturise, target wrinkles and retexturise skin. The ampoules seep into skin seamlessly and practically immediately, leaving no kind of residue from too many products. After a few regular uses, our skin felt smoother and we noticed fewer dry patches. We recommend using one ampoule both morning and evening for an extended at-home spa treatment. They’re powerful alone, but transformative when layered with the Advanced Ceramide Capsules on top. R1,095 for 60 pieces from Woolworths, Edgars and Foschini

OLGANI CHARCOAL & COCOA NATURAL TOOTHPOWDER What it is: Your new BFF tooth powder that will make your teeth pearly white Why we love it: Attention all coffee and wine lovers! It’s 2021, and tooth powder is officially cool. But it’s not just for show: This tingly tooth powder is essentially just a powdered version of classic toothpaste, but with natural, simple ingredients that work like your favourite stain remover by binding to dirt and pulling it from the surface, revealing a whiter smile. It’s filled with charcoal and turmeric to whiten the teeth, cocoa to improve mineral absorption, liquorice to prevent cavities, coffee oil to improve blood flow in the gum tissue, vitamin E to support the gum tissue and a blend of essential oils to keep bad breath in check. Just dip your damp toothbrush into the powder and brush like normal. R169 from www.olgani.co.za, www.faithful-to-nature.co.za and Wellness Warehouse

NIVEA PEEL-OFF URBAN SKIN DETOX MASK What it is: A peel-off mask that’s actually good for your skin Why we love it: Apply, dry and peel – possibly the best fun you can have at home. Most peel-off masks are gimmicky, but this one leaves your skin ridiculously soft, smooth and mattified. That’s because this formula actually works: Once you peel off the mask (in a single layer, if you’re lucky), you’ll be left with a clean, purified complexion and clearer pores. It uses a combo of superstar ingredients – black rice and green tea extract – to decongest, condition and protect. Plus, it’s an ideal pick for every kind of skin type and works in as little as 15 minutes. There aren’t a ton of peel-off masks to be found at the drugstore, but happily, you can nab this standout that’s a huge hit on Instagram. City girls, this one is for you! R99.95 from Dis-Chem

SORBET PEDI-CARE FOOT MASK What it is: A foot mask that gives your feet the baby-soft feel of a salon treatment Why we love it: Make sure you bear your often-overlooked feet in mind when working from home. Treat your toes to this foot mask that’s invigorating, revitalising and active all at once. Infused with a potent combination of hyaluronic acid and argan oil, this holy grail product leaves feet silky-smooth and has an amazing scent. The booties are plastic and securely fasten, so there’s very little mess and you can comfortably move around if you choose, although we recommend using them while reading – it’s the perfect way to unwind. After the time is up, we rub the product into our feet. Post-mask, our feet feel super-soft after going way too long without a pedicure. It’s also a quick-fix for a dodgy fake fan. R59 from Sorbet salons and Clicks

SKINCEUTICALS REPLENISHING CLEANSER CREAM What it is: A spa-level indulgence that you’ll always find in our editor’s bathroom Why we love it: Whether your skin is super-sensitive or super-dry – or somewhere in the middle – this restorative cleanser with a calming cream-to-foam design will stun you with how it leaves even the most parched patches feeling baby-soft. The unique creamy gel texture makes rubbing it into your skin totally gratifying, while the ceramide complex locks in moisture, boosts the skin barrier and feeds the skin’s outermost layer with the goodness it needs to thrive in an instant. And, if used at night, it tucks skin into bed with a relaxing lavender scent. It’s highly effective and feels like a treat on your skin, which is why it’s consistently atop our bathroom vanity. Use it in conjunction with a warm flannel for best results. R750 from www.dermastore.co.za, www.skinmiles.com and select skincare professionals

1. GIORGIO ARMANI SÌ FIORI

Sweet yet deep, this velvety chypre floral scent is as romantic as it looks. If you don’t fall in love with the powdery pink exterior, you’ll fall for what’s inside. Best described as an elixir of femininity, this blackcurrant, orange blossom and vanilla fragrance exudes a positive vibe with an air of mystery. It oozes sensuality and has a musky finish but with a ‘prick’ of roses. Read: You’ll be irresistible! From R1,375 for 30ml from Woolworths, Edgars, Foschini and Truworths

2. NUXE PRODIGIEUX LE PARFUM

For unapologetic seduction tactics, NUXE’s rendition of its best-selling dry oil is as provocative as they come. The cult olfactory offering, which warms with the skin, is elegance bottled – think top notes of bergamot, mandarin, gardenia and magnolia and a dry down reminiscent of vanilla and coconut. Understated and effortless, sensual without being too obvious, it’s the ultimate neck-nuzzling perfume. R855 for 50ml from Woolworths, Truworths and Foschini stores

3. ELIZABETH ARDEN WHITE TEA MANDARIN BLOSSOM

Utterly chic inside and out, anyone would fall for this voluptuous, addictive and sparklingly fruity eau de toilette. An alluring alchemy of fruity-floral notes – think a delicious mix of mandarin, bergamot, lemon, exotic fruits, orange flower, jasmine, neroli and white tea – this summery spritz is a great go-to for romantic date nights or beach walks on balmy summer evenings. It’s also a prime first date perfume. R895 for 100ml from Woolworths, Edgars and Foschini

4. AZZARO WANTED GIRL

Magnetic? Check. Alluring? Check. Desirable? Check. This oriental floral fragrance strikes the perfect balance for date night with a blend of fresh pomegranate, ginger flower and datura flower with sweet notes of truly delicious dulce de leche and vanilla tonka bean. This isn’t just a perfume – it’s a potion concocted to make anyone fall under your spell. One spritz will boost your confidence in seconds. From R1,100 for 30ml from Woolworths, Edgars, Foschini, Truworths, Dis-Chem and Clicks

Skincare The most important step in your date night skincare routine? Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. To channel that fresh, happy glow you get from Valentine’s Day excitement, take time to deeply cleanse your skin with the 1. Burt’s Bees Soap Bark & Chamomile Deep Cleansing Cream (R250 from Dis-Chem). The combo of soap bark, chamomile and aloe in this cream formula work to cleanse skin from dirt, oil and pollution buildup, while a hint of menthol cools and soothes. Oh, and this being Burt’s Bees, it smells incredible! Our top tip is to massage it into dry skin and lay over with a hot muslin cloth to open your pores and leave you feeling fully refreshed. Then, plump it up with the 2. L’Occitane en Provence Delicious Lip Scrub - Fabulous Fig (R300 from L’Occitane en Provence). Whether you’re adopting a less-is-more approach or slicking on a neon lipstick for date night, your lips will take centre stage and this fruity exfoliator will leave them super-soft and flake-free. You’ll definitely be tempted to lick it off! Is there anything better than sipping on a glass of fizz and slathering your skin in your favourite face mask? The answer is no. After cleansing, follow with a brightening mask – the foundation of any luxurious skincare routine – like the 3. Diego dalla Palma Professional Plumping Hyalu Mask (R540 from select salons and spas). Like a refreshing glass of water for your skin, its serum texture transforms from white to silver on your skin and uses four different types of hyaluronic acid as well as vitamin E and crambe oil to leave it looking plumper. We like to apply this seriously hydrating mask while we’re in the bath to let the steam do its work and then pop on a pair of 4. Sothys Express Eye Patches (R135 per packet or R1,350 for a box of 10 from select salons and spas). These convenient, self-sticking patches stimulate circulation, giving the delicate skin beneath your eyes a nice refresh and a double tap-worthy glow. To amp up the radiance and create a real wow factor, we’re a fan of the 5. REN Radiance Perfection Serum (R820 from www.renskincare.co.za and select Woolworths stores). The best thing about this multi-active serum is that it tackles dull lack-lustre skin types. You can expect to see an instant dewy freshness after application, but then over the long term, it helps with the appearance of sun-damaged skin and hyperpigmentation. This complexion-correcting serum’s radiance-revealing properties will definitely make you want to go filter free! For dehydrated skin that’s anxiously awaiting a glow, the 6. Gatineau Aquamemory Concentrate (R930 from select Woolworths, Truworths and Foschini stores) is a must. This serum’s milky texture is as thirst-quenching for your skin as reuniting with your water bottle after a HIIT workout. The lightweight formula restores the skin’s barrier and softens without weight your face down with product and little goes a long way with this one, so it’s worth the investment. If you’re really targeting fine lines, discolouration and hyperpigmentation, the 7. SkinCeuticals C E Ferulic (R3,088 from www.dermastore. co.za, www.skinmiles.com and select skincare professionals) is worth the price tag. Your anti-ageing routine isn’t complete without this potent serum packed with three key ingredients – vitamins C and E and ferulic acid, a plant-based antioxidant found in foods like bran, oats and rice. It’s a splurge, for sure, but it’s won a handful of awards and editors everywhere (ours included) are obsessed with it – and the hype is certainly warranted. When you start waking up to brighter, smoother skin and reduced signs of ageing every day, you’ll realise that this serum is truly in a league of its own. Plus, you only need four or five pea-size drops for your entire face every morning, so it should last a long time. Fun fact: The formula stays active for 72 hours after you apply it, even after washing your face.

Body care Relax and indulge in a bath to calm your nerves before the evening begins. Burning a 1. Jo Malone London Pomegranate Noir Home Candle (R1,000 from Jo Malone London and select Woolworths stores) will give your soak a luxury overhaul and immediately set the tone as it’s the sexiest scent in the entire collection. If you’re having a cosy night in for Galentine’s Day, light it as your guests arrive. Then, add a few drops of the 2. REN Moroccan Rose Otto Bath Oil (R675 from www.renskincare.co.za and select Woolworths stores), a silky oil that smells like roses dipped in honey and does the hard work for you – moisturising your skin whilst you’re lying down. Now that’s our kind of date night hack! Two capfuls in the bath gives your limbs a much-needed hit of hydration, but doesn’t leave a greasy film on the bottom of your tub. Couple it with the 3. Nivea Love Fun Times Shower Gel (R36.99 from Clicks and Dis-Chem) – a nourishing formula with a vibrant pink grapefruit scent – and you’ll be smelling like a snack all night long. If you’re going to be applying self-tanner to achieve that flawless sun-kissed glow, it’s crucial to first use a good body scrub to prep your skin. You’ll get plenty of bang for your buck with the 4. Bodycare from Africa Charcoal Exfoliating Shower Gel (R109.95 from select Dis-Chem stores), a fantastic exfoliator with activated and vitamin E that smooths, buffs and purifies the skin. It’s totally sophisticated – as is the chic packaging – and is also incredibly effective for use on dry, chapped hands. The 5. St Moriz Professional Fast Tanning Mousse (R149.95 from Dis-Chem) is ideal when you need a tan ASAP: Achieve a light glow in one hour, a medium tan in two hours or a more bronzed tan in three hours. The lightweight mousse absorbs into the skin almost instantly – which, as any self-tanner aficionado knows, is the key to preventing colour streaking – and isn’t sticky or heavy. Use the 6. St Moriz Professional Mitt (R99.95 from Dis-Chem) to apply it from head-toe-toe. Bonus: The price tag lets you stock up on multiple bottles. For experienced self-tanners, the 7. Australian Gold Instant Sunless Lotion (R379.99 from Clicks) delivers quick, impactful results like no other. The supremely hydrating lotion spreads easily and makes you look like you just spent an afternoon lying by the pool, so you can leave your house feeling toned and tan. Best of all, you can use it commitment-free because the tan can wash off after just two hours. On the flip side, the 8. St Moriz Professional Gradual Tanning Lotion (R149.95 from Dis-Chem) is easy for beginners to use. The super-sheer self-tanner has a gorgeous, natural finish that’s easily buildable. Reapply it as needed to build your colour as deep as you want it. For best results, we recommend using it daily for up to three days before your date night. To keep your tan from fading too quickly, apply the 9. NUXE Moisturising Body Lotion (R325 from select Woolworths, Truworths and Foschini stores) with almond and orange blossom petals immediately post-shower while your skin is still damp to lock in moisture. If you hate waiting for your body moisturiser to dry, try the 10. Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream All-Over Miracle Oil (R440 from Woolworths, Edgars and Foschini), which will leave your skin supersmooth and is delicately scented with a light, citrus floral fragrance. It could be the reason you’re fashionably, not ridiculously, late.

Hair care A hot date is the perfect opportunity to take your look up a notch. Start with a good foundation by rethinking your wash formulas. 1. The Davines A Single Shampoo (R395 from www.completehairdressingsupplies.co.za) is an all-round triumph: Delicate enough for daily use yet efficacious enough for all hair types, it might be the secret to shinier and softer hair. Formulated with 95% natural ingredients, the gentle sulphate-free formula promotes elasticity and hydration. Next, it’s time to mask that frizz right out of your hair with the 2. Davines Oi Hair Butter (R395 from www.completehairdressingsupplies.co.za). This lightweight mask seems to tame and nourish even the most stressed-out strands (think bleached and broken) while controlling and protecting hair from frizz. Honestly, you can’t go wrong with implementing a good hair oil like the 3. Marc Anthony Grow Long Anti-Breakage Oil (R194.99 from Dis-Chem and Clicks) in your routine. Length? Check. Thickness? Check. Shine? Check. This cult-favourite oil uses a combination of caffeine, ginseng and sunflower seed oil to penetrate strands for silky smooth hair. Another popular pick for piecing broken hair bonds back together is the 4. OGX Anti-Breakage + Keratin Oil Weightless Rapid Reviving Oil (R209.95 from Dis-Chem, Clicks, Foschini and www.takealot.com), which acts as an essential dose of nutrition for your hair. If you don’t have time to treat your locks, the 5. Batiste Rose Gold Dry Shampoo (R93.99 from Clicks) will take your second-day hair from très tired to très chic for a glamorous night out in just a few minutes. For more luxurious-smelling strands, the 6. Byredo Eleventh Hour Hair Perfume (R1,080 from Skins Cosmetics) is the hair perfume that you never knew you needed. Imbue your style with a gorgeous scent featuring citrusy green top notes followed by a heart of wild fig, rum and carrot seeds.

Celebrity hairstylist David Gillson reveals his tips, tricks and advice Even if you’re not familiar with David Gillson’s name, you’ve likely seen his work. The Joburg-based hairstylist – and co-owner of Carlton Hair in Hyde Park and Melrose Arch as well as Issy’s in London – has a loyal following of high-profile celebrity clients and also tends to the manes of a growing list of media personalities. We asked David to tell us his go-to tricks that don’t require a master’s in glam-squad-ography. (Translation: Hair tips you can use in real life.) Read on, and steal his secrets.

01.

What post-lockdown hair trends have you been seeing? At the moment, there seem to be two main hair trends. Some people are lockdown-proofing their hair and opting for a low-maintenance look, while others are rebelling by choosing high-maintenance looks after months of dark roots, grey streaks and outgrown cuts. Those who believe hard lockdown 2.0 is imminent are embracing a very natural look and allowing their colour and cuts to grow out. On the other hand, those who think that now is the time for a big restyle are bleaching their hair or going for pastel colours like cotton candy pink, lavender purple, ombré turquoise and fluro green. 38 | w w w.s c en ein t h ec it y.c o.za | February/March 2 0 2 1

Share your hair saviours to lift lockdown locks. The entire Davines Oi range made with roucou oil, which consists of the Oi Shampoo, Conditioner, All in One Milk, Oil, Hair Butter and Body Wash. The sensational shampoo’s creamy white formula, which works well on nearly all hair textures, has a powdery floral scent and coddles hair with a blend of moisturising oils. You also need the lightweight All in One Milk in your life – and your shower. Spritz it on wet hair to detangle, and enjoy the added benefits of shine and hydration. If you’re looking for a finishing and styling oil, the Oil softens hair and adds just a subtle hint of polish and a leafy vanilla scent.

03.

Any tricks for gorgeous, low-maintenance hair? Long, loose layers look great blown out or air dried. If you choose to air dry your hair, use some Davines Oi Oil or Curl Moisturising Mousse – a creamy, compact mousse that gives shine to curly hair. You can also get away with snipping a long-layered cut every three to four months. I also recommend treating your locks with TLC by applying a hair mask at least once a week. When your hair is in fabulous condition, it’s easier to style because you aren’t trying to hide breakage or tame frizz. The travel-friendly Davines The Renaissance Circle repairing mask comes in a convenient packet and should be part of your beauty routine if you have dry, damaged or colour-treated locks, or if you use hot tools.

04.

What looks are your celebrity clients rocking this season? Tamara Dey has gone for a contrasting white blonde and black colour with an edgy cut that complements the colouring perfectly; Kerishnie Naiker has had a fresh cut and colour – a melted, warm chocolate brown that melds into light chocolate tones; and Claudia Henkel is still loving her blonde bob.

05.

Tell us about Davines’ most recent launch – A Single Shampoo. Davines has always pushed the boundaries in the world of beauty, but this is the brand’s most successful project yet. A Single Shampoo is the world’s first carbon zero shampoo that’s been created for daily use. The cleansing and conditioning formula is made of 100% traceable ingredients and is 98.2% biodegradable. Striving for a more environmentally friendly future,

S T Y L E & BE A UT Y

the recyclable packaging is made of renewable sources and uses 48% less plastic. By the time it makes it to your shower, the product is 100% carbon neutral through reforestation projects. I love it not only for its ultra-clean minimalistic design, but also because anything that’s better for the environment is holistically better for us humans, too.

GET TO KNOW DAVID Your top three skincare essentials? Heliocare Gel SPF 50 to protect my skin from the harmful UV rays, NeoStrata Smooth Surface Glycolic Peel Pads to refine skin texture and improve skin tone as well as the Eucerin Hyaluron-Filler Day Cream, which accelerates the renewal process of collagen in skin cells. Skin treatments you’ve splurged on? Fraxel DUAL, a non-invasive laser treatment that can resurface damaged skin; a non-surgical Liquid Facelift that combines Botox injections with dermal fillers; and Dermapen, which is fabulous for wrinkles and enlarged pores. I have all of these treatments done at Skin Renewal in Parkhurst. Your current scent obsession? The brand-new Rouge fragrance by Comme des Garcons, which is dressed in a red glass flacon. It’s an oriental spicy fragrance with notes of beetroot, pink pepper, ginger, mint, incense, labdanum and patchouli. You can purchase it at Skins Cosmetics in Sandton City. Restaurants we’re likely to bump into you at? My favourite restaurants in Joburg are Tortellino D’Oro in Oaklands for heavenly Italian food from pasta to gelato as well as Marble in Rosebank for dinner or a Negroni or glass of champagne at sunset. When I’m in Cape Town you’ll find me at Duchess of Wisbeach and La Perla in Sea Point, and when I’m in London I frequent Hakkasan for modern Chinese food, Daphne’s for a seasonal Italian menu and the relaxed yet sophisticated Ivy Chelsea Garden.

THE

best-kept secret OF THE

GARDEN ROUTE Why Knysna should top your summer holiday must-visit list Cities like Cape Town and Joburg attract thousands of visitors each year, and quite rightly so. But this extraordinarily diverse country is stuffed with glorious, lesser-known destinations, such as Knysna – a sleepy, sun-drenched and splendid harbour town on the Garden Route, South Africa’s most famous stretch of lush coastline and stunning beaches. By booking a summer holiday here, not only will your efforts be rewarded by fabulous food and wine, but also warm hospitality and a sense of having discovered something a bit different.

WHERE TO STAY:

TURBINE BOUTIQUE HOTEL AND SPA The grande dame of Knysna is as fabulous and seductive as ever. Part of a Heritage Walk on the picturesque Thesen Island, few hotels are as synonymous with their destinations as the Turbine Boutique Hotel and Spa. Frankly, if you don’t end up overnighting in one of this former power station’s guest rooms, just behind the massive turbines on the balcony and the intriguing steel pillars and pipes that form its quirky décor, it’s almost as though you were never in Knysna at all. This unusual, more-is-absolutely-more pocket of bare bricks, whitewashed walls and rooms shaped around its beautifully restored industrial past has come to embody all those reasons we travel to Knysna in the first place. Once inside, the splendour swirls all around you – think

machinery and pipes painted in vivid red, blue, green and orange, matched by dining chairs in different bright colours. Straight ahead, there’s a sultry lobby space; a little off to one side, you might detect the reassuring rattle of cocktails being vigorously shaken and expertly stirred at the Gastro Pub. Eclectic minimalism is how we’d describe the style of the 26 rooms. Six of them have balconies overlooking Thesen Island and Knysna Lagoon, and two have baths with views of the island’s canals. There’s also a romantically decorated honeymoon suite with a balcony that looks onto the swimming pool. While each room has its own individual personality, what they all have in common is that detail is of the essence: There’s free

S C E N E I N T H E CIT Y

Wi-Fi, a well-fitted kitchenette with an espresso pod machine and honeymoon-big and deep beds so sleep is long and blissful. Layering of soft colours, texture and assiduously polished antiques with contemporary craftmanship create a refined earthy feel. The rooms are also stuffed with thoughtful additions, from lightly scented sea salt crystals from Charlottle Rhys for the bath to cosy blankets to keep you warm on the leafy garden-view terraces. The buzzy restaurant, Island Café, is a true haven for any food lover. The ambience is both simple and elegant, and the chef turns out delectable dishes such as seasonal soup, line fish in a harissa cream sauce and passion fruit panna cotta served with passion fruit coulis. A baked tomato starter – cocktail tomatoes baked with basil pesto and feta, served with toasted bread – sums up the restaurant’s approach: Honest flavours and market-fresh ingredients. It can be playful – as in the main-course chicken supreme pasta made with tomatoes, garlic and Parmesan or the sticky toffee pudding served with ice cream – but mostly it’s just plain good. Of course, there’s also excellent wines and beer on tap. If you’re looking for a cosy place with a quiet corner, the utterly unpretentious Gastro Pub upstairs is like stepping into a countryside inn. Live sport is served up alongside quality craft beer, and the massive lifting hook and chains dating from the power plant days make an interesting talking point.

T R A VE L & L E I S UR E

For breakfast, a balance of texture, colour and flavour is executed with beautiful precision. With a healthy slug of yoghurt, honey toasted almond flakes, the fruit smoothie here borders on dessert. But the hotel is known for its Eggs Hollandaise – poached eggs topped with your choice of bacon, salmon or gypsy ham, cream cheese and a gloriously golden hollandaise sauce. Savour it, along with a vanilla flavoured coffee or crème caramel tea, slightly rustic croissants, cured meats, smoked salmon and a selection of cheeses in the dining room late into the morning – meaning you may just skip lunch. Whether for a day of indulgent relaxation or for a session with a particular treatment in mind, after breakfast we recommend booking into The Turbine Spa, which is undeniably fabulous with natural light, astonishing views and gorgeous BABOR products. The Knysna Journey – a deluxe foot scrub and massage followed by a deeply relaxing full body massage – is the treatment to book. And with the lagoon right outside, a walk afterwards completes any experience. The spa also offers facials, massages, grooming services as well as manicure and pedicure treatments if you do want to make a day of it. 36 Sawtooth Lane, Thesen Island, Knysna 044 302 5746 www.turbinehotel.co.za

WHERE TO EAT

EDITOR’S PICK: SIROCCO RESTAURANT A fancy fish joint where you can feast on the bounty of the sea with views to match With sweeping views of the harbour, Sirocco Restaurant is a fitting place to enjoy fresh oysters and other crowdpleasing seafood dishes. The vibrant space blends the rustic aesthetic of an oyster bar with the polish of a modern brasserie, making it a most worthy date spot on Thesen Island. The swish setting isn’t let down by the food, with the majority of the lengthy menu being super-fresh and super-exquisite seafood. Served with a delightful vodka and coriander chutney on the side, a fresh selection of oysters is available daily, and they’re best enjoyed with a glass of wine on the sleek patio. While Sirocco Restaurant has the menu for a quick oysters-and-wine fix, it’s also a popular spot for a multicourse feast. Our top tip is to skip traditional starters and take your pick from the sushi menu: Each piece is like a work of art, and all fish and other ingredients are exceptionally fresh. Seared, smoked or tempura fried, you can’t go wrong when you’re in the hands of highly skilled chefs. For mains, share the showstopping Sirocco Seafood Platter which serves two – think stunningly succulent baby soles, crumbed calamari heads and tubes, mussels and prawns grilled in olive oil, served with savoury rice, fries and a trio of dipping sauces. What’s more, the wine list is populated with inviting, hard-to-find wines, beers, ciders and spirits. The Bloedlemon gin and tonic on tap, served with fresh orange and cucumber slices, also pairs well with the seafood dishes thanks to the citrus flavours. TAPAS & OYSTERS A cheery, colourful tapas and oyster bar with a laidback atmosphere that makes you want to kick back

Knysna’s dining scene has exploded in recent years, with more options and cuisines to choose from than ever before. But sometimes you just want some cold, fresh oysters and a nice glass of wine. For some serious slurping, head to Tapas & Oysters on Thesen Island for the freshest raw oysters and views over the Knysna Lagoon towards the iconic Knysna Heads. Whether you prefer cocktail sized, medium or large coastal oysters; whether you slurp them down on their own or with delicate mignonettes – this waterside restaurant has been one of the town’s most in-demand options for local oysters that are sweet, briny and fresh since opening. Always full with a mix of locals and out-oftowners, its vibe is oyster bar perfection, with a simple,

retro interior and an excellent selection of tapas. We recommend splurging on a few favourite dishes to sample a bit of everything, from the chicken tenders served with a honey mustard dip and the jalapeño poppers stuffed with seasoned cream cheese, to the prawns grilled in garlic butter and the deep-fried calamari strips. If you’re a fan of late-night oysters, the restaurant is open until 21h00 every day. Pair them with a cold glass of wine – such as the refreshing Leopard’s Leap Sauvignon Blanc with herbaceous notes – or a classic martini and you’re in oyster bar heaven! At Tapas & Oysters, the kitchen proves that less is more. 31 Safron Lane, Thesen Island, Knysna 044 382 7196 www.tapasknysna.co.za

34 SOUTH A bivalve haven for those looking to take their oyster love to the next level Affordable, high-quality seafood brings people to this Knysna Waterfront spot. At 34 South, elegant nooks and sleek lighting set the stage for the standout menu. Choose from two seating experiences: The traditional white-tablecloth-equipped dining room or the lively outside deck, where you’ll find us dunking queen prawns in lemon butter and sucking down steamed abalone in an Asian broth with shimeji mushrooms and mange trout. The oyster menu is a marvel of both flavour and presentation, with every morsel – from the tempura oysters and the oysters grilled in garlic to the rich, creamy oyster soup – a delectable work of art. Knysna has some of the best oysters around, and at 34 South you can enjoy these little delicacies in style. There’s the Sushi Oyster – a salmon rose topped with a poached pickled oyster and wasabi mayo; the Asian Oyster dressed with ginger, garlic, rice vinegar and sweet soy sauce; and the Mexican Salsa Oyster bathed in tequila, tomato cocktail and a spicy Mexican salsa, to name but a few of the dressed oysters. The sushi menu is equally impressive: Creative rolls like the Red Rainbow Roll made with Peppadew and cream cheese or the West Roll with smoked salmon, crab and avocado are worth a try. Or, you can go traditional with fresh and beautifully ensembled rich salmon sashimi. A menu of cooked appetisers is available too, for sushi-averse dining companions. Shanghai Lungo - NEW Distinctively fruity coffee with generous citric and berry notes and a hint of fine acidity. INTENSITY 5 In a special tribute to South Africa, Nespresso has quite literally encapsulated the essence of the Mother City in its Cape Town Envivo Lungo, which forms part of the Nespresso World Explorations range. Cape Town features alongside 5 other cities in the collection, which allows coffee lovers to travel the globe through coffee by providing the in-cup result of these cities’ local tastes. Just like the city it’s named after, the Cape Town Envivo Lungo is bold and full of character. “Cape Town Envivo Lungo perfectly reflects South Africa’s coffee tradition. Not only does its taste profile and intensity express the richness of Cape Town, its culture and lifestyle, but it also mirrors its coffee heritage and how South Africans tend to enjoy their coffee – a blend of Arabica and Robusta, enjoyed long and with milk,” says Yassir Corpataux Coffee Ambassador Nespresso MEA. Inspired by the diversity of local coffee cultures, Nespresso set out on a discovery of coffee preferences and rituals around the world. The result is World Explorations, a range of Lungo coffees that captures the sensations, the soul and the coffee tastes of some of the world’s most admired cities, which you can enjoy from home, at the touch of a button. The capsules in the range are also made using 80% recycled aluminium as part of Nespresso’s ongoing efforts and commitment to its sustainability and circularity objectives.

As such, the brand partnered with local artist, Baba Tjeko, to bring the soul of this coffee-loving city to life. Tjeko, who regards coffee making and coffee drinking as an art form, says, “With World Explorations, Nespresso is celebrating coffee culture in different cities. In the context of Cape Town, it is really a vibrant, colourful city. Plus, it has a jazz element going on. I took these elements and integrated them into my visual language called Ditema to come up with a design that reflects the beautiful energy of the Mother City through African designs, ideas and perspectives.”

EDITOR’S PICK: FOUR SEASONS HOTEL THE WESTCLIFF Best for: Couples, or anyone after a taste of off-thecharts luxury in a sea of activity The crowd: A mix of honeymooning socialites, locals with a penchant for stealth luxury and well-heeled tourists lured by the reliability of the Four Seasons name The hotel: It’s not as instantly easy to kick back and relax on a hometown holiday as it would be on, say, a tropical beach or some distant riviera. But Four Seasons Hotel The Westcliff certainly helps. The allencompassing, quietly elegant and reliably comfortable hotel atop Jan Smuts Avenue in the glitzy suburb of Westcliff combines homestay comforts with the experiences craved from a trip abroad, be that culinary, cultural or otherwise. Switched-on staff, a strong food and booze offering and a pampering spa with stunning views – they really do know what they’re doing here, and it all feels impressively effortless. Set directly in the shadow of the sprawling Joburg skyline, there’s a quiet elegance to this deeply civilised, unashamedly grand city crash pad. The building is extraordinarily ornate, and the rooms are a beguiling blend of modern Africa and muted contemporary flair. They must also be some of the most spacious (and whisper-quiet) in the City of Gold. As for the glossy white-veined coffee-marble bathrooms … they leave you wanting for nothing. Design aside, all rooms are kitted out with everything you need, including that Four Seasons bed, which is one of the most comfortable around. If you’re ever going to Boomerang a pillow fight on Instagram, these fluffy, luxurious beds are the place to do it. The holiday vibe: The hotel is moments away from The Parks, it’s a short drive to Rosebank, and innercity attractions such as the brand-new Jewel City regeneration project and our favourite design-focused development, 99 Juta Street aren’t far away. It’s also around the corner from the hipster hotspot of Melville and its slew of vintage shops, concept stores, restaurants and bars. But it’s difficult not to feel on

holiday after spending time by the pool, which is so sumptuous it’s obscene and potentially the most stunning in Joburg – so spend as much time here as you can. The spa is for anyone feeling less than glamorous post-lockdown (raise your hand), showering you in fullbody and beauty treatments, such as the Red Nomads treatment inspired by the Himba; a body mask with natural African plant ingredients. At the atmospheric Flames Restaurant, which fuses the more familiar with the exotic in a grand dining room, the attention to detail really is quite remarkable. Start with the Pacific oysters served with lemon, mignonette and Tabasco, followed up quickly with some small plates to share – think springbok carpaccio, prawn kataifi and, for the more adventurous, tender Galician-style octopus. Signature cuts of meat are the main event: The Chalmar 28-day rib eye tomahawk with mushroom sauce is indulgent if you’re feeling flush, but the fillet is just as delicious. Other highlights include the Norwegian salmon paired with mussels and an intriguing lemon butter sauce as well as the gnocchi al tartufo laced with wild mushrooms, crème fraiche, black truffle and a healthy

layer of Parmigiano-Reggiano. Don’t be tempted to share the milk tart crème brûlée for dessert – you’ll want one to yourself. Insider tip: Although breakfast is included with the room rate, we recommend sleeping in and treating yourself to the Early Brunch instead, which runs from 10h30 to 12h00 on Saturdays and Sundays only. Priced at R595 per person, the brunch includes a glass of champagne, a cold platter to share, one hot dish each from the kitchen and sweet treats. For mains, go classic with eggs benedict with cured Italian ham, eggs royale with smoked salmon or a Spanish omelette with chorizo, potato, peppers, Parmesan and rocket. Or, go rogue and order the chicken and waffles with southern fried chicken and a fried egg or the oak smoked beef brisket with potato terrine, beef crackling and port reduction. Try to bag a seat on the terrace for sunny-side-up views of the city. 67 Jan Smuts Avenue, Westcliff 011 481 6000 www.fourseasons.com

FAIRLAWNS BOUTIQUE HOTEL & SPA Best for: Wellness seekers The crowd: High rollers enjoying the high life and local couples splashing out The hotel: It would be difficult to come to Fairlawns Boutique Hotel & Spa, on a leafy gated spot at the end of a quiet residential street in Morningside, and not be impressed by the tranquil, suburban oasis setting and beautifully coiffed grounds combined with its off-thecharts luxury thanks to the laser-focused attention to detail. Originally a 10-acre manor house that formed part of the Oppenheimer estate, this is a hotel that leans into its inherent grandeur – it’s all lion’s head sculptures, monochrome tiles and tables, gold monkey pots, shiny

phrenology busts and quirky knick-knacks. But a stay here is surprisingly relaxed as the distinctive, delightful Courtyard Suites – each different – have enough cool artefacts to make it feel more like your own apartment than a hotel. Dark teal clashes with spearmint cream, and deep red with pale pink, while gilded mirrors complement plush velvets and low-hanging lights. The sizeable bathrooms, which are almost suites in their own, each have double sinks, a freestanding bathtub and a rainfall shower. The holiday vibe: Simply wandering through the hotel’s gardens bulging with jacaranda blooms and a foliage-fringed pool, where you feel like you’ve walked into a painting, is quite enough. Though the opulent

Balinese-style spa set in the bamboo forest gardens is one of the best in Joburg – even in the country – where experienced therapists pad around giving guests transformative aroma-oil and deep-tissue massages, invigorating QMS Medicosmetics and Sothys facials as well as men’s sprucing sessions. The treatments are absolutely worth splashing out on – we recommend either the Tip-to-Toe Treat or the personalised Sento Bath Journey. You’ll also spend a lot of time at shimmering subterranean restaurant Amuse-Bouche, which offers a sophisticated à la carte menu and an award-winning wine list. We flew threw a three-course French-influenced meal without even feeling vaguely uncomfortable, or hungry, afterwards – testament to the purity and precision of the creative dishes using local ingredients (seared scallops with crispy pork belly or pappardelle pasta in a lobster bisque with cognac crème, tarragon and pronto fresco, anyone?). Insider tip: Pop your corks at Muse Champagne Room, a lavish little bar hidden away inside the hotel that serves top bubbles by French Champagne house, Perrier-Jouët and signature cocktails. The room is lovely, comfy and never too noisy, and the selection of canapés – which ranges from salmon ceviche with sour cream and black caviar to Parmesan churros – is not to be missed. 1 Alma Road, Morningside 011 804 2540 www.fairlawns.co.za

MENLYN BOUTIQUE HOTEL Best for: Anyone who wants to sleep more deeply than they ever have in their life The crowd: Business travellers and big spenders yearning for a break from the norm (and maybe a break from the kids, too) The hotel: In a city with so much history, Menlyn Boutique Hotel is a fresh breath of modernity. Located just a few minutes’ drive from Menlyn Park Shopping Centre, step inside and you’ll find yourself in a sweeping, art-filled lobby. It’s a truly transportive, tucked-away haven of serenity and relaxation, which makes it a posh home away from home where you can come and go as you please – stop by for a night or hunker down for a week or two. With only 27 rooms, the hotel has a distinctly residential feel with delicious finishes, and the rooms themselves are spacious but still intimate. The aesthetic here is an updated take on corporate interiors, with wood accents, neutral colours, beautiful fabrics and dramatic upholstered headboards. The tastefully outfitted rooms feel totally livable, especially with stately beds topped with luxurious bedding and fluffy pillows, so you can feel free to stretch out, toss and turn all night long. And, the staff’s tendency to go out of their way to accommodate families make a stay here comfortable in every imaginable way. The holiday vibe: The hotel houses The Black Sprout, formerly known as The Black Bamboo, one of the best South African restaurants (best restaurants period, actually) in the city. This is a place with personality, but it’s not all show – the dishes are a triumph of careful composition and texture. How about glazed fivespice duck breast with crispy skin, served with pickled cabbage, couscous, grilled apple and apple and radish slaw; or grilled kingklip in a beurre blanc sauce with smoothy, creamy polenta, sautéed spinach and curry sultana marmalade? Don’t forget dessert, either: Moist almond and honey cake and cream cheese-stuffed red velvet cookies are offered as the perfect end to dinner. It’s all ludicrously good value, and then there’s

For a bit of chill time, spend a full day treating yourself to a royal experience at Beauty Within, which offers traditional beauty services, de-stress treatments and herbal tea on tap. You’ll want to try the intensive full-body scrub for the full experience. Should you decide to step foot outside the hotel – there’s so much to do here that you actually don’t have to – you’ll be armed with dinner reservations, theatre tickets and anything else you fancy. Insider tip: When you’re craving hefty, classic pizza done right, Holy Dough – the hotel’s no-frills joint serving fast, tasty slices – does it all, and we mean all. The Bleu topped with free-range chicken, cherry tomatoes, Parmesan, rocket and a rich homemade mayo is a highlight, but we can’t ever deny the Leal made with gorgeously stringy mozzarella, wood-fired butternut, caramelised onion and baby spinach. 209 Tugela Road, Ashlea Gardens, Pretoria 086 100 7387 www.menlynhotel.com
