EDITOR’S PICK: VOCO JOHANNESBURG ROSEBANK Why we love it: With so many Joburg hotels done in fiercely good taste, there’s something refreshing about Africa’s first voco hotel – with modern elements, contemporary flourishes and a colour scheme heavy on flamingo pink. Because as much as we enjoy a marvellously theatrical lobby and marble checkerboard floors, we also fancy something a little buzzy, bold and the place to be seen. Situated in The Bank on the corner of Cradock and Tyrwhitt Avenues, this scene-stealing landmark hotel is a swish experience from the outset. Inside, it’s all swirly carpets, gold-trimmed frames, tubular bronze lighting, thick curtains with tassles and covetable matte black designer tapware, with a dash of offbeat art to keep things fresh. Shades of navy blue and almond green create a stylish look, tastefully complemented by modern furniture pieces.

Our Superior King Room was high-end in all the right ways (fabulous views, heaps of space, a walk-in rain shower, heated floors in the bathroom and a bed covered in cloudlike linens), but not at all over-the-top. It also provided quiet respite from the busy shopping district – so much so, you wouldn’t know The Zone @ Rosebank and Rosebank Mall are just a stroll away. Unfailingly professional staff are in the know about the latest restaurants to try, but there’s no denying that Proud Mary on the ground floor is the beating heart of the hotel. The buzzing restaurant and bar draws a high-gloss crowd starting at breakfast and continuing until the early hours with its weekend brunch, life-changing drinks and plates to share. It’s a dreamy spot for a nightcap.

JOHANNESBURG MARRIOTT HOTEL MELROSE ARCH Why we love it: This new tech-forward hotel has put a ton of thought into the first impression, and it shows. Described as a business-leisure hybrid, the Johannesburg Marriott Hotel Melrose Arch is super-sleek from the staff to the architecture – a real design pin-up for Melrose Arch, with Archer Bar & Eatery at the heart of the local scene. The service is exemplary: You get a fantastic sense of the Marriott hospitality right away and there are almost always bespoke, attentive greeters at the door to help with any immediate request. Well-travelled guests will love the 306 impeccably designed rooms and suites, luxurious amenities, touchless tech and lightning-fast Wi-Fi. Styled in charcoal greys and striking black shades, you won’t soon forget the impressive design and small details in the bedrooms. Between the bedside USB plugs, pillow-top mattresses, plush furniture as well as electronic housekeeping and ‘do not disturb’ systems, you’ll find every comfort imaginable. Our high-design Deluxe Guest Room – with a dark and moody colour palette – had a comfortable bed, blackout curtains, 55-inch flat-screen TV, and a marble bathroom with both a shower and a tub. While room service is available 24/7, you can choose to order in from any of Melrose Arch’s phenomenal restaurants and the staff will collect the food and bring it to your room. Order the complimentary breakfast and take in the tranquil sounds of morning before a day of exploring – the breakfast buffet is incredible, with pastries that wouldn’t look out of place in France. When you fall for Melrose Arch and decide to stay forever, visit the hotel’s website for one, two and three-bedroom apartments to rent. 42 The High Street, Melrose Arch, Birnam 010 495 4200 www.marriott.com

RADISSON RED JOHANNESBURG ROSEBANK Why we love it: Sassy and playful, Joburg’s first Radisson RED is perfect for those keen to experience the younger side of the city. Aiming to blend home comforts, design-led flair, hotel treats and office-away-from-home functionality, it’s a hybrid hub where curious locals and travellers come to eat, drink, work, relax and sleep. The staff are accommodating and rigorously polite from the moment you arrive at the check-in desk – nothing seems like too much trouble. The 222 compact but comfy rooms continue the vibrant theme with layers of colours and patterns, which will make Radisson RED loyalists feel right at home. To experience the interiors at their best, nab one of the serene and cosy yet sleek and comfortable One-Bedroom Premium Suites. Every detail is considered – the abstract wallpaper in monochromatic red, the smart TV that you can stream your devices to, the convenient plugs next to the bed and the illuminated mirror in the bathroom. However, a big part of the draw here (and what sets the

trendy, affordable hotel apart from others in the area) is the rooftop bar and red mosaic-bordered pool. Diners can feast on salt and pepper fried calamari, tempura cauliflower, cheese and jalapeño balls as well as pork ribs with sour cream and crispy bacon bites from lowerground restaurant OUIBar + KTCHN before spending the evening taste-testing their way through top-notch tipples. There’s no denying that Rosebank is lively at night – the neighbourhood is ever-evolving and constantly packed with things to do. For those seeking a cool sleepover within walking distance of some of the city’s best foodie corners and bars or a fun night out, this is the place to stay. PROTEA HOTEL BY MARRIOTT JOHANNESBURG BALALAIKA SANDTON Why we love it: Don’t wrinkle your nose at the big business name. The fresh-faced Protea Hotel by Marriott Johannesburg Balalaika Sandton – a reborn, impressively crafted hit of nostalgia – is shaking up the way we experience much adored Sandton. The excellent location is ideal for zipping around the vibrant, modern neighbourhood: The hotel is connected to The MARC and neighbours the Johannesburg Stock Exchange and key offices in the financial district, so it tends to draw business people who are short on time. On weekends, you’ll likely see a few families and an influx of couples. Add to that a fitness centre, a pool, a classic and carnivorous restaurant (even the red wines are meaty), conference and meeting rooms plus comprehensive services, and you have a favourite among a truly eclectic mix from around the world. With 330 rooms, this is one of the largest hotels in the city that maintains a cosy atmosphere thanks to well-trained, attentive staff. It’s also one of the older upscale hotels – we found the colour scheme and rich draperies a bit dated, but there’s plenty to love about the sizable rooms with a somewhat business-minded feel. We stayed in a King Guest Room with views of the lush garden, which felt reasonably spacious. Marriott always seem to have great beds, and this hotel is no different: You can expect an extra-large double bed with extra support and 300-thread count cotton sheets. The bathrooms won’t let you down either – both good-looking and functional, they feature a standing shower with a powerful shower head, a separate bathtub and earthinspired Eartherapy amenities. 20 Maude Street, Sandton www.marriott.com 011 322 5000

The Protea Hotel by Marriott Johannesburg Balalaika Sandton has undergone a series of renovations, updating the upmarket Sandton venue’s facilities and elevating its appeal to both business and leisure travellers in the City of Gold. Starting in September 2020, 156 of the Balalaika’s rooms were refurbished to include smart TVs and updated WiFi. This was followed by a comprehensive refurbishment of the old “Colony Restaurant”, which has been re-branded and is now known as The Conservatory. The old Crown Court Lounge received its upgrade in December 2020, and has reopened as the new airline and VIP lounge, “the Destination Lounge”. Hotel conference room floors and the hotel gym also received upgrades, and the gym is now fully equipped with new steam rooms. The banqueting and conference facilities do not detract from the country atmosphere of the hotel and are situated out of sight on the first floor. The Bull Run, our on-premises restaurant provides an experience that is both warm and welcoming, with a clever nod to the New York Stock Exchange and the classic NY grill house. Custom light fittings, plush furniture and handmade wall tiles contribute to the comfortable and evocative space. Our new menu is inspired by fresh produce, succulent cuts of meat that create distinctive pairings of complimentary organic ingredients all ensuring unique signature dishes along with our staple best-sellers.

EDITOR’S PICK: LE QUARTIER FRANÇAIS

A sumptuous hideaway with a zingy contemporary twist – all in an exceptionally convenient location We all need glamour sometimes – and nowhere in the culinary capital delivers glitz quite like Le Quartier Français, a quietly confident, high-design boutique hotel hidden in plain sight. The hotel’s elegant façade amid beautifully coiffed grounds points onto the charming Huguenot Street. The village of Franschhoek is one of the most unspoiled areas in Cape Town, surrounded by cafés, restaurants, wine bars and trinket shops. Inside, the place feels modern but also precisely like the holidays. It would be difficult not to have a very special stay here, both thanks to the latest in luxury and the unfailingly warm, sincere and pitch-perfect service. Just beyond the art-studded lobby, the bright-turquoise swimming pool is a thing of limpid temptation. The hotel’s position, set well back from the street, affords sweeping views of the mountains behind it. It’s the feeling of intimacy that makes the place. Only 21 auberge-style rooms and four suites mean Le Quartier Français is selective and full of charm, however, the hyped-up interiors (exquisite colour schemes, a multitude of textures, modern art and

clever lighting) give it the edge. What you can expect from your room totally depends on which one you’ve booked, but there’s a pleasing coherence to the entire undertaking – softly carpeted and wrapped in chintz, with all the plush creature comforts to make for a memorable stay. If you’re after more space, it’s definitely worth booking one of the roomier Four Quarters Suites that come with separate sitting areas and walk-in wardrobes. Swathed in energising orange with earthy browns, murky greens and ochre tones, our suite was complemented by slick air-conditioning, central heating and all the requisite contemporary luxuries – from fast, free Wi-Fi to a Nespresso machine. Founder Analjit Singh’s signature style permeates everything. Between the reams of patterned wallpaper, eclectic assortment

of artwork and one of those cloud-like Leeu Collection beds (that can steal hours of sleep without trying), there were personal touches waiting for us too, such as fresh fruit and a bottle of red wine. Lights are modern, simple and dictate the mood. Taking centre stage in the marbled bathroom, with double sinks and black-and-white checkered floors, is the freestanding bathtub. The Healing Earth Lemon Verbena & Argan Oil bath products are the perfect late-night antidote to a day exploring the Winelands. Plus, the well-stocked mini bar has plenty of wine, gin and vodka to sip while you soak. Le Quartier Français has a real trump card – its unbuttoned restaurant, Protégé, overseen by head chef Zane Soutar. It’s entirely conditioned to get you to relax: Dining is spread out across the front terrace, dining room (embellished with an open kitchen and an open bar) and back terrace. It feels airy and ample at quieter times of day and intimate and buzzy at night.

On the menu of small plates to graze on, there’s a roti stuffed with spice-glazed lamb, rum braised pineapple and coriander; grass-fed beef and crispy sweetbreads in a puddle of pepper truffle cream; delicate Cape Malay seared tuna topped with kerala, curry leaf, sultana and chutney; and fantastically tender line fish with chimichurri, chorizo, smoked mussel and baby squid. Each plate places an emphasis on individual ingredients and elevated sophistication, creating exciting flavours that surprise as much as they fill you up. Cocktail lovers are spoiled with seasonal creations, as are sweet-toothed guests with a spin on a classic banoffee pie. Most of the evening footfall comes from outside guests rather than residents, which means the restaurant is often full. The addictively crunchy Korean fried chicken books out tables weeks in advance. In the mornings, lavish breakfast options include creamy yoghurt parfait or a crisp-on-the-outside, fluffy-on-the-inside croissant stuffed with Black Forest ham and Boerenkaas. Continue the feast with a luxurious blend of sourdough, soft poached eggs, smoked Franschhoek trout and hollandaise sauce. The breakfast in bed forgoes none of the taste offered if you were to eat it in the restaurant – an element that often falls through the marble cracks of five-star hotels.

LUDUS MAGNUS A magically restorative place for the work-hard, play-hard crowd

It’s not as if you needed another reason to visit this ethereal escape, but Ludus Magnus is undoubtedly the most significant opening in Franschhoek within the past year. An aggressively stylish home-from-home dressed in the French-Italian owners’ personal art collection, in a curious way, Ludus Magnus exists as much for South Africans as it does for visitors. Blend quietly polished design with laidback Cape Winelands attitude and you get this off-the-grid hideout, distinguished by bold, dramatic black exteriors amid vineyards. The first thing you’ll notice from this statement property emerging from Two Rivers Farm are the views. It means there’s always something to catch your eye from the open-air terrace of its Manor House rooms – and reason to order local coffee for breakfast each morning. Just eight ultra-modern bedrooms in the Manor House allows a passionately bespoke approach rather than your classic design overhaul. All celebrate the landscape – including 14 citrus tree varieties, an olive grove and a shiraz vineyard – and pull a palette of greys and greens from the surrounding sun-soaked vineyards, combined with quirky contemporary happenings to lift them out of the ordinary. The views are always interesting, but the upstairs rooms are perhaps the most startling of all. Aurelia, our boldly decorated room encased in glass, was elegant without being too much – an exceptionally large bed with clean, crisp bedding; playful yet grownup textures and materials; and complimentary colours that aren’t too dramatic. Even the fussiest will be hard-pressed to find fault with it. The bathroom was a design triumph too, with a glazed concrete floor and wallpaper with animal and plant motifs for an eclectic twist. The three villas enjoy the same scrumptious spec of design and embrace an everything-you-neednothing-you-don’t ethos.

The sleek and sexy, loosely communal dining area is a central hub; a great place to connect with other travellers and share the day’s adventures. You can also arrange for a cosy private dinner – where feasts begin with butternut and ginger soup and end on sticky date pudding, paired with Thelema or Bartinney wines – if that’s what you prefer, along with early-morning beverages, baked goods, and delicious cold cuts and cheeses in Le Creuset crockery delivered to your door. We’re not sure what the guest-to-staff ratio is here, but it feels as if you have your own gracious member of staff personally taking care of you from the moment you arrive. While there are plenty of award-winning hotels in Franschhoek – both in the village and on surrounding wine farms – none offer the luxury of space and the choice of leisure facilities that Ludus Magnus does. The whole point of being here is to get into the thick of it all, and the team here can assemble wellness and relaxation treatments, river kayaking, river tubing, horse riding, private yoga sessions, rugby, soccer, golf or trail running. The Olympian training pool backed by palm trees wouldn’t look out of place at a beach resort. From the pool, you look up to craggy mountain peaks that are blanketed in snow in winter. There’s also enough room in the gardens to tuck yourself away for a horizontal afternoon on a sunbed. With ample opportunities for fitness and pampering, it’s not hard to believe that some guests never leave the property. Though the real draw may be the mission of the hotel itself. Environmental sustainability is an everyday priority for the husband-and-wife-owners. They’ve planted banana, pear, plum, mango, litchi, avocado and macadamia nut trees, but the fact that Ludus Magnus generates its own water and electricity is even more impressive. Along with birdsong, such knowledge can help each guest sleep just a little more soundly. Ludus Magnus is everybody’s fantasy hideaway – an elevated adventure base camp for both earth-minded and privacy-seeking travellers. FRANSVLIET GUESTHOUSE An exclusive working farm to catch the prettiest landscapes of the season

Set against a dramatic mountainous backdrop, Franschhoek is a place of natural beauty all year round. But in the cold months, it’s hard to imagine a better place to see whole mountainsides and valleys of trees turning from spring-summer greens to a fiery palette of oranges and reds. The family-owned Fransvliet Guesthouse among the copper and crimson leaves is a cosy winter refuge that’s actually affordable – one where you don’t have to sacrifice comfort or location. There’s an immediate excitement outside Fransvliet Estate’s unassuming entrance. Sweeping down the driveway, weaving between rows of vines and dusty blue hydrangeas, you know you’ve arrived somewhere truly magical. From a distance, your destination looks like a simple farmhouse surrounded by white cottages. But close up, they’re elegantly designed with plenty of thoughtful touches. You’re close to town and right next to Maison Estate (it’s worth booking lunch at Chef’s Warehouse at Maison), so you can’t do much better. Five suites – namely Sauvignon, Chenin, Chardonnay, Cabernet and Shiraz – are dotted around lush gardens and grounds. The tranquil bedrooms sleep a small total of 10 guests and are suitably intimate.

The star of the estate is the Chardonnay suite – generously proportioned with a palpable sense of contemporary calm. Cleverly, it manages to feel like an extension of its natural surroundings: Fresh white walls sing next to a variety of greens and all things lemon-coloured, creating a striking signature aesthetic. The light-filled room comes with crisp linen, air conditioning, a wood-burning fireplace, a smart TV, complimentary Wi-Fi, a Nespresso machine, heated bathroom floors, a freestanding bath and bespoke Molton Brown toiletries lined up along the double vanity. It’s fabulous for extended stays or anyone with a lot of luggage to unpack. The guesthouse doesn’t have a restaurant, however, there’s a solid breakfast offering each morning. Arrive to fruits, yoghurts, seeds, nuts, baskets of fragrant breads and freshly pressed seasonal juices, such as zesty W i nt e r 2022 | www. sc e n e i n th e c i ty . c o . z a | 29

cantaloupe, orange, ginger and turmeric. Well-executed hot dishes change daily, but the portobello eggs Benedict with black forest ham and homemade hollandaise sauce is a sure bet. In the summer months, you can ask the staff to pack you a gourmet picnic. With quintessential summertime nibbles and indulgent delicacies, you’d be a fool not to. Otherwise, no other food is served, so stock your in-room fridge with goodies. Best of all is the welcome dollop of peace and quiet at Fransvliet Guesthouse. Come here to follow the country paths, walk through the vineyards and savour the sunset with a glass of local shiraz or cabernet sauvignon. From back roads to olive groves, you could explore for a whole week and spot something new each day. An added benefit for hotel guests is that general manager Victor knows the ins and outs of the area and is happy to offer his local tips.

WHERE TO STAY CLICO BOUTIQUE HOTEL Rosebank is the Joburg neighbourhood with many faces. In the last 10 years, it’s shape-shifted its way through late-night party spot to become the hub of up-and-coming foodies and some of the city’s most sought-after tables. A hop, skip and a leap from Rosebank Mall, The Zone @ Rosebank, The Firs, the Gautrain Rosebank Station and vibrant mixed-use precinct Oxford Parks, Clico Boutique Hotel is a self-contained oasis. Right in the thick of Joburg’s most frenetic neighbourhood, it combines a warmly welcoming atmosphere with the attributes of a fully-fledged hotel – including a glamorous dining room and nine peaceful, softly lit bedrooms away from the thrum. The bedrooms are pockets of tranquility, each adorned with artwork, creamy carpets and fluttery ivory curtains. Rooms range from a pocket-sized Standard Room to a muchlarger Superior Room and a pet-friendly Executive Suite. Our Superior Room,

Room 4 on the ground floor, was painted in muted colours and clean-line modernist aesthetic. It had a sweet little private terrace – a natural spot for wine sipping and star gazing – as well as an open-plan bathroom with a shower and a wallow-in-me bath. The rest of the hotel is equally charming, particularly Clico Restaurant, where local, seasonal produce is sourced and cooked with respect by head chef Davies Moagi. Diners can expect dishes including beetroot cured salmon, springbok carpaccio, beef fillet and a duo of duck plus a varied wine selection. For dinner, revel in pan-fried baby squid with warm black rice salad, lobster bisque and onion tobacco followed by slow-cooked, oozy mushroom risotto with textures of mushrooms and pecorino cheese. We’re pleased to say we enjoyed every bite. Puddings are just as good – flourless chocolate torte, rooibos-infused crème brûlée, and vegan mango and coconut panna cotta. And for breakfast? The combinations are generally delicious old favourites. However, it’s the superefficient and genuinely passionate staff that made the experience special during our visit. Out and about: You’re in prime walking country here, so follow your nose around Rosebank’s endless alleys and backstreets and build up an appetite. You’re bound to stumble upon some of Joburg’s top restaurants and foodie hotspots. We’re big fans of Marble, with chef David Higgs at the helm – the inventiveness (coal-fired octopus pepped up with black sesame aioli, green pepper salsa, charred corn and green olives, or rib eye steak accompanied by a Hasselback potato and Jack Daniels cream sauce) is breathtaking but never feels like showing off.. 27 Sturdee Avenue, Rosebank 011 252 3300 www.clico.co.za

WHERE TO EAT OLIVES & PLATES HYDE PARK

Joburgers know full well the hype around Olives & Plates - Hyde Park is worth it. The restaurant first opened in 2019, and it’s been a battle to get a table ever since. The Instagram-friendly interiors (think a pink-and-turquoise colour palette, velvet booth sofas and lots of gold accents) are bound to draw the crowds, but its excellent food is what’s fuelled this growth. When it comes to food, there’s everything from breakfast to light meals and small plates available, but the best time to visit is as the sun is setting (we highly recommend making a reservation) to see the city in daylight and at night. As dinner service picks up, it’s also nicely noisy with a relaxed, social atmosphere. What owner Andria Neophytou is doing, quite brilliantly, is taking the best of what’s in season and making it something wonderful the whole table will talk about. It’s all about the best ingredients, combined into flawless plates including grills, burgers, pastas, souvlaki and other hearty, filling meals. There’s also a selection of vegetarian dishes available for those who follow a plant-based diet. The burrata, kataifi-wrapped halloumi and spanakopita triangles shine as a starter, but meat

lovers won’t be disappointed either – the grilled beef skewer is phenomenal, and the chorizo sausage particularly tempting. For mains, every dish is big on beautifully arranged combinations of texture, flavour and colour. A gorgonzola sauce swims pleasingly around a fillet steak, while the crunch and softness of Parmesan panko-crusted chicken fillets is enhanced by herb cream cheese and an artful stack of triple-cooked chips. The creamy prawn linguine – with a good spritzing of lemon zest and a mound of fresh pecorino on top – is glorious, too. We guarantee you’ll find it hard to pick a plate! Of course, no visit is complete without a slice of cake. Two things make eating here particularly special: The charming service and the unspeakably delicious, perfectly smooth and tangy baked cheesecake. It would be great with an espresso, but we finished ours too quickly to find out. RESTAURANT SPOTLIGHT

A dining extravaganza not to be missed at The Test Kitchen Carbon Rosebank is getting more than its fair share of foodie openings. Equally edgy and electric, warm and welcoming – use any excuse you can to visit The Test Kitchen Carbon. This restaurant in the new Oxford Parks development is crackling with energy right now. Everything is technically precise, but it’s chef Luke Dale-Roberts’ culinary storytelling unfolding with every bite that makes the experience sing. We may have just entered Joburg’s greatest dining era yet.

hether you’re a Joburg native or transplant, you’ve become accustomed to seeing construction everywhere; packed-together skyscrapers and cranes stitching the City of Gold together in seemingly haphazard ways. Has there been a more successful urban regeneration project than the neighbourhood of Rosebank, though? With the opening of The Shortmarket Club Johannesburg in October 2021 followed by The Test Kitchen Carbon in March 2022, this is now one of Joburg’s foodie hubs – and it shows no signs of slowing down any time soon. Dark tones, industrial details and an open-plan linear space aren’t quite what you’d expect from a swanky fine-dining restaurant. There’s nowhere to hide, and nothing masking the eight to 11-course tasting menu filled with surprising flavours and textures. But then you see that it’s neatly divided up into lots of different spaces – including snug little spots for two with the open kitchen just behind and stools around the counter to glimpse the artistry in action – and you know you’re in for a different take on haute cuisine. The Test Kitchen Carbon is a seriously special occasion spot that’s all about food enlightenment, inventive cooking and plenty of lavish ingredients. As its name suggests, The Test Kitchen Carbon is a reincarnation of the original Cape Town restaurant. The décor, which plays with a familiar industrial chic and its namesake colour, single-handedly proves that the dark side has plenty of perks. The vibe is romantic fine dining with a playful touch: Think cowhide upholstery, burnt timber artworks and light wooden floors amid a sea of white tablecloth-clad tables. HAUS Architects in collaboration with Sandalene Dale-Roberts (chef and owner Luke’s wife) have created a space that’s sophisticated but not stuffy. Huge windows flood the space with natural light during the day, and after dusk soft golden lighting hits the ancient yellowwood bar counter, giving everyone a sexy glow.

Impressive CVs abound from the team heading up The Test Kitchen Carbon. Chef Luke Dale-Roberts is known for pushing the envelope to the highest levels of culinary excellence and has a loyal following among South African foodies, so food is an incredibly serious matter around here. The prices are above average (R950 for the lunch tasting menu and R1,900 for dinner) and the menu is edgy. In other words, this isn’t a place to simply refuel. However, this is a great opportunity to experience the mechanism and team that’s earned Luke’s restaurants multiple awards. Pure, unadulterated poetry on a plate. Since meals can last up to four hours, arrive with plenty of time to spare. Only a chef of this calibre, who conjures up food that you’ll be dreaming about for the rest of your life, could expect timestressed Joburgers to sit still for that long. Foodwise, there’s a lot to like. The menu changes depending on which produce is in season, keeping the food ambitious and full of flavour. Head chef Tyron Gentry, who’s spent the last seven years working closely under Luke, offers playful takes on, well, everything – from the ‘Billionaire’ hors d’oeuvre topped with 24-carat gold leaf to a seared bite of wagyu served with a hand-pinched mushroom gyoza in a beef coconut broth. His lunch menu is, as you’d expect, presented like mini works of edible art. We loved the sashimi with ponzu and yuzu (a Japanese citrus fruit) that brings a nice jolt of acid to the meal; the paella-style risotto with lemon, calamari oil and a generous serving of crayfish tail adding to its extravagance; and the Japanese gazpacho with crème fraîche sorbet, aubergine nitsuke and salmon roe, which presents delicate mouthfuls of flavour. And never mind the achingly tender springbok balanced by chicken liver parfait and fig, or the upside-down lemon tart that finds its perfect counterpart in tequila sorbet. Every dish has clearly been extensively brainstormed before being presented. A lineup of thoughtfully considered vegetarian options gives the menu a suitably contemporary balance. 44 | w w w .s c en ein t h ec it y.c o .za | Winter 2 0 2 2

The Test Kitchen Carbon is a place for special occasions – and the meal should match. So, if you’re feeling spendy, we recommend you put yourself in the excellent hands of the sommelier and prepare to be wowed by the international wine pairings (R2,550 with the lunch tasting menu). This is the place to try something new: The restaurant stocks French and Spanish wines not found anywhere else in Joburg and the staff knows what they’re talking about, so you can ask questions and learn. We were particularly taken with the light and citrusy Mirabeau en Provence Pure Rosé 2020 and the Bodegas LAN D-12 2011 – a very complex Tempranillo with layers of flavours from start to finish. This might be the most creative meal you’ve had in years. THE RESTAURANT AT GLEN CARLOU Best for: Classic tastes with a twist Why we love it: Along with world-class vino and gourmet dining experiences, the bucolic Glen Carlou Wine Estate delivers impressive views, eye-catching architecture – a snug thatched roof sits atop the tasting room and restaurant – and a generous dollop of South African hospitality. Timeless and elegant, The Restaurant at Glen Carlou immediately makes you want to celebrate something … anything. Whether it’s a casual get-together or something that’s been on the books for weeks, this is a place to sit down to homestyle dishes that rely on fresh, seasonal produce. Flavours are bold and the portions are hearty – on the evolving menu, you’ll find starters like beef carpaccio perked up with truffle aioli, shaved Parmesan, wild rocket and lemon, or the light and lovely fried squid with radish, orange, lemon, fennel and micro herbs. Order one of everything and share. For mains, must-try items include the goat’s cheese ravioli with butternut, raisins, honey and sage, tossed in beurre noisette that imparts an incredible toasted, nutty flavour, as well as the rolled and roasted pork belly that comes with all the trimmings – prunes, apricots, soy crème and your choice of rustic fries or orange sweet potato. The dark chocolate brownie with bananas brûlée, banana purée and ice cream hits the sweet spot for dessert. The service is noteworthy, too – the staff are friendly and laidback, and the three-course menu is well-timed and efficient without making you feel rushed. With a range of affordable to special-occasion wines, we recommend a wine tasting tailored to your tastes before lunch. The case to take home is the Glen Carlou Grand Classique 2020 – made from a blend of cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc, merlot, malbec and Petit Verdot – with a decadent crushed velvet texture and a long oak-kissed finish. It’s also worth peeking at the art collection. TOKARA RESTAURANT Best for: Losing track of time Why we love it: With its high-altitude vineyards and winter-ready terrace, there’s nothing in the Cape Winelands quite like this magical destination on top of Helshoogte Pass – both as a stunning, modern winery and a food lover’s paradise. Tokara Restaurant calls for a special occasion like an anniversary or a birthday, but craving a modern take on South African cuisine counts as special too, right? The artfully plated food here is a testament to the thought and intention behind executive chef Carolize Coetzee’s cooking. Her carefully curated multi-course gastronomic journey combines local ingredients with the odd global influence and accomplished technique, and the results are always interesting. Photogenic dishes arrive in a myriad of shapes, colours and textures – think avocado mousse with green asparagus, charred baby gem lettuce, coconut yoghurt and lemon, or roasted Bonsmara beef with carrot and potato beignets, green beans, baby carrots, kapokbos and red wine jus – 52 | w w w .s c en ein t h ec it y.c o .za | Winter 2 0 2 2

making them all the more appetising. Starters like tempura prawns (mango, lychee, cucumber, coconut, green chilli, coriander and lime) or venison carpaccio (goat’s cheese, fig leaf, pumpkin seeds, salted strawberry and white balsamic) are the perfect preludes to the robust, flavourful mains such as Karoo lamb sirloin with masala-spiced braised lamb rib dumplings. The fish here is as fresh as it comes; the pan-seared line fish brims with sweet caramelised grilled pineapple, baby marrow, red pepper, prawn bisque and sumac. As for drinks, you can’t go wrong with a roomtemperature glass of Tokara Director’s Reserve Red or a flute of Blanc de Blanc MCC. Most importantly, the terrace is covered to protect you from the elements. ANTHONIJ RUPERT MANOR HOUSE Best for: Old-school glitz Why we love it: High tea. Yes, it’s twee. But the quintessentially British tradition gets a Cape Winelands makeover at Anthonij Rupert Estate, with lavish tiered towers set amid snowcapped mountains, rolling green hills, fragrant lavender and a meticulously landscaped garden. Though it’s located in Franschhoek, the fairytale-like Manor House – packed with historical charm and full of exceptional details – feels like it belongs in the Provençal countryside. The lounge is sensational (you can imagine winemaker Graham Beck, who previously owned the house, reclining languorously), but if the sun is out, nothing beats the terrace, where pots of Early Grey and chamomile tea are delivered to diners all afternoon long. The L’Ormarins High Tea begins with a glass of L’Ormarins Brut Classique NV before moving onto every iteration of afternoon indulgence you could ever hope for. There are delicate Provençal vegetable and cream cheese finger sandwiches, still-warm savoury vegetable muffins with herbs and crème fraîche as well as cheese and crackers reimagined with eggplant mousse and red pepper gel. But the pastries are the main attraction: Cheesecake infused with guava and lime; an elegant Valrhona Chocolate Ariaga Noire, salted caramel and marshmallow

The squid ink éclair filled with smoked salmon mousse is almost too beautiful to eat, while the canelé with a caramelised shell and custardy interior comes with choirs of angels singing gratis. Add to that exclusive tea blends and the tranquility of the setting, and you have an unforgettable afternoon. For a further dash of extravagance, add a bottle of the new, vibrant L’Ormarins Private Cuvée Cap Classique – with tangy and refreshing flavours of lemon and marmalade. THE WERF RESTAURANT Best for: Seasonally themed menus Why we love it: The drive through the picturesque Banhoek Valley, outside Stellenbosch, sets the tone for the arrival at Boschendal. Rolling lawns, lavender-filled gardens and sweet-smelling citrus trees invite you toward the unpretentious, forward-thinking winery that’s become a lifestyle destination in its own right. Surrounded by Cape fynbos vegetation and mountains, The Werf Restaurant is a great place for friends and family to convene for a long lunch or dinner in a laidback environment. Casually arranged wildflowers dot the space, offering a hint of Boschendal’s local and seasonal ethos. The Werf Restaurant serves a sharing plates menu on which organic vegetables and sustainably sourced meat and fish take pride of place. Executive chef Allistaire Lawrence elevates humble foods by relying less on gimmicks, and more on simple preparation and quality ingredients. Two staple dishes stand out: The Duroc pork terrine with crispy pork skin, farm plums and toasted brioche, which vibes with the general mix of rustic and elegant, as well as the excellent braaied Angus Beef steak topped with caper noisette, crispy beef fat and smoked aubergine. The artful plating and play of flavours extend to

the vegetarian dishes, such as the garden beetroot and figs with walnuts, goat’s cheese espuma and wild rocket and the Werf Garden Summer Squash – tempura zucchini flowers with a poached farm-fresh egg. The food is honest and delicious, local but refined. The side of crispy fried potatoes with garlic emulsion is delightful. Only desserts are a little drab – the best end to a meal is the palatecleaning gin and lemon sorbet spiked with rosemary meringue, candied zest and shortbread. Bonus: The wines offer great value for money and some are suggested as pairings, but the cocktails made with fresh juices and infused syrups are equally solid. BEYOND Best for: Interior enthusiasts Why we love it: Unlike the commercialised tasting rooms and visitor’s centres you’ll find in Constantia, Buitenverwachting is cosy and intimate – the next best thing to having your own home in wine country. But it’s not just a pretty face: Buitenverwachting’s wines are as wonderful as the estate itself, and designforward restaurant Beyond is the brainchild of chef Peter Tempelhoff, Ashley Moss and Jennifer Hugé. Together, they’ve invented a gastronomic style like no other, blending the finest in-season produce and playing with juxtaposition – from wildly contrasting textures to unexpected flavour pairings. The result is positively ethereal. While the dining room has a distinct air of sophistication – light natural wood, floor-to-ceiling windows and dark-hued foliage that captures the beauty of the season – you might be tempted to imbibe alfresco. The porch is furnished with comfy wicker chairs that add to the relaxed vibe. Treat yourself to the unpredictable six-course tasting menu for a special occasion, which often surprised us by telling our eyes one thing but sending our taste buds a completely different message. You’ll argue over the stars of the menu with your date, but take it from us – top dishes include the game fish carpaccio accompanied by mixed quinoa salad, dashi braised daikon, aioli mayo and spicy umami dressing; the creamy burrata cheese with homemade furikake and the most vibrant basil pesto you’ve likely ever seen; and the 58 | w w w .s c en ein t h ec it y.c o .za | Winter 2 0 2 2

The most fashionable high tea in Joburg at Zioux Where will you find us most Saturday afternoons in our dreams? Tucking into a fabulous high tea at Zioux – a glossy champagne bar and cocktail lounge, dressed to kill in glimmering, low-light décor. FOOD & DRINK

Is there anything better than wiling away your afternoon eating fresh scones with clotted cream and jam, while sipping tea and champagne? Nope, we thought not. However, the classic formula for high teas has evolved from the likes of cucumber sandwiches and lemon drizzle cake to include sweet and savoury treats (and, of course, copious amounts of tea) with a fashionable twist. Zioux’s distinctive tea serves dishes to liven up your taste buds, including artistically-inclined sweetcorn mousse with passion fruit gel, a choux puff with coffee and tonka bean crémeux as well as a blood orange meringue with white chocolate mousse. The inspired pastries are utterly perfect and very sophisticated. Cherries are also given the French pastry treatment – you’ll be talking about the melt-in-your-mouth Cherry Lips bavarois for weeks after. As for the savoury bits, there’s a cured and smoked salmon blini with truffle mayo and pickles; a crispy prawn roll with garlic, ginger, spring onion, sesame seeds and crème fraîche; puffed masa flour with black beans, corn and charred tomato salsa; and wagyu sirloin katso in sticky sauce with cabbage and lime, among others. Head chef Moses Moloi is a protégé of Peter Tempelhoff, having worked under him in the role of head chef at Cape Town’s critically acclaimed FYN. His selection of treats is multi-sensory with a depth of flavour, and all are created using his signature culinary approach. Some of our favourites include the fragrant guava swiss roll with pistachio sponge, guava cream and hibiscus jelly; pecan macarons dressed up with tres leche and pecan nut ‘sand’; pillow-soft buttermilk chicken steamed buns with salsa macha and pickles; and truffled crayfish served on a buttery roll with just the right amount of mayo and seasonings. As with all of Zioux’s dishes, the seafood is remarkably fresh. Drinks wise, you have a choice of Toni Glass Collection loose leaf teas or six different specialty teas from The Tea Merchant: Early Grey & Bergamot, Jasmine Jazz (green tea dried over jasmine blossoms), Apple Crumble (rooibos-based with dried apple and cinnamon), Hot Cross Bun (chai-based with cinnamon and cloves), Unicorn Tea (dried butterfly pea flowers and lemongrass) and Black Forest Cherry (fruit-based with dried cherries and chocolate essence). The service is exceptional and everything down to the teacups and saucers exudes style. Our top tip? Upgrade to a bottle of Perrier-Jouët Grand Brut NV for the ultimate celebratory experience. After all, it’s not every day that you get to take part in a ritual worthy of her majesty. Every Saturday from 11h00 to 16h00 (bookings essential) Cost: R750 per person The MARC, corner of Maude Street & Rivonia Road, Sandton 010 594 5455 www.zioux.com

Winter is coming. Enter your cold-weather woes: Dryness, redness, irritation and flare-ups in all the wrong places. Yup, same! Proper skincare is a year-round commitment, but as the temperatures drop, it’s not just more moisturiser that’s needed. From switching up your cleanser to treatments and elixirs to nourish and protect all season, this is our editor’s guide to tackling winter skin based on your skin concern. LAMELLE SERRA CLEANSING GEL Repeat after us: You can take off your makeup without leaving your skin stripped of moisture. Leave it to Lamelle to make a soap, fragrance and paraben-free cleanser that does just that. Not only does this milky gel have a skin-soothing creamy texture and a featherweight froth, it also grips onto the day’s grime and excess oils to sweep them right off. We found that this no-fuss vegetable glycerin formula soothed our particularly parched, easily inflamed complexion. R230 from www.dermastore.co.za

EAU THERMALE AVÈNE XERACALM AD LIPID-REPLENISHING CLEANSING OIL Yes, a moisturising body butter can help thwart seasonal dryness, but don’t sleep on the transformative power of body washes. Eau Thermale Avène know what they’re doing when it comes to nutrientrich, nourishing formulas. This latest ultra-gentle launch has won over plenty of fans – it takes the best bits from basic body washes (the ability to deep clean) and the best bits from shower oils (the ability to hydrate). It’s the unsung hero we never knew we needed. R285 from Clicks, Dis-Chem and www.dermastore.co.za

PLACECOL MOISTURE HOLD THERAPY INTENSE MOISTURE RETENTION DAILY TREATMENT It’s hard to pinpoint exactly what this brand-new concentrated hydrating serum does when it seems to address a handful of skin concerns – like skin texture, a compromised skin barrier, and the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Full of hydrators and skin-restoring ingredients, it’s perfectly formulated for when transepidermal water loss increases. Our thirsty face literally drinks it up – we went through our first bottle in a month. This one is quite the overachiever. R330 from Foschini and www.takealot.com

SOTHYS HYDRA-SMOOTHING MASK If you’re looking to benefit from a little glow, this refining mask is also highly effective at transforming dull skin. Sothy’s supremely dreamy Hydra-Smoothing Mask flaunts hyaluronic acid and boletus mushroom extract to reveal a bright, smooth photo-ready face. That makes it an ideal treatment before a date, wedding or when you just want to smash the skin game. It says to leave it on for 10 to 15 minutes, but we’d recommend longer for maximum absorption. DIEGO DALLA PALMA PROFESSIONAL BODY BIOENERGY DRAINING ANTI-CELLULITE THALASSO SCRUB Is there anything better than unwinding with an indulgent winter bath routine? We think not. If summer has left you feeling slightly rough around the edges, this rejuvenating body scrub is all you need to get back to your polished self. Quite frankly, it does exactly what it says on the tub. Pink Himalayan salt is combined with black cumin and passion flower oils for a scrub that melts into the skin, revealing super-soft, radiant skin underneath. The result? A truly heavenly body. LAMELLE NOURISH REVITALISE EYE CREAM If you’ve got a reactive complexion, you’re wise to be a little wary of adding a new eye cream to your daily skincare roster. But when it comes to sensitive skin, Lamelle knows what’s up – and the fast-absorbing Nourish Revitalise Eye Cream is no exception. Loaded with vitamin C and peptides, this rich eye cream gently moisturises without leaving the skin greasy or overloaded. What’s more, the formula is free of anything aggressive, making it perfect for sensitives eyes. R695 from www.dermastore.co.za

SKINDERM HYDRATING REPAIR MASK For those with seriously sensitive skin, many face masks are simply out of the question. But this mask is formulated with konjac root powder, shea butter and other strengthening ingredients, so your skin barrier feels supported. We love the Skinderm Hydrating Repair Mask because it calms and repairs the complexion. Obsessed is an understatement! You can use it to lock in moisture while you snooze or as a 15-minute wash-off mask, depending on your preferences.

EXUVIANCE SOOTHING RECOVERY SERUM Sensitive skin can be caused by genetics and occur consistently. However, your skin can also become sensitive as a result of product application or certain environmental factors, including UV exposure and fluctuations in external temperature. Rich in peptides, this brand-new milky serum will balance pores and fortify upset skin. CREIGHTONS PINK GRAPEFRUIT DAILY FACE SCRUB Face scrubs are making a safe comeback. Especially during winter – when our skin is exposed to a harsher climate – gentle exfoliation is key to bringing out the best in our skin. This fruity exfoliant might be the most affordable option on this list, but that doesn’t mean it’s lacking. While it does sound like a delicious smoothie, it’s a cocktail for the skin thanks to its combination of pink grapefruit and finely-ground walnut shell. A great all-rounder that can be used every day.

EDITOR’S PICK: KÉRASTASE CHROMA ABSOLU COLLECTION A quick scroll through Instagram and you’re flooded with recommendations that will ‘change your life’. The question is, how do you know what’s really worth it in this age of hyperbole? We experience the beauty industry’s biggest new launches before they hit the shelves, but not all products make the cut into our own regimes. The Kérastase Chroma Absolu Collection for coloured hair, however, has earned our seal of approval – in other words, it’s truly amazing and will change (at least the beauty routine part of) your life. The new range is built around centella asiatica, an antioxidant-rich medicinal herb from Central Asia, and a trio of shine-enhancing acids – amino acids, lactic acid and tartaric acid. It’s all topped off with a sensual fragrance, with notes of neroli and orange blossom, to bring the salon experience into your bathroom. There are currently seven customised home products that are perfect for keeping that new colour thriving, regardless your colour-treated hair’s type or texture. We first apply the Bain Chroma Respect Shampoo, massaging the gel-like formula until it lathers just enough for us to know that it’s working hard to cleanse. After rinsing with cold water, we squeeze a

generous dollop of the Fondant Cica Chroma Conditioner and use it on the full length of our hair. Our thick, porous hair tends to get weighed down quickly, but that doesn’t happen after we use this conditioner. For an extra dose of hydration, we reach for the Masque Chroma Filler once a week, which only needs to be left in for five minutes after shampoo to soften, boost shine and protect colour. Once or twice a month, in place of the conditioner or mask, we turn to the Soin Acide Chroma Gloss – a high-shine, cuticlesealing gloss treatment that transforms into a lovely, milky consistency on contact with water. For the final step, we spray the Sérum Chroma Thermique, a heat protectant with frizz-fighting capabilities that protects at temperatures up to 450 degrees. The first few weeks of winter might be a little dull, but our hair certainly isn’t. Prepare to be your most vibrant with this ultimate colour-care solution that deserves to take over your entire haircare routine! NUXE RÊVE DE MIEL GENTLE SHAMPOO BAR Since winter is all about cocooning and self-care, why not take advantage of the next few months? Give your mane some extra love with this newbie that moisturises like no other while also detangling the hair. We understand that a shampoo bar probably isn’t the first thing you’d reach for if you have damaged hair, but this bar works for every hair type and texture using Provence honey and organic camelina oil. The supremely nourishing formula is silicone and sulphate-free, yet it still produces a noticeably light, fluffy lather. But we’d be remiss not to mention the appetitewhetting Rêve de Miel honey scent, one of our favourites of all time – it will have everyone asking what perfume you’re wearing. After a week of use, this hydrating bar helped reset and deep clean both our hair and scalp for consistently glossy, manageable hair. MOROCCANOIL BLONDE PERFECTING PURPLE CONDITIONER Blondes have more fun, but that fun doesn’t last long! Icy cool tones such as blonde, platinum, silver and grey are notorious for being the hardest colours to maintain. Over time, such shades can turn yellow and brassy. This supercharged purple conditioner, tinged with deep violet pigments, is a new staple in Moroccanoil’s Blonde Perfecting line. It starts neutralising unwanted yellow and orange tones after just one use, while drenching brittle hair with antioxidant-rich argan oil. A special ArganID technology dives deep into fragile bleached strands for a strengthening boost, so you can also expect great moisture and shine. Plus, it’s designed for blondes and lightened brunettes alike – it’s a nice boost for bringing highlights out to lustrous effect. Start by using it once a week to keep hair colour vivid and only build up if needed. R495 from Splush, www.retailbox.co.za and select salons

JOHN FRIEDA HYDRATE & RECHARGE DEEP SOAK MASQUE No matter your hair type, one thing’s for sure – in winter, we could all benefit from taking the time to hair mask one a week. If you’ve tried the Hydrate & Recharge Shampoo and Conditioner from John Frieda, you’ll already know this brand is sent from the haircare gods. As an extra treat, this intensive hair treatment will return your dry, damaged strands to their healthy glory. Thick and buttery, it features a high-performing formula packed with drops containing monoi oil and keratin, meaning your locks will be left significantly less frizzy. Your hair will feel better just looking at this tub! Smooth this on for a mere two to three minutes and it can make a big, shiny difference to your crowning glory. It’s best used with the shampoo and conditioner to transform your hair in one application, but is also brilliant on its own. The large pot also goes a long way. R136 from Clicks
