LETTER

n the face of an existential publishing crisis, one (me, probably) could argue that magazines are so much more than just a vehicle to flog a bottle of champagne or a handbag – although there’s no shame in that. Like it has for many, this year has been a fascinating time for me – the ups and downs, the emotional highs and lows – and now it’s time to look forward. Enter Scene in the City, an exciting new addition to the world of lifestyle. Brought to you by an all-female team, our premiere publication offers an exhaustive overview of everything the city of Johannesburg and beyond has to offer in terms of food and drink, style and beauty as well as travel and leisure. Together with managing director Deborah Bailey – a marketing specialist in the hospitality and retail industries as well as an avid traveller and golfer, recipe developer and cookbook author – and senior graphic designer Xoliswa Mayapi whose skills favour a simple, clean and elegant aesthetic, I can assure you that our bimonthly magazine will make sure you’re kept up to date on all the latest trends. From the latest on the local food scene to restaurant reviews, chef interviews and food-trend coverage, food and drink is our core focus. Our style and beauty pages feature sophisticated, fashion-forward content and cover fashion, beauty, wellbeing and how to travel in style, while our travel and leisure section provides a peek inside the exclusive world of high society and reveals the best the city has to offer. We bring the best of Joburg to the best of Joburg. Scene in the City knows the pulse of the City of Gold. Now that we’ve met formally, make yourself a cup of tea – or pour yourself a glass of wine – and cosy up with your copy of our very first issue. Afterwards, we’d love it if you’d follow us on Facebook and Instagram @sceneinthecity_sa.

EDITOR’S PICK:

ETHOS RESTAURANT

Dying to get away? Stepping into this Morningside hotspot will make you feel as though you’re dining outdoors during high season on the coast of Greece. They’ve mastered the art of making us feel like we’re on holiday in both their cuisine and overall vibes. The sleek, contemporary space – featuring the use of wood, brass, terrazzo, marble, ceramic tiles and different textiles as well as a big olive tree in the middle of the restaurant – meticulously lays out the Mediterranean story and is an excellent foil for the colourful dishes. The artful menu changes with the seasons: The octopus carpaccio with pickled asparagus, pepper emulsion, salsa verde and fried chickpeas as well as the Tuscan chicken with Tuscan sauce, Grana Padana, sundried tomato and edamame beans are both beautiful creations in an ongoing succession of unusual options from the starters section. Most diners here, however, seem to be drawn to the restaurant for the chef’s more distinctive creations. The crayfish moussaka is an unorthodox marriage of supremely tender and sweet crayfish, aubergine, baby marrow, potato, mozzarella cheese and creamy bisque that turns out to be truly inspired. In the tomato and mozzarella tortellini, a decadent, creamy pine nut and sage crème surrounds pillowy-soft tomato-infused pasta filled with marinated mozzarella, balsamic pearls, smoky tomato essence and Parmesan foam that drinks up some of that rich flavour. Though the food is of the same calibre as top fine-dining destinations, it doesn’t come across nearly as buttoned up. While a good chunk of the dishes live up to the setting, many others – the basic iced platters of raw oysters, the rump with mushroom purée – seem far better suited for a far more casual meal. The desserts come elaborately plated and are almost too gorgeous to eat, such as the ‘coconut’ filled with caramelia cremeux, which you get by cracking open its hardshell meringue and dark chocolate exterior. What’s more, the bartenders serve up ’gram-worthy drinks like our favourites, The Berry Finest made with Tanqueray, berry blend reduction and dry vermouth generously topped with dried flowers as well as the All My Peaches; a blend of Belvedere Peach Nectar, macadamia nut milk, orgeat and a touch of Aperol that makes for the perfect summer drink. POMODORO

GUILT & CO

Nestled in Morningside Shopping Centre and sitting somewhere between an Italian trattoria and Parisian bistro, you’ve probably just popped your head into Pomodoro Ristorante for a cheeky glass of vino on your way home. But, once the aroma of ultra-delicious Italian cuisine hits you, you may as well relinquish your evening plans. At the heart of the menu, pasta – cooked up by chef-owner Stefano Mas – goes back to basics. Our favourites are the gnocchi with meltingly soft potato dumplings in a silky gorgonzola sauce spiked with lots of walnuts as well as the melt-in-your-mouth homemade egg tagliatelle with a creamy porcini mushroom, saffron and whisky sauce. For the pizzas, the dough is left to rise and mature for just the right amount of time so that it swells into a soft and fluffy yet crispy base. The menu also features some of Italy’s finest fish and meat dishes in which subtle creativity and high-end dining are the name of the game, including lightly crumbed Falklands calamari tubes and tentacles and pan-fried chicken breast in a mushroom and truffle sauce. Given we aren’t here for dancing, we’re not disappointed to find ourselves in a large, airy, revamped dining room.

Looking to brighten up your social media feed or indulge your inner girliness? Guilt & Co is the perfect hangout spot for a fun and relaxing catch-up session with the girls. Its pretty pink and leafy green interior checks all the visual boxes, as does the delicious grazing menu. Moët & Chandon mimosas are optional, but always welcomed. The menu boasts a variety of dreamy breakfasts such as Belgian waffles topped with summer berries and whipped vanilla cream, eggs in a ‘basket’ filled with creamy mushrooms, strawberry flapjacks served with crispy bacon and mascarpone cheese as well as salmon royale – a toasted bagel topped with smoked salmon trout, a poached egg and roasted asparagus, drizzled with hollandaise sauce. To drink, there’s a perfectly sweet pink latte and a creamy vanilla coffee to unleash your inner princess If your appreciation for a well-constructed deli sandwich or salad holds as much significance as your love of plush pastel furnishings, order the panini with gypsy ham, mature white cheddar cheese, cherry tomatoes and pickles, or the smoked salmon trout salad with greens, cherry tomatoes, red onion, avocado and cream cheese.

LA PARADA PARKHURST

Soak up the sociable vibe of Spanish eating at the brand-new La Parada tapas and cocktail bar in Parkhurst. Opened out onto the buzz of 4th Avenue, it feels like a party most nights with a menu that captures the boisterous spirit of authentic tapasstyle dining. There’s something about the endlessly appetising small plates complemented by a tempting list of cocktails that make them the most sociable of foods. They’re ideal for sharing (or, if you’d prefer not to, easy to order extra) and the best part is, you don’t have to commit to one cuisine. Dive in and make a night of it: Sip, snack, repeat. The menu offers newwave takes on the classics and some serious innovation – but playful inventiveness never gets in the way of flavour. Check out the fried calamari with aioli and lemon, seared tuna tataki with sesame seeds and avocado mousse, grilled cheese with gypsy ham and truffle aioli as well as the beef rib eye with chilli pea purée & truffle potato crisps with a round of Fizz Pom or Butterfly Effect cocktails. If you’re vegetarian, order the smoked exotic tomatoes with Caciotta cheese and garlic ciabatta croutins or the whole Peppadews filled with cream cheese and basil aioli in multiple. WASABI

BELLAGIO

If you love sushi so much you could eat it for breakfast, lunch and dinner, head to Wasabi Restaurant. Elegant, no-nonsense sushi and grills are served in a soothing and minimal space: The décor seeks to deviate from the stereotypical market patio umbrellas and bonsai trees associated with oriental design. Grab a table on the outdoor restaurant piazza and take your pick from the vast menu, which includes everything from creamy rock shrimp California rolls and salmon roses topped with thick crème fraîche and berry reduction, to sesame seed crusted seared bigeye tuna and a fillet on the bone flambéed with cognac at your table. No matter what you order, it’s difficult to go wrong. The Dragon Roll with Scottish salmon, tempura prawn and sticky sweet Yakitori sauce is delicious, as is the Pepper Me Poké, where avocado, cream cheese and sushi rice are hidden under generous servings of flavourful black pepper rubbed tuna. The Forest Nigiri – salmon, prawn and avocado nigiri made with camembert infused rice, plum and kewpie mayo – is equally deserving of praise. The sushi is made even better with an order of Hong Kong Pears stuffed with duck, prawn and chicken.

If you fancy spoiling someone special with lashings of Illovo class, we suggest splashing some serious cash at Bellagio. It’s a formal place with white tablecloths, decorous service and tables out front for alfresco carousing. Surrounded by an elegant décor, the menu offers the best of the ocean’s bounty and spotlights owner Louise Castle’s forward-thinking approach to coastal inspired fare. Prosecco and oysters are a perfect pairing and there may be no better place to indulge than this eatery, where you’ll find them in abundance. The use of fresh, authentic ingredients can be detected in every bite of crave-worthy starters such as chargrilled calamari served with an avocado, tomato and chilli salsa or marinated roasted prawns with a creamy feta, chive and garlic sauce and crusty ciabatta. The exquisite main menu is dotted with Mediterranean touches, and there are plenty of big-ticket items on offer – think seared salmon marinated in soya, chilli, ginger, honey and orange; seared pepper-crusted tuna with teriyaki; and grilled langoustines with garlic and lemon butter. Of course, there are cheat-day-worthy treats like the crab capellini and smoked salmon spaghettini too.

RIBS & BURGERS

VILLA BIANCA

There’s a reason why meat-lovers are flocking to this casual diner at the brand spanking new Neighbourhood Square social, retail and leisure hub. There’s plenty of room, plenty of light and plenty of good vibes. Overall, life has many splendours and the grilled meats here are no exception – from the mouthwateringly beautiful beef ribs to the Mighty Bacon & Cheddar Burger that’s lusted over by thousands. Ribs & Burgers aims to bring some of the best succulent stacks and juicy racks to Joburg. It aims, and oh boy does it deliver. With tasty sides and signature ‘thickshakes’, we’re advised to tell you that it’s okay to let the smoky aromas guide you. When you order the Mighty King Rib, you’ll receive a rack with a caramelised, sticky crust. The joint has a secret weapon that makes their burgers stand out too: The patties are cooked medium rare to ensure maximum juiciness, whether you’re biting into the simple Old School Cheese or The Aussie with the lot. Next-level veggie burgers are available too – try the Veggie Stack with mushroom, Spanish onion, halloumi, crispy onion rings and aioli. Finish off the meal with a thick and frosty Vanilla Malt Biscuit or Salted Caramel milkshake.

This modest Mediterranean cuisine and sushi restaurant comes from Arthur Cavallineas and family – the same folks who brought us FireRoom. Styled as a casual neighbourhood hangout, the space at Villa Bianca is open and modern, and the shopfront opens up onto the road, lending a fitting Mediterranean al fresco vibe. Inside, the space bears a simple motif; nothing too fancy but sufficiently stylish nonetheless. The menu features plenty of coastal fare-centric sharing plates as well as cocktails and mocktails crafted from seasonal, exotic produce and botanicals, like the Cucumber Collins and Berry Mojito. Known for its selection of quality seafood, the gourmet prawns served with lemon butter, garlic butter or peri peri sauce is a popular choice, as is the Parma Ham Salmon; Scottish salmon wrapped in Parma ham, rice and Japanese stir-fry vegetables. Another highlight is the meat, from the ginormous 850g tomahawk to the Lindt Chilli Chocolate Fillet topped with chilli chocolate reduction, served with fettucine, butter and sage. If you’ve got un unrelenting sweet tooth, satiate your cravings with the pure chocolaty decadence Chocolate Volcano soufflé for dessert.

FOOD & DRINK

When it comes to perfectly pairing two of the greatest things in life – dessert and wine – the secret is to consider wine as an ingredient. Wine adds the ‘extra’ – it enhances tastes, creating an entirely new flavour profile. In general, as the colours of the dessert get darker, the wine gets darker. Take a look at these tasty pairings for an incredible end (or start) to a memorable evening.

CHOCOLATE MOUSSE

STRAWBERRY SHORTCAKE

The trick is to balance the bitterness of the chocolate with the sweetness of the wine

The trick is to create pairing harmony with just a touch of residual sugar

Wine pairing: Journey’s End V3 Shiraz 2017. Frankly, if you don’t have a dessert ready, a bottle of this shiraz can be perfect all on its own! With its expressive aromatic delivery of redcurrants and violets with white pepper and notes of dried coriander, this wine offers some sweetness without being too overpowering. Pairing chocolate mousse with it is like eating a chocolate-covered strawberry, but with more sparkle – think chocolate and lightning bolts of fruit and spice plus great natural acidity and a silky, long-lasting finish from the wine. It’s best drunk now and until 2029.

Wine pairing: Spier Méthode Cap Classique Brut 2017. With a fresh, clean nose, a balanced mouthfeel, good acidity and exuberant bubbles that culminate in a lively aftertaste, this is a crisp, mouth-puckering sparkler that adds notes of apples and biscuits. You can serve it with a full English or continental breakfast or enjoy it on its own as a festive welcome drink or toast. But what happens after you’ve exhausted the same old tired combinations? It’s time to get unique and add sparkling fireworks to strawberry shortcake – a creamy classic dessert.

Why it works: The sweetness of the wine balances the bittersweet taste and the smooth, airy, almost foamy texture of the dessert, creating the perfect harmony between their contrasting tastes. The wafting sweet spice aromas in this shiraz also cut straight through the heavy creaminess in chocolate mousse, while adding sharp texture and notes of candied fruit and red flowers. We find that this wine works particularly well with rich, bitter dark chocolate mousse made with semisweet or bittersweet chocolate, preferably 70% cacao. Around R180 from your local bottle store

Why it works: The best wine for strawberry shortcake is one that matches its sweetness levels. The acidic bite that comes from this MCC slices right through the shortcake and whipped cream in the strawberry-laden classic without overwhelming the delicate cake and rich cream that makes it so addictive. Fresh fruit contributes sweet and tart elements in the dessert and the notes tree fruit in the wine beautifully complement the fresh strawberry flavour. Plus, the wine adds a biscuity note that tastes incredible with this sweet treat’s already creamy ingredients. Around R145 from your local bottle store

LEMON CAKE

WHITE CHOCOLATE

The trick is to match the sweet and the tart note for note

The trick is to ensure that the wine is just as sweet as the chocolate

Wine pairing: Tokara Chardonnay 2018. The creamy addition of savoury oak tones from this wine to the bracing flavours in moist, sweet, buttery lemon cake loaded with fresh lemon is a truly complementary parallel. Many modern drinkers who’ve had one too many butter bombs – oaked chardonnays that are rich, full-bodied and have additional flavours of sweet vanilla, butter and even caramel from the oak – may find this pairing quite polarising and not appreciate this style. However, we think this layered, complex chardonnay’s versatility is one of its greatest strengths.

Wine pairing: La Motte Sauvignon Blanc 2018. While its sumptuous, full palate and refreshing character makes it a refreshing aperitif, the intricacy of this vintage brings sophistication and ensures versatility. This wine offers abundant gooseberry flavours, refreshing lemon and notes of tropical fruit with a creamy, well-rounded palate that lingers with a fresh acidity. Take a sip of it after a bite of buttery white chocolate and suddenly you’ll swear you’re tucking into a fruit cream mousse. It’s also perfect to pair with the creamy nuances of citrus-infused white chocolate.

Why it works: The fresh pineapple, grapefruit and lime zest notes with a hint of brioche and toasted almonds in the wine bring out even more zip from the bright, fresh lemon flavour and deeply underlying lemon essence of the dessert. This chardonnay is clear and bright with a hint of green in colour, with a silky palate and a tangy finish from the fruit and acid combination. The buttery oak of the wine is also a natural companion to lemon cake fillings and frostings such as lemon, strawberry or almond buttercream, raspberry frosting, banana mousse and lemon curd. Around R110 from your local bottle store

16 | w w w.s c en ein t h ec it y.c o.za | October/November 2 0 2 0

Why it works: Although white chocolate isn’t technically a ‘true’ chocolate because it doesn’t contain cacao, this chocolate-like sweet is a shockingly good pairing with this sauvignon blanc – especially for chocolate and wine pairing disbelievers. The wine’s rich, fruity aromas and juicy finish take the understated balance of white chocolate and add a layer of fruit that doesn’t overpower, balancing the subtle sweetness with decadently fruity notes. Try it with a heavenly white chocolate dessert like white chocolate truffles, white chocolate mousse or white chocolate berry cheesecake. Around R89 from your local bottle store

BLOOM COFFEE

FATHER COFFEE

4TH AVENUE COFFEE ROASTERS

Our go-to order: Cappuccino (R25) with an extra shot (R5) One of Joburg’s most buzz-worthy coffee shops, Bloom Coffee has been doing ripper coffees in cute turquoise takeaway cups since it opened last year. Components are seasonal, so the coffee here evolves constantly, but it always has great flavour, body and balance. Whether you order an espresso or a caffe latte, you can look forward to a sip that’s smooth and full of flavour with no bitterness – think berries on the front, a syrupy body, hints of nut and a finish of dark chocolate. Plus, the service is ultra-friendly and never snobby, and the takeaway brekkies are ace – try the generously topped avo and poached egg on toast. PS: Bloom Coffee has just opened an already thriving drive-thru coffee shop! Simply preorder via WhatsApp to skip the wait and collect your coffee and pastry curbside.

Our go-to order: Single cortado (R22) This place is a well-oiled machine: Slick interiors and fast-paced service is the name of the game at Father Coffee. It’s more of a stop-and-hop sort of joint, but there’s seating space should you fancy some quiet time with your cup and a book. There’s a counter heaving with tasty treats – the muchphotographed Snickers Cruffin piped full of caramel peanut butter créme and topped with a chunk of Snickers, is a heavenly, gooey mess to eat – but, most importantly, the coffee makes a near-perfect ristretto. For breakfast, order the eggs and soldiers with a sweet and fruity Cold Brew Bottle.

Our go-to order: Café au lait (R35) Serving high-quality, hand-roasted Arabica coffee from a pleasingly simple menu, the team at 4th Avenue Coffee Roasters also sell beans for at-home coffee making on those weekends when you just can’t drag yourself out of bed for one of their freshly-brewed cups. The light, laidback interior in addition to the complex, full-bodied coffee makes this coffee shop, on the popular Parkhurst stretch from which it takes its name, easily one of the best in Joburg. Order a red cappuccino whilst you enjoy the creamy mushrooms and Parmesan on toast (trust us, it’s scrumptious).

SÉSAME CAFÉ

CRAFT COFFEE

HELLO LOVE

Our go-to order: Double shot flat white (R29) with almond milk (R9) The sunny courtyard is beautiful, but Sésame Café is about more than Instagrammable interiors – these guys pump out rich, gentle and very well-made coffee. Those who work in Rosebank CBD know this too, so there’s usually a small line snaking out around the curbside hatch. Go classic with a cappuccino or macchiato, or opt for a flavoured Espresso Iceberg – a cold coffee that makes for a classic summer treat. The café also makes mind-blowing chocolate croissants that are extra flaky and buttery filled with rich chocolate and drizzled with more chocolate. For a snack attack, there are extra cheesy classic toasties.

Our go-to order: Mocha (R35) Real coffee aficionados will love Craft Coffee: It offers artisan coffee made with beans that are ethically and traceably sourced. A tiny and quiet gem where you’re immediately transported away from the hustle of Joburg, at this minimalistic coffee shop you can relax with your specialty brew with the morning paper. And did we mention the selection of milks? Yay for dairy-free diners! While you’re here, start your morning off on the right foot with a perfect plate of eggs benedict – toasted ciabatta topped with poached eggs, crispy bacon and a drizzle of hollandaise sauce.

Our go-to order: Nutty Butter Cappuccino (R30) Less a coffee shop, more full-blown coffee institution, indie coffee haunt Hello Love is rarely without a queue, and for a good reason. Knowledgeable staff pull some of the best dirty chai lattes in the city – not just a pretty face, then, but a brilliant place for a caffeine hit. The house blend is super-smooth and rich, but there’s also a charcoal latte, which tastes like a very delicious vanilla almond milk latte, and a super latte – made with beetroot, chuga cocoa, matcha, rooibos, sweet potato and turmeric. To eat, get the The Talibabes bagel; a collision of smoked salmon, cream cheese and pickles.

BROOKLYN BROTHERS As American as American eating gets, hip urban diner Brooklyn Brothers fulfills a very urgent need, providing craveable comfort food. Their first-ever virtual kitchen in Melrose Arch boasts an enormously talented kitchen staff – the food here is fresh, hot and on-point. Choice is the name of the game: On offer is a wide range of fryer and grill-top classics such as burgers, buffalo style chicken wings and hand-crafted shakes. Hits from the massive menu include the deep-fried cauli-wings tossed in cajun spice, indulgent jalapeño poppers filled with a cheesy mixture and the aptly named The Firehouse burger: A 100% pure beef patty snuggled between two buns and crowned with green chilli relish, pickled

jalapeños and sour cream. Of the top-notch burgers, another standout is The Mobster; a moist chicken breast piled with grilled mushroom, caramelised red onion and a slice of emmental cheese for good measure. The list of specialty shakes appeals to the sweet tooth in all of us. We’re partial to the Zoo Biscuit blended with Zoo Biscuits, berry compote and ice cream, topped with whipped cream – it’s creamy, rich and enough for two people to split. PIZA E VINO With amazing delis, classic red sauce joints and highend purveyors of pasta, Joburg is no slacker when it comes to Italian food. But it’s Piza e Vino’s pizza game that shines the brightest. However you slice it, these pizzas are the upper crust – the bases here have just enough structural integrity to get the food to your mouth without dropping in your lap. The Melrose Arch is your mouth’s new best friend: A thin, charred base all covered in melted mozzarella and big puddles of feta and spiced up with chicken, cherry tomatoes, avocado, coriander and honey. It’s soft and rich and runny and crunchy and salty and sweet, and if you’re anything like us, you’ll fight a fiend over the last piece … and then you’ll order a second serve!

The Porky the Pig – topped with salami, pepperconi, bacon, caramelised onion, feta and fresh basil – also hits all the right flavour zones on your tongue (we swear you won’t even miss the mozzarella). There’s no denying meat-free dining doesn’t get much better than a classic margherita, but here they add marinated zucchini ribbons, mushrooms, green peppers, onion, Parmesan and balsamic reduction on the Valentino to boost both the vitamin and flavour factor. SOUL SOUVLAKI Enjoying the tastes of the Cyclades from the comfort of your couch may be easier than you thought. Wealthy in aromas, flavours and influences, the Greek street food at Soul Souvlaki ranges from meze and main meals to souvlaki and gyros. The kitchen serves up traditional Hellenic sunshine in the shape of mixed olives and house-made tzatziki dip served with warm pita bread, rocket salad made with pure technique, succulent chicken sticks, skinny lamb chops … all ready to enjoy alongside a dry rosé or ouzo-based cocktail. The flavours may be reassuringly authentic, but the presentation is progressive. The menu is stuffed with luxurious flavour combos, but nothing beats the ‘in the hand’ souvlaki rolled in a warm pita – we can’t get enough of the classic, juicy bifteki in pita (beef patty with feta, chilli and herbs) and the insanely good grilled giant mushroom in pita with a generous layer of tzatziki. You can also enjoy a Greek coffee before enjoying delicious, great-value meze combos like the vegetarian option consisting of grilled giant mushrooms, grilled halloumi, grilled chilli feta, dolmades, potato wedges, aegean slaw, mixed olives, pita breads and your choice of two dips. LOVE AT FIRST

BURGER

Ribs & Burgers – the beloved Aussie chain in South Africa

Creative burgers, eight-hour slow-cooked ribs and a unique basting sauce – is it any wonder Ribs & Burgers’ new Linksfield outpost is its fourth in South Africa? Beyond its obviously mouthwatering namesakes, they sling fresh wraps and bowls and shake up creative ‘thickshakes’ like a Milo and salted caramel milkshake. Ernesto Ferreira, partner of Ribs & Burgers South Africa, tells us more. In brief, tell us about Ribs & Burgers’ roots. The first restaurant opened in Neutral Bay, Sydney. It was conceptualised by Bradley Michaels and Chad Rhame, both South African expats who saw a gap in the Aussie market to bring a true South African basted ribs and burgers offering into the market in 2011. Since then, they’ve grown in every major city in Australia. Ribs & Burgers opened in South Africa at Menlyn Maine in 2016 through another partnership arrangement. 26 | w w w.s c en ein t h ec it y.c o.za | October/November 2 0 2 0

What made you bring this well-loved Australian brand to South Africa? Bradley and I had worked together very closely together on brands such as Planet Hollywood and Meat & Wine Company. He contacted me after learning that I’d taken a sabbatical, after growing Nando’s in 15 different countries over a period of 14 years, to ask if I’d like to work together again as he believed in the Ribs & Burgers brand. I then travelled to Australia and the brand presented a huge opportunity to the South African market for several reasons, including fresh food made in a casual service environment, a large focus on meat both on and off the bone, open kitchens to provide the theatre and engagement with consumers as well as value through great pricing.

Currently, how many Ribs & Burgers stores are there in South Africa? There are currently four stores – Menlyn Maine in Menlyn, The MARC in Sandton, Nicolway in Bryanston and the newly opened Neighbourhood Square in Linksfield.

Are there plans in the pipeline to open any more stores in the near future? Absolutely. We’d would like to get to 12 Gauteng based restaurants in the next 24 months.

Explain how Ribs & Burgers fills a gap in the market on Joburg’s restaurant scene. We believe that from a consumer facing point of view, you rarely find a restaurant so focused on high-quality ingredients made fast, fresh and in front of you.

Linksfield is your newest store. What would you say gives this store an edge? Investec built a fantastic property from an aesthetic point of view, with ease of access and a great mix of tenants.

How would you describe the Ribs & Burgers offering in three words? Fresh, variety, comfort. What’s your best-selling item on the menu? Burgers are our most popular item, but our ribs have a large following too. In our opinion, we make the best wraps in South Africa! Overall, our menu is broad and each of its segments have started generating their own following, which we find very encouraging.

Your personal favourite meal? Baby back ribs and a side of apple, cabbage and walnut slaw, with a cookies and cream milkshake.

Tell us about your latest menu item launch. We’ve just launched a knife and fork section with a small selection of steaks. We want to ensure that we capture the market with up-to-date offerings. www.ribsandburgers.com/za 27 | www. sc e ne i nt he c i t y . c o. z a | O c to b e r / N o v e mb e r 2 0 2 0

Wait, you need this! What’s new on our editor’s beauty desk A new season calls for a fresh set of beauty products, especially when that season is spring. From mix and match scents to a moisturiser that’s a non-invasive alternative to Botox, these are the brand-spanking-new products that are bringing us pure joy right now. We can’t and won’t shut up about them – grab them before they sell out this month!

While some beauty brands’ claims about being natural or organic is arguably getting more opaque, there’s zero ambiguity about what it takes to bear our editor’s ‘best of clean beauty’ seal. The NUXE BIO Organic range walks the walk when it comes to transparency, offering highly efficacious, plant-based products that take sustainability seriously. The range has all the ingredients you want – and none of the ones you don’t. On average, the products contain 99% natural-origin ingredients and over 52% organic ingredients, such as botanical oils and natural-origin scents. What’s more, the socially responsible aspect of the range is considered at each step of the life cycle, from formula to packaging to recycling. So, not only will these products improve your complexion, but your carbon footprint too. The range includes a serum, face care, eye care, a night oil, a cleanser, masks and a body oil. Our top pick is the Ultimate Night Recovery Oil.

What’s in the bottle is nearly as pure as it gets: Rice oil extract combined with organic botanical oils (avocado, sesame, jojoba and macadamia). Plus, a little goes a long way with this bottle, so it will last you a long time too. We’re also huge fans of the Radiance Detox Mask – thanks to sesame seed oil and citrus extract, skin will be left looking and feeling smooth post-rinse and beyond. To get the rest of your body in on the hydrating action, try the Replenishing Nourishing Body Oil; an iridescent oil with hazelnut, sesame, safflower and sunflower oils that melts into the skin within 30 seconds and has a delicate orange flower scent that makes you smell fresh-out-the-shower, all day long. The best part about the range is that it eliminates gender stereotypes, so couples can adopt an ecological attitude by sharing their skincare. It’s guaranteed to save space in the bathroom! CLAIRE HILL S8-28 ANTI-AGEING MOISTURISER

This nourishing moisturiser from Claire Hill, a science-based skincare company from Australia, is a non-invasive alternative to Botox (and in chic packaging no less). We love the freeradical fighter for its texture – satiny and neither too thick nor too matte – which plays nice under makeup. Luxurious and rich in natural oils, this moisturiser keeps it simple yet effective, assuming you’re looking to smooth away fine lines by naturally relaxing your facial muscles in a light, smoothing lotion. It feels fabulous going on and your skin will feel fabulous hours later too, as it feeds the skin with radiance-reviving nutrients. Use it for several weeks and you’ll start getting compliments on your radiant skin. R1,475 from www.clairehill.co.za

BEAUCIENCE BOTANICALS EYE RESQUE GEL

When it comes to ageing, prevention is better than cure, which is why it’s imperative you start caring for those eyes ASAP. Packed with eye-opening ingredients like organic green tea, this non-sticky, quickly absorbed gel helps you perk up those peepers and fake a full night’s rest. Rather than dropping a hefty load of cash on a super-luxe eye cream, cop this blend of natural ingredients, organic oils and all-natural peptide and essential oils that gently moisturises without leaving the skin greasy or overloaded. Not only does it re-energise tired eyes and protect them against future damage, it also helps neutralise blue and purple tones under your eyes, making it a great pick for dark circles too. BERDOUES COLLECTION GRANDS CRUS MIX & MATCH - SUNRISE BEACH & BONDI BEACH Wearing just one perfume can be boring. Thankfully, French perfume house Berdoues has launched a summer collection of mix and match fragrances inspired by the most beautiful beaches in the world, which can be worn individually or combined. The Sunrise Beach and Bondi Beach perfumes are both energised scents that bottle up the season for a much-needed seasonal refresh. Sunrise Beach could only be described as sunny and exotic with notes of tangerine, davana and coconut, while Bondi Beach is salty and sunny made indefinitely more interesting with notes of bergamot, lemon, neroli and vanilla. 5 MINK POT OF GLOW LUMINIZING PUDDING

UNIQBROWS GROWTH SERUM

Glowy skin, we’re coming for ya! Lock in all your hard work before blending your foundation into airbrushed perfection with this natural-based, cruelty-free glowenhancing product. It can be used as a daily moisturiser, mixed into foundation, as a highlight for a soft, natural dew or – our favourite – as a treat to create the silkysmooth canvas your skin needs for flawless foundation application. If you want to hide pores, soak up oil and refine your skin texture, this multi-purpose product has got your back. A pea-sized amount is enough to prep your whole face for foundation and the scent is addictive – think a minty, chocolatey Mint Frappuccino that will have you feeling all types of nostalgia.

Eyebrows speak louder than words. Lash and brow serums can really get up there in terms of price, but this one by brow queen Unaiza Suliman works better than serums twice as expensive in our opinion. It’s packed with potent ingredients like vitamins B5 and B7 and amino acids that stimulate the hair follicles while feeding them with all the nutrients they need to grow thicker, longer hair. Swipe this product on the base of your lashes (like you would liquid eyeliner) and your brows twice a day, and the lightweight formula dries down and gets to work ASAP. The formula helps to hydrate even the most brittle of lashes and, best of all, you don’t have to worry about it irritating

7 AZANA SPA MICELLAR WATER - COCONUT & HYALURONIC ACID Just call it the minimalist’s skin cure-all. Like actual water, this micellar water by The Cape Town Toiletry Company can do it all. Enriched with coconut extract for hydration and radiance as well as hyaluronic acid to cleanse, it’s a great makeup remover – even liquid lipstick and waterproof mascara that doesn’t budget for anything. Our favourite way to use it is by squirting some on a cotton pad in the morning and using it to refresh our skin. We also love using it as a second cleanser in the evening on days that we wear foundation, just to catch anything we missed. Your face will feel oh-so-soft, all of the day’s makeup and buildup will be gone and you’ll be left with the tropical fragrance of fresh coconuts. R89.95 from Dis-Chem

yourself 3 beauty treatments to get you ready for spring

After battling months of brutal winter in Joburg, we’re beyond ready to throw on some strappy sandals and a flippy skirt and put our best face – and body – forward. To prep for spring from head to toe, we put three beauty treatments to the test, including a safe tanning treatment and a facial that promises full restoration. The sunny season has never looked – or felt – so good.

BABOR CLASSIC FACIAL A day in Sandton might be brilliant for shopping, but it’s hardly good for the soul. Luckily, tucked away in a quiet apartment building in Sandhurst is the calming haven of Life Lux Spa – a luxurious subterranean spa perfectly positioned as an alternative to the mayhem on the surrounding streets. A cosy haven of remedies and relaxation, the space is full-on interiors inspo, with a new level of gorgeousness at every turn. Whether you’re tired or rundown or merely in need of a skin treat, the Babor Classic Facial (R730) is the perfect way to make yourself look and feel much better. Using top-quality Babor professional skincare products made in Germany, this facial is utterly pampering – you’ll fall asleep in the first few minutes! We found it to be a really good all-rounder, with deep cleansing, toning, stimulating and extractions where needed. It’s also results-driven, so our skin looked lifted, clearer and smooth and wasn’t drenched in heavy product. You won’t leave feeling greasy – just glowing with fresh-looking skin with no irritation. How do you want women to feel when wearing your clothes? Every woman is beautiful in her own unique way. All we want to do is to add confidence and enable women to show off their radiance and beauty. When someone wears our garments, she needs to feel fierce and elegantly sexy.

04.

What was your biggest fear when going out and starting your own line? Failing for not being an expert or educated in fashion. This was definitely one of the biggest obstacles my mind had to overcome.

05.

What’s your favourite part about being a designer? I love the fact that the whole industry in ever-changing. No one ever knows everything about fashion – there’s always some new trend or a new way of doing something.

P

roudly South African fashion label GEO by George is the very essence of ultra-luxe glamour, impeccable elegance and modernity. When did you first realise you wanted to pursue a career as a fashion designer? I’ve always been very interested in fashion – from upcoming trends to colours and textures. I guess I’ve always known that I will end up in the fashion industry. When I worked with some people in fashion back in 2016, I immediately knew that I wanted to start my own fashion label. I worked on the business plan for about a year and launched my first collection in July 2017.

Describe the essence of the GEO by George fashion label. GEO is a very classic, elegant and timeless brand. The silks we use are luxurious and soft to the touch. We try to use 100% natural fabrics in all our ready-to-wear garments.

06.

What was the biggest rookie mistake you made when just starting out? Allowing myself to listen to too many peoples’ opinions. Everyone will have an opinion; about the brand, the style, the industry or the price ranges. You will get people who will always criticise. I just had to find a way to take something from every bad comment or critic. I believe one needs criticism to learn and improve.

07.

If you could go back and tell yourself one thing before beginning your fashion design career, what would it be? Give yourself time. Take a few breaths before rushing into something. This is a fastmoving industry, and although you need to move with it, it’s always important to make a decision when you’re calm and informed.

08.

What role do you think social media plays in fashion today? I think that social media and the influence it has is definitely the way forward when it comes to the promotion and marketing of a brand. The influence of social media is extremely powerful and something that can be underestimated quite often. There are so many platforms that can all be linked to one another, which is an amazing way of letting people know about your brand. 41 | www. sc e ne i nt he c i t y . c o. z a | O c to b e r / N o v e mb e r 2 0 2 0

14.

What made you want to expand your business from just designing clothing to wedding dresses as well? From the beginning, the plan was and still is to introduce something new to the brand every year or two. A new department, a new product – whatever it may be, just something new to keep our clients interested. We’re currently working on something quite exciting for 2021. What were the inspirations for the bespoke black wedding dress that you custom made? A black wedding dress was something that I’ve always wanted to do. I love black and the idea of a black wedding dress has always been quite intriguing. The dress was designed for a styled shoot I did with SA weddings. It was such a fun and creative project to work on.

11.

What does the 2020/2021 bride look like to you? This is such a difficult one. I have brides with so many different styles and personalities. But something that I’ve noticed is that most brides seem to be loving all lace dresses. I’ve also seen some older trends making a comeback, such and ruffle skirts and beaded fabrics.

12.

Do you have a favourite dress type? I’m a huge fan of the ever-classic A-line dress. It’s a style that can be worn by women of almost every shape and size. The wedding dress of Kate Middleton, Duchess of Cambridge, will always be an ultimate favourite. 42 | w w w.s c en ein t h ec it y.c o.za | October/November 2 0 2 0

There’s so much pressure for designers to come out with their greatest collection season after season. What advice would you give to young designers just starting out and hoping to make it in the industry? Although it’s important to research and know what the fashion and colour trends are, I’d definitely advise designers to be unique and to find their own niche in the market. Do what you feel passionate about. Tell us about your day job and how you balance it with Geo by George. I’m a finance and human resource manager for a manufacturing company. One of the most important lessons I’ve learned is that you’re only as good as your team. Fortunately, I have amazing teams working with me in both industries.

15. 16.

Three words to describe your world… Crazy, exciting and blessed. Where are we most likely to bump into you when you’re in Joburg? I love Parkhurst and Westcliff, so I always find a place to stay in either of those areas. My favourite restaurant has to be Flames at Four Seasons Hotel The Westcliff, but I also like to wander down 4th Avenue in Parkhurst. 072 607 9135 www.geobygeorge.com

FRESH-FACED FOR Skincare essentials to kick off the new season

After months of layering serums, balms and oils, winter has left the building (well, almost), taking with it our dry, itchy skin and dreary moods. How, then, to update your skincare routine to get that glow back? From an uneven complexion to chapped lips, these products will nix pesk warm-weather beauty issues and prep your face for sunnier days ahead. Start scrubbing The first step in the glow game is exfoliating to get rid of seasonlong buildup on the skin. The heavenly Burt’s Bees Peach & Willow Bark Deep Pore Scrub (R250) gently exfoliates pores to clear them of dirt, excess oil and dead skin, while finely ground peach stone polishes your complexion to a smooth, natural radiance. Best of all, it’s natural and free of parabens! Available from Dis-Chem and www.takealot.com

Lighten your load Saying goodbye to winter means you can say goodbye to superheavy face creams too. A new breed of serum, the Gatineau Perfection Ultime Cream-Serum (R1,150) is a ‘pressed serum’ has the potency of a serum and the comfort of a featherlight cream to deliver a soft, smooth and dewy glow. It can be used alone, underneath a moisturiser or in a thicker layer as an overnight treatment mask. Available from select Woolworths, Truworths and Dis-Chem stores

Update your cleansing routine Yes, the Elemis Pro Collagen Rose Balm (R1,050) is high maintenance, but this luxurious balm takes you straight to the spa. Warm a scoop between your palms, massage into your skin and gently wipe away with a damp cloth – it will remove makeup, sweat and dirt in a flash, but not moisture. It really softens the skin, and its delicate English rose scent is what makes it really stand out. Available from Edgars

Apply (and reapply) sunscreen You’ve heard it before, but we’ll say it again: It’s essential to apply sunscreen year-round, but especially during the warmer months because you’ll likely be spending more time outdoors. The Dermalogica Prisma Protect SPF 30 (R1,100) is a multi-tasking moisturiser that shields your complexion from harmful UV rays as well as soothes and hydrates your skin. Available from Dermalogica concept stores and www.dermalogica.co.za

Treat yourself!

It firms. It brightens. It hydrates. In a nutshell, it’s easier to list what the luxurious Diego dalla Palma Professional Icon Time Gold Elixir (R1,595) can’t do. A sublime infusion of gold enriched with golden microcapsules of hyaluronic acid that melt in contact with the skin, it’s incredibly effective at stimulating the production of new collagen and makes makeup virtually optional. Available from select spas and salons

Add an eye cream

To combat fine lines and wrinkles that can form around the eyes, find an eye cream like our top pick, the Kiehl’s Creamy Eye Treatment with Avocado (R440); a creamy, moisturising eye treatment formulated with avocado oil. The unique, concentrated texture gently moisturises the delicate eye area to plump up fine lines and wrinkles that have already formed. Available from Kiehl’s and Edgars

Use a killer overnight cream

Evening is the best time for skin to repair itself, so what better time for REN Radiance Overnight Glow Dark Spot Sleeping Cream (R995) to work to help regenerate skin and reduce the appearance of dark spots? Use this rich, hydrating sleep cream with 94% naturally derived ingredients before bed and wake up with brighter, glowier and all-round healthier-looking skin. Available from www.renskincare.co.za and Woolworths

Comfort sensitive skin

For those of us with sensitive skin, seasonal changes can be difficult. The Eau Thermale Avène A-Oxitive Day Smoothing Water Cream (R399) and Eau Thermale Avène A-Oxitive Night Peeling Cream (R409) naturally help prevent irritation, flare-ups and breakouts. These lightly fragranced products also help the skin to defend itself against oxidative stress and the harmful effects of pollution. Another must-have is the Eau Thermale Avène Thermal Spring Water (from R85) – a skin-quenching face mist that soothes hot, irritated skin (AKA our face all spring long). Available from Clicks, Dis-Chem and www.dermastore.co.za

SPRING INTO A NEW HAIR CARE ROUTINE

Of course, we didn’t forget about your crowning glory. To keep your hair healthy and looking gorgeous as we transition into spring, we recommend the INOAR Resistance Lotus Oil (R130), composed of plant ingredients that penetrate deep into the hair fibre and give back its natural moisture, and the INOAR Resistance Lotus Super Ampoule (R500) – it strengthens, moisturises and nourishes in three minutes and you can enjoy five to seven treatments out of one ampoule. These products will prepare your hair for warmer weather – after all, a lustrous mane polishes any outfit.

blowdryco. It’s time for that much-need new ’do Joburg girls are known for their artfully rumpled hair, but make no mistake – unless you’re a dab hand with the old vented brush, blowdryco. is pretty essential to have in one’s little black book of beauty. At this newly revamped blowdry bar in Parkhurst, the masterful stylists conjure that kind of easy insouciance and promise to make multitasking simple. When it comes to blow-dry bars with Instagrammable décor, blowdryco. is the top of the Joburg hit list. Conveniently located on 4th Avenue, the bar’s relaxing surroundings are great spaces to chill out in – think pink interiors offset with a navy-blue statement wall and a whole lot of fresh roses Everything about this place (quietly) screams ‘treat yourself’, and the blow-dries are rather good too. 46 | w w w.s c en ein t h ec it y.c o.za | October/November 2 0 2 0

Nothing makes you feel quite as fabulous as a fresh, glossy blow-dry, but not all bars provide the same results. However, the services here are made to have staying power for guaranteed luscious locks and to make sure you always look good enough to bump into an ex. Whether you want soft and understated or big and bouncy, the menu consisting of five signature styles has got you covered. We can personally recommend the Paris; an ace blow-dry that’s styled perfectly for your face shape with lovely, soft romantic curls. It starts with a serious shampoo using Kevin Murphy products and a divine scalp massage that results in extra volume and bounce that looks much better after you’ve slept on it. And did we mention the reclining chairs and hair perfume to finish it off? It’s worth every penny. As well as their excellent hair services, under the blowdryco. roof you can now also book in to have a manicure and pedicure, brow shape and tint, lash lift and tint, henna spa tint, microblading, microshading, waxing and threading. If you’re in need of some real pampering, we recommend having a spa manicure at the same time as your blow-dry at one of their special tables (you’ll feel like a model). Don’t forget to ask what’s new – they’ve recently introduced the i-Spa Heel Peel treatment that’s well worth trying out. blowdryco.’s combo of cruelty-free Kevin Murphy products, supreme hairdressing skill and bubbly atmosphere make for an addictive experience that’s hard to beat. It’s no wonder their loyal clients span the entirety of the City of Gold. PS: It’s a great choice for a social too; get the gals together and sip on chilled champagne while you get your hair and nails done. Every detail has been thought of for an ultimate day of pampering. Never thought you can fall asleep to a facial? Try one here and you’ll be pleasantly surprised! Using Dermalogica’s rich, intense, restorative creams, serums and masques, the personalised 60-minute treatment includes Face Mapping skin analysis, double cleansing and exfoliation. Sure, the lighting in the room is advantageous, but afterwards the result is pretty exceptional looking skin. Tired skin appears more hydrated, energised and glowing, while wrinkles are smoother, making it completely acceptable to leave without any makeup on. You’ll savour the facial long after you’ve left the salon! Our top tip is to not feel like you have to rush out afterwards – you can rest and sip a cup of tea in your treatment room complete with a duvet to delay facing the bustle of Joburg outside. You can also rely on Urban Escape for a perfectly polished pedicure, as the service is consistently thorough and the results long-lasting. For a luxe treatment with an edge, book a Shellac Pedicure (R475) with a Paraffin Dip (R115). Combining a traditional pedicure with a pampering foot massage, you can expect to bounce out feeling much lighter on your feet. This new Insta-worthy beauty salon is well worth a visit for a post-work shop and polish proposition, but be sure to book in advance – they’re already gaining a deeply loyal and regular fan base, so if you want an appointment you need to get in early. TALK skincare A one-on-one with KAREN BESTER – medical trainer at Lamelle Research Laboratories

Spring is a time of renewal: Flowers blooming, birds chirping and your skin emerging from a cocoon of intensive winter moisturiser and lip balm. Karen Bester, medical trainer at Lamelle Research Laboratories, says it’s the season to expose your skin. Here, she explains how to wake up our skin from its winter hibernation and get your (healthy) glow on. Is there anything in our daily routine or diet that you recommend we change for healthy skin this spring? Spring is always a time for renewal and I think it’s the best time to have an intensive look at routines, including your skincare routine. If you’ve been using the same old cleanser and moisturiser for the last three to five years, it might be time to look at something new and fresh.Call in the professionals: Make an appointment to see a skincare therapist (in person or virtually) for a consultation. She will work out a routine based on what you’re wanting to change on your skin. If, on the other hand, you’re very good at changing your skincare routine seasonally, there are two important things to consider when going into spring. Firstly, don’t change your moisturiser too soon and secondly, update your sunscreen as quickly as you can.

Any tips to calm warm-weather inflammation like sunburns and heat rash? At Lamelle, we use the Nourish Rescue Repair Gel for this, which is packed with aloe vera, hyaluronic acid and menthol. The product also contains the potent antioxidant Pygnogenol; a free radical quencher of note. Another tip to increase your skin’s resistance to the sun is to drink our oral supplement, Ovelle D3. Also containing Pygnogenol, it increases the skin’s resistance to burning by 81% – a definite consideration when you are in the sun a lot!

Outdoor lovers are often torn between a nice tan and fighting wrinkles. Does it have to be one or the other? In Joburg, we’re hit with hot, dry warmer months and pollution. What can Joburgers do to compensate for the toll this takes on skin? The challenge with hot, dry weather is that we don’t always use the correct ingredients on our skin. For example, because you’re sweaty or flustered, you might be inclined to use a lighter or water-based gel moisturiser. But you need to use something that contains lipids to trap that beautiful gel in your skin. I’d recommend that you add the Correctives HA plus to your daily moisturising routine to do this. Also, for pollutants, you need to add antioxidants to yourskincare routine. Try an ascorbic acid serum (which feels like a primer on the skin) like the Correctives Recharge CE or the Nourish Rescue Repair Gel. Apply this product after a day out and about – even if you’re really burnt, it will cool and calm the skin while quenching all the free radicals your skin produced or absorbed.

How often should we reapply sunscreen throughout the day in spring? That would depend on how easily you burn naturally and what SPF you’re using. The general rule is that if you’re spending time in the sun, you need to reapply every two to three hours.

Short answer: There’s no such thing as a healthy tan! Long answer: The trigger to turning brown is DNA damage. So, UV light either directly or indirectly, by way of freeradicals, damages the DNA of viable skin cells called keratinocytes. The cell creates two messages – one triggers inflammation, while the other triggers the melanocyte to make melanin. No tan (unless it’s a spray tan or rub-on tan) is safe. It increases your risk for skin cancer and will definitely age your skin faster.

What are your top five Lamelle must-haves for the new season? The Ovelle D3 oral supplement is the number-one musthave to protect your skin and skin cells from free radical damage, ageing and inflammation. Then the Helase 50+ broad-spectrum sunscreen, Dermaheal Eye Regeneration Plus Cream, Correctives Recharge CE and Nourish Rescue Repair Gel.

WIN! We’ve teamed up with Lamelle and are giving away a hamper consisting of the Helase 50 sunscreen, Nourish Rescue Repair Gel and Recharge CE complex, valued at R1,875. To enter, go to www.sceneinthecity.co.za.

Breakouts are a problem in summer, especially with frequent sunscreen application. How can we keep skin clear? Once again, this depends on the sun protection ingredients you’re using on your skin. Sunscreen is generally less comedogenic than sunblock, so I’d suggest looking for those ingredients if your skin is acne prone. A twice-daily routine of cleansing and moisturising – yes, you still need to moisturise your skin even if you struggle with breakouts – will help remove any excess oil. You can also add our oral supplement, Acnevelle or look at our spot and body treatments for specific treatment areas. 51 | www. sc e ne i nt he c i t y . c o. z a | O c to b e r / N o v e mb e r 2 0 2 0

TOURIST IN YOUR own country Our top 3 post-lockdown holidays to book this year

Hand in hand with Haniel Travel Solutions – travel experts you can trust based in Michelangelo Towers Mall – here’s a collection of our favourite trips to take in the remainder 2020. From in-the-know destinations to South Africa’s best sights and local secrets, they have curated trips with top guides, brilliant detailed itineraries and, of course, amazing exclusive experiences.

CAPE WINELANDS Admire blissful views, prestigious wineries, flavoursome cuisine and impressive artwork Just outside Cape Town (about a 45-minute drive) lies another awesome attraction that goes beyond the beaches and mountains that everyone boasts about on Instagram: The Cape Winelands, including the towns of Stellenbosch, Franschhoek and Paarl. If you’re not an in-the-know oenophile, putting together an itinerary to the meandering Winelands can be a challenge. It’s perfectly acceptable to take a day trip if time is short, but we highly recommend staying a few nights. Here, it’s all about old meets new, luxury meets ease, life meets leisure. Do you want to gaze over vineyards while you drink your morning coffee in Stellenbosch and discover the town’s rich heritage? Perhaps you’d like to stay in plush accommodation in Franschhoek and explore the wine town as well as the vineyards? Either way, there are sufficient plush accommodation options, from classic, old-school luxury to sophisticated new kids on the block. There’s an 52 | w w w.s c en ein t h ec it y.c o.za | October/November 2 0 2 0

overwhelming number of wineries – many that offer both good wine and good views. Delaire Graaff Estate, Tokara, La Motte and Haute Cabrière should be at the top of your wine-tasting agenda. When you’ve consumed your weight in wine, make Grande Provence your next stop. You can taste bubbly and oysters and laze in the landscaped sculpture gardens, which will mop it all up. What’s more, from fine dining at The Restaurant at Waterkloof and Overture to farm-to-table fare at Babylonstoren and Terroir, there’s a dining experience in a sublime setting for every style and palate. Insider tip: Uber is available throughout the Cape Winelands and is a much safer mode of transport than a rental car when you’re wine tasting (simply map out your must-visit spots on Google Maps in advance). Also check out the many shuttle services in the region as well as the Franschhoek Wine Tram. And don’t forget to drop in at the impressive farm stalls on the wine farms you visit for freshly baked bread, cheese, jams and preserves, cookbooks and (more) wine to take home with you.

KRUGER NATIONAL PARK Check into a serene lodge in the middle of an epic national park with abundant wildlife Known as one of the world’s most superb wildlife-watching destinations, all of Africa’s iconic safari species share the bushveld in the Kruger National Park. The Big Five all reside here with a supporting cast of 137 other mammals and over 500 varieties of bird. There’s no better place to slow down and experience the rhythm, sounds and cycle of the bush. Several properties are inside the park; a mix of luxury and budget-friendly. If you’re planning an unforgettable romantic getaway, you’re spoilt for choice with the likes of Royal Malewane, which boasts palatial suites with great attention to privacy, and Jock Safari Lodge where you can enjoy colonial style suites and a lovely spa. Londolozi Private Granite Suites – which offers massages, yoga classes and a refreshing dip in your private plunge pool (sundowner in hand) – is another top option. Lodges such as these will ensure that your stay is tailored to your exact requirements. For a solo or family adventure, you can choose to stay somewhere more rustic and bed down at Inyati Game Lodge, Mjejane River Lodge or Elephant Plains. These lodges also offer everything you’re looking for in a safari – and, yes, you can still see for miles and miles without catching the sight of another person at these lodges – but at the same time have every amenity to ease the transition for your tech-driven little ones, such as Wi-Fi and TVs. There’s also the option of staying at Tsendze Rustic Campsite, which doesn’t charge daily tariffs, if you’re looking to save money. Insider tip: For a first-time safari – whether you’re bringing the kids with you or not – our top tip is to stay at a highend lodge or camp. The prolific sightings (think lions, elephants, rhinos and a pack of wild dogs in a single game drive) will keep the kids constantly entertained. Plus, the staff will do everything they can to make you feel special, such as a champagne-and-roses bath at night if you’re celebrating an anniversary or birthday with your special someone.

EAST COAST Visit drop-dead gorgeous towns, river mouths and sleepy hamlets on this vast coast The East Coast of South Africa, which stretches from Port Elizabeth past East London all the way north of Durban an up to the Mozambique border, is as beautiful as it is vast. The 1,200km strip of coast includes the Sunshine Coast, Wild Coast, Hibiscus Coast, Dolphin Coast and the Elephant Coast. You’ll find beach after beach as well as beachside cities, making it a beach lover’s heaven. Choosing where to visit on this incredibly long coastline can be a daunting task, however, there are a handful of fantastic destinations and landmarks that aren’t to be missed. Among these are Hole in the Wall, one of South Africa’s most photographed landmarks not far south of Coffee Bay; the extraordinary wild sand dunes of Alexandria (sometimes also called a dune sea); Blythedale Beach, where the water is warm and the sun seems to shine all the time; and the striking, small coastal town of Kenton-on-Sea, which offers three beaches – Kariega, Middle and Shelly. The village of Cintsa’s beauty is equally unmissable – the sunrises are spectacular and you can take your canoe up the river or walk to Cefani Mouth, a secluded little piece of paradise on the Wild Coast. The East Coast is also home to DwesaCwebe Wildlife Reserve & Marine Sanctuary, two nature reserves with corresponding rivers. Although access roads are tough, the views of the indigenous coastal forest are nothing short of awe-inspiring. Insider tip: If you’re looking to travel to a remote destination that’s absolutely breathtaking, check out Umzumbe, about 100km south of Durban. It’s one of the top places to go scuba diving and dolphin spotting. Plus, the beach has Blue Flag status, meaning it’s clean, secure and environmentally safe. There’s also Mabibi Beach, situated between Sodwana Bay and Kosi Bay. The coastal forest beach is arguably the least known beach on the East Coast and is ideal for chilling and snorkeling.
