Houston Grand Opera (HGO) is one of the largest, most innovative, and most highly acclaimed opera companies in the United States. HGO was the only American finalist for Opera Company of the Year in the 2019 International Opera Awards. In fulfilling its mission to advance the operatic art to serve an ever-evolving audience, HGO leads the field in commissioning and producing new works (76 world premieres to date) and in training and nurturing promising young artists and administrators.
The company contributes to the cultural enrichment of Houston and the nation through a diverse and innovative program of performances, community events, and education projects that reaches the widest possible public. HGO’s pioneering Community and Learning initiative has served as a model for other arts organizations.
HGO has toured extensively and has won a Tony, two Grammy awards, and three Emmy awards. It is the only opera company to win all three honors.
Through its Community and Learning initiatives, Houston Grand Opera explores the intersection between the multidisciplinary art form of opera and the needs of the people HGO serves. The company provides authentic and enriching experiences through collaborative partnerships with schools, families, community organizations, and curious members of society.
Initiatives include developing programming about opera the resonates thematically with HGO’s audiences and, each season, offering popular, accessible programs like the Student Performance Series and Opera to Go! at the Wortham Theater Center and in more than one hundred schools, parks, libraries, and community spaces in the greater Houston area and throughout Texas.
The arts are critical to the well-being of people of all ages, which is why our programming is designed to reach Houstonians in every corner of the region.
The Bauer Family High School Voice Studio’s mission is to identify and nurture high school students who exhibit potential and are interested in pursuing vocal performance at the collegiate level. The BFHSVS guides aspiring students to find healthy means of vocal technique and artistic expression and all-around achievement within a rigorous and supportive environment.
