When the glamorous courtesan Violetta and the young Alfredo fall for each other, it’s as if nothing can tear them apart. But as tragedy unfolds over three sublime acts, family, classism, and deceit plague their relationship, and true love is shaken to its core. Verdi’s La traviata is one of the world’s most beloved—and performed—operas. This HGO revival features Grammy Award-winning soprano Angel Blue making her company debut as Violetta, a courtesan whose pursuit of love belies a creeping, fatal illness. Award-winning tenor Bryan Hymel, praised for the passion of his performances, sings the role of Alfredo, a young man whose love for Violetta is tested on all sides, and celebrated baritone Andrei Kymach makes his HGO debut as Alfredo’s father Giorgio. Award-winning director Arin Arbus returns to HGO, and conductor Matthew Aucoin makes his company debut.

Dame Ethel Smyth’s epic 1906 opera The Wreckers gets its first ever full-scale production from a major American opera company. This must-see new production stars Grammy Award-winning mezzo-soprano Sasha Cooke as the resolute Thirza whose husband, the preacher Pascoe, declares to the coastal community that shipwrecks along their shore are meant to be pillaged—and meant to be premeditated by leaving the lighthouse dark. But Thirza’s heart and conscience are not with her husband or with his dangerous methods. Someone among them is secretly warning the ships of danger, and the villagers search for the traitor while Thirza embraces her convictions, no matter the cost. Acclaimed HGO Studio alumni Reginald Smith, Jr. and Norman Reinhardt sing the roles of Pascoe and Mark, the fisherman in love with the married Thirza. Radiant soprano and HGO Studio alumna Mané Galoyan performs the role of Mark’s unhappy ex, Avis. This exciting new HGO production is directed by Louisa Muller and conducted by HGO Artistic and Music Director Patrick Summers.

Back by popular demand, the HGO-commissioned mariachi opera El Milagro del Recuerdo (The Miracle of Remembering) again transports audiences to Michoacán, Mexico, just in time for the holidays. A celebration of family and tradition, this timely story follows the lives of Laurentino, a bracero who returns from the United States to spend Christmastime with his family, and his wife Renata, who worries that his time away from home is changing him. The two face a life-changing decision: whether to stay with family in Mexico, or leave for the promise of a better life. Much of the original cast returns for this revival, including soprano Cecilia Duarte as Renata, and acclaimed bass-baritone Federico De Michelis in his role debut as Laurentino. Librettist Leonard Foglia directs with conductor Benjamin Manis taking the podium for this new Houstonian holiday tradition.

Grandage’s production of the boisterous rom-com, first staged by HGO in 2016, resets the class-conscious comedy in late ’60s Francoist Spain. Full of bright colors and costumes evoking the Moroccan influence on Muslim Spain, the vibrant production synthesizes transcendent music and lively performances into an unforgettable evening at the opera. Its large cast is led by bass Nahuel Di Pierro as the titular Figaro, a working-class man set to marry the beautiful Susanna despite the meddling of their employer, a married Count who would rather have the beauty for himself. The role of Susanna is performed by soprano Elena Villalón in her first return to the company after completing her training with the HGO Studio. Renowned bass-baritone Adam Plachetka portrays the Count, with beloved soprano Nicole Heaston, an HGO Studio alumna and company favorite, as his wife. Ian Rutherford directs the celebrated production’s revival, with HGO Artistic and Music Director Patrick Summers conducting.

The lovesick yearnings of the tortured young poet Werther lead to his tragic fate in Massenet’s lush opera, which returns to HGO for the first time in 40 years with this production from French director Benoît Jacquot, making his HGO debut. After Werther escorts the lovely Charlotte to a ball, he falls hopelessly in love with her, but she is engaged to Albert, with no intention of breaking things off. Unable to conceive of life without her, Werther grows ever more despondent as he continues his attempts to woo the object of his affections, who doesn’t love him back—or does she? Matthew Polenzani, one of the world’s most distinguished tenors, leads the cast as Werther in his long-anticipated Houston debut. With mezzosoprano Isabel Leonard, an international star and winner of three Grammy awards, debuting alongside, and world-renowned conductor Robert Spano taking the podium, audiences won’t want to miss this chance to see a cast of legends perform a rare psychological drama.

A combustible mix of political crime, love, and obsession explodes in tragedy in Puccini’s masterpiece, Tosca, one of the world’s favorite operas. The story is set in Rome in the early 1800s, where the singer Floria Tosca and the painter Cavaradossi are in love. But their romance is doomed by the toxic Baron Scarpia, who is on the hunt for the escaped political prisoner whom Cavaradossi is protecting. To make matters worse, Scarpia decides he wants Tosca for himself, jails her lover, and threatens to kill him. Tosca tries to save Cavaradossi’s life by striking a terrible bargain with Scarpia, but he betrays her—and her revenge comes too late. Soprano Tamara Wilson, an HGO Studio alumna who is now one of the most recognizable voices in opera, performs her role debut as the fiery Tosca in this riveting revival production directed by frequent HGO collaborator John Caird. Star tenor Jonathan Tetelman performs as Cavaradossi, making his company debut in his signature role, and Grammy-nominated baritone Rod Gilfry returns to HGO as Scarpia.

Strauss’s erotic psychodrama Salome returns to HGO with the U.S. premiere from Spanish director Francisco Negrin, who makes his company debut with this gripping production. Based on the scandalous play by Oscar Wilde, the opera recounts the story of a deeply disturbed princess who has fallen in love with Jokanaan (also known as John the Baptist). After he denies her advances, she performs the infamous and seductive Dance of the Seven Veils for King Herod in exchange for John’s head. Soprano Amanda Majeski is set to make a stunning HGO debut by taking on the title role, one of the greatest challenges in the operatic repertoire, for the first time. She is joined by three Houston favorites and HGO Studio alumni: bass-baritone Ryan McKinny as Jokanaan, tenor Chad Shelton as Herod, and mezzo-soprano Denyce Graves as Herodias. HGO’s internationally acclaimed Principal Guest Conductor, Eun Sun Kim, takes the podium.
